The Kitchen Fire Suppression Systems are pre-engineered fixed nozzle systems for the protection of small
and large kitchens. Typical applications include hotels, restaurants, portable kitchens, trailer kitchens etc.
As restaurant fire protection systems have evolved, so have the kitchens they protect. The preparation of
low cholesterol and low fat foods requires the use of hotter-burning vegetable oils. Highly insulated, slow-
cooling appliances have also become more commonplace. As a result, fires in today's appliances are more
difficult to control and extinguish than in the past.
Today, there are different types of kitchen systems for different fire risks. These are based on water, foam,
dry chemical or special wet chemical agents. The agents offer different firefighting capabilities, and these
need to be matched to the fuel risks they are protecting.

The failure of kitchen fire suppression equipment is costly and embarrassing. The kitchen hood fire

Gaseous fire suppression systems are used for the protection of highly valued hazards that require a
clean agent that does not damage the contents or leave a residue. Typical applications include:

Different gaseous agents are available for different types of risks. Some gases, such as Inergen®, offer a
lower cost of gas and safety to the occupants, while others such as CO2 are commonly found in industrial
and marine applications. Chemical agents as in Sapphire, FM-200 are also available which use less storage
space, but require careful safety systems.
The risks that are normally protected by gas fire suppression systems are often highly valuable and
important. Therefore it is important the gas fire suppression systems that are installed are checked and
maintained regularly. They are specialized systems for specialized local risks and need to be ready to
perform at any time. To ensure that the system is ready to operate in a fire, the FTECH Enterprises professional inspection and service engineers will perform a thorough service check to make sure it is properly installed and will function as intended.

Fire detection and alarm systems are installed to protect your personnel from the risk of flame,
smoke and toxic byproducts. They use specialized sensors to monitor risks for the early stages of a fire. The
types of sensors used will vary for different risks due to the different fire products produced from different
burning fuels. Once detected the system will sound audible alarms, alerting the occupants of the building,
and possibly even activate a voice evacuation system, as well as sending a signal to the authorities.
Fire detection and alarm systems can vary from the simplest detector and siren to complex
interactive systems that automatically control the staged egress of large buildings, moving people away
from the source and path of fire, as well as ensuring the proper activation of smoke control and fire systems.

Portable Fire extinguishers offer quick and effective fire fighting response
to small fires. They are usually considered as the first line of defense against small
fires, before they grow to become a risk to your buildings and other occupants.
Portable fire extinguishers need to be easy to use and selected for the right type of
fuel.
Placement and identification of fire extinguishers is critical to the safety of the
occupants, and important to meeting the relevant codes and standards. Ftech's professionally trained
extinguisher service staff will ensure that the best choices of extinguishers with the proper agents are
located at the correct locations, with the appropriate signs and identification.
Having your staff properly trained in the use of fire extinguishers can be the difference between a minor
interruption and a complete shutdown of your business, or worse, the cause of death. Our trained
professional will conduct training courses to show how to identify and select the right extinguisher and how
to use them in a fire.
Fire extinguishers need to work when called upon to do so. It is important that they are regularly inspected
and checked for signs of damage, leakage or corrosion, and that the appropriate corrective action is taken to
put them back in service quickly. Ftech's staff of trained service technicians will perform an extensive
service check on a regular basis to ensure they are in full working order.
What types of extinguishers are available?
Portable fire extinguishers are usually classified according to the agent’s type they contain.
Water
Uses on ordinary solid combustible materials (Class A). Water is readily available. These extinguishers are
cheap and easily refilled. They are used for their cooling and wetting action.

Foam
Used on class B oil fires. The foam discharge forms a blanket to cover the surface, which remains in place
for sufficient time to prevent re-ignition and allow the liquid to cool.
Dry Chemical
Used on class A and B fires. Fast acting and offers quick extinguishment. The powder quickly disperses to
all areas in the risk and acts on the flames over the fuel. They are more effective on fuel fires than other
extinguishers.
Carbon Dioxide
These are used primarily for oil and electrical fires. Although a gas, it is discharged partly as a liquid stream
allowing it to be directed over a fuel surface. CO2 is toxic and should not be used in small confined spaces.
Halocarbons
These are used mainly on electrical risks, however they can also be used on class A and B fires. As they do
not leave any residue, this favored in computer rooms and electrical risks.
There are different types of foam, dry chemical and halocarbon agents for specific types of fuel hazards.
The extinguishers also come in different sizes although the most useful sizes contain between 3 to 9kg.
How to Use Extinguishers
It is important that operators are trained to use extinguishers when there is a fire space. As part of this
training, they need to understand the different methods for different agents.
A. WATER - Direct the jet at the base of the fire and keep it moving over the fire source.
B. FOAM - Direct to far inside edge of container and allow foam blanket to cover the fuel surface. If
not possible, direct the jet from a safe distance allowing the foam to gently cover the surface. Do not direct
the jet directly into the fuel surface.
C. DRY POWDER - If fighting a liquid spill then directs at near edge of spill and use a rapid sweeping
action to move the flames to the far edge until extinguished. If fighting an electrical hazard, ensure the
powder is able to enter all parts of the hazard.
D. CARBON DIOXIDE - Direct the stream over the fuel surface. Since the liquid will vapourise
quickly, do not stand too far away from the risk. If fighting an electrical hazard, ensure the gas is able to
enter all parts of the hazard.

Door Fan ensures passage of discharge tests
Prior to 1989 several progressive installers found a unique way to ensure that they would always
pass the discharge test. They used a fan mounted in a doorway to create a pressure which allowed them to
locate hidden leaks using chemical smoke. When the leaks were sealed, the room would always pass the
discharge test. It worked so well that the discharge test has now been replaced by the door fan test.

Now, both NFPA 2001 and 12A require an enclosure integrity test (section 4-7.2.3) as part of the
acceptance procedure for all clean agent systems. This includes halocarbon and inert agents. The
comprehensive test and calculation procedure predicts how long the agent would stay in the room if it were
ever discharged. In the past, enclosures were often designed merely to pass the discharge test. This often
left rooms with fire barriers on only 5 sides with the top completely open - often only ceiling tiles stood
between the protected enclosure and an adjacent unprotected area. Smoke or fire could readily enter from
above. The discharge test only verified agent distribution in one location, usually the most favorable.

This may have led to assuming that other approval steps could be overlooked. To make matters worse, the
discharge test was never repeated. The room leakage would increase steadily, compromising the system
from day one.
Now, the EPA, IRI, FM, other insurers, Fire suppression equipment manufacturers, and the FSSA all
encourage door fan tests on every installation. Door Fan tests should be repeated annually or whenever
extra holes are made in the enclosure.

from you, standards established for your business, and the hazards that relate to it. The principles of our
partnership are based on us meeting all the terms and conditions of this proposal to provide you with the
safest possible facility for your customers and employees.
1. Equipment identified during our normal service but not specified (i.e. extra detection, additional
sprinkler system) will be inspected at regular intervals and may be subjected to additional pricing.
2. Clear unconditional access of all devices in a normal work environment must be reasonably
provided by you. Inspection rates will be charged accordingly.
3. Sensitivity and calibration tests not included in this proposal unless otherwise specified.
4. Fusible link testing for fire alarm systems not included (i.e. doors, windows) as well as electrical and
mechanical dampers.
5. You are responsible for providing panel access and all access codes and keys. Equipment not in
normal operating condition may be subjected to additional charges.
6. Permits, registration, and shutdown fees subject to accommodate local codes are subject to
additional charges.
7. Equipment failure caused due to normal wear and tear, acts of God, vandalism or obsolescence
while in the process of following our inspection techniques are not the responsibility of Ftech Enterprises.
8. Environmental issues are not included and will be quoted or performed at attached hourly rate and
associated cost.
9. All service and maintenance work is subjected to our normal Terms and Conditions.
