BREAKING THE CYCLE OF POVERTY THROUGH EDUCATION
IN THIS ISSUE
…and most pupils settled into their classes
on July 15th
. For the majority of schools in Indonesia, children who progress to the first grade of junior and senior high school have
to transfer to a different school. On transfer, they are charged an enrolment fee. This fee
usually covers the school application fee, new uniforms and maintenance for building and school facilities.
As we all understand, disadvantaged families
almost always have difficulties in providing sufficient funding for their children to go to
school. For those families that have a child entering grade 7 or 10 they will reconsider sending their children to school. This is
where external support is needed the most to prevent these children from dropping out of school.
YKIP Aims
…to continue the educational support to:
43 students from Bali bomb victims’ families through the KIDS Scholarship Program;
570 students from disadvantaged families ranging from elementary to senior high
school level, across 4 regencies in Bali through the KEMBALI Scholarship Program;
6 students attending a one-year vocational training course through the Vocational
Scholarship Program; and 5 students attending university through the
University Scholarship Program.
YKIP Continues
…to appeal for more support. Although the
new academic year has already started and the first quarter distribution of school
supplies and education cash assistance has
already taken place; 48 students are still looking for sponsors to help support their
education. YKIP wants to ensure these students continue their education and we appeal for your hel p to make that happen.

YKIP NEWSLETTER | Vol.III September 2013 2
The first day of school commenced mid-July.
Thank you to all our supporters. This academic year of 2013/2014, YKIP are able to
help 570 students!
Since the first week of August, YKIP started distributing the cash assistance to help the children in need pay their school fees.
On the 18th of August, KEMBALI’s 1st
Quarter Distribution in the Gianyar district was officially opened by the District Head of Gianyar. This also coincided with our
celebration of Indonesian Independence Day.
In Karangasem, the District Head showed support by providing school supplies to three students four days prior to our distribution event. In total KEMBALI distributed school supplies and cash assistance to 140 students
from the Karangasem area.
The manner in which our distribution days
were carried out in Gianyar and Karangasem showed that the KEMBALI Scholarship Program actively encourages the involvement of as many stakeholders as
possible, allowing monitoring of the program’s implementation and its transparency. Both District Heads
acknowledged the benefits of our KEMBALI Program and agreed to continue their full
support of our program’s implementation.
In summary, school supplies, uniforms and cash assistance to
support the KEMBALI students have been
distributed to all 570 students
across four regencies in Bali over a two week period
from August 18th to 31st.
UPCOMING EVENT
KEMBALI 2nd Quarter Distribution is scheduled to commence the 2nd week of October 2013.

CAREE R DAY E VE NT [email protected]
My name is Aryawati. I have been selected as
one of YKIP Scholar-ship recipients in April 2013 to improve my
skills through a one-year training program
at Elizabeth School.
I have been trained in International Room Division for 3 months now. I have never been as excited as I am now because I learn a lot of new skills which I never learned before when I was in high school. My training instructor once told me that skill which I
learned from high school is not enough to meet the high demand of quality skills
needed in the hospitality industry.
I am so glad that I have a chance to improve my skills as it has been my dream since my
childhood days to work in a hotel . YKIP also
never stop encouraging me whenever I have to deal with difficulties and challenge during my training. They said that if I have a passion on what I do and believe more on what I am capable of doing, nothing is impossible. I am starting to believe it’s true…
Each of us has the right to dream of our
future from the moment we are born. However, for some dreams are never fulfilled due to their socio-economic situation.
Accomplishment of Our 2012 Program
Some of you might remember the story about Ketut who dared to dream. (His story was published in our previous newsletter.) Ketut, as a young boy from Sukawati almost ended up selling bird cages rather than pursuing his dream to work in a hotel. He didn’t possess the skills required to enter the
hospitality industry. Luckily, Ketut was given the opportunity to pursue his dream through a one-year hospitality
training program. It wasn’t luck really. This
opportunity was only made possible by the
support from his generous donor. Ketut now has a stable job that he enjoys at one of the
resorts in Ubud. Many thanks to his generous sponsor, Martha. Ketut has finally fulfilled his dream.
2013 Program
Following on from Ketut’s success, this year YKIP is able to support another 6 KEMBALI graduates to attend a one-year vocational training program. With the support of the Inspirasia Foundation, these y oung people are now students in the following courses:
3 attending International Food Production
1 attending International Room Division 2 attending Computerized Accounting
Also this year, YKIP has teamed together with the Bali WISE Foundation to recruit
female graduates from the KEMBALI program. These graduates are now
attending a 6 month hospitality training program. Three young ladies have
completed three months training and YKIP looks forward to more KEMBALI graduates joining this program in the future.

Freshman Girls of 2013!
Tiya and Darmani are two of our KEMBALI graduates from last year. T hey were both selected to receive a YKIP scholarship to obtain a degree at university.
They are two of our best graduates and were
selected to receive the scholarship based on the criteria of academic achievement and economic circumstances. Both of them were
accepted into state universities in Bali and their classes began mid-August.
Tiya is studying Management (4 year
Bachelor program in Faculty of Economy) at the University of Udayana. While, Darmani is studying Accounting ( 3 year Diploma
program) at Bali State Polytechnic.
Congratulations Tiya and Darmani and we wish them every success for their futures. ”Break a leg, Tiya and Darmani and go get those degrees!”
More Graduates!
YKIP proudly acknowledges the
efforts of our two outstanding graduates Purniti and Agung, who
have successfully completed their university
studies, supported by our University Scholarship Program. Now YKIP has had four graduates already in the last four years!
Purniti, the Midwife
It was in 2007, two years after Purniti lost her
father when she became one of our KEMBALI students. She was in grade 10 when she commenced her YKIP scholarship. After Purniti’s father died in an accident, the family’s only income was the profit her mother made selling snacks at a traditional market in Sukawati. Purniti still
remembers her exact feeling when she received the news that she was able to complete her schooling. She knew then she
would be able to fulfil her dream and become someone who works in the health sector.
When YKIP managed to find her a sponsor for her higher education, Purniti decided to
become a midwife. She thought by becoming a midwife she would be able to help others who need her expertise and take care of her family at the same time. Her
striving for her dream and success has brought her to a happy place. In early September 2013, she received her Diploma in
Midwifery.
Congratulations Purniti!
Agung, Bachelor in Teaching
Agung commenced his YKIP scholarship as a KEMBALI student when he was in grade 9 in 2005. He was always one of KEMBALI best
students.
In 2009, the Annika Linden Foundation (the former name of the Inspirasia Foundation)
agreed to sponsor Agung to continue his study at university. He attended IKIP Saraswati to study his teaching degree,
majoring in Indonesian Language and Arts. You can see by his photograph how proud he is with his Bachel or degree in Teaching.
Congratulation to you too Agung!

Janeal and Aaron came to visit Kadek in
June. Kadek and her family were so happy, especially when Janeal gave a surprise gift for Kadek, a lovely dress which will look so
pretty on her. She has grown into a lovely teenager and is now in the 8th grade. Janeal
and Kadek took this opportunity to share each other’s passions and dreams. Janeal shared with Kadek that every person in this world has experienced hard times in their life, including herself. She also shared with Kadek whenever she felt helpless; she thinks about something good which helps her stay
positive and steers her away from losing hope. Janeal suggested to Kadek that she try
this technique whenever she experiences a situation where she feels helpless. “Never give up hope” is the motto. Janeal then
spontaneously gave Kadek her fan that she had with her that day and told Kadek to keep the fan for her and use it whenever she feels sad and helpless, and this will remind Kadek about the conversation they both had that
day.
Thank you, Janeal. It is a lovely thought of yours, putting your love in the heart of Kadek and encouraging her to grow her strength
from within herself.

Susan and Peter fly to Bali for their
annual Law on the Lounge event every year.
This year, YKIP were honoured to receive an invitation from them to introduce our YKIP program to all attending their event. Susan and Peter’s support on our YKIP program is
indisputable. They both helped YKIP raise funds to hel p more KEMBALI students on
this occasion as well as many others. Thank you, Susan and Peter, for y our true generosity and we also thank all the 2013
Law on the Lounge delegates who generously reached into their pockets to
support our YKIP program. Till we meet again in 2014.

Damien and his friends came to visit
their V.O.W. sponsored children in Seraya
Barat. They brought many goody bags
containing milk and a variety of food to be
given to the children sponsored by V.O.W.
Besides the gifts, the thing that the children
loved most during Damien and his friends’
visit was the opportunity to show their dance
performance. The children were so happy
after the performance. They were so proud
of themselves and happy to be able to
entertain Damian and his friends.
Thank you, Damien. Especially for helping us
fundraise for the children at the 2013 West
Coast Property Training.

Kadek Jensen came to visit Ni Luh during
her annual visit to Bali. This time, she
brought along pictures from her visit when
Luh was still at elementary school. It is hard
to believe how time goes by so quickly. Now
the little girl with two long braids in the
picture is already in her final year at junior
high school. Thank you for your support, Ibu
Kadek. Till we meet again in Bali!!

Carolyn and Radi visited three of their
sponsored children. Being able to speak a
little Bahasa, they attempted to
communicate directly with the children,
which was very interesting and fun!!
They also brought a drawing set for the
children and in return, the children made a
special drawing just for them; a beautiful
batik pattern and Bali native flower:
Frangipani, which is Carolyn’s favourite
flower.
Thank you Carolyn and Radi, we look forward
to your next visit!!

Karen and Joshua, along with their Offerings
team visited Bali in June. They held a terrific soccer practice for more than 20 children from YKIP. It was a rare opportunity for these
YKIP children to practice soccer with a real coach like Joshua.
Soccer is a perfect way for children to keep highly motivated and confident in improving their teamwork and social skills. It’s a sport that enables people to encompass all, cross-culturally, cross-generationally and, most of all, gender-neutral. A number of girls were
also encouraged to play. By lowering the barrier of entry for them to play along with the boys, the girls were given the confidence
to step inside the field and make their kicks. It worked perfectly! The girls benefited a lot
from their first time experience engaged in a dynamic and fun way!
Huge thanks to Offerings! That day, on Sunday afternoon the June 30th, the
Offerings team made the children’s’ day even more perfect by providing each one of them with a soccer ball and Offerings T-Shirt to take home and a big smile from a mouth full of ice cream! Offerings! You Came! You Coached! And You
Taught Us to Kick for Changes!

This year’s KIDS Gathering Party celebration was held on the sunny Saturday of the 29
th June at Taman Gong Perdamaian, Desa
Budaya Kertalangu.
Like previous years, YKIP organized the Party to be held during school holidays so
everyone could attend and enjoy. This annual celebration helps to maintain the strong bond among these families and also gives
the opportunity to share with each other the progress that they’ve achieved in their lives.
But first and foremost, they were all there to have fun with their loved ones.
It was a full day event that was opened with a
speech from one of YKIP’s Board of Management, Djati Siahaan, thanking everyone for coming. He also shared a little
about the progress of the KIDS program that has been running for close to eleven years now and how the KIDS children were doing well at school.
For the whole day everyone was present at the event, the children, their families, and
the volunteers. We were all focused on the various activities that the YKIP team had prepared. There was singing, dancing, laughing out loud while playing outdoor games, competing in answering the trivia questions. All the activities were lots of fun!
“It was super fun!” said Christine, one of the volunteers. “Everyone is giving their best and more. I get to talk a lot with the children,
learn more about their dreams and plans for the future and really, seeing them smile
happily while playing makes me forget about everything but having fun.”
They played all day and took a break only for lunch and snacks but the games were not the only highlight of the day.
As our tradition requires, all the children
gathered together around a big delicious birthday cake to commence our unique
birthday celebration. This cake was generously donated to us by Ruth’s Desserts and was specially made for KIDS. What made
this celebration so unique was that no one cared that the celebration was not being held
on any body’s actual birthday. All that you could see was the children’s happy faces hovering around the cake. Everybody sang
birthday songs before they blew out all the candles together.
On this special occasion, the KIDS’ children
with outstanding achievements both in academic and non-academic fields received appreciation gifts from our sponsor, Rip Curl.
To help these KIDS children with their need of school supplies, YKIP also distributed packages full of books, stationery, shoes and school bags to all the KIDS children.
This event was held successfully with lots of support from helpful volunteers from Mitrais
and YKIP’s friends. Their support made the special day even more memorable!
Our huge thanks to our generous sponsors:
Rip Curl; for the best student prizes
Waterbom Bali; for the door prize tickets
Ruth's Desserts; for the delicious birthday cake

YKIP is extremely grateful for all of the support that the Inspirasia Foundation and PT. Mitrais
have given so we are able to deliver educational assistance to disadvantaged children.
The Inspirasia Foundation is a philanthropy

unschooled children. We believe in the power
of “What IF.”
The Inspirasia Foundation, established as the
Annika Linden Foundation in 2003, was
formed as a positive response to the tragic
2002 Bali terror bombing in Kuta, and as a
memorial to the spirit of the more than 200
innocent victims of that bomb, among them
a young Annika Linden. Today, the Inspirasia
Foundation supports 16 partners across Asia,
including in Bali.
2013 sees Mitrais entering its 11th year of
involvement in supporting YKIP activities.
Starting from 2002 when Mitrais staff were
involved in the Bali Bombings relief action to
more extended support up until today,
including the provision of office space,
accounting, IT, internet and other volunteer
services. Senior Mitrais employees are on the
YKIP management board, cementing an
already close bond between the two
organizations.
