The HSC Trials begin

Students began their HSC Trial examinations on Monday with English being the first subject of the day. Please do not send your child if they have any Covid-19 symptoms. Any student who needs to get a Covid-19 test will be able to sit exams that were missed. If needed, students can be supplied with a mask during exams; however, this is not mandatory.

If a student is absent from major exams a “SIHS Medical Certificate” and “Illness or Misadven-ture” form should be given to the Deputy Principal Senior School, these documents can be found on the school website on pages xi and xii. https://stives-h.schools.nsw.gov.au/content/dam/doe/sws/schools/s/stives-h/assessment-booklets/2020/HSC_Assessment_Policy_Guidelines_2019_2020_Oct_19_Revised_Term_2_2020.pdf Examinations will continue until the end of next week. Efforts will be made to reschedule any exams missed within the major exam weeks.

Year 11 Subject Selection process – what next…

Year 11 Subject Selection for 2020 closed today at midday. If any year 10 student has not yet chosen their subjects for next year please go and see Ms Joynes in the LOTE staffroom. After this, a computer program creates the 7 elective lines based on the best fit for the majority of students. Sometimes, subjects may not run due to lack of numbers and also, some students may have 2 of their choices on the same line. If this happens, Ms Joynes will contact you to revise your choices; however, this will not occur until the middle of term 3.

Please continue to navigate the Year 11 Subject Selection Webpage to be better informed about the HSC. This one-stop-shop details NESA requirements for the HSC, understanding the ATAR, Frequently Asked Questions and has student perspectives on videos about most subjects taught in our school. The webpage can be accessed through the SIHS Website: click https://sites.google.com/education.nsw.gov.au/year-11-2021-subject-selection/home

Spray Deodorant banned from school Due to a serious incident that has occurred and for the health and safety of our students we have decided to ban spray deodorant. Sometimes students use spray deodorant in a dangerous and inappropriate manner at school, so we recommend that students carry roll-on deodorant if they feel the need to use this product at school. We will be informing all students that they are not to bring spray deodorant any longer. We appreciate your support.

Parent-Teacher phone interviews Parents have been very appreciative of Year 11 teachers giving up their time to discuss their child’s progress dur-ing this Covid-19 period. Year 7 parent-teacher phone interviews will open next Friday afternoon for parents to allo-cate a preferred time for weeks 6 - 8. Parents of years 8-10 are invited to make contact via email if they have a par-ticular concern about their child’s learning.

Progress on B and D Block – we are moving back soon! Our first block ready to move into, Block B, will be finished on the weekend of 15th August. It will feature all-new roof, ceilings, carpet, LED lighting, air-conditioning, whiteboards and AV equipment along with our new bell and PA system and two completely refurbished science labs. We are already able to turn off bells in select blocks to assist our students sitting exams and will see further benefits as we occupy the refurbished build-ings. Block D will be available for classes after the weekend of 22nd August. We are really looking forward to being in fewer demountable classrooms with less construction going on, though there are more projects in the pipeline. Block A remediation will commence on Monday 17th August and is expected to be complete early in term 4. The new Sports complex is really moving along now and is going to be a wonderful facility.

Gifts from Raise Mentor make it a special morning tea for students! On Thursday during period 2, I attended my weekly session at Raise Mentoring. All the stu-dents’ received these delightful little tote bags from Ku-ring-gai Youth Services. Inside there were a lot of lovely goodies like hot chocolate, a water bottle, pens, books and a bouncy ball. My favourite goodie was the hot chocolate. I enjoy Raise Mentoring because I get to talk to these nice volunteers about anything and they listen and give great advice, and the free food isn't bad either. Special thanks to Tori who is my mentor. Olivia C, Year 8

Enhancing Student Literacy at SIHS

Term 3 saw the commencement of our new evidence based, small group literacy inter-vention for low progress readers - Macqlit. This year we have 2 groups of year 7 stu-dents participating in the program and so far, they are powering ahead like champi-ons! Already the students are reporting an increased enjoyment of reading and some of them have even asked to borrow the books we are working on in lessons. Ms Brown and Ms Raymond are enjoying the rollout of Macqlit and hope to see the students' enthusi-asm continue to grow.

SRC Treasure Hunt and Mufti day

To mark Education Week, the SRC ran a treasure hunt and Mufti day. "Working from Home" was the theme, a happy look back to when Zoom classes allowed for more relaxed attire... The Treas-ure Hunt generated some excitement, the discovery of a bronze ticket saw students collect some chocolate treasures, 3 Silver Tickets was rewarded with a large box of Favourites and the Gold Ticket.... went to Boden T in Year 7, a $50 Gift voucher.

P&C Tansport & Traffic Survey

St Ives High P&C in partnership with the School will launch the Student Transport and Traffic Survey in Week 6. The purpose of this is survey is threefold: to investigate the scale and nature of the problems students currently face getting to and from school so that

we can lobby for improved transport services, to investigate traffic congestion issues around the school, their cause, and to lobby for measures to reduce

congestion, ensure pedestrian safety and improve traffic management to gather and collate your feedback about transport and traffic issues and then use it to lobby the decision

makers in government and NSW Transport for change.

The more families that respond to this survey with their insights, the more chance we will have for positive change. This will be critical when lobbying for improved services and local traffic measures.

Please be more mindful of any traffic and transport issues. In last week’s Newsletter we noted that traffic rangers had issued infringement notices to drivers who were stopping in the Bus Zone at the crest of the hill on Yarrabung Road. No Parking and Bus Zones are there for a reason; they help prevent the creation of blind spots and keep the bus bays clear so the buses can safely pull in to pick up and set down passengers. When people park illegaly they cre-ate hazards for pedestrians and traffic bottlenecks. Let’s work together in keeping our students and community safe. Please follow the road rules and talk to your P-Platers.

Best Wishes

Nathalie Bodley

Deputy Principal
