About UsNew Mexico State University Carlsbad Community Education serves as the center for lifelong learning by providing educational training and personal enrichment opportunities for businesses and students of all ages. Community Education plays a major role in community service and outreach for NMSU Carlsbad. Enjoy short-term, non-credit classes designed to develop new skills and interests. Refund PolicyYour payment, minus a $10.00 cancellation fee, will be refunded if you provide a request to cancel in person, via phone, or email five business days prior to the first day of class. Refund requests can be made directly to the Community Education office or sent to [email protected]. Refunds may take up to 30 days to be processed. If a student cannot attend, a substitute may be appointed. A full (100%) refund will be given only for classes that are cancelled by NMSU Carlsbad Community Education. Please note that refunds cannot be issued for online courses through Ed2Go or Gatlin. This policy applies to all registrations, regardless of payment method.

Clay Projects with KidsAges 8 - 10Kids will follow step-by-step tips to create a functional or decorative pottery for daily use. “Hand building” is working with clay by hand using only simple tools, not the pottery wheel. Before potters had the wheel, they were creating beautiful pots and clay forms with their hands and fingers, and basic hand tools. The three most common forms of creating hand built pots: pinch pot, coiling and slab techniques. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone Play, Ages 8 - 15Do You Want to Be a Star in a Harry Potter Play? Harry attempts to stop Voldemort, who killed Harry’s parents, from stealing the Sorcerer’s Stone. The magic of Harry Potter and his fantastic adventures will return to the stage in Room 153 at NMSU Carlsbad. We will dramatize five key scenes from the book “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”. Children are not required to read: lines from the play will be learned and memorized. The Instructor provides props and costumes. Note: The play will be performed for parents as well as the public on Thursday, July 18, at 7:00 p.m. in Room 153. Fundamentals of Art, Ages 6 - 15Students will learn the elements of art, and different mediums of art. Learning the Elements: Have you ever looked at an artwork and wondered how the artist decided to begin

making it? All art, whether two-dimensional like a painting or three-dimensional like a sculpture, contains one or more of the seven elements of art. These elements are: Line, Color, Shape, Form, Value, Space, and Texture. They are the basic building blocks of making art. Battle Royale: Make Your First Fortnite Style Video Game, Ages 8 – 11 & 11 - 14Fans of Fortnite we need you! Instead of playing the game, design your own. Using a professional 3D game development software, build levels and assets inspired by popular battle royale games like Fortnite. This course includes: cartoonish action and battle sequences. Make Your First Video Game! Ages 8 – 11 & 11 - 14If you love playing video games, this is the camp for you! Make your first

video game in this one-of-a-kind class that shows you the keys to designing your first 2D platformer game. Conceptualization, play experience, level design, graphics, sounds, and simple coding are just some of the concepts that we’ll explore. No prior experience necessary, just a desire to have fun. Student created games will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Games are only compatible on PC computers, Mac versions can be created after the program for $15.00 conversion fee. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Minecraft@ Modders Ages 8 – 11 & 11 - 14Use your favorite game to learn the basics of modding and foundations of programming. Learn scripting and logic statements as you create your first mods! Introductory coding will also be taught through a simulated environment inspired by Minecraft. Student projects will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. To access their project at home students must own a PC/MAC version of Minecraft. Tablet, phone, and game console versions of Minecraft are not compatible. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Instructor Robert Beck has been a professional in the music industry for over forty years. He has worked as a soloist, an ensemble performer, an agent and a contractor, and as a composer/arranger. His students have gone on to work in movies, TV, and on Broadway. Basic to Advanced VoiceAdults 18 & Up; Children 8 & UpThis course provides instruction in voice (singing) and focuses on vocal fundamentals, harmony, pitch, scales (major-minor), volume, vocal cord care, singing lead and harmony.

GuitarAdults 18 & Up; Children 8 & UpThis one-on-one course is designed to help new students get started and guitarists with some experience take their playing to the next level. The focus is on tempo, guitar timing, fret board, chord structure, and introductory theory (note reading).

Basic PianoAdults 18 & Up; Children 8 & UpThis course on the study and playing of the piano is customized to suit students with no prior piano instruction as well as those who are seeking to advance their skills. Focus is on keyboard fundamentals, chord structure, tempo, and introductory theory (note reading)

ROBLOX@MakersAges 8 – 11 & 11 - 14Unlock the power of ROBLOX@ Studio, the world creation tool used by real-world ROBLOX@ developers. Learn how to build 3D models and create an adventure in your ROBLOX@ world. Bring charactersto life with unique animations you design. Student-created projects will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. CSI – Crime Scene Investigation – The Case of the Lost Skull,Ages 7 – 12We will spend 5 days investigating and solving The Case of the Lost Skull. We will be analyzing fingerprints, blood, hair, fiber, and imprints. The students each will be given their own CSI Kit to keep at the end of the class. We will spend time also doing lots of other tests that a CSI Forensic Scientist might do! This will be a very hands-on class. Students will learn about investigation techniques that are used in real crime labs, including fingerprinting and chromatography. They will also apply these techniques to solve other small cases. Exploring Energy,Ages 7 – 12This class will be all about different types of energy. We will explore wind energy by building straw rockets, mechanical energy by using hand generators to light up light bulbs, solar energy by making solar robots and using solar powered cockroaches, kinetic energy by using Bottle Rockets, and many more. We will also make Mouse Trap Racers, use snap circuits, and use RC Rover Snap Circuit kits. Dinosaurs Ages 7 – 12This class will dig up an entire dinosaur and reconstruct it. We will use dinosaur skeletons to make clay dinosaurs. We will make a Dinosaur Fairy Garden, and they will use a Lego Creator Mighty Dinosaur Kit. The students will have several take home items including the clay dinosaurs, Dinosaur Fair Garden, and the Lego Dinosaur. We will be doing lots of other activities as well. The Ultimate Harry Potter Experience, Ages 8 – 12This class will take you into the Wizarding World of Harry Potter!! You will be sorted into the houses of: Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, Griffindor, and Slytherin. You will attend wizarding classes such as: Potions, Care of Magical Creatures, Charms, Divinations, and more! You will make your own wand and make a Book of Monsters Hidden Object Box. You will have lots of fun activities that transport you to this Magical World!
