WINTER STORMS CAUSE CRITICAL NEEDOur Midwestern winter weather is kicking us while we're down
This year’s icy weather has delivered a direct blow to the community blood supply. Due to winter weather alone, we've lost more than 600 units of blood.
Unsafe driving conditions have caused us to cancel multiple community blood drives and even close donor centers early. Now the community blood supply - from which we provide blood to our 120+ local hospital partners - is at dangerously low levels.
There's no substitute for blood and it cannot be artificially created. The only way to get that lifesaving link to our hospitals is by generous LifeServers rolling up their sleeves and donating. Though we may need to cancel a blood drive, hospital patients can't put their need for a blood transfusion on hold.
A single trauma victim can require 50 – 100 units of blood during an emergency. When you consider the fact that we are the sole provider of blood to more than 120 hospitals in Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota, our loss of 600+ donations is a huge, devastating problem.
We need your blood donation today! Each and every donation counts.
Please help us get the blood supply up to a stable level. For more information or to book your appointment, visit lifeservebloodcenter.org or call 800.287.4903.

In 2013 Justin was diagnosed with testicular cancer.
Strong chemotherapy wiped out his white blood cell and
hemoglobin counts. He credited a blood transfusion with
putting him back on his feet.
“That was very important, don’t get me wrong, but I wish
that was all I needed the service of donors for,” Justin said.
Although the source was gone, the cancer had spread to
a lymph node near his spine and aorta. Because the tumor
had to be chipped away from around the aorta, Justin lost
a considerable amount of blood. Seven units of blood were
immediately transfused to save his life. The surgeon, who
performed 150 of the same procedure every year, would
later tell Justin’s parents that was the second worst case
he’d ever seen.
“I can confidently say that were it not for the generosity
of those who are willing to take the time to give blood,
there is no way I would have gotten the chance to marry
my beautiful wife last year and be going on four years
cancer free this fall!”

Justin - A life saved
SHARE YOUR STORY!Has the need for blood impacted your life?Let us know!E-mail us at [email protected].
Legislative Breakfast LifeServe Blood Center hosted a special event at the Iowa State Capitol in January to urge
Iowa legislators to remove a sales tax on blood testing supplies that is negatively impacting our
organization. Thanks to the volunteers and blood transfusion recipients who were able to join us,
as well as those who have supported our advocacy efforts.
Call 800.287.4903 or visit lifeservebloodcenter.org for more information.
LOOKING AHEADDid you know that on average, our blood donors come in less than twice per year?
We appreciate all of our generous blood donors and would love to see you as often
as possible! Here’s how often you can come in to donate based on donation type:
Whole Blood – every 8 weeks Double Red Cell – every 16 weeks
Platelet – every 2 weeks, up to 24 times per yearPlasma – every 28 days
Not sure what donation type is best for your blood type? Give us a call and we
can let you know! After your donation, our staff can help you reschedule your next
appointment before leaving the blood drive!
ATTENTION LIFESERVERS!Would you or someone you know be willing to do some “road work?”
We’re seeking volunteer drivers to support our lifesaving work in the following areas: Ames, Cedar Falls, Des Moines, Mason City, Omaha and Sioux City. Just as our volunteer blood donors schedule donations for a time that works for them, volunteering to drive with LifeServe Blood Center allows you to select from several shifts per week for a time and day that works for you. Most of the opportunities are in the afternoons and evenings. If you have some time, enjoy driving around Iowa, Nebraska and/or South Dakota and have a passion for serving – contact our volunteer coordinator for more information!
Driving isn’t your thing? Perhaps your time and talents are more suited to helping at a blood drive or even hosting a blood drive in your community!
