    Dear Principal,

Students from across the Niagara Region are promoting the WE generation with Hand in Hand Niagara, a

regional youth in action group registered under Free the Children the worlds largest network of children helping

children through education. Based on the Me to We movement, where we move from thinking thoughts ofme to

thinking about others, Hand in Hand Niagara is empowering young people to use their talents and take action to

make a positive difference in the world, and encouraging students to participiate in a school fundraiser to help free

    children from poverty and exploitation.

Hand in Hand Niagaras fundraising goal is to collect $50,000 to adopt two villages with Free the Children-

one in India and one in Sierra Leone. Focusing on sustainable development, each village will be provided with aschool and educational programming, mobile health clinics and lunch programs, alternative sources of income for

women to better support their families, and access to clean water. This is an amazing opportunity for Niagaras

schools to bond together in support of a WE generation. We can be the change and we can make a difference!

On behalf of Hand in Hand Niagara, we hope that you will join us in our regions exciting Me to We

mission. To spread the message, our youth team has created a unique, fun and interactive presentation for

elementary school students grades 5 through 8: theME to WE SHOW. The one-hour performance has a 3-part focus:

Educate: explain with passionate words, pictures and incredible videos, issues surrounding povertyand education around the world

Empower: empower the youth to get involved in the community, and help students understand thatyouth have the power to be the change in our world

Call to action: launch a simple but exciting fundraiser event in the school; allowing students totake action, become active members of society, and join Hand in Hand Niagaras missions in India

    and Sierra Leone.

This is an incredible opportunity for students to be moved, inspired and also geared towards a future of

high leadership. Created by youth for youth, the ME to WE SHOWwill bring the schools and the youth of Niagara

together - one family in support of a great cause. We hope that you will join us this year. We would be thrilled to

host theME to WE SHOWfor the students of your school.

Please contact us at [email protected] or our A.N. Myer teacher advisor, Kelly Parlatore at 905-358-

    PRESENTATION BEGINS

Every 60 seconds, someone is murdered.. Every 10 seconds someone dies from AIDS.. Every 3 SECONDS

someone dies from Poverty POVERTY, pretty scary dont you think? And.what if that someone was person

    you loved, or even you?

Picture your sister, your mother, YOU.Innocent people, living their regular day-to-day lives getting beaten.

Reah, the girl we just heard crying, begging not to be found by refugees hiding in a closet, was 12 years old. Shedreamed of being a teacher but never returned to school after that one fateful afternoon. Reah was beaten and then

murdered by refugees in Sierra Leone. She was amongst the 100,000killedduring the civil war that lasted11 years.

Another person, Sunjeetis 4 years old he wakes up everyday at sunrise not to attend school and see his friends like

you and I. But rather to carry explosives into a DANGEROUS coal mine in India.Sunjeet works in the mine to

provide money for food for his family. Not only has he lost his best friend, AND HIS ARM from an explosion in the

mine, but his childhoodand his chances at a better future. And thats about as much as his life, willEVER BE:

working 12 hours a day, EVERDAY, with the fear of getting beaten if he cant keep up.

Now take a look at you and me for example:

Luckily, we are here at school a lot of what we need, we can find. But these children,THESECHILDREN,inSudan, in China,in Ethiopia,in India, in Sierra Leone,COULDNT,CANT, WONT. NO, they cant sleep in on

that Saturday morning, No they cant read that comic book. No they cant listen to that favourite song. No they cant

drink that GLASS OF CLEAN WATER. ..They are left withLESS than the bare minimum. And they fend for

themselves with what they have. (pause)They carry layers of bricks on their heads, they use animal feces for

foundation for their slums. They cut grass with knives AS LONG AS THEIR ARMS, to feed cattle, to provide

money, their family NEEDS to surviveKids who will never go to school, because they just HAVEto work,

theyve been given no choice, NO CHOICE,NO CHOICE! Kids who dont have dreams, kids who dont even

know what dreams are when you ask them.Like Santiago in Ecuador, the best soccer player in the whole school. He

wants to be a pilot. But hes (hhh) never seen a plane before. Kids with dry hands, and chapped faces, playing in dirt

fields covered with broken bottles, but theyre laughing.Theyre having fun with the simple things. Where we here

in America need our iPods, our laptops, the coolest clothes, the latest trends, to be happy,or satisfied or so we

think While people in developing nations, gather their communities, to build a school, they come fromMILES,

they PILE out of the buses, to finish a building they know theyll never use,but their kids will, and they know its the

right thing to do.To help THEIR community, to hold each other upIts 2009EVERYWHERE.We really dont

live, we really cant live, WORLDS APART.

Ladies and gentlemen, lets give it up for Sara MacLauchlan!

Now, what is interesting is that havent we all heard of statistics likes these before?... YES! In fact, weve heard

the big numbers so many times that we almost forget their meaning. A bird dying of old age is the way of life, but

this is not. 20 million people dying of AIDS is not a natural cause, there is nothing normal about 276 000 childslaves working in hazardous conditions. Are these just a bunch of big jumbled up numbers? These numbers are so

big they have to mean something! There are people behind them. Its important to realize that numbers, like the

numbers in this music video, are just facts. It is the people behind those numbers who matter.

Ladies and gentlemen, if you could just take one moment Right nowPicture yourself (thats you and you and

you) being a part of one of those big numbers. Not being able to go to school because you have to work 12-16

hours/day to provide for your family, drinking bacteria-contaminated water just to survive, suffering from

malnutrition being a child living under less than one dollar/day living in what is called: extreme poverty.

(long pause) and so I ask myself, were some people just lucky to be born in certain favourable conditions and others

not so much? Perhaps... but what is more important and amazing, is that with the resources that we are LUCKY to

HAVE HERE in Canada, we CAN reach out, give back, and help improve the future of others! Plus, we can have

fun while we are at it! Believe it or not, it is human nature to be a little selfish sometimes, but it is also human natureto love, to share and to give to others! Like many great leaders say, giving and helping people are amongst most

rewarding and fulfilling actions. True joy and satisfaction in life are found only through giving and enhancing the

lives of other people. And you know what the best part is? This can be accomplished no matter how fortunate or

unfortunate we are. Here is an example of a young woman, Jessi Cruikshank, who traveled to India to try to help a

community rise from absolute poverty. She contributed to the building of a school for children in the village of

Udaipur. She also spent one day with an eleven-year old girl, Woudi, helping her with her household chores. Just

that one simple day made a significant impact on both Woudis and Jessi Cruickshanks life. Here is a glimpse at

    their day:

(Jessi clip 8:09 min 11:15 mins)

Jessis incredible experience with Woudi taught her that just simple acts of kindness like helping someone with thedishes or having a nice conversation, can make a positive change is someones life. Jessi was moved by this. Today,

she works with MTV television studios and is continuously contributing to aid projects locally and overseas. Ms.

Cruickshank is also a motivational speaker who is inspiring awesome people like YOU AND I, to make it to the top

against all odds and togetherbe the change in our world.

To crank up our energy and to add to Jessis message, we now have a SPECIIIAALLL performance, a song, written

by Joe Opatowski; a Free the Children speaker. Joe was a passionate philanthropist who in 2004, tragically died in a

car accident on his way home to Toronto; after doing a presentation, much like todays, at a Secondary School in

Ontario. Joe was a change-maker, a leader... he was only 20 YEARS OLD. He encouraged thousands of youth to

join the me to we movement, where we move from thinking MEand focussing on ourselves, to WEand

TAKING ACTIONin favour of humanity as a whole. So its ME TO WE. What do you guys think? should we

give it a try with the crowd? (we say YES!) alright, when I say ME TO you say WE. ME TO, WE. ME TO, WE.ME TO, WE!! (wooooot! Cheers!). That was awesome! Now, you might be asking yourself what are WE actions?

Well thinking and acting WE can be done through simple acts of kindness in our every-day lives, like opening the

door for someone, raking leaves for an elder, donating to a non-profit organization, or even just smiling... dont such

actions make you feel good? its all about doing things that benefit not only ourselves but others too. Based on the

ME to WE philosophy Joe inspired so many young people. Today he inspires US (point to us), and hopefully

YOU as well. So here is his song, here is his message:

    Me to We

    Is what we see

    If we could already be

The change we wish to see

In our lives in each day

By the words that we say

About the world that we can make

    By our PASSIONS

    As they turn into actions

    Me to We

    Is what we see

    If we could already be

The change we wish to see

In our lives in each day

By the words that we say

About the world that we can make

By our PASSIONSAs they turn into actions

Lets move from ME to WE

And change the world from what we see

    To something that embodies

    Generosity

Lets move from ME to WE

And change the world from what we see

    To one home, one family

Cuz it doesnt take a genius

To see that things need to change

But no one person has the power to rearrangeAll of the things that are bringing us down

Itll take a whole world to make a smile from a frown

Every two seconds somebody dies of starvation

Poverty and hunger in every single nation

40 wars spent 1 trillion dollars this year

We should fund education instead of investing in fear

    Ecocide, genocide, homicide, suicide,

So many words for, destruction to live its life

People get angry and they get up with guns

But when more people died a few years back from suicide globally than war

We know were not having fun

Priorities need to change, were not doing enoughWe ignore a man on the street corner cuz his luck if rough

They say crime rates are jumping through the roof

The same reasons not to trust everyday on the news

So many types of sufferings which humans can endure

Straight up, there is more than one way to be poor

Lets move from ME to WE

And change the world from what we see

    To something that embodies

    Generosity

Lets move from ME to WE

And change the world from what we see

    To one home, one family

When you wake up, try to find a smile

Recognize: were alive, but only for a while

Look around you, only two races to choose and find

Multiple-choice-answer: human cruel or human kind

RESPECT that there is more than one way to live

We can be people who take

And we can be people who give

Changing the world can be as simple as a hug,

Holding the door open and not saying youre done

Saying something positive when negative surrounds

Speak from your heart, grow from what you found

A stranger is a friend thats passing you by

If he looks too serious, pass him a smileIf hes still unfamiliar, ask him his name

Strangers are extinct if and when they do the same

So first we need some visions and we have to set some goals

Like ending hunger by filling every single bowl

And ending poverty as if money grown on trees

Lets stop voting war, lets start voting peace

Lets move from ME to WE

And change the world from what we see

    To something that embodies

    Generosity

Lets move from ME to WEAnd change the world from what we see

    To one home, one family

    This is it, once chance

We can do it, learn the dance

In the streets by the way, that we choose to live

By doing what we do with the ME we give

To the WE see, every single bodyUNITED

    ONE family,

one race, one globe, one humanity,

    that they callHUMAN KINDNESS (everyone)

    cuz love aint dead.

Walk off seriously for effect. Then cheer WOOT! Lets have another Me to We chant! This side of the room will be

ME, this one TO, and the left side is WE. Ready? When I point to you, you can shout out your word as loud as

possible! ME TO WE ME TO WE ME TO WE ME TO WE!!!! (clap)

Ladies and gentlemen lets show the world what, WE, an awesome group of teenagers can do! Now, by a show of

hands, how many of you have heard people say that youth are, APATHITIC, in other words: lazy and uninterested?

Well Ill tell you something. If you look at that word all it really says is PATHETIC. That statement is pathetic!

Why do you think that in history young people have almost ALWAYS been the forefront of social movements? Its

because yes we are young! Yes we are energetic! Yes we are intelligent and talented! Lets use those talents and be

the change we wish to see in the world! Yes we CAN together make a positive impact! Yes we CAN together help

generate positive change! YES WE CAN! And YES WE WILL!

Have you seen pictures like these on TV before? Weve all watched World Vision and UNICEF commercials that

show children living in difficult environments.. sad music in the background. Weve seen them so often that its

almost, superficial, no? And many of us felt sad... and we said that wed love to help... but then we changed the

channel on the TV screen... pretended we forgot what we saw... and life just moved on.

Well, lets take it a step back. Lets remember this time. If everyone on this planet remembered once to share their

food, the entire planet could eat 3 times. You know in Europe alone $11 billion will be spent on ice cream this year,

while it costs approximately $9 billion to provide global clean drinking water, $12 billion will be spent in North

America on perfumes and makes, while it costs the same amount to produce reproductive health services for allwomen now we are not saying we shouldnt purchase these items but being aware of the fact that contributing

some of our extra spending money towards global development projects would have a significant impact over time.

Lets remember next time! This is your chance, the time where you can do something small, like donate your ice

cream money for example, and know that you have helped a village in Africa, you have made someone smile in

South-East-Asia remember about others! YES YOU CAN! YES WE CAN all of us together here at _____!

Alright so its time to reveal a BIG secret! Who are we this team of eight people up here? We have Nia, Nigel,

Corie, Andrew, Tina, Eva, Joanna and Adriana!

We are all part of an international youth in action organization called Hand in Hand. With the support of the

ENTIRE Niagara Region, thats right, schools from across the board, community groups, mayors youth councils

and businesses, Hand-in-Hand- Niagara is engaging peers like you and I to work together to make a difference in

OUR world. The regions goal is to raise $50,000 to adopt two villages with Free the Children, the worlds largest

network of children helping children through education. Each village will beprovided with a school and educational

programming, better health care, access to clean water, and alternative income sources such as goats for milking and

breeding, so that families can better support themselves. These FOUR KEY THINGS will allow the community to

rise from poverty and be given the chance at a brighter future.

One village is in rural India, where working for less than a buck a day is nothing out of the ordinary for children.

The second is located in Sierra Leone, Africa a country that was ravaged by an 11 year civil war, where children as

young as 4 were forced to serve their country.

(power point India and Sierra Leone)(3 mins) NIAAND CORIE

Like we said, lets remember ONCE.

Andrew and Corie speak about El Salvador! have websites or pamphlets available for info

So all in all, taking a look at our world, the youths powerful impact, Andrews incredible experience, and the Me to

We event weve had today. We think it is safe to say, that it is not about what you have in this life, its about what

you choose to do with it.

So now, its YOURTURN, its OUR TURN, its ____ TURN, TO ACT WE!

We are challenging ourselves and you, all STAFFMEMBERS AND STUDENTS here at _________school to

participate in _________s Me-to-We event! The challenge, THE CHALLENGE... is to EACH raise 15 dollars with

    Hand in Hand.

It may seem like much or it may seem like little, but it can come QUICKLY! Lets save our lunch money, or

postpone that ticket to the movies. Lets ask mom, dad, aunts, grandmas, grandpas, neighbours, friends or

colleagues whoever we can think of! Its a great cause and just like us, others are willing to give. And the great

part is, we dont just have one night to collect funds (although we know its possible), but three entire weeks. We

CAN do this. With ______ people we can raise over ___ thousand dollars! Thats more than ______of Niagaras

    final goal, IN ONE EVENT!

Pledge forms will be handed tomorrow morning to EVERY STUDENT in the school Any amount of money we can

raise makes a difference, but the challenge is 15 dollars. As soon as you have collected your donations, please drop

them off to your home room teacher, and you will get to take part in an awesome __(event)___ to ______!

OH! and lets not forget school name has offered to give _____(TBA)_______ for the grade, thats right, THE

GRADE, that raises the most funds!

Lets get out there, and show the world what weve got!

Start slow clap. And get it faster and faster and faster!!!!! CHEER! ME TO WE! cheerleaders come!
