Thunder Claps THE MATCHUP: The Fisher Cats are the only team to sweep the Thunder this season, doing so in a three-game set on Tuesday (doubleheader) and Wednesday at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium in Manchester. Trenton went 10-8 in the head-to-head season series in 2018, including 7-5 at ARM & HAMMER Park. This is the first of three trips that the Fisher Cats will make to Trenton in 2019; the ‘Cats will return June 27-30 and August 19-21. HOME COOKIN’: With four consecutive wins, the Thunder have sole possession of first place in the Eastern Division and are now 9-1 at ARM & HAMMER Park this season. Trenton has statistically performed better at home than on the road this season, especially in major pitching categories; the team has a much lower ERA and opposing batting average at home games (2.17, .206) than on the road (5.24, .277). BUCKLING DOWN: After struggles on the last road trip against Portland and New Hampshire, the Thunder pitching staff has limited opponents to two or fewer runs in each of the first four games of this homestand. Over the four games, Trenton hurlers have allowed just seven runs (five earned) across 32 innings for a 1.41 ERA. HOT STREAKS: Francisco Diaz and Ben Ruta have both reached base safely in each of their last 9 games, matching the team’s longest on-base streaks this season. Meanwhile, Chris Gittens owns a 6-game hitting streak, just one shy of matching the club’s longest hitting streak of the year (Diaz and Rashad Crawford have both rattled off 7-game hit streaks). ROOT, ROOT FOR RUTA: West Windsor, New Jersey native Ben Ruta leads the Eastern League with a .386 average, .494 on-base percentage, and 8 stolen bases, is tied for the league lead with 10 doubles and 16 runs scored, and leads the Thunder with 27 hits (2 nd in EL). Ruta also has nine multi-hit games, tops among Trenton hitters. THREE IN A ROW: Having made the Eastern League playoffs in each of their last three seasons, the Thunder look to match a franchise record with a fourth consecutive postseason appearance. The team previously achieved this from 2005 to 2008, the final two years of which saw the Thunder win their first two Eastern League championships. WHO THEY ARE: Of the 25 players on the Thunder roster, 12 were drafted by the Yankees, nine were signed as minor league or international free agents, three were acquired via trade, and one was claimed off waivers. Fifteen of the 25 played under Patrick Osborn at high-A Tampa at some point in 2018. E.L.
