TestimonialDear TomI would like to start by saying a big thank you.Myself & Margaret are incredibly happy with theoutcome of our new kitchen. From the very beginning of the job to the very end your help, advice and knowledge I believe made all the difference to a perfect finish.

We can’t believe the transformation from how itlooked before to how it looks now. I can honestlysay I have never met a builder who takes suchpride in his work. I also didn’t think I would evermeet a builder who is more fussy than the customer themselves. Thank you to al your team who were always polite, thoughtful & professional.I will of course always be using TSD to carry out allour future work & will always with great pleasure recommend you to friends, family & potential customers.

Best RegardsPeter Krause

This month marks the 27th year of Malden Fortnight. Months of hard work have gone into organising this year’s programme, both by the committee and individual event organisers and we all hope that residents will come out in force and enjoy the wide range of events, targeting our whole community. If you haven’t already got a copy of the Diary you can tear out page 27 and stick it on your fridge or notice board. And, if you’re up for a challenge then why not see if you can tell me the locations of the 7 HUGE banners that we’ve put up this year. Answers on a postcard… (or email!)This month, our resident historian Robin Gill gives us a fascinating insight into the history of the Malden Centre. I know I keep saying it, but thank so much to Robin – wherever you get your inspiration from, long may it continue! As we pack up for the school holidays, we’re saying goodbye to three lovely Head Teachers, from Christ Church Primary, the Study School and Westbury House. So au revoir Brenda, Anne and Jennifer. I’m sure you’ll all get a great send off (with lots of tears) and we wish you all the best for the future.I do hope you this month’s edition. Remember to check out all of our advertisers, without whom we wouldn’t have this magazine.

Best wishes

‘The Malden Centre hosted an Open Day for Cancer Research UK on Saturday 11th June. A few members of staff are taking part in this year’s Race for Life and decided to organise this event to raise as much money for the charity as possible. The main event on the day was a jumble sale, this would not have been possible without the generous donations we received from members of the public. There were also many activities for all the family to enjoy including FREE Swimming, Tots Funtime, Dance Classes, Art Classes and Face Painting. The event was a huge success, we exceeded our fundraising target of £600 by raising £1048 on the day

for Cancer Research UK. This month the Malden Centre will continue to raise

money for the charity, we will be selling Lavender bags at reception so please come in to support us. The Malden Centre would like to thank everyone for their support with the Open Day, including Pure Serenity, Venture Photography, Tudor Williams, C&N Hair, Phoenix Trading, Fossil, Mark Iles, Tracey’s Cupcakes and Meikah Jewellery for donating

prizes to our raffle. Any jumble that has remained unsold will be donated to Cancer Research and Marie Curie Cancer Care Charity Shops in the hope that it will continue to raise money for cancer charities.’

Lost MemoriesMalden & Coombe Royal British Legion will be celebrating its 90th Anniversary later this year. It is a founder member of the British Legion, as it was then known, which was formed in 1921.

Unfortunately over the years due to garage floods and records not being handed down from one person to another, early records have been lost. The records we have begin with an AGM Agenda dated 1956. This is an

appeal to people in Malden & Coombe and possibly elsewhere if they read this, to ask if in their family scrapbooks they have any early photographs or press cuttings which relate to the Legion. If

anyone does have any photographs etc they would be copied and handed back to the person who

owns them.

history From pottery to pottery

by Robin Gill

Twenty five years ago, work started on the building of Malden’s first purpose built swimming pool and community centre in Blagdon Road. The town had complained after first Surbiton (Lagoon) and Kingston (Coronation Baths) had been built for the local residents back in the 1930s. In 1938 a proposal was put forward for a new town hall, fire station, swimming pool and baths. At the time 800 houses in Malden were without a bath, so a place to wash was regarded as a necessity, not a luxury. But because it would have increased the rates by 4d or 5d it was rejected. As long ago as 1919 it had been proposed that a public hall be built in remembrance of the men from Malden who had died in the Great War. The hall was to include a social club, free library and a swimming bath. Like many ideas, it was a good intention, but lacked either public money, or a wealthy sponsor.

The clayfieldsBlagdon Road was (in 1870s) just a track leading from the farm of the same name across the fields to Traps Lane (High Street). It was along this road that in 1876 Benjamin Looker decided to build his pottery and brickworks. The clay in the company’s previous site on Kingston Hill was exhausted, and Benjamin had acquired the

14 acres which was part of the lands of Blagdon Farm to carry on his trade. In late September that year, a rumour had swept though the village that a field had been acquired by Looker for the manufacturing of bricks or pottery. While no formal application for building had been made, the Local Board let it be known that they regarded brick making as an “offensive pursuit that would not be tolerated”. The Board also received a petition from several local ratepayers objecting to the proposal, the local doctor (Dr Child) also objected on health grounds.

But, it wasn’t until December that Looker formally presented his plans to the Board. He stated that whilst he would be manufacturing bricks and tiles, any fumes would be carried downwards through the kilns, and would only be emitted “as far as possible from any dwelling” (there were no houses in Blagdon Road at this time). There would be no salt glazing, and only pure clay would be used. While some members of the Board had come round in support of the plans, they were still rejected by 5 votes to 4. The Board realised while they could not stop Mr Looker from coming to Malden, they could fine him every time he created a “nuisance” (an offensive incident) £50, plus 40 shillings (£2) a day. Letters were exchanged in the pages of the Surrey Comet between Mr Merryweather of the Board, and Mr Looker, and things came to a head when he started building wooden structures on his new land. While stone buildings would have shown he intended to proceed with his plans, wooden buildings could be erected without any problems. Looker went back to the Board with modified plans in April, and this time he was met with approval by 5 votes to 4. Merryweather resigned, and Looker was subsequently elected to the Board, took his place on the Planning Committee, and by the end of the year his pottery was in full production.

Looker died in 1892, and the new owners of the New Malden Potteries and Brickworks Ltd upset the local inhabitants by bringing in traction engines to transport their goods to the station. The noise and smell which emitted u

from these vehicles proved too much for the residents, and the company was wound up in the County Court in 1900.

A new company, Norbiton Potteries and Brickworks Ltd operated by the Johnson family took over the site, and continued to manufacture bricks. They received a boost in 1924, when a contract was drawn up supplying the site with clay from the digging out of tunnels during the extension of the Northern Line to Morden. During the 2nd World War, the kilns were put to another use for the drying out of desperately needed cereal crops that had been damaged by water. But by the early 1950s the pottery had closed down, and the site was occupied by a number of small businesses dealing with scrap metal, building materials, and old cars.

Sticky wicketMeanwhile another part of the farmland between Blagdon Road, and what became Burlington Road had been converted into a sports ground, which after 1886 Malden

Wanderers used as their permanent home ground. Quite what it was

like to play cricket next door to the pottery, with its tall chimney emitting smoke (however clean), and the constant presence of dust blowing across the area, is not known, but on some days it can’t have been pleasant. There were also tennis courts nearby, and the ground was used in the winter by

the local hockey team. The Wanderers continued to use the pitch until 1917, when they kindly lent it to the Canadian Medical Services CC for the following two seasons. The club resumed in 1919, and survived an attempt to turn their ground into a memorial garden for those who fell in the Great War. But they were unable to overcome difficult circumstances in 1920 when the ground was sold for £4000 to Lovell & Christmas Ltd for use as their sports club. Fortunately the Wanderers secured another site in Cambridge Avenue. The sports pitch remained until the 1950s when the site was converted into use as allotments; these remained until the 1970s, when the site was again developed.

Progress at lastIn 1961 Malden and Coombe Borough Council secretly made enquiries about purchasing the freehold of the entire site in Blagdon Road. It was agreed that when the various properties on the site became vacant the council would step in, and purchase the land, but because of some long leases this could take some time. By 1963 however, the reconstruction of the area could start with the provision of a public car park, also various buildings including a WVS Centre, a Citizens Advice Bureau, and a Civil Defence Training Headquarters. Acreage was “set aside” for various building projects in 1968 including the park, the community centre, and multi-storey car park (built in 1974-75).

In 1970 tenders were invited for the laying out of part of a new public open space occupying 4 acres and to include a six rink bowling green, children’s play area, and ornamental gardens. A year later work started on a further 14 acres to be developed to include an adult training centre, and another building for occupational therapy.

A large consultation exercise was undertaken by the council in 1985 to ensure the locals had a say in what was being planned, and the wish for a teaching pool for learners was paramount among the ideas.

The building contract for the main complex (including a swimming

pool and the teaching pool) was signed in March 1986, and work began the following month by the contractors Bernard Sunley. Malden also got its community hall, and adult education centre (moved from the former council offices in the High Street) with nine classrooms. Ironically one of the classes to be taught (and still taught) was pottery, hence the title of this piece. The building was also to pay host to the CAB, WRVS, and MEFAS. A competition was run by Kingston Council to name the centre. Names like Blagdon, Merryweather, and Beverley were rejected in

favour of the Malden Centre, with the council showing as much imagination as when it renamed part of Malden Road as the High Street.

Start /stopUnfortunately as soon as work began on the site, it was stopped by a judge following complaints from the Fountain Television Studios housed in the former Brycbox Youth Centre in Cocks Crescent nearby. The judge banned work on the building of the new centre while recording was taking place at the studios. As recording could take as much as 40 hours during the week, time left for building was limited, and residents nearby had to put up with some unsocial working hours. In spite of this, the building was completed on schedule and handed over to the Council on September 18th 1987, with the opening set for that November. The project, which cost £2.9 million, had caused problems with the local residents association, when pedestrian access from the residential area of Blagdon Road to the centre was granted despite a barrier being erected across the road. This was felt to

encourage users of the centre to park in the road to avoid parking charges. The residents

also took exception to the design of the building, and the metal roofing and extractor fans.

Fun for all the familyAt the centre, “Disco swims” were on offer for 9-15 year olds organised by the centres resident DJ, and the main pool could be used for competitions by local clubs and schools. The kitchen could be used by those hiring the Rose Room (main hall), and a special package could be booked for children’s birthdays involved use of the facilities followed by a party organised by the staff. For £4.25, 8-12 year olds could enjoy a disco swim followed by” Uncle Jacks Magic Show” then take part in sports and games as part of a Christmas Special. Other attractions were the “green room” primarily for use by clubs and societies, and a cafe for light snacks and drinks. The main pool was open from 10.30am seven days a week, closing at 10pm Mon-Wed, 6pm on Thursdays and 5.30pm on other days. Peak hour fees were 60 pence for children and £1 for adults. Adult Education courses on offer ranged from alternative medicine to genealogy. A hundred teachers were employed, and tuition was on offer for those with a disability.

The official opening took place on November 28th with the ceremony being performed by the Mayor Of Kingston Jenny Philpott. Unlike the mayors of yesteryear, she did not swim the first length of the pool, or throw the first pot in one of the craft rooms. Instead, she unveiled a plaque, watched a swimming display by the Kingston Royals, and planted a tree. The public were then allowed in to view the new facilities, with the first public swim being accompanied by a trumpet fanfare from the Kingston Youth Orchestra.

Thanks and the futureMany people had played a part in Malden finally getting its community centre and swimming pool, but special mention should be given to those councillors from the former Malden and Coombe Council ,who when Malden was annexed by Kingston in the 1960s did not let their promise for these facilities be forgotten by the larger borough.

It would be interesting to learn how many of those who use the Malden Centre nowadays come from the original catchment area of Malden and Coombe. It would be a shame if after campaigning for the resources since the end of the First World War; it was not enjoyed by the very people it was built for.

So it looks as though it’s going to be a lower, slower world – but hopefully still a growing one. This should not come as any surprise when you look around most of the developed economies, as it is quite hard to identify exactly where the demand

for growth is going to come from. Yes, the developing nations will continue to develop but they too will be affected as the demand from the developed nations is likely to be generally weaker. As we can read from researches of Reinhart & Rogoff in their book “It’s different this time”, economic recoveries after financial and banking crises tend to be far more protracted than the more “usual” economic recession.

After a decade of economic feast, if not an actual “boom”(and I remember calling

it that even then), in almost biblical symmetry are we not likely therefore to have ten years of lean – of which we have already had some three years? The thing about

a boom is that you can’t really see it until it goes bust. However, there were

indicators that certainly pointed to it but few wanted to take any notice

of it. Personal borrowing levels in the UK reaching over 100% of UK GDP - and even beating the US consumers on debt levels was one such measure. 125% mortgages were another and buy-to-let property schemes based on credit cards were evidence as well. So can we now search for the next indicators to see if they can provide us with any insight into the future? The main indication really seems to come from the banking sector. A combination of increased capital constraints, less capacity (fewer banks especially from overseas) and high levels of risk aversion, all mean that the volume of bank lending is likely to be less easily available compared

with the boom we saw before. Despite the somewhat illusory impacts of the much hyped Project Merlin, there are signs that levels of lending are picking up, but the question of the breadth of the margins being asked for is still a very sensitive issue.I think, though, the main indicators will be those of consumer and business confidence, as it will be the state of mind of those bodies that will really be the guide for any recovery. The Prime Minister was quite right to ask for a measure of “well being” and although it will be dependent on the style and type of questions being asked, it could provide a very useful indicator of the country’s attitude. Without sufficient levels of confidence, consumers spend less and companies are reluctant to invest more. However, much of this will be influenced by the style of political leadership itself – if our leaders continue to wallow in a depressing mire of talk of austerity then it will become a self-fulfilling sentiment. If on the other hand there is a greater focus on the positive developments of a slowly recovering economy, with improved business conditions allied to a gradual rising in personal living standards, then attitudes will change. This is as much a communication issue as a political one. VVoice

Earlier this year, I decided to enter a short story writing competition – the only rule was that the story had to be 500 words. It was all the idea of Radio 2 DJ, Chris Evans (my mum listens to him every morning – but I found out about it when I saw Chris on Blue Peter).

So, I wrote my story, sent it off and didn't think any more about it!

Then, my mum got an email to say I had got down to the last 900 – out of 30,000 entries! I couldn't believe it!

Then, a few weeks later, my mum got a phone call from a researcher called Ashley, to say that my story had got down to the final 25 in the under 9s group. All of our stories were going to be judged by some very famous authors – it was amazing that my story about 'Wolfie' was actually going to be read by writers such as Jacqueline Wilson and Anthony Horowitz!

Ashley invited us to go to a very famous book festival in a place called Hay on Wye where we would watch Chris Evans broadcast his show 'live' and we would find out who had won the competition. I was very excited and a bit nervous.

So, on June 2nd, me, mum and dad went to stay in a hotel near Hay – I made friends with some of the other children who had also got down to the final. The next morning, we were woken up at 4.30am (I was soooo tired) and we all got onto a coach that took us straight to the Hay festival. It was basically lots and lots of tents (and very famous authors) in the middle of the countryside!

We all sat down in the special studio (that was also in a tent) and for the next two hours we watched and listened to Chris Evans and his team do the live breakfast show. Sometimes – when Chris told us – we could shout and cheer. Other times – when a red light was on – we had to be very quiet and weren't allowed to talk or shuffle!

During the morning, the four runners up and one winner for the two categories were announced and read out by real live celebrities!! My favourites were Helen (from Blue Peter), an actor called Ben (who is Henry VIII in Horrible Histories) and Richard Hammond (who had flown into Hay in his own helicopter!)

Unfortunately, my story wasn't one of the runners up – but

I didn't really mind as my mum and dad said I had done so well to get that far (and Chris Evans said the same!). One of the boys I'd made friends with, Angus, wrote the winning story, so I was really happy for him!

By 9.30 it was all over – but it was one of the most exciting and nerve-wracking (and tiring) mornings of my life! Chris Evans said they will probably do the competition again next year, so I would definitely encourage everyone to give it a try! I never dreamt my story would have got that far – I'm already thinking of another one for next year. If you would like to read my story, then you can look on the BBC Radio 2 website www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/shows/chris-evans/500-words/

Pick up any Hi-Fi magazine and you’re likely to find a wealth of information relating to the latest and greatest in Hi-Fi and Home Cinema Electronics. Each product is rated on its own individual merits and, after much deliberation, is assigned a percentage score or star rating (dependant on which publication you’re reading).

So imagine this scenario... ‘A Man Called Horace’ has seen a review of a pair of speakers that not only fit his budget, they’ve got a 5-Star rating to boot! He doesn’t need much more convincing and buys them on a whim from an online retailer perhaps. They arrive sooner than he expected, so he calls in sick for the day to get them set up. He unpacks them...”Just look at that beautiful wood veneered cabinet. Twin 10 inch bass drivers. Oh my, it even comes with a certificate from the manufacturer. Result!” After putting the speakers into position exactly where he wants them and connecting them to his amplifier...it’s time to press play. Then suddenly...

“SHAKE, RATTLE AND ROLL!”...

What on Earth is going on here?” Horace exclaims. “I’m not even at quarter volume and the bass is rattling what little teeth I have left...” ”the review clearly states ‘bass is deep, tight and controlled at all volume levels’. This is a tub-thumping cacophony! I’m gonna give that editor a piece of my mind, and it would give me a great deal of satisfaction to horsewhip the reviewer!”... In fairness to the reviewer (and poor Horace’s sanity), there isn’t actually anything wrong with the speakers, or the Hi-Fi system for that matter. The problem is ‘the room’, or more principally the ‘acoustics’ of the room. ‘Room Acoustics’ relate to how sound behaves in an enclosed space, and there are many factors that could have contributed to the over exaggerated bass levels of Horace’s system...• Room Dimensions – A cube shaped room (or a room with dimensions that are equal or a multiple of one another, e.g. 2.5m x 5m x 10m) is more likely to cause a phenomenon called ‘standing waves’. This is when two sound waves of equal amplitude and frequency merge with one another. Depending on the timing of the waves, they will either combine and produce an unnatural bass (known as ‘Room Boom’) or they will cancel each other out, therefore making the bass thin and uninvolving.• Listening Position – If you play a piece of music on your Hi-Fi system and walk around the room, you will very likely hear the sound change (for better or worse). In most rooms, the bass will generally be louder the closer you get to the room boundaries, and get quieter the further you move in to the room. If moving your sofa for the ideal sound is out of the question, don’t worry!...by moving the speakers fractionally forwards or backwards (even as little as 5cm) you can dramatically alter the ‘phase’ of the sound waves so that they sound more natural and reinforced from your listening position.• Reverberation and Absorption – It’s not just bass that can be problematic in room acoustics. If you have a room with many hard surfaces (wooden floors, walls, windows, doors, coffee table, etc) the higher frequencies (vocals and cymbals for example) will reflect off these surfaces and bounce around the room causing reverberation. In an enclosed space, the sharp, sudden transient

effect of a sound can be quite jarring, and is quite different from the comfortable ‘ambiance’ of a concert hall where the direct sound can travel a fair distance and decay naturally before being reflected back. Now I’m not suggesting you carpet your walls and ceiling to combat these problems, as too much ‘absorption’ will render the sound ‘dry’ and lifeless. A simple rug and curtains can make a world of difference. “Taking it to the nth Degree” Even if the utmost care is taken to ensure correct speaker placement, no room can measure with absolute perfection across the entire frequency range. At some point in this band, the room will resonate, and (depending on amplitude) will rattle the photo frames off the mantelpiece. Even if you get the bass right, there is a chance that the upper frequencies require extra fine tuning. In this ever changing World of Hi-Fi and Home Cinema, a select few manufacturers have included automatic ‘Room Equalization’ software built in to their products over the last ten years. ‘Room EQ’ (for short) works to varying degrees depending on what the manufacturer believes to be an accurate representation of the original sound. It can also pay dividends to ‘tweak’ your system and experiment with speaker positioning prior to running the software program. Sometimes you can’t expect to put your speakers right in the corner and expect the EQ to trim off all of the unwanted bass. Computers can’t do every thing you know!“So how does it work?” Simply put, an amplifier featuring Room EQ will generally come supplied with a microphone which is placed in the main listening position at ear height. Once connected, the amplifier will generate a series of test tones to measure how each speaker reacts within the listening area. The resulting measurements are then manipulated in the digital domain (like a modern day graphic equalizer) so that the frequency response is perfectly neutral from the deepest T-Rex roar to a Humming-bird fart.“Comparing the difference” Once the measurements are made, and the EQ is applied, it’s a complete revelation! With the ‘EQ Off’, music sounds like it’s being played ‘Live in your living room’ (which is not a bad thing I guess). But switch the EQ on and you are suddenly transported to the venue that the music was recorded in. The sound belies the size of your listening room, free of the constraints of its acoustic limitations. “Build your home around your Hi-Fi!”...the Ideal Solution... ...a radical and foolish notion for many of us. But for the lucky few that have the opportunity to dedicate a room for Hi-Fi and Home Cinema (and luckier still to have Unilet involved in the room build), we can take into account all of the pit-falls listed above, and even recommend the correct equipment for the room size. In Horace’s case, the speakers he purchased were simply too large for the room. He could have opted for the smaller model which would have suited his room perfectly and he would have saved a couple of hundred pounds too. At Unilet, Horace would have received ‘sound advice at a better price.’ VVoice

Just like many other secondary school children, thirteen-year-old choirboy Kit Davey is busy preparing for his end-of-term concert. But this performance will be a little different. In just a few weeks time, he and forty-five fellow pupils from Tiffin School will take to the stage, not in their home town of Kingston, Surrey but over 10,000 miles away on the other side of the world.

Kit is a talented treble with the famous Tiffin Boys’ Choir, a school choral ensemble that performs regularly at The Royal Opera House and Royal Albert Hall. Now the boys are excitedly preparing for their most challenging assignment yet. A marathon twenty-day tour of Australia in August, performing to packed audiences in Brisbane, Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.

Once in a lifetime tripEven though he has sung solo on stage at the Royal Opera House, Kit admits to a few butterflies in the stomach. “It’s a really packed itinerary with lots of travelling, and we’re going to be performing in some huge venues. The last British school choirs to tour Australia were Eton and King’s Canterbury, and those tours were five years ago. This is obviously a real accolade for a state school to make the same trip, but it only represents the outstanding quality of our boys’ singing”

You might think from all this that Kit attends an exclusive music academy, but nothing could be further from the truth. Tiffin is a no-frills state school welcoming boys of all backgrounds. What sets it apart is a love of singing and a vibrant music curriculum that any private school might envy.

This passion is largely credited to one man, Simon Toyne, the choir’s musical director. He says: “These boys come from very different homes and musical abilities. We get them all singing from the day they enter the school at age 11. In particular, joining the Tiffin Boys’ Choir opens up a wonderful world of opportunities. How many thirteen year old boys get the chance to perform on stage to a packed audience in Sydney?”

To keep costs to a minimum, the choir will stay with local families wherever

possible. Even so, with no external funding, Kit and his friends are busy helping to raise money for the trip. Fundraising activities include sponsored runs, silences, car washing, packing bags at supermarkets, even singing at weddings!

Gala Performance at St James PiccadillyKit’s thoughts may be

thousands of miles away in Australia, but right now he has a more pressing engagement closer to home. They are taking part in the International Youth Arts Festival at Kingston Parish Church on Monday 18th July. You can support the Tiffin Boys’ Choir Australia tour by going to www.justgiving.com. Roast stuffed lamb fillet with honeyed

shallots Serves 4

Ready in 1 hr 30 minutes

recipePerfect for a summer Sunday lunch this lamb roast has a delicious stuffing made with fresh mint, dried apricots and pine nuts. Simply serve with boiled and buttered new potatoes, steamed green beans and a spoonful of tangy redcurrant sauce.

25 g (1oz) butter1 small onion, finely chopped1 garlic clove, crushed75 g (3 oz) fresh white breadcrumbs25 g (1oz) pine nuts8 no-need-to-soak dried apricots, chopped2 tbsp beaten egg2 tbsp fresh chopped mintSalt and freshly ground black pepper2 large lamb fillets2 tbsp light olive oil8 shallots, halved1 ½ tbsp honey, warmed

1 Preheat the oven to 190C/375F/Gas Mark 5. Heat the butter in a frying pan and gently fry the onion for 10 minutes until very soft, adding the garlic after 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in the breadcrumbs, pine nuts and apricots. Leave to cool.

Stir the egg and mint into the cooled mixture and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.2 Place the lamb fillets on a chopping board and, using a sharp knife, make a deep cut along the length of each fillet (taking care not to cut all the way through). Open each fillet out and flatten slightly with a meat mallet or rolling pin.3 Spoon the stuffing down the centre of one fillet then place the second fillet on top to enclose the stuffing. Tie together at intervals with fine string. Heat half the oil in a large frying pan and quickly fry the stuffed lamb over a high

heat until just browned all over. Place in a shallow roasting tin.4 Cook the shallots for 1 minute in a pan of lightly salted boiling water. Drain well then place in the roasting tin around the lamb. Pour the remaining oil over the shallots.5 Roast the lamb and shallots for 25 minutes. Remove from the oven and drizzle the warmed honey over the shallots. Roast for a further 10-15 minutes until the lamb is cooked to your liking. Cover the lamb and leave to rest in a warm place for 20 minutes before carving. VVoice

If last summer’s weather pattern is repeated, New Malden is in for a hot, dry July. Great for the holiday suntan, but not so good for keeping production going on our plots. Plants vary greatly in their ability to cope in dry conditions. Mature trees and established plants with a deep root system can withstand some drought. But many others will struggle to survive without regular watering. And don’t we know it on the allotment site as we queue up to fill our watering cans for the umpteenth time!

There are a number of mains water tanks on our site, and more are scheduled. We’re aiming for enough tanks to ensure nobody has to walk more than a few yards to reach one. But even if you have a tank right at the edge of your plot, it may still take many trips with two laden cans to water a whole plot at this time of year.

That’s if you follow expert advice to water thoroughly rather than just a

sprinkle. I calculate that I use one 2-gallon can of water per 8 to 12 foot row of plants. Our plots measure 75x 30 feet so it’s understandable that it can take up to an hour to do the watering. That may be excellent for developing muscly arms but it’s not good for your back: the combined weight of two average cans of water is 40

lbs. And any hapless newcomer who thinks they can simply attach a hosepipe to the tank is soon disabused: it would contravene the conditions of our lease. When I’m short of time or energy, I focus on the salad crops such as lettuce, radishes and tomatoes, giving them a good soaking at ground level. The celeriac is next to get a drink, to encourage the roots to swell. It’s thrilling to see fruitlets for the first time on the young stepover and cordon fruit trees: they get extra rations to persuade them to hang on to the crop.

We are fortunate to have a mains water supply; many sites don’t, but we pay for the privilege in our annual rent. And the more we use, the more our Allotment Association has to pay. What about harvesting rainwater? Most tenants with a shed or greenhouse on their plot have a water butt or two – some ingenious plot holders attach them to a pump - but these simply do not hold enough water to keep a productive plot watered for long when there’s a drought. This time last year, we were delighted to be offered twenty 1,000 litre industrial water tanks which, at £10 each, were snapped up. But even these monsters were empty by the end of last month. 1976 revisited? VVoice

contacting local businesses to gain their support in this initiative. I am pleased to announce that we have already been promised some funding and hopefully we will have these items back in stock soon. Despite a

good reduction, pick-pocketing is still occurring, please do not leave your bag unattended, ensuring bags are zipped up and in view at all times. Also do not allow yourself to be distracted by other people when using a cash machine. The safest cash points to use are always the ones inside the bank as they can prevent people hanging around waiting for an opportunity to attempt to take your card from you, whilst an accomplice distracts you.

I hope that you all have a wonderful crime free summer, however if this is not the case please feel free to contact me or the team to discuss any issues that you may be having. On a final note, a reminder of our opening times here at CI Tower,

Many thanks, Nicholas ELLIS PS 46VKBeverley Safer Neighbourhoods Team VVoice

This is my first article since returning from working with South Thames College on the Prince’s Trust team programme for a number of months. It is good to be back and I am very grateful to PS Plunkett for her hard work over the last few months.

With summer fast approaching, I wanted to reassure all residents that we have started working with Quadron and Kingston Council in keeping the park areas as free from problems as possible. My team are regularly patrolling the parks at all times of the day and night. We are also being supported by other local Safer Neighbourhood Teams who are also patrolling the parks for us. New Malden High Street has seen a reduction in the amount of pick pocketing. This is a direct result of a lot of work having been done to reduce this, including the giving out of anti theft devices. Unfortunately we have run out of stock of these items; however I am currently

Another year over, a new one just begunby Ian Duncan

“Birthdays are good for you. Statistics show that the people who have the most live the longest.” Father Larry Lorenzoni

My musing on what to write about this month co-incided with my birthday. I had been planning to write about the momentous step I’d taken into an uncharted world when I joined Facebook. I didn’t want to join but I thought I’d better get there before daughter number one.

Part of me had high hopes - I have a lot of bright, reflective friends, perhaps we would swap thoughts and ideas on current affairs, possibly indulge in some witty banter or may be even highlight an upcoming cultural event. Conceivably it would be self-improving; I would join a network of minds in forging new frontiers of creativity and inquiry.

However most of me anticipated something different: banal gossip, boasting, trivia and links to annoying animals. I reality it was somewhere in between – a little bit dull and ever so time-consuming. Perhaps its a generational thing as the nephews and nieces are on there all the time. Facebook is a near real time commentary on their lives and those of their friends complete with pictures and video. Someone recently suggested that every child would be required to change their name by deed poll at twenty one to allow them to escape the the trail of damaging evidence left on social networking sites. Certainly some of the photos aren’t suitable for viewing by uncles or future employers (About 30% of employers report that they use Facebook to check up on the people they are interviewing and to make sure their character fits in with the company) .

Happy Birthday to yaUsually I love birthdays: the cards, the presents, the

cake. However on the recent birthday I was feeling a little

melancholy until I received lots of birthday messages from firends on Facebook. Now most of

these would not send me a birthday card but that didn’t matter. It was great to be remembered. I like Facebook after all. However, I do not love the way time appears to be accelerating exponentially so that birthdays come around quicker and

quicker! (It made me feel sorry for the Queen who has two birthdays a year and is,

therefore, really in her forties.)

Hair today gone tomorrowWith each birthday, a number of things start to worry me. Trips to the doctors and dentists take longer but trips to the hairdressers take

longer. Why is it, as I think John Bishop pointed out, hair starts to redistribute itself away from places you want it, like the top of your head, to places you don’t like your ears and nose? And why does hair go grey? Perhaps the most worrying thing is, that with each birthday, I become

more like my father. Notably:• I look forward to mowing the lawn.• I watch the bin men take the rubbish away to make sure they get everything.• The heating bill causes me stress and I check the thermostat to make

sure that no one has increased the temperature• I drive below the speed limit, except on long journeys because the most important thing is getting between two places in record time.• On long journeys, I hate stopping.

Many Happy Returns! VVoice
