On 13th June 1830 Felix Mendels -sohn Bartholdy finished his Rondocapriccioso. After the Leipzig pub-lishers Hofmeister and Breitkopf &Härtel had refused to publish thework – probably because of theseemingly excessive fee demand-ed by the composer – the workeventually was published byMechetti in Vienna and J. B. Cramer, Addison & Beale inLondon almost at the same time.Originally intended as a study,Mendelssohn revised the pieceand added an andante introduc-tion, thus managing to create oneof his most outstanding pianoworks which has maintained anunfailing popularity until today.The new edition of the ViennaUrtext Edition is based on allextant sources, with the first edi-tion from London being of particu-lar significance.

Hermann Schroeder (1904-1984)wrote his Sonatina da camera atthe suggestion of Prof. Hugo Rufwho had been looking for attrac-tive new music for his ‘old’ instru-ment and for his students at theCologne Musikhochschule. Thiswork is a little three-movementsonata which draws on both theBaroque harpsichord tradition andthe classical sonata form (in theouter movements). These ele-ments are combined very suc-cessfully with a modern tonal lan-guage; with humour and the joy ofvirtuoso playing getting their fairshare too. It is to be hoped thatSchroeder’s single work for harp-sichord (apart from his ‘Duplum’for organ and harpsichord, SchottED 6233) will be played by manyperformers and included in therather small contemporary reper-toire for harpsichord as a valu-able addition.

Vol. 1 covers aspects rang-ing from the orientation on thefingerboard via changes of posi-tion, vibrato and trills to changesof strings and double stops. Silvius Leopold Weiss (1686–1750) is considered to be themost important lutenist of theBaroque era. His works for theinstrument fascinate with theirelegance and grandeur. Thiseffect is achieved by making thebest possible use of the tempera-ment of the Baroque lute withwhich third intervals – in contrastto fourths on the guitar – are pre-dominant. The pieces are com-posed in such a way that thelutenist can often strike openstrings and seldom has to managedifficult fingerings or stretch theleft hand. In the first movement, Prologue, the solo instrument stands out while declaiming in a recitative-like manner. The second movement, Concerto, follows the meaning of theword 'concertare' = 'compete' bycombining the soloist and the stringensemble 'competitively' to form aunified whole. The short epilogue isa fading away, with strictly alternatingsolo instrument and strings.

The chamber music works areamong Hindemith’s most success-ful instrumental works of the1920s. At the world premiere of‘Chamber Music No. 1’, the audi-ence even demanded a repetitionof the third and forth movements.But the title of the series of worksconsisting of seven compositionsaltogether is misleading: The indi-vidual pieces rather have concer-tante soloistic features. No. 1 ischaracterized by ‘instruments’,like a can filled with sand and asiren, as well as the rich use ofthe percussion; No. 5, on theother hand, even bears the title of‘viola concerto’.

Hummel’s piece for solo violoncel-lo and 13 strings follows HermannHesse’s famous poem ‘Stufen’(‘Steps’) with regard to form andcontent. Hummel, a cellist himself,arranges the solo part with playing techniques and tonecolours that are typical of theinstrument. The work begins andends with a perfect fifth whichsets a clear, concise motif. Shortphrases in distinctive bowing pat-terns and harmonics determinethe intensive dialogue betweensolo instrument and the group of13 string instruments. At the end,the tension leads to an all-explanatory B-A-C-H theme: anunmistakable homage to the oldmaster.

A surprising title! Although Wagnerremained true to his favouritegenre with his arrangement ofGluck’s ‘Iphigénie en Aulide’, butthe connection to Gluck’s tonallanguage is not immediately evident. The compositionwas shortened and the text of thepiece completely changed.Wagner even made changes inthe instrumentation, thus givingthe music of Gluck a new touch.
