Last Week's MeetingA club forum was held to decide on some activities for the club and coordinators to look after the organisation of those projects.

The club agreed to concentrate on 3 fundraising events rather than looking at some purely social events at

this stage.

The 3 fundraisers are:• A Quiz Night, possibly

in August – headed by Donna Bicknell

• Young Chef – Bryant Stokes is looking into sponsorship to be able to progress this, as it has been stalled since January

• A lunch at Milner

College where students bring a dish that others pay to eat, with proceeds going towards a ShelterBox. Warren Milner is liaising with Margaret Stuart over this.

This Week's MeetingDavid Barnes, President of

the Multiple Sclerosis Society of WA will be addressing us on "Living with MS - Seeking a cure".

partner, family and friends. It would be great to fill the room as it adds significantly to the occasion.

Venue: Nedlands Golf Club, Melvista Ave, NedlandsTime: 6:30pm for 7:00pmCost: $50.00 per person for a 3 course meal with bar service available.

Magnifying MicroscopesCurrently there are 832 units on order from various clubs round the State for the shipment due in mid to late June.

La Mancha Resources Australia Pty Ltd has ordered 52 units. 25 of these are for the Coolgardie Primary School and 32 are for the Christian Aboriginal Parent-Directed School, an Independent Community School which is located in the Kurrawang Community between Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie.

The new system of requesting prepayment for the microscopes is working extremely well and the majority of clubs who have placed orders have already prepaid their invoices.

Paint Your PinkyOn Friday, 3rd June there will be a ‘Paint Your Pinky’ for PolioPlus at the North Cottesloe Primary School, 100 Eric Street, Cottesloe at 9.00am.

Any Rotarians who would like to come along and help paint pinkies are asked to do so. Please let Ken know that you are available.

‘Paint Your Pinky’ is endorsed by the Education Department to help raise awareness of diseases such as Polio and to assist in raising funds for the final push to eradicate the disease.

With CHOGM commencing on World Polio Day, 24th October, it is hoped that all schools and Rotary Clubs statewide will use that day for a ‘Paint Your Pinky’. It would make a significant impact if this can be achieved.

RYDANewman College has around 200 students participating in a Rotary Youth Driver Awareness Day on 16th August at Lathlain Park Oval.

Volunteers are still required to assist on the day. If you are able to help for even a few hours, it would be appreciated, also you will obtain firsthand experience of how beneficial this project is to our young students. Hamish Mackie is overseeing this project. Bryant Stokes is seeking a social worker and Police Department support for the event.

Remember that Working with Children Cards are required to assist with projects involving young people under 18 years of age.

Sponsors are required, so if you know of any business who would be prepared to sponsor even a few hundred dollars towards RYDA, please seek them out.

The Rotary Club of Matilda Bay are hosting a RYDA on 23rd June so if any members would like to go along to observe and get a feel for the event, it is a perfect opportunity to do so.

RYPENThe Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN) camp is being held at Point Walter 24-26th June. We have sponsored Interactor Martha Forrest plus a classmate of Martha's from St Hilda’s College, Sophie Gattorna-Hargrave.

Charitable FoundationMaryanne McKenzie from Talbot Olivier Lawyers wrote to the Club sending the Seal for the Charity Fund and a small invoice for costs for Incorporation Fee and Notice

of Incorporation in the West Australian.

Maryanne wrote:

“ Talbot Olivier has been pleased to assists you in creating a charitable fund capable of receiving tax deductible gifts for specific purposes. While this task was quite complex and time consuming, we trust the end result meets your needs. Talbot Olivier is pleased to inform you that our directors have agreed to forgo the legal costs incurred for time spent in this matter and to offer our services to date on a pro-bono basis to your club,. Message From The Chair - Meeting in Person Helps Build FriendshipsThe Rotarian - June 201I

Fellowship and Friendship are fwo of the cornerstones on which Rotary is built - two components of Rotarians' work that are indeed important. At any given meeting one can only do a certain amount of work during the time allocated for the actual meeting. An equal amount of work is done during coffee breaks, luncheons, dinners, or over a drink in the bar. These opportunities make it possible to get to know the person - or see the face - behind all the e-mails and the phone calls.

Cyberspace has given an opportunity for rapid communication. We can have more frequent meetings at considerably lower costs. But has it helped personal relationships? I doubt it.

The supreme occasion to feel the internationality of our organization is the annual Rotary lnternational Convention - the latest one in New Orleans. To meet and greet Rotarians from all over the world during a period of almost a week is unforgettable. To enjoy the plenaries, to participate in the breakout sessions, to have a meal

with new and old friends are highlights during sucha convention. In addition, to look at the colorful dress worn by so many Rotarians, particularly from Africa, Asia, and South America, is an aesthetic delight. May a Rotary In terna t iona l Convention never be transferred to cyberspace!

With due respect for cyberspace, the face-to-face meetings are of highest value. The possibility of a handshake or a hug can never be replaced. If a cyberspace convention were to happen, weshall lose the fellowship and friendship, which are so important when we are Building Communities - Bridging Continents through Service Above Self.

Wanted - Seats to Attend AFL Game... Seven Seats sought for Malaysian Short-Term Youth Exchange Team - In Perth between 28 May and 12 June 2011

In the past, I have been able to locate people who have reserved boxes and seats at AFL games that they are either not using, or are prepared to offer, them on a

certain date to Rotary.

District 9455’s Youth Exchange Program, in conjunction with a number of Clubs, is conducting the Western Australian leg of a reciprocal Short Term Cultural Exchange between Malaysia and Australia on the above dates. As part of this exchange we would like the Malaysian team of 6 students (4 boys and 2 girls, 15-17 years), together with their Team Leader, to attend an AFL game at Patterson Stadium on either the weekend of Saturday 4/Sunday 5 June or alternatively on Saturday 11 June 2011 (the preferred weekend being the first listed). If any Rotarian is in a position to offer seats to this Exchange Team then this would be greatly appreciated.

Please contact Bruce Dufty, STEP Co-ordinator, District 9455 Youth Exchange Program on 9447 8605, 0421 735 372 or by email [email protected] if you can assist in any way.
