General InformatIon
ROMERome (Roma in Italian) is the capital city of Italy. With 2.8 million residents in 496.3 square miles it is also the country’s largest and most populated city. Rome is located in the central-western portion of the Italian Peninsula, on the Tiber River within the Lazio region of Italy, and is frequently referred to as ‘The Eternal City’ by numerous ancient Roman poets and writers.
Rome’s history spans two and a half thousand years. It was the capital city of the Roman Kingdom, the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire for over seven hundred years, from the 1st century BC until the 7th century AD, and the city is regarded as one of the birthplaces of western civilization. Since the 1st century AD Rome has been the seat of the Papacy and, after the end of Byzantine domination in the 8th century it became the capital of the Papal States. In 1871 Rome became the capital of the Kingdom of Italy, and in 1946 that of the Italian Republic.
According to ancient legend, Romulus is credited with the founding of ancient
Rome in 753BC. As the story goes the twin brothers Romulus and Remus brought up by a she wolf on the Palatine Hill decided to found a city, but argued about where the site should be. To end the quarrel Romulus killed his brother Remus making himself the sole founder of the city, and therefore naming it after himself.
Rome today is one of the most important tourist destinations of the world, due to the abundance of archaeological and artistic treasures, as well as for the charm of its unique traditions, the beauty of its panoramic views, the majesty of its magnificent villas and, of course, its fantastic food.

USEFUL FACTS & CUSTOMSThe information here will give you some guidance on spending time in Rome. Another useful source will be your hotel’s concierge desk where you will find someone with an encyclopaedic knowledge of the city.

religion Rome has, for centuries, been an important worldwide centre for religion, particularly the Roman Catholic branch of Christianity. The city is commonly regarded as the ‘home of the Roman Catholic Church’, owing to the ecclesiastical doctrine of the primacy of the Bishop of Rome.
government Rome is the capital of Italy and is the seat of the Italian Government, a republic in which the president is chief of state who is elected by an electoral college for a seven-year term. The prime minister, who is head of government, is appointed by the president and confirmed by parliament. The bicameral Parlamento consists of a senate of 315 members, and the chamber of deputies of 630 members, both houses elected by popular vote to serve five-year terms.
CardsVisa and MasterCard are accepted by most shops and restaurants, though smaller merchants, some neighbourhood restaurants or bars, and street vendors may not take credit cards. American Express is accepted at some higher-end
boutiques and restaurants that cater to tourists. Be aware: Many credit-card companies now impose surcharges on foreign transactions, and these surcharges can range from 2 to 4% or more. Some credit-card issuers decline foreign transactions unless you've notified the company of your travel plans ahead of time. Many Italian ticket machines and other vending devices require modern 'smart cards' with embedded microchips. If you have an old-fashioned card with only a magnetic stripe don't be surprised if machines refuse your card. The good

money Euro paper money comes in different colors and sizes. 500 Euro bills are violet, 200 Euro ones are yellow, 100 Euro bills are green, 50 are orange, 20 are blue, 10 are red(dish) and 5 are grey(ish).
Cash & atm’sAll shops and restaurants accept euros. These can be obtained from any Italian ATM’s (known as bancomats) as long as you have a valid card from one of the main international operators (Visa, MasterCard, Maestro). Be prepared to use a four-digit numeric PIN. If your bank uses a six-digit PIN or a combination of letters and numbers, ask the bank to change your PIN for travel purposes. You'll find ATMs at banks and post offices all over Italy and most of them have step-by-step instructions in your choice of Italian, English, and other languages. ATMs nearly always have better rates than currency-exchange offices and hotel reception desks.
eleCtriCity In Italy the voltage is 220 volts, with a frequency of 50 Hz, while in the United States or Canada it is 110 volts for 60Hz. Sockets in France are also 2 round pins whereas in the US its 2 flat pins. This means for the sockets adaptors are needed and for the voltage transformers may be necessary. Make sure you bring these with you, or else you might risk kissing your favourite electric razor or hairdryer goodbye, not to mention blowing the electricity in the whole hotel! If you’ve forgotten to bring these important accessories, you’ll be able to find them in electrical goods and DIY stores or hypermarkets.
telephone nUmbersItalian telephone numbers generally come in the form: +39 06 000 00 00. To understand this, 39 is the country code for Italy, 06 is the city or area code for Rome, and the rest is the local telephone number, which may vary in the number of digits.112 – emergency services; 118 – ambulance.

driving Italians drive on the right hand side of the road. Take care when crossing roads even in what appear to be pedestrianised areas as drivers don’t often indicate or stop at crossing points.
working/shopping In Rome hours of business for shops are usually from 9.30am–1.30pm, after which most shops shut for lunch and re-open from 4.30pm–7.30pm. Offices also close over the lunch period, as do many services including banks and post offices.
greetingsUpon meeting and leave-taking, both friends and strangers wish each other good day or good evening (buongiorno/buonasera), 'ciao' isn’t used between strangers. Italians who are friends greet each other with a kiss, usually first on the left cheek, then on the right. When you meet a new person, shake hands.
sightseeingItaly is full of churches. Many of them contain significant works of art, but they are also places of worship, so be sure to dress appropriately. Shorts and sleeveless tops are not allowed in most churches. Carrying large backpacks around churches is also not allowed, and nor is eating, drinking or talking on mobile phones.
dress CodeItalians dress well and seem to have an inborn sense of elegance and style.
Presentation and impression are all-important to Italians and are referred to as bella presenza or bella figura (literally ‘beautiful presentation or figure’). Italians generally dress well tending to be more formal in their attire than most northern Europeans and North Americans.
tippingIn Italy, service usually ranges from 1–3 Euros depending on the restaurant. Service is automatically added to the check, however if you would like to leave an additional tip, just round up the amount on the check by a couple of euros.

EATING OUT IN ROMEItaly and food are two words that cannot be separated. Hopefully, you’ll be having some of the best food that you’ve ever had during your trip. Italians take food very seriously and are very proud of the local traditions. Each region, and sometimes even a city, will have regional specialties that you cannot find anywhere else.
Roman food is simple. It is not sophisticated or elaborate, but generous, rich in flavours and character. The typical Roman food has its roots in the past and reflects old traditions. It is based on fresh vegetables (the king is definitely the artichoke), inexpensive cuts of meats, deep fried, tasty appetizers such as filled zucchini blossoms and sharp pecorino cheese. Pasta is a staple for every Roman from carbonara in a creamy sauce to alio and olio – olive oil, garlic and chili pepper and fragrant soups filled with beans and pasta. There are few Roman desserts, and they are mainly connected to festivities, however the ricotta cake, which is made with fresh ricotta cheese mixed with sugar, lemon, vanilla, candied fruits, pine nuts and raisins is definitely worth a try.

Eating out in RoME
Breakfast (8.00am–11.00am): Italians are not big breakfast eaters. They usually have a cappuccino and a croissant for breakfast and they have this standing up at the bar counter. Good tip: if you stand at the counter to drink your coffee it is a lot cheaper than if you sit down at a table.
Lunch (1.00pm–3.30pm): the large meal of the day is saved for lunch because lunch is followed by the civilised siesta, and then after siesta you are supposed to walk off your meal!
Dinner (8.00pm–10.30pm): dinner is generally a four course meal. It is common for Italians to have an Antipasto (appetizer), Primo (pasta, soup, or rice dish), Secondo (meat, poultry or fish course) and a Dolce (dessert) all for dinner.
There are a number of different types of eating places in Italy:
Ristorante: restaurant. Can be fancy and expensive, make sure you see the menu before sitting down.
Trattoria: family run restaurant, home-style cooking, moderately priced. Usually more casual than a ristorante.
Osteria: informal and rustic wine bar that serves regional food and appetizers. Usually moderately priced, but some new osterias can be trendy and more upscale.
Pizzeria: pizza restaurant, usually wood-fired ovens. Sometimes sold ‘al taglio’ (by the slice) or boxed and sold for take-out. Very reasonably priced.
Bar: a bar in Italy is not just a place for drinking alcohol and there are no age restrictions. It serves coffee, snacks and sandwiches.
Pasticceria: a café that has its own bakery, serving fresh pastries, cakes, and sandwiches. A great place to have your 11am snack with a fresh pastry and coffee.
Coffee making is an art in Italy. Cappuccino is a breakfast drink only, and should only be drunk until 11.00am, after that only espresso/espresso macchiato should be drunk.
Un caffé – if you ask for ‘a coffee’ you will get espresso.
Un caffé Americano – espresso diluted with hot water, served in a larger cup. This is what you want to order if you want something more similar to American coffee. It is still a lot stronger though!
Un cappuccino – espresso with some steamed milk. This is usually consumed for breakfast. Having one with your meal or after it is considered a ‘tourist’ thing.
Un caffé latte – hot milk with a shot of espresso, typically served in a tall glass (this is more similar to what would be considered a ‘latte’ in the U.S.).
Un caffé DEK (or decaffeinato) – decaf espresso. If you want American decaf, ask for ‘un caffe’ americano dek’.
Un macchiato – espresso with a dollup of steamed milk (literally ‘macchiato’ means stained, as if the milk ‘stains’ the coffee).

TOURS & ATTRACTIONSHere is a little information about some of the places you will visit during your time in Rome as part of your itinerary.
ColosseUmThe Colosseum built from 70 AD – 80 AD is the largest ever amphitheatre built during the Roman Empire. The Colosseum was estimated to hold 50,000 to 70,000 spectators, and was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles, including mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions and re-enactments of famous battles.
The Colosseum was in use for around 500 years with the last recorded games being held there as late as the 6th century- well after the traditional date of the fall of Roman empire in 476AD. Today, the Colosseum is the symbol of Rome worldwide, and is a major tourist attraction.
Fun fact: the Colosseum appears on the reverse of Italy’s five cent Euro coin. Bonus fun fact: Countries in the Euro Zone can mint their own coins and important monuments from their country of issue appear on their reverse.
forUmThe Roman Forum lies at the centre of the City of Rome between the Capitoline and Palatine Hills. During the Roman Rebublic the Forum was a public square/marketplace that was the centre of Roman life, used for commerce, business, public speeches, triumphal processions, and criminal trials. People first began meeting in the forum around 500BC. Today, much
In the Centre of Rome
11

of the forum has been destroyed, leaving the remains of columns, stone buildings and temples, but walking around it gives a really good idea of what it may have been like to live in ancient Rome.
Fun fact: the excavations to clear the Roman Forum took over 100 years and it wasn’t until the 20th century that it became fully excavated.
vatiCan CityThe Vatican City is a sovereign city-state, almost completely walled within the city of Rome. It is
the smallest independent nation in the world and is governed by the Pope, the Holy Father of the
Catholic Church. The most prominent building inside Vatican City is the Basilica of Saint Peter, dominated by Michelangelo’s dome. One of the largest churches in Christianity, St Peter’s covers an area of 6 acres and has a capacity of over 60,000 people. One of the holiest sites of Christendom, it is the burial site of Saint Peter, one of the twelve apostles.
Fun fact: no visit to Vatican City would be complete without seeing Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling, commissioned by Pope Julius II in 1508 and not finished by Michelangelo until four years of hard work later!
CataCombsThe Catacombs are the underground cemeteries located outside of the original city walls of Rome, that were used by the Christians and the Jews between the 2nd and the 5th centuries. Sixty catacombs have been discovered in Rome but only five are available to the public to visit, the most famous being San Sebastian and San Calisto. They are made up of
underground tunnels in the form of a labyrinth covering many miles and a number of the famous Saints are buried within the galleries of the Catacombs.
pantheonThe Pantheon was built by the Roman’s in 125 AD as a pagan temple. It is the best-preserved and most beautifully proportioned of Rome’s ancient monuments. The circular building has been used throughout history and since the 7th century as a Christian church. It is not known who the architect of the Pantheon was, although it is commonly thought that the emperor Hadrian had a hand in the design. The most striking feature of the Pantheon is the dome, which has a giant circular opening (oculus) at its centre. Many famous people are buried at The Pantheon including the painters Raphael and Caracci, and the architect Peruzzi. Also buried there are two kings of Italy: Vittorio Emanuele II and Umberto I.

trevi foUntainThe Trevi Fountain is the largest of the Baroque fountains of Rome standing 25.9m high and
19.8m wide. Work began in 1732, and was completed in 1762. The fountain was designed by Nicola Salvi, and finished by Giuseppe Pannini, following Salvi’s death in 1751. The fountain can be seen in several films including a scene in the 1953 comedy ‘Roman Holiday’ with Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn, ‘Three Coins in the Fountain’ and the famous scene with Anita Ekberg in Fellini’s Dolce Vita.
Fun fact: a legend holds that if visitors throw a coin into the fountain they will at some point in their lives return to Rome.
spanish stepsThe Spanish Steps is a stairway of 138 steps on a steep slope between the Piazza di Spagna at the bottom and Piazza Trinità dei Monti above, which is dominated by the 16th century French church, Trinità dei Monti. Built in 1717, the steps are thought to be designed by Francesco de Sanctis. Although they are called The Spanish Steps, it was actually the French who built them as a way to reach the French Church above. The steps and piazza are named ‘Spanish’ because the Spanish Embassy used to reside there. You can get some great views of the city from the top of the Steps.
Top tip: situated at the foot of the Spanish Steps is the Keats-Shelley House – a museum dedicated to the English Romantic poets, who were spellbound by the Eternal City. 26 Piazza di Spagna is most famous for being the final dwelling place of John Keats, who died here in 1821, aged just 25, and to this day Keats’s bedroom is preserved as a shrine to his tragic story and extraordinary talent.

pompeiiThe city of Pompeii is a partially buried Roman town-city near Naples in the Italian region of Campania. Along with Herculaneum, Pompeii was partially destroyed and buried under 4m to 6m of ash and soot in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. 20,000 people were killed and the city was preserved in the state it was in on the day of the catastrophe. Everything from jars and tables to paintings and people were frozen in time. Pompeii was lost for nearly 1,700 years before its rediscovery in 1748. Since then, its excavation has provided an extraordinarily detailed insight into the life of a city two thousand years ago. Today, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most popular tourist attractions of Italy, with approximately 2.5m visitors every year. Make sure to have a look at all the villas dotted around Pompeii with frescos, mosaics and artifacts preserved within them. Don't miss the Villa of Mysteries, the baths, the amphitheatre and the Garden of the Fugitives where plaster casts of several victims are on display.
frasCatiFrascati is a town in the province of Rome located 12 miles south-east of the city on the Alban Hills close to the ancient city of Tusculum. It is an important historical and artistic centre, renouned for its white wine and porchetta. It is a small relaxed town perfect for a getaway from the metropolis of Rome, with a slower pace of life, cleaner air and a more casual feel. Frascati is famous for its villas, in particular Villa Aldobrandini, built in the 16th Century by the Roman aristocracy as status symbols. It is also home to two beautiful churches, the Cathedral or Duomo di Frascati as its known and the Church of the Gesu, as well as an archaeological museum which houses temporary exhibitions.

The Palazzo Barberini was designed for Pope Urban VIII (Maffeo Barberini). It was started in 1627 by Italian architect Carlo Maderno assisted by his nephew Francesco Borromini, and finished by Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini in 1633, following the death of Maderno in 1629.

The Castel Sant’Angelo is a large circular building commissioned by the Roman Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself and his family. Built around 123AD along the shore of the Tiber River, near the Vatican, the building spent over a thousand years as either a fortress or a castle, and is now a museum. Much of the tomb contents have been lost since the building’s conversion into a military fortress in 401AD. In the 14th century the Popes converted the structure into a castle. It is linked to St Peter’s by a long passageway.
The Papal state also used Sant’Angelo as a prison, and its courtyards were the scene of executions. The castle was de-commissioned in 1901 and in 1925 became the National Museum of Castel Sant’Angelo.

The Vittorio Emanuele II monument, designed by Giuseppe Sacconi at the end of 19th century, is a monument to honour Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of a unified Italy. It was inaugurated in 1911 and completed in 1935. The colossal white marble structure has a huge equestrian sculpture of Victor Emmanuel II and two statues of the goddess Victoria. The monument contains the tomb of the First World War’s unknown soldier; a museum of Italian Reunification; and a café. You can get amazing views of Rome from the café level for free, but for a fee you can take a lift to the very top. Romans compare it to a wedding cake or a Victorian typewriter, so this is often what you will hear them calling it!

to Mary in Western Christendom. The Basilica has kept its original 5th century structure though it has been embellished over time. According to legend the location of the church was chosen after a miraculous summer snowfall that outlined where the church should be built. This is commemorated every year on 5th August, when white rose petals are dropped from the dome during the festal Mass. The highlights of the Basilica are the stunning mosaics.

The Basilica of St John Lateran is the Cathedral Church of Rome and the official seat of the Pope. (This is not St Peter’s in the Vatican as people think, however the pope does reside at the Vatican). The Church therefore contains the Papal Throne and ranks above all other churches in the Roman Catholic Church, even above St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. Although the Pope rarely visits! Originally built in the 4th century by Constantine, it has since been rebuilt many times.

San Giovanni dei Fiorentini, is a graceful 16th century church dedicated to St John the Baptist, the protector of Florence. The church was commissioned by Pope Leo X as a showcase for Florentine artistic talent. Jacopo Sansovino won a competition for its design, which was then executed by Antonio Sangallo the Younger and Giacomo della Porta. Carlo Maderno completed the elongated cupola in 1614, while the travertine facade was added by Alessandro Galilei in the mid-18th century.

Location: Piazza del Popolo, facing the northern gate of the Aurelian Walls, at the entrance of Via del Corso on the square.
Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Santa Maria di Montesanto are two churches in Rome. The churches are often cited as 'twin', due to their similar external appearance. The origin of the two churches traces back to the 17th-century restoration of what was the main entrance to the Middle Ages and Renaissance Rome, from the Via Flaminia. Pope Alexander VII commissioned the monumental design of the entrance of Via del Corso to architect Carlo Rainaldi. This included two churches with central plans.

The Ara Pacis Augustae is an altar to Peace, envisioned as a Roman goddess. It was commissioned by the Roman Senate in 13 BC to honour the triumphal Gallic and Spanish campaigns of the Roman Emperor Augustus and was consecrated in 9 BC by the Senate to celebrate the peace established in the Empire after Augustus’s victories. The Ara Pacis Augustae stood in the flood plain of the river Tiber, where it became buried under four metres of silt over the centuries. Fragmentary sculptures were rediscovered over the centuries. In 1938,

The Mouth of Truth (La Bocca della Verità) is a huge stone face. Starting from the Middle Ages, it was believed that if a person told a lie with their hand in the mouth of the sculpture, it would be bitten off. You can try it for yourself! There are many theories on what the structure actually was including a drain cover; part of an ancient Roman Fountain; the cover of a sacred well, amongst others. The sculpture was placed in the portico of the
Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin in the 17th century. The Mouth of Truth is also well known from its appearance in the 1953 film ‘Roman Holiday’, when both Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck both put their hands inside the mouth of the stone face.

The Vatican Post Office has had its own postal service since 1929 and uses the postcode 00120. It is considered ‘one of the best postal systems in the world’, and far better than the Italian postal system. As a result of this a number of Italians go to Vatican City to post their mail, however Italian stamps cannot be used on Vatican mail and vice versa! This is a great place to send a send a post card home, or collect stamps. There are two Post Office locations in St. Peter’s Square, along the Charlemagne Wing (left side) and just beyond the colonnades on the right side. There is also a Post Office in the Vatican Museum. Remember items must have Vatican postage and be mailed from the Vatican.

Trastevere is a medieval area of Rome. The nicest part is centred around Piazza di Santa Maria, where you can find many restaurants & cafes, bars, shops and street performers, among narrow cobbled streets lined by medieval houses and the enchanting 12th century church of Santa Maria in Trastevere. Also in Trastevere you will find the Renaissance Villa Farnesina, where a famous fresco by Raphael ‘The Triumph of Galatea’ (1511) can be found. It is advised to take a map with you when visiting Trastevere as the narrow streets go in all directions and it is easy to get lost.
sqUaresRome’s squares (piazzas) are one of the main attractions of the Capital city so make sure to see as many as you can. In Rome piazzas are a meeting point for friends to catch up, sit and people watch, or take a stroll. Here are a few of the best: Piazza del Campidoglio (on the Capitol Hill) is the headquarter of the Italian Government; Piazza Venezia represents the ‘heart of the city’; Piazza Navona displays the spectacular Baroque triumphant architecture; Piazza di Spagna is a masterpiece of the XVIII century with its famous Spanish steps and, last but not least, St Peter’s Square is the majestic access to St Peter’s Basilica, the centre of Christianity.

Via Condotti, Via Borgognona and Via Frattina are three streets that start near the Piazza di Spagna and run parallel until they reach the Via del Corso (also known as ‘The Corso’). They are the best known for highly expensive fashion in Rome. Via Condotti begins at the Spanish Steps and is the best known of this group of three streets and is Rome’s equivilent of 5th Avenue, with famous high end stores including Bulgari, Armani, Hermès, Cartier, and Ferragamo. Via Borgognona contains more fashion houses, including those of Fendi, Laura Biagiotti, Gai Mattiolo, and Dolce & Gabbana, whilst Via Frattina is the home of Tiffany and Versace.
Via Cola di Rienzo is one of the most important streets for shopping in the city. It is more affordable than the Piazza di Spagna area, but the shops are still not inexpensive with high street names such as Tommy Hilfiger, Energy, Diesel Jeans, Miss Sixty, Benetton and Brandy. The biggest department store in the street is Coin. Via del Corso is home to the more affordable clothing shops in the city, with century-old shops alongside a variety of megastores that sell everything from leather goods to athletic wear and casual clothing.
The area near Fontana di Trevi, has lots of shops and is great for souvenirs and gifts to take home, as is the intricate network of roads all around the Piazza Navona Square where you can find lots of great bargains and sales. One other shopping
SHOPPING & MARKETSShops and stores can be found all over the city, often with bright and colourful window displays showing off the latest in Italian fashion to everyone walking by. Italy is considered a fashion capital so make sure to snap up lots of bargains whilst you are here during the Christmas sales.

rome's marketsYou cannot enjoy Rome – or any city in Italy – without visiting a local market. Fortunately, in Rome there are lots of local markets, which sell foods, flowers, antiques… in fact you name it, they have it! Below are listed a couple of popular markets in Rome, but you are likely to stumble across lots more whilst you walk around the city.
Campo de’ fioriPiazza Campo de’ Fiori.
Opening times: 7.00am – 1.30pm (every day except Sunday)
Rome’s most picturesque and historical market. Its name, Campo de’ Fiori, which translates as field of flowers, often makes people think that it is a flower market, however the name actually comes from Campus Florae (Flora’s square) – Flora being the lover of the great Roman general Pompey. A market has been held in Campo de’Fiori piazza for many centuries, every morning, except Sunday, with an array of stalls selling colourful fruit and vegetables.
porta porteseOff Viale Trastevere
Opening times: 5.00am – 2.00pm (Sundays)
This is the largest market in Rome, and stallholders come from as far away as Naples and set up in the early hours of the morning. There are a huge amount of things being sold, from clothes, shoes and bags to luggage, linen, kitchen utensils, plants, pets, records, CD’s and furniture. Furniture stalls tend to be concentrated around Piazza Ippotito Nievo along with ‘antiques’. A lot of people go just for the fun of it and always end up buying something, after bartering with the stall holders of course!

piazza navonaChristmas Market in Piazza NavonaOpening times: all day every day from the end of November to the beginning of January.
Piazza Navona is one of Rome’s most stunning Piazzas. Over Christmas it transforms itself into a magical Christmas market for the month of December. A visit to the Christmas Market in Piazzi Navona is a time-honored tradition for many Italian families. Stalls are full of Christmas ornaments, toys, and decorations, as well as plenty of food and drink including sweets, pork sandwiches, giant doughnuts and toffee apples, with clowns, mime artists and jugglers.
other marketsOn the Via Ostiense there is an ‘Eco-Solidarity Market’ which sells used clothing, antiques and bric a brac all day on Sundays.
Mercato delle Stampe is located in Largo della Fontanella di Borghese, and is held every morning except Sunday. It sells antique books, magazines, engravings and prints.
The Via Sannio market is situated next to San Giovanni station, and sells mainly clothes and accessories. The centre of the market is covered, with stands on the surrounding streets. It is open on weekdays during the morning.
