Introduction B80 requires that the concrete used in the manufacture of the spacer blocks meets the requirements of the specification for concrete used in the work. The requirements are as follows.

would be insignificant. Further, the spacer blocks are cast off site and will be a minimum of 28 days old by the time they are used in concrete pours. On this basis, the concrete in the spacer blocks will have undergone the bulk of its total drying shrinkage by the time the spacers are used. Sorptivity testing is nominated in B80 under some circumstances. The purpose of sorptivity testing is to determine the effectiveness of curing that does not meet one of the deemed to comply methods in B80/E. In this case, the concrete supplied to us was water cured and so sorptivity testing was not required. However, for the sake of completeness, sorptivity testing has been carried out. Durability performance was assessed using chloride diffusion and chloride migration testing. 2. Test Program Samples for testing were supplied by PEDS Industrial Pty Ltd. Two types of samples were supplied, as follows. Concrete cylinders understood to have been made from the concrete used in the manufacture of the spacer blocks. These were used for strength testing as well as chloride diffusion and chloride migration testing. Concrete beams understood to have been made from the concrete used in the manufacture of the spacer blocks. These were used for sorptivity testing. Samples were tested in accordance with the following methods. Compressive Strength - AS1012.8 Concrete cylinder samples were tested in compression. Chloride and sulphate content – AS1012.20 Concrete cylinders were tested to determine chloride and sulphate content Chloride migration – Nordtest NT Build 492 Concrete cylinders were tested to determine the chloride migration

value. Chloride migration – Nordtest NT Build 443 Concrete cylinders were tested to determine the chloride diffusion value. Sorptivity – RMS T362 - Beam samples, cured in the same manner as the spacer blocks, were used to determine sorptivity. 3. Results The results of the testing are shown in the laboratory test reports in Appendix A. These results are summarized in Table 1, below. TABLE 1 – Summary of Test Results Sample Test Age Mean Result Cylinder Compressive Strength MPa 100 Cylinder Chloride content Kg/m3 0.096 Cylinder Sulphate content % of cement 2.5 Cylinder Chloride Migration m2/s x10-12 0.16 Cylinder Chloride Diffusion m2/s x10-12 0.58 Beam Sorptivity mm 0.7 4. RTA B80 Compliance The test program carried out on this trial mix has demonstrated that the concrete spacers supplied by Peds Industrial comply with the requirements of B80 for Exposure classification C.

This is on the following basis. The deemed to comply provisions of B80 for water cured concrete in exposure classification C are nominated in Table B80/E.1. The compressive strength exceeds 60MPa as nominated in Table B80.6. The water cement ratio of the concrete is no known, however, a compressive strength of 100MPa means that the water cement ratio will be well below the specified maximum of 0.4. Table B80.6 nominates an upper limit of 4.0x10-12m2/s when chloride migration is measured using the method in Nortdets NT Build 492. The result was 0.16, which is well within the specified limit. Table B80.6 nominates an upper limit of 2.5x10-12m2/s when chloride migration is measured using the method in Nortdets NT Build 443. The result was 0.58, which is well within the specified limit. Table B80.7 nominates a sorptivity upper limit of 8mm for concrete for use in Exposure Classification C. The measured value of 0.7mm is well below this limit. Chloride and sulphate levels were well below the specified limits. The maximum allowable chloride content for Exposure Classification C is 0.3kg/m3 (Table B80/5) and the measured chloride content is less than 0.1. The upper limit on sulphate content is 3% and the measured sulphate content is 2.5%
