Hon. Consul for France along with a number of other positions. Rob is an authority on and researches into Melanomas and was recently awarded $250,000 for research into this area. His expertise has extended to operating on bears, monkeys and a boa constrictor, he has been a volunteer with Interplast Australia, and has been recognised with a Paul Harris Fellowship for this work. He has also been recognised by the Aust. Government with an AM and the WA Government with a Citizen of the Year Award in the category of the Professions.

This Week's MeetingThursday 16th December is our Christmas function and the second birthday of our club (chartered on 19th December).

A number of members are away or have their work functions so please be sure to attend and invite friends and family to celebrate with us.

Remember the meeting will be on Thursday not Wednesday this week at the Nedlands Golf Club.

Final numbers are required by the caterer by Monday and pre payment into the Club Operating account would be appreciated to avoid collection of money on the night.

It should be a fun night with Max Kay as our speaker. Max had the ‘Old Time Music Hall’ many long years ago and more recently was a Perth City Councillor. He also assisted the Club with our Burundi Peace Choir project.

Ambassadorial Scholar Justin Hewett

Unfortunately our Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholar Justin Hewett has been assigned a University in Shanghai which was not on his list of study institutions. The institution assigned to Justin will not allow him to undertake the study he plans for the outcome he aspires to.

With Rotary International President (RIP) Ray Klinginsmith in Perth all last week, both DG Ian Hutton and Secretary Di Collins, who is a member of the D i s t r i c t S c h o l a r s h i p Committee, took up the matter with RIP Ray to have the matter revisited by the Rotary Foundation in Evanston.

Knitted Toys from Margaret BrawleyThe wonderful lady who knits and knits all those wonderful toys has a number of her beautiful knitted toys for us. Justin Hewett’s parents Gary and Kim took the last lot to their orphanages in Cambodia and will make just as good use of this next batch.

A huge thank you to Margaret for the hours of work she puts into these toys and to Roma her friend who helps out financially with the cost of the wool.

BBQ at the Forsdyke’s Sat 8th JanuaryClaire and Daniel have graciously offered to host a BBQ at their home in Ellenbrook on Saturday, 8th January from 4.00pm to kick off Rotary in 2011.

Please bring meat and drink. Claire, Daniel and Claire’s parents will supply salads and desserts.

National Youth Science ForumFor the second year this event is being help in Perth as well as Canberra.

Host families are still needed to take students (in batches of 2, 4 or 6) for a single day, Sunday 16th. This day is halfway through their 2 week camp, and gives them an opportunity catch up on their washing and sleep. It is requested that hosts don't organise any activities. Students return to UWA at 8pm.

On Friday 14th January there will be a dinner for Host families and students to meet each other.

Host families must be Rotarians and at least one member of the household is required to have a Working with Children Card.

So far the Carot Collinses and Collinses have volunteered as hosts; if any other members of the Club are prepared to host students, please contact New Generations Director Marcos.

Meritorious Service Award

President Simone was presented with a Meritorious Service Award by Editor in Chief Bob Aitken for over four years of work in sourcing, collating and presenting articles and photographs on Rotaract ready to print each quarter for the Rotary Down Under Magazine.

In an email to Secretary Di, Editor Bob says “I was delighted to be able to recognise Simone. She is a real ‘treasure’ and remains a wonderful worker for Rotaract!”

Congratulations Simone, it is great to see your untiring efforts recognised.

Cruising ButterfliesA new initiative between Rotary in WA, the Yachting Fellowship of Rotarians and Make a Wish Foundation was launched during the Rotary Institute in Perth Thursday week before last.

The project took sick children out on a trip on the Swan river (on Rotarians' boats), ending up at the South Perth Yacht Club where the children and families joined with Rotarians after the

cruise for a sausage sizzle. C e r t i fi c a t e s were presented to the children and two boats w e r e i n a u g u r a t e d , named after the first District Governor of R o t a r y Internat ional District 946 Allan Eddy and the current RIP R a y Klinginsmith.

In the NewsOur club received two brief mentions in this last week’s Post Community Newspaper.

One mention was for our Pride of Workmanship Award to Ali and Eric and the second was to

Ken and ‘Rotary’ for collecting the monies for the Angel Academy School in Nepal. To date $13,500 has been sent to Rotary Australia World Community Service (all tax deductible) for Br James and Debbie’s project in Nepal.

In the Dec/Jan issue of the RDU Magazine are articles by President Simone on Social Networking and PP (Sec) Di on our magnifying microscope project.

The Week that WasIt was a huge week for Rotary in WA week before last with WA hosting the Rotary Institute, which happens once in 10 years if we are lucky.

It not only brought the RI President Ray and Judie Klinginsmith but Past RI

President and Rotary Foundation Trustee DK Lee and his wife Young Ja plus around 400 past, present and incoming District Governors to Perth for the week of training and meetings.

The week commenced with the annual address on the Rotary Foundation, the Dr. Ken Collins Address, presented by RI Pres. Ray Klinginsmith, continued with training for the District Governors Elect and Nominees and meetings of the Governors. This led onto the RC of Crawley’s 100th member celebration, attended by RI Pres Ray, Ken, Di, Bill Hassell and Margaret Stuart.

The week also included the Cruising Butterflies project, a visit to Government House, and the Institute with speakers such as former Governor General Michael Jeffrey (whom we told about our GSE Team from Wiluna to Fiji as he was born in Wiluna), Andrew Forest and a parade of speakers on Rotary and non Rotary topics.

Daniel and Claire attended the Rotary Foundation reception and Saturday night dinner, Ken presented on Polio Plus, and Ken and Di spent were delighted to serve as Aides to their friends Past Rotary International President and current RF Trustee DK & Young. DK is also an Ambassador at large for Korea.

Nigerian Rotarian Mobilizes Fellow Polio Survivorsby Susie O. Ma The RotarianDecember 2010

Polio survivor Ayuba Gufwan got around by crawling on his hands until his teens, when his uncle built him the wheelchair that allowed him to go to school and become a teacher.

In 2004, Gufwan, a member of the Rotary Club of Naraguta, Nigeria, helped found Wheelchairs for Nigeria, which provides free hand-pedaled wheelchairs to polio survivors like him.

George Camp, governor of District 7230 (Bermuda; part of New York, USA), snapped this image in Kano on a day when 30 people received their wheelchairs, which are made with bicycle parts.

“This girl was very shy, but when she got her wheelchair she just lit up, and I was lucky enough to catch a photo of her,” Camp says.

A tour of the factory, in the town of Jos, inspired him to donate to the effort. “It’s important to remember how far our money goes in these countries, and how important our contributions are to them and to The Rotary Foundation.”

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is observed on 3 December.

Progress for Rotary's US$200 Million Challenge for

Polio EradicationRotary International News7 December 2010

As of 30 November, Rotarians have raised about $155.3 million for Rotary's US$200 Million Challenge. These contributions will help Rotary raise $200 million to match $355 million in challenge grants received from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The resulting $555 million will directly support immunization

campaigns in developing countries, where polio continues to infect and paralyze children, robbing them of their futures and compounding the hardships faced by their families.

As long as polio threatens even one child anywhere in the world, children everywhere remain at risk. The stakes are that high.
