Ford Kuga, 2013- F165, F165S, F165Q & F165QF

The 2013 Ford Kuga is an all-new version of Ford's SUV, and the latest model in the company's line-up to go global; it will be sold in Europe, Asia and North America in pretty much the same form. It has been re-engineered from the ground up, and is both longer and roomier inside than the model it replaces. A new towbar has had to be introduced and is now in stock.

Remove the bumper and inner beam. The side arms are inserted into the chassis apertures and secured with two horizontal fasteners either side. The towbar mainframe is fastened between the side arms and the chosen neck kit installed. A small bumper cut is required for fixed towbars, a larger cut will be necessary to facilitate a flip electric plate on detachable variants.

Honda CR-V (Mk4), December 2012- HN69, HN69S, HN69Q & HN69QF

The latest incarnation of the popular Honda CR-V is the fourth generation to be sold in the UK. The Swindon built urban off roader is styled in a similar vein to the latest Civic model, thankfully the distinct angular rear light units make it easier to differentiate from the previous model. The CR-V has Honda’s ASC system (Advanced Stability Control) that can prevent towed trailers from weaving behind the car. Honda's Collision Mitigation Braking System is also included. It monitors the distance of the car in front and prepares the CR-V for impact if it senses a collision. Safety features such as this are now common place on many modern vehicles, careful consideration must be given to the towbar installation, your customer must be offered the correct towbar system that will not inhibit any safety features the manufacturer provides.

Once the bumper, undertray and inner beam have been removed the installation is relatively simple and similar to previous CR-V models. The exhaust is lowered and the side arms are fastened to the undersides of the chassis. The main cross tube is fastened to each side arm through the rear panel and then centrally to the rear towing eye. The appropriate neck can then be installed before finally tightening the entire assembly. There is no bumper cut as such however the under tray will need to be cut to suit the chosen neck system and electric attachment.

KIA Sorento 4, November 2012- KA38

At first glance it is difficult to differentiate between early and later Sorento models, thankfuly the latest version, the Sorento 4 has easily recognisable vertical fog lamps in the front and rear bumpers. Larger than previous models, again the new Sorento shares its underpinnings with the latest Santa-Fe and the combined effort and integration shows with much more refinement than previous models. Prices have inevitabley increased with this new model, that said it is still one of the best value 4x4s on the market if you calculate the pulling power per pound, £24,495 gets you a 7 seat luxury 4x4 with a 2,500kg towing capacity and 7 year warranty.

The design engineers at Witter have developed a towbar for the latest KIA Sorento that can be installed without the need to remove the bumper or cut into it. Once the spare wheel has been lowered, the side arms are mounted vertically to each chassis rail. The one piece towbar mainframe is then attached to the side arms and further mounted to the chassis horizontally. The towbar must then be positioned as far up and rearward as possible before being tightened, this allows maximum clearance when replacing the spare wheel. Due to the limited space behind the bumper a separate detachable towbar will be available soon. Unlike with other towbars that are manufactured for the Sorento, when you fit Witter you do not have to remove or cut the bumper, this considerably reduces fitting time and makes the Witter towbar more appealing to the end user.

Mitsubishi Outlander III, February 2013- CL114 CL114S CL114Q CL114QF

The third generation Mitsubishi Outlander heralds the new face of Mitsubishi, expect to see similar styling on new and existing models over the coming months. Initially available in the UK in diesel 4x4 only, Mitsubishi intend to lauch a Hybrid model later next year that will produce some of the lowest emmisions in its class. That said the diesel that comes as standard for the introduction is much refined when compared to its predecessor, quieter, more efficient and less emmisions will make the all new Outlander a popular choice for those in the market for a capable mid sized yet frugal 4x4.

Fitment requires the removal of the rear bumper and the lowering of the spare wheel. The side arms are attached to the chassis mainframe with support brackets onto the rear panel. As with previous Outlander models space around the spare wheel is at a premium, it is necessary to raise the spare before positioning and tightening the towbar to ensure sufficient clearance between the towbar mainframe and the spare.

Mini Countryman, August 2010- BM39Q

The Mini Countryman has been sold in the UK for over two years. In that time, demand for the vehicle appeared to be low, a recent facelift however has seen sales increase and a demand for a towbar. In our experience the majority of models come with a prewired towbar loom and socket and many come from factory with a complete towbar. The design engineers have developed a swan neck detachable towbar that will allow the refitment of the towing socket on a flip down plate above the existing hole in the rear bumper. NOTE: Due to the low rear number pate and bumper profile we are only able to offer a swan neck detachable towbar.

Installation of BM39Q is consistent with many modern BMW vehicles. Removal of the bumper and inner beam is required. The one piece towbar mainframe is then fastened directly to the vehicle’s rear panel. An aperture in the centre of the bumper has to be made to facilitate the neck system. NOTE: Of the later vehicles we have seen during the development of the towbar, all came with a towing socket located in the bumper through the existing aperture to left of centre.

Vauxhall Mokka, December 2012- G120, G120S, G120Q & G120QF

It appears Vauxhall are wanting a slice of the lucrative ‘fashionable’ car market. The recently introduced Adam, a funky little city car and the stylish Astra GTC are evidence to the fact. The Mokka is no exception, a chunky fun looking mini SUV, the Mokka will certainly hold its own in this sector. The stylish Cascada set to be released for the summer can only strentghen Vauhxall’s position as a manufacturer for the young and trendy and establish detachment from its somewhat dull family mans brand image it had in the past.

The rear lights, bumper and inner beam have to be removed first. The side arms are inserted into the chassis apertures and fastened to the rear panel and from below in the current conventional Vauxhall style. The mainframe assembly is then mounted between the side arms, the neck assembly and appropriate electric plate installed between the drop profiles and the entire assembly tightened. The rear bumper has a lower removable section that can be either left off or cut to suit the chosen towbar style.

Volvo V40, September 2012- VL51, VL51S ,VL51Q & VL51QF

Despite the name ‘V40’ the latest Volvo is a far cry from the V40 made by Mitsubishi and further still from the 440, 360 and 340 made by DAF. Build quality, safety features, conventional cabin layout and modern styling are intended to take on the likes of the A3, Golf and 1 Series for a lucrative share of the ‘compact premium’ fleet market. With the current financial climate seeing fleet users opt for smaller and lower taxation class models this maybe the most important car Volvo has produced as the Swedish car maker attempts to tip the fiscal scale back to black.

Upon removal of the bumper and inner beam the one piece towbar mainframe is inserted into the chassis apertures and secured with two horizontal fasteners either side. The inner beam can then be refitted over the towbar and the chosen neck kit installed. A small bumper cut is required for fixed towbars, a larger cut will be necessary to facilitate a flip electric plate on detachable variants.

New Type

When looking at application dates within the legislation there will be a reference to 'New Types'. After this date, vehicles of a 'New Type' will be required to meet the legislation in question. A 'New Type' is a vehicle that differs in certain essential respects to a type previously approved or on sale in any market.

Existing Type

As above. An 'Existing Type' is a vehicle of a type already in existence (whether approved or not).

Complete Vehicle

Means any vehicle which has been built in one stage by one manufacturer, for example a panel van.

Incomplete Vehicle

Completed Vehicle

Is a vehicle that has been built and finished in more than one stage, normally by two or more different manufacturers. For example, a concrete mixer where a company has added the additional components (i.e. the mixer itself) to a cab chassis and the vehicle requires no further work before it can be considered finished.

Special-purpose Vehicle

Means a vehicle intended to perform a function which requires special body arrangements and/or equipment, such as a recovery vehicle, and ambulance or a wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV).
