Continuing/Community Education at New Mexico Junior College

Training & Outreach

Youth College at New Mexico Junior College is a summer enrichment program for students first through eighth grade levels. The curriculum has been developed to offer an introduction and enhancement rather than for in-depth study. Classes are offered both weeks unless otherwise stated. Registrations will be conducted online, by phone or in person. Please call Selma Granado at 575.492.4707 to register, or visit us at the NMJC Larry Hanna Training & Outreach Facility located at 4000 West Millen, Hobbs, New Mexico.

Spanish! Spanish! Spanish!

Each Spanish lesson will include topics which are familiar. You will learn basic

vocabulary such as numbers, colors, clothing, food, family and animal names. In

addition, you will become familiar with daily expressions needed for daily life

situations such as greetings and courtesy expressions. Learning will be enhanced

through music and art activities. Bring an empty Pringles can to class.

Space Exploration This summer we are going to have fun! You'll learn about other planets and how life is there. You'll learn about BLACK HOLES and other space phenomenon. AND as a bonus we will get to shoot off rockets!! Even if you took the class last year come again and we guarantee you'll learn something new!

Computer Creations Want to be faster than your class mates on how to create, design, edit, draw, and program on a computer? This is the class for you! This class will teach you how to design a website, how to use Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Paint, and a number of other fun programs. There will be group and individual projects, such as presentations and graphic art projects. You will learn how to type faster and find fun stuff online with an online scavenger hunt. You will also be able to draw in 3D using Paint or other graphic design programs. You could also be able to design

Cheerleading Camp You will cheer your team to victory after learning all about cheerleading! We will start with stretches, learn facial expressions, voice readiness, simple formations, jumps, dance movements, and cheers! Improve coordination and listening skills, and learn to work together. Reading A to Z

Learn the tricks of making reading easier to understand! Get tips and information

on how to improve as a reader and a student. This Youth College event will help

you “crack the code” of effective reading to help you start your school year off

right!

Hands on Science When you learn Hands on Science, you will study many topics with fun, hands-on

experiments. Join the fun in the exploration of the wonders of science. In this

course students will learn about geology, biology,

Zumba

Zumba is a fitness program inspired by Latin dance. Zumba combines rhythms from Latin, country, hip-hop, and modern day music to create an aerobic routine that is fun and easy to follow.

Yummy!

Young Chefs

Cooking will follow a child all the way to their adult lives. Cooking can help rein-force the fundamentals of math, science, reading and art, just to name a few.

Your child will receive a cookbook (one per family). Extra cookbooks can be ordered for an additional fee of $10.00. Pre-cooking class will receive recipes.

A Stove and Microwave Oven will be used.

Children with food allergies are advised not to take this course.

Cooking classes for grades 4-8. Space is limited!

Enroll in 1, 2, 3, or all 4.

Pre-Cooking for Grades 1-3 Breakfast 8:15 a.m. - 9:15 a.m. Traditional breakfast cooking: biscuits and gravy, pancakes, omelets, etc. Brunch 9:15 a.m. - 10:15 a.m. For those times later in the morning and a change of pace, we will be cooking dishes such as: breakfast pizza, bacon and cheddar biscuits, breakfast tacos, etc. Lunch 11:00 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. Quick and easy lunch or dinner entrees, such as: enchiladas, lasagna, etc. Appetizers and Desserts 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Quick put together appetizers such as: guacamole, salsa and chips, cheese ball and crackers, kabobs, pinwheels, etc. Desserts will include no bake turtle cheese cake, earthquake cake, etc. $40.00 per cooking class ($25.00 per class plus a $15.00 Supply Fee per class)

Pre-Cooking Grades 1-3 10:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. $30.00 Precooking is designed to introduce 1-3 graders to the joys of cooking. They will be introduced to the kitchen, recipes, measuring, and how to make easy snacks. We will be preparing items such as Ants on a Log, Fruit Ka-bobs, and a Jell-O Fruit Salad.

Fees and Policies Fee Schedule: $25.00 per class. Some classes will have a

supply fee. All classes are offered in June and July unless otherwise stated.

What not to bring: Please do not bring games, toys, trading

cards, electronic devices and other similar materials to classes unless the instructor has requested you to do so. NMJC is not responsible for lost, broken, or missing items.

Children with special concerns: If your child has special

needs or requires medication during this event, please contact us before enrolling. This will ensure that we can address all concerns.

Drop-off/Pick up: Parents/Guardians will be responsible for both

dropping off and picking up their registered students. Students will be immediately picked up by their parent/legal guardian at the end of each registered class.

Conduct: Our purpose is to provide an enrichment program.

Proper standards of conduct are necessary to protect the health, safety, and well being of all Youth College students. Behavior that might interfere with the educational process will be unacceptable. Students will be careful with college equipment, property, and the property of other students. Safety is our first responsibility. Students are not allowed to go anywhere on campus without the company of a staff member. Parents will be contacted if their child is involved in any unacceptable situations. Students should dress in casual/play clothes. Tennis shoes are encouraged. Staff members have the right to exclude any student from activities due to the failure or inability to follow any and all of the listed policies.
