Biggest CAF combatives tournament held at Garrison Petawawa

the 2018 Military Combatives Grappling Championship.

It is the biggest event of its kind in the CAF and showcased some incredible feats of strength and agility. It has gained so much trac-tion and interest that the

June 23 event was streamed live on the internet, allow-ing a growing contingent of fans to watch, regardless of distance.

“We are trying to get the Canadian people in general interested but we are also hoping to show it to the wider military as well,” said Tourna-ment Technical Director Lieu-tenant Colonel (LCol) Steven Burgess. “So for the folks who can’t be here or are on op-erations, this will let them see what the Canadian Armed Forces are doing.”

This year, 170 men and women signed up to com-pete. For the first time, there were also enough female members participating to feature a female absolute tournament.

“This is the largest we have ever had,” said LCol Burgess, adding that fighters came from all ranks, units, and trades in the Regular and Reserve Force, as well as Special Forces.

Combatives is the es-sence of what it means to be a soldier, said LCol Burgess.

Species at Risk: Send Us Your Sightings! The Department of Nation-

al Defence, like all other federal agencies, has an obligation to abide by federal laws pertain-ing to the protection of species at risk and other wildlife.

The Environment Services unit at Garrison Petawawa con-ducts wildlife surveys and spe-cies at risk assessments to en-sure that protected species are protected, but they can only ob-tain so much information them-selves. The truth is that everyone can help in the search for species at risk at Garrison Petawawa.

Now that spring has ar-rived and we are all spend-ing more time outdoors, we are more likely to encounter wildlife and maybe even see something special that it is not seen very often. If you or someone you know has spot-ted something that you think might be a species at risk, please don’t hesitate to let Env Svcs know about it. Any in-formation at all is useful, but the more information you can provide, the better. Informa-tion such as species, location, and date are most important to us, but it would be great to also document things like the time, what the animal was doing, and even the weather

conditions. One of the best pieces of information is actu-ally a photo; take one if you can! GPS coordinates would be great, but not necessary, as a description of the general area is really all we need.

If you do encounter a spe-cies at risk, please ensure that

you give it space. Observe and admire it from a distance, try and snap a photo or two, but please do not actually touch or disturb the animal in any way. Species at risk sighting infor-mation can be emailed to [email protected] or you can call 687-5511 ext 5960.

If you are going on Duty or non-Duty travel outside Canada or the USA, both CAF and DND are required to notify the Canadian Forces National Counter Intelligence Unit (CFNCIU) as far in ad-vance as possible, by submitting the Notification of Intent to Trav-el. You must also inform your manager/supervisor of such intent. In extreme instances, travel may be prohibited by Commanding Officers or civilian Senior managers base on the advice provided by CFNCIU or DGDS. Travel taken without notification could re-sult in the individuals concerned being exposed to unneccesary and potentially serious danger. It may also be cause for disciplin-ary actoin or the re-examination of the person’s security screening, if the supervisor has grounds for concern with respect to possible contact. Women Walking for Hope launch the Amazing Community Challenge

The Amazing Community Challenge is a massive scavenger hunt to raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society’s Wheel of Hope Transportation Program in Renfrew County.

Inspired by reality television show the Amazing Race, participants will make their way through Petawawa and Pembroke Aug. 25 with the hopes of solving 15 different in-teractive challenges while discovering more about the area.

To join in on the family-friendly fun, all you need is a car, a pen and paper, a sense of adventure as well as a team of four family members and friends.

Unlike the television show, it is not a race.“We want to take the race element out

of it and make it more of a community chal-lenge,” said Organizer Lesley Buckingham.

“It is more of an opportunity for every-body to get to know the community,” she added, pointing out that all money raised by the event stays in the community.

She is still looking for volunteers as well as businesses willing to open their doors to host a challenge.

The event is hosted by the Women Walk-ing for Hope, a group known for their annual walk from Petawawa to Pembroke and back again to raise money for the Wheels of Hope program.

This program is essential for those liv-ing with cancer in Renfrew County. It allows those without regular transportation to trav-el safely and comfortably to their treatments in Ottawa and Kingston.

“This service is made possible because of our amazing thirty-plus volunteer driv-ers we have throughout the county as well as people like the ladies from Women Walking for Hope who have dedicated so many hours to fundraising towards this program,” said Leigh Costello, Community Fundraising Specialist for the Canadian Cancer Society Renfrew County Community Office.

Through their various fundraising efforts over the past seven years, Women Walking for Hope have provided more than 450 trips to cancer treatment for people throughout Renfrew County.

“This represents approximately 50 peo-ple or 50 families whose battle with cancer has been made just a little less stressful be-cause of the great work they have done and continue to do,” said Costello.

There is an early bird discount of $80 per team while the regular price is $90. People are encouraged to fundraise additionally, but it is not necessary to participate. Prizes are awarded to the team and individual who have collected the most money.

More details can be found online at www.cancer.ca/amazingcommunitychallenge or by contacting Lesley at 613-633-1465 or Su-san Chalmers at 613-635-2527.

A number of Petawawa soldiers recently distin-guished themselves at the Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend.

The Tamarack Race brings together tens of thou-sands of runners from across the nation and around the world. Canada’s largest multi-day running event is also host to the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) Na-tional Running Champion-ship. CAF regions across the country send approximately 20 military members each to compete.

Petawawa’s Chief War-rant Officer Marco Cote came in first in Male Senior with 1:22:34.9, a 41st overall

out of 8,000 competitors in the half marathon.

CWO Cote first took up running in 1989 when he was 19-years-old, before his para-course. He had never truly run before and quickly realized that he not only had the skill but the passion to succeed.

He soon found himself taking on bigger and bigger challenges.

“It’s in my blood to com-pete,” said CWO Cote.

But it isn’t about the tim-ings. Though he appreciates a top finish, running is about completing a race itself with a time that is personally sat-isfying.

“Just enjoy it,” said CWO Cote.

He did, however, dem-onstrate some impressive times at the race weekend,

Captain Ryan Salsbury and Chief Warrant Officer Marco Cote both performed extremely well at the 2018 Tamarack Ottawa Race Week-end. (Patricia Leboeuf, Petawawa Post)

averaging three minutes and 54 seconds per kilometre over 21 km.

This is a second less than the race pace he had set out to do as he is training for fur-ther competitions including triathlons.

“Could I have pushed myself, yes, but not by much,” said CWO Cote. “The intent was to see where I am and my progression in the future.”

Based on his work sched-ule and his goals, CWO Cote is currently running between 50 and 60 kilometres a week. Yet despite his frequent run-ning, the Ottawa race week-end is the first large compe-tition he has taken part in through Garrison Petawawa.

He recommended that ev-eryone should take on a sport

or activity of their choosing to stay active and fit, particularly if they are in the CAF. Run-ning is, in his opinion, one of the basic skills that soldiers should possess.

CWO Cote also shared three tips about running long distances: “Composure, courage and commitment.”

Also participating at the Tamarack Race Week-end, Captain Ryan Salsbury of Petawawa completed the five km with a time of 16:54.29, coming fourth in the CAF and 14th overall of about 7,600 participants.

“It went better than I ex-pected,” said Capt Salsbury.

With a demanding job and two young children, he tries to squeeze in time for running whenever he can.

He found that running to and from work is an excel-lent way to refine his skills without taking away too much time from his work/home life.

“It’s not a training thing, it’s a lifestyle,” said Capt Salsbury. “You have to com-mit to activity as opposed to driving to work.”

He discovered his pas-sion for running when he was in Grade 11 after quit-ting hockey. His first ever time for a 5 km race was 17 minutes and 30 seconds.

“I was like, ‘Is that good?’ I was 17 years old and had no idea what I was doing,” said Capt Salsbury. “I think that is when I realized that I had some natural ability to compete and to run, so I de-veloped it more.”

He continued track and field throughout his post-sec-ondary education, improving significantly once he entered the military and learned prop-er discipline. He made it part of his life to be active as much as possible, building running alongside his repertoire of swimming and cycling.

He’s discovered that if he doesn’t compete, he just feels

as though he is training for nothing. So it is important to him to test himself against others.

“I like to have some sort of end-state or goal,” said Cap Salsbury, adding that ultimate-ly these races give him a better understanding of himself.

As a father and military member, he finds that he can best train if he gets the whole family involved. He can of-ten be seen at the beach chas-ing his kids or encouraging them to catch up. Though it may not seem like much,

those little moments do add up, he said.

“It is the personal gains that you are going to get,” said Capt Salsbury. “Instead of sitting on the sofa ... you get up and do something.”

He plans to continue competing in as many events as he can.

Also competing at the CAF National Championship were Half Marathoner Cap-tain Michelle Guertin with a timing of 1:41:07.18 and Mara-thoner Master Corporal Scott Galt with 2:54:39.92.

The Greater Petawawa Civitan Club members are back from their break. We hope that you all had a great Canada Day.

I ran in to two old friends the other day. They said they retired two years ago and traveled all over the place and had a great time. But now they said they wished they had something to do and that they were bored. They saw all they wanted to see. Oh, I said, why don’t you volunteer at one of the clubs that we have here in Petawawa? I told them about Civitan and what we are doing and asked them to come join us. Our Civitan members can tell you about Civitan but it is up to you if you want to join and have some fun and get to know new people. We are still looking for people to come and join our club and if you would like more information about Civitan and what we do, just come and talk to one of our members. The old saying is, when you help others you will feel happy about yourself. There is no cost to come and find out just what the Greater Petawawa Civitan Club is do-ing and what we are all about. Come to our Sunday night bingo and talk to our Petawawa Civitan Club members.

Oh by the way, did you remember to registered for our Fish-ing Tournament that will be held at the Pembroke marina on August 18? If not, you better do it now! Contact people are Ci-

Thought for the week: You have to keep your eyes open to see things.

That’s all for now, and God Bless and be happy.
