New Orleans Recycling Guide
Updated December 2020 by Sara Good‐Chanmugam, Tulane University, based on the 2018 update by Dayna Kern and guides produced by earlier Tulane Public Service interns. Materials accepted by Orleans & Jefferson Parish programs updated December 2020 Please send updates and suggestions to [email protected] This guide provides information for area residents on how to recycle or donate many different items and materials. It does not include information on commercial recycling services that can be procured by area businesses, large organizations, and institutions such as schools.

Curbside Recycling
City of New Orleans The City of New Orleans offers free weekly curbside recycling to properties that are eligible for the collection of solid waste by the City. If you have curbside trash pickup, you can also have curbside recycling pickup service. Eligible properties include those with four units or less, which generate less than 95 gallons of solid waste at each routine collection (outside the French Quarter & Downtown Development District) or less than 35 gallons of solid waste at each routine collection (within the French Quarter & DDD). Hotels, restaurants, and bars are not eligible for City sanitation services.
Registration ‐‐ Residents of Orleans Parish can call 311 or visit https://nola311.org/service‐request/, to register for the curbside recycling program and receive a free, 64 gallon, wheeled cart with a lid (outside of the FQ/DDD) or an 18 gallon blue bin (inside the FQ/DDD).
Items that can be recycled curbside:
Paper (newspaper, magazines, junk mail, office paper, phone books, envelopes, catalogs)
Plastics #1 (soda/water bottles) and #2 (milk/juice/shampoo/detergent containers) Metal cans (aluminum, steel, tin, small metal cans, clean aluminum foil) Cardboard (clean, no pizza boxes) Paperboard/boxboard (such as cereal boxes, cracker boxes, toothpaste boxes)
IMPORTANT NOTE: As of May 18, 2019, the curbside recycling program does not accept Plastics #3‐7 and Waxboard (juice boxes, milk cartons)

Jefferson Parish Garbage collection services are provided to residences and small businesses with active water meters that are being billed for garbage collection. Household recyclables such as paper and plastic are collected once per week. All items must be placed inside the 18 gallon cart provided by the Parish.
Items that can be recycled curbside include:

Drop Off Services for General Recyclables City of New Orleans Department of Sanitation The Department of Sanitation offers a twice monthly recycling drop‐off at the Recycling Drop‐Off Center at 2829 Elysian Fields Avenue on the second and fourth Saturday of every month from 8:00am until 1:00pm for New Orleans Parish residents.
The Recycling Drop‐Off accepts general materials accepted by the City’s curbside recycling service, such as paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, and metal cans. It also accepts special materials such as electronics, batteries, glass, and tires. See the website for up‐to‐date lists of accepted materials. The Recycling Drop‐Off also has special “Shred Days, where citizens can shred personal and/or sensitive paper goods, in partnership with Iron Mountain, and hosts the Annual Household Hazardous Materials Collection Day.

St. John Parish Recycling
St. John Parish only offers drop‐off recycling services, at the Parish Recycle Yard and other specified locations around St. John Parish. Drop‐off locations are listed on website below. The Parish Recycle Yard, 1801 W. Airline Hwy, Laplace LA is also open Monday‐Friday 7am‐5pm, and Saturday 7‐3pm. Items accepted:
Paper (magazines, newspapers, paper bags, shredded paper)
Cardboard (cereal boxes, corrugated cardboard with no grease or packaging materials)
Plastic bottles and jugs
Aluminum and metal cans.

Best Buy Participating Best Buys recycle many electronics for free, and can pick up and recycle others for a fee. Target Target stores have a guest recycling station located in the front of each store. The station
is available for bottle and can recycling (aluminum, glass and plastic beverage containers),
plastic film (high and low density such as plastic bags and bubble wrap), and small device
electronics recycling (think MP3 players, GPS devices and ink cartridges).
