I know the weather will eventually turn and I'm trying hard not to be impatient but last month's weather was so tantalizing. Adrien, our 13 year old granddaughter and her brother Gavin from Newmarket are spending March break with us and despite the lack of good syrup making weather, we have been having great fun, building forts, watching movies and drinking lots of hot chocolate (with marshmallows, of course!) Adrien has picked out a pattern and fabric for a new quilt for her bed and we have begun to work on it together. The pattern is geometric and colourful and I am so impressed with the accuracy of the seams that both the kids can sew. Maybe all the video games they play serve some purpose?? We have an exciting month ahead for Guild members. The meeting on the 21st will be at a new location, St Paul's United Church in Walkerton. Our speaker will be Celeste Compion from Meerkat Trading. Celeste sells Shweshwe fabrics from South Africa and will talk to us about the fabric as well as having some for sell. The fabrics are beautiful and unique. Some of us will be taking the class at Knox Presbyterian Church the next day using the Hex N More Ruler. Lots of fun ahead! Hope you are all managing to stay warm. See you on March 21st. CHALLENGES At the beginning of the year, we talked about using scraps, we had some sample ideas of items made completely from scraps, both small and large - placemats to queen size quilts. In September 2016 we had 16 members sign up to participate. We also had 12-14 block patterns from Quilts of Valour with copies of those blocks being provided to those who requested them. In January 2017, we provided all the members with a pattern for a mystery table runner "Canada Eh?" (don't forget this project can be entered in the contest as set out on the face of the pattern), placemat pattern, and wall hanging pattern (origin Quilts of Valour). This is a big birthday for Canada, 150 years, we hope everyone has completed something or is working on something from Canada fabric for yourself. Any item or pattern you choose will look great. Three of the Quilts of Valour blocks would make a great table runner or wall hanging. At our JUNE meeting, we want to see your scrap challenge projects AND your Canada project (completed or not). This is being scheduled for JUNE. This will be a viewers' choice, with gifts for the winners. Our June meeting will be an outdoor bbq. The venue is booked. It has a pavilion, closed in with tables. There is no speaker scheduled so this gives us lots of time to admire the finished or work in progress creations. Put this date on your calendar - June 20, - come out and enjoy the bbq, fresh air, social time and be sure to bring your projects.
