New England #1,2013
Citation preview
The well-respected Manafort Brothers Inc. of Connecticut is doing all the wetland creations at the New BedfordAirport, with New England Mulching Co. subbing for them, blowing in all the leaf litter.
By Jay AdamsCEG CORRESPONDENT
They have created atriums on the roofs of a museum, recreated wetlands in the middle of airports and dug pools onthe sides of ocean cliffs.
Like the wetlands it has rebuilt, the sites and yards it hasdug and seeded, the building company of father-and-sonAlan and David Muoio grows rapidly.Alan Muoio, 58, and offspring David, 27, are celebrating
40 years in the landscape design-build industry. Alan found-ed his company Lawn Beauticians in 1972, and son David’s
baby — New England Mulching Services — came tobe in 2000.There also is another diverse division Forest Hills
Nurseries for other services, in a second location, neartheir Cranston, R.I., headquarters at 400 AqueductRoad.“We’re very diversified. We have a wholesale nurs-
ery; we dig, build, seed, grow plants, and do land-scape design and construction, commercial construc-tion. We’ll do anything that is either industrial, com-mercial, on buildings, in airports, on beaches, inponds, snow plowing, maintenance, anything. Wealways seem to stay busy,” said David Muoio. From creating waterslides in yards, to replacing
and recreating wetlands at airports to help saveendangered turtles, to blowing materials 2,000 ft.(610 m) at a job site through a new state-of-the-artblower truck, the Muoio team has created a fascinat-ing and well-respected yard, site, land and earth

An independently owned construction equipment rentalcompany, Reliable Equipment LLC of Manchester, N.H.,has more than 100 years of experience in the constructionequipment industry.
In addition to providing a full variety of earthmoving, compaction, lifts, pumps, air tools and other constructionequipment, Reliable Equipment LLC also has an extensiveparts and service department.
In the construction rental business for decades, MarkCooper knows the abuse that equipment often takes.
“I have been genuinely impressed with ChicagoPneumatic RX4 hammers’ reliability in the field,” saidCooper. “We always provide our customers with the properhydraulic grease and we are surprised when they don’t both-er to use it. The three RX4’s in our fleet keep working flaw-lessly — it has been two years now and we haven’t replacedthe seals.”

niche in Rhode Island andMassachusetts.“We’ve done some crazy back-
yards,” said Muoio. “From haulingeight- or 10-foot slab boulders to thejob site in order to create a mountain-type atmosphere in a yard, to hang-ing pools on a cliff and creating 20-foot drops, what we call vanishingedge pools, looking right into theocean, everything has been interest-ing.”They have worked for some of
the largest contractors in RhodeIsland and Massachusetts on jobs inBoston, Providence, Cranston,Warwick, Berkley, Rehoboth andNew Bedford, Mass., and too manytowns to mention. “We’ll go anywhere,” said
Muoio.
From One Truck to 40Subs
Alan Muoio began his careerwith more vowels in his last namethan pieces of equipment.
“My Dad started out cuttinggrass. He started out with a singlelawn mower and a pick-up truck, and went yard to yard,” said Muoio.“Then, he started doing more lawns, then, landscape construction, andthen it grew.”An only child, Muoio emulated
his Dad. He can’t remember doinganything else since he played withtrucks. He has accompanied hisfather on sites all of his life. Thehammer never falls far from the toolbelt.“I have been working here since I
was a kid, potting little plants,” saidMuoio. “Slowly, throughout sum-mers, I’d do some landscaping jobs, run the equipment. I loved the back-hoes, moving the earth, the jobs. Iloved the whole thing. Later in highschool, I was running smaller jobson my own, then progressed to big-ger jobs and taking on more respon-sibilities.”So did Lawn Beauticians. Until
the ancillary New EnglandMulching Co. was formed 12 yearsago, Alan Muoio held contracts withnational chains, landscaping theparking lots and grounds for all theChili’s and Bugaboo CreekRestaurants in New England, as
well as Bertucci’s Restaurants, throughthe 1990s.The family also did work on the
grounds annually for the Applebee’schain and On The Border.“We do snowplowing for Wal-Mart.
We have 40 or 50 subs who work for us
in wintertime,” said Muoio. “We have10 machines, pusher boxes, five or sixsanding trucks. We have about 40different subs, with machines andtrucks, and probably 20 different snowshovelers to do sidewalks.”
Creating Wetlands WithBlower Trucks
With four decades of variedwork behind them, the two jointbusinesses employ 35 people andare doing fascinating projects in twostates, thanks to new technologyemploying filter socks throughblower trucks.
Interesting Work“We have some interesting proj-
ects, like the project in NewBedford Airport we are working onnow. We are blowing 6,500 yards ofleaf litter to build wetland habitat forthe endangered box turtles,” he said.“We are creating wetlands withinthe airport. Basically, they had tomake the runways bigger, so theyhad to take away wetlands and thencreate new ones. The new regula-tions benefit the kind of work wedo.”The well-respected Manafort
Brothers Inc. of Connecticut isdoing all the wetland creations, withNew England Mulching Co. sub-bing for them, blowing in all the leaflitter. “We blow leaf litter to create the
wetlands, mulch and leaves, 500feet away from the truck,” saidMuoio. As Hurricane Sandy decimated
southwestern Rhode Island, destroying hundreds of homes alongOcean Road in Narragansett andMasquamucket Beach throughWesterly, the Muoio family wascalled in by landscape architects.“We do a lot of erosion control
with our blower trucks. It’s aFiltrexx patented system. You canread about it on our Web site. It’s allthere. We put up sediment barriers, compost blankets,” Muoio said. This storm, Hurricane Sandy, I’mmeeting with CRMC (CoastalResources Management Council). They brought us in to help controlerosion problems along the coastalshores. We’ll be working with themover the next few weeks.”
Projects From Building Wetlands to‘Crazy’ Backyards Keep Team Busy
The blower truck has the capability ofdoing rooftop gardens and other proj-ects up high on the side of a building.

“The RM60 crusher has been one of the best invest-ments that I have made for my asphalt paving/produc-tion company. The low running costs, ease of operationand consistent production for both RAP and recycled
aggregate makes the RM60 stand out. Day in and day out, the RM60 gives us the highest quality materials that are used in our daily
operations at the lowest cost per ton. I have also received outstanding support from the
dealer and the factory.”

Adaptibility, Going After BidsKeeps Company CompetitiveAs the planet “goes green,” the father-
and-son companies literally use the greenthey grow to change the environment for thebetter.“The blower truck business and the ero-
sion control business are getting bigger andbigger, because of stricter environmentalrestrictions, regulations and water control,”Muoio added. “You don’t have to go intotight places with (heavy) machines. You canuse just a four-inch hose and blow from1,000 to 2,000 feet away.“I did a job up in Boston, about 20 feet up,
blew in 500 cubic yards of crushed stone and1,700 cubic yards of loam, preparing for aplanting job for the Museum of Fine Arts inBoston,” said Muoio. “They couldn’t get inthere with a crane, so, they called me withmy blower truck.“When I use the blower truck, I can get in
anywhere, blowing loam, gravel, crushedstone, sand, mulch, soil mixtures. Also, wecan inject seed, any type of erosion control, and 100 percent soil contacts,” he added.“Our truck has the capability of doingrooftop gardens, 20 stories high on the sideof a building.”He has blown material up to 2,000 ft. (610
m) from the truck with unerring accuracythrough a combination of old time muscle, elbow grease and new world technology.“The truck is all computerized with a
modem for diagnostic purposes. But it’s ahose out of the truck, manual. You still haveto drag the hose,” said Muoio. This has improved business, as stricter
regulations require the kind of small spacetechnology afforded by the patented tech-niques Muoio uses.“All these new regulations are great with
me. Manafort Brothers, are building 20 or 30acres of wetlands for a turtle — box turtles, that are endangered,” Muoio saidd. “Withthe capability of the blower truck, none ofmy projects are ever cut and dried. It’salways something crazy or ridiculous. Youcan never get material in there in any otherway, not with a crane, anyway. Any job I goto with my blower truck is never easy. ‘‘Let’s push 500 feet through mud to
restore wetlands,’ or, ‘Let’s push 300 feet upto a roof and put dirt on a roof, blow under-neath foundations, get underneath a house, acrawl space.’ The kinds of things you runinto are always interesting, and you see howyou can save people money doing it.”
40 Years of Earning a SolidReputation
Known as a high-end, premier companyfor their exceptional landscape design-builds, the Muoio team gets jobs by merit.Besides working for Manafort Brothers
Inc., the companies have subbed for HolmesLandscaping LLC, NarragansettImprovement, Cardi Corporation, CatalanoConstruction, A.A. Will and Moriarty andAssociates in Boston, Albert J. WelchConstruction, Valley Crest, and many others. They are certified to work for the RhodeIsland Department of Transportation(RIDOT) and the Department ofEnvironmental Management (DEM) for fil-ter sock and their blowing truck permittingprocess. They also construct walls of the earth
itself. “We build structural walls out of filter
sock. They are green, structurally stablewalls,” he said. “Instead of a harsh, environ-mentally unfriendly block wall, you get agreen wall, still structurally stable.Everything nowadays is turning green.“We have a very good reputation. We
might be more expensive than the next guy,but we get the job,” added Muoio. Muoio indicated that it’s his father’s work
ethic that has led the way for his own suc-cess.“My father loves work. He loves it every
day, I’ll tell you that,” he said. He also knowshow to adapt with the working environment.
“You have to change with the times tosurvive. You have to stay very aggressive, asfar as bidding, getting out there, shakinghands,” said Muoio. “It is still leg work. Youhave to be healthy. You have to pound thepavement. It’s more about relationships.People (do) Facebook, Twitter, and then say,‘We are good.’ Not in our business. You haveto get out there and prove yourself and doeverything you said you would.”They also give back to the community,
donating landscaping jobs and instructingstudents at both Cranston High School Eastand Tolgate High School. “It’s a chance for the kids to come out and
learn, something different rather than every-day books,” said Muoio. He pondered his own and his father’s
combined 60 years together on site, 40 offi-cially. “It’s great. I could never picture myself
being in an office, sitting inside,” saidMuoio. “I like what I do.”For more information, visit
