Through the eye of the free-floating witness, we observe life at work and leisure, in play and through hardships, from the shanty towns of Cape Town, to the Waura Tribe by the Xangu river, through the mist of the Atlas Mountains to the coloured night skies of Beijing.

Fly so Far follows Teodora Vásquez and The Seven-teen, the women accused of aggravated homicide in El Salvador for having had a miscarriage. The film is conducted by the story of Teodora, the spokesperson of the group, who after being imprisoned for eleven years was released in 2018 and became an activist for women’s rights. Her case has become the symbol of the extremism in the criminalization of abortion and the cruelty against women within the Salvadoran system, but also of empowerment, resilience and solidarity.

In For Somebody Else, we follow three women on an emotional and thought-provoking journey as they borrow their bodies and carry someone else’s children. They invite us in, sharing their experiences with us; before, during and after pregnancies as surrogate mothers. With remarkable intimacy and access, the film captures the everyday lives of these women, including the exhausting routine of hormone syringes and doctor’s visits, as well as tensions in relationships with loved ones and, not least, with the recipient families.

When Nadia and Nawaf come to North Macedonia the border just closed. They have fled a genocide and their goal is Germany. In the camp they meet Yasir whose family is split up and his wife is a captive of ISIS. The different camps they pass become worlds of their own. The film explores the parallel lives of the children and the adults. Together the children reflect on small and big things and about their future lives.

“What the hell is ‘an intelligent body?’ Can anybody tell me how to make my body more intelligent?” At the age of 24, the actor Lena Nyman asks herself this question after reading the reviews of the film I am Curious Yellow by Vilgot Sjöman. The film caused intense controversy in Sweden and internationally in the late 1960s and Lena was its leading actor. One of Sweden’s most prominent critics wrote “I’m requesting the intelligent body. Lena Nyman’s body lacks spirit, I would even call it dumb”. Lena Nyman was a woman before her time and had to pay a price for it. This film highlights her great artistry and genius, but also takes a closer look at her defiance and destructive behavior.

Isabel Andersson is a Swedish documentary filmmaker and Lena is her directorial debut. Earlier she has been working as a director’s assistant to Jerzy Sladkowski and researching several film projects, amongst others Jane Magnusson’s Bergman – A Year in a Life (2018).

Communist ideals have long lost their value in Yiwu, a city with 600 Christmas factories, in which Christmas as we know it is produced for the entire world. With rising factory wages, most workers can now afford newest iPhones, but they still live in crowded factory dormitories, all migrants in their own country. Stuck in between the Chinese traditions and the newly discove-red Chinese dream, they want their own businesses, they want to be rich, to be independent, to be in love.

Mladen Kovacevic’s films have been selected to hundreds of festivals including Visions du Réel, IDFA, Hot Docs, DOK Leipzig, CPH:DOX, FIDMarseille, where they have won numerous awards. While completing Merry Christmas, Yiwu he started two other productions; Beginnings, to be shot around the world and Koryo, to be shot in North Korea.
