Thank you to everyone who gave a gift to FMCT this year. The gifts came in all forms: from the time and effort of our volunteers, to the hard work and dedication of our staff, to our many patrons and visitors, and through financial gifts. We are happy to see new donors, new volunteers, new audience members, and new staff members join our community. We appreciate your gifts, and hope that each of you invite a new friend to join FMCT’s activities in 2014.

This season, please consider a financial donation on Giving Hearts Day, Thursday, February 13, 2014. This annual fundraising effort celebrates the philanthropy of the generous people in the Fargo, Moorhead, West Fargo and surrounding communities. In February of 2013, Giving Hearts Day participants raised over $3.6 million through 16,989 individual donations. This year, FMCT is joining our fellow non-profits in this effort, and have set a goal of $10,000. We are requesting that you give a donation to FMCT on Giving Hearts Day. These donations will assist in creating an arts-enriched environment for our community.

It is the mission of FMCT to provide theatrical and educational opportunities to enrich and engage the greater community. A great new series of videos demonstrates how FMCT has impacted the lives of individuals who are active volunteers at the theatre. Please check out our web site, www.fmct.org, and click on the Arts at the Heart of the Community logo to view the videos of your community members and hear their thoughts on FMCT and how it impacts them on a daily basis. On Giving Hearts Day, Thursday, February 13, please go to the web site www.impact.giveback.org and make a donation to FMCT in honor of your community. FMCT truly places the “arts at the heart of the community.”

“Turn-turn-kick-turn, turn-turn-kick-turn, One-two-three-kick-turn!” – The Producers. “Sing out Louise!” – Gypsy “Because I knew you, I have been changed for good.” – Wicked.

At the heart of theatre is a song, a dance, a lyric – a musical. Musicals have shaped the history of theatre. From a great Irving Berlin ballad to a contemporary lick from Pasek and Paul, we go on a journey from the music of Madame Butterfly, to a musical telling of A Christmas Story. These songs and the stories have ways of transporting us to another place or another time.

Music has the power to make one tap their toes, ease their fears, settle a stressful day, and ignite excitement. So can anyone think of a better way to kick off the New Year? At the Fargo-Moorhead Community Theatre we are excited to have been igniting the New Year with musical selections for five years, with The New Year’s Revue.

The Revue is put on our schedule because it continues to bring in new performers alongside veteran musical theatre artists to highlight some of the greatest songs ever written for the stage. Each year has had a new theme, and this year we are delighted to bring you the Gems of Broadway. The songs you hear today are selections less popular in big Broadway musicals or that have gone unsung in some time.

The actors in today’s production are all from your community, from your neighborhood, or your workplace. They come together to put their take, their emotions, and their life into these musical numbers. From one show to the next they evolve, and find new meaning, and that is the greatest thing about watching this show come to life.

“All the best performers bring to their role something more, something different than what the author put on paper. That’s what makes theatre live. That’s why it persists.”Stephen Sondheim

My first memory of theatre was in the summer of 1992. Disney’s newest animated movie, Beauty and the Beast, had been a huge success earlier that fall and so my hometown community theatre had found a version to produce that summer. My father was playing Belle’s father so I spent a lot of time at rehearsal and at performance. I wasn’t really sure exactly what was going on…other then being really afraid of the beast when he was in full make-up! Fast forward to the summer of 1995. By now, I only had a basic understanding of acting. So my parents, enrolled me in what I thought was day camp that taught acting and singing. Little did I know I was actually in rehearsal for my first show…a street kid in Little Shop of Horrors. By the end of that summer I knew I wanted to work in theatre for the rest of my life.

I moved to Fargo in the fall of 2003 to attend NDSU. I remember the first day of that 106 class that all the freshmen had to take. On that first day, they made us write down two questions and put them in a bowl up front. One of my questions was “Where is the Fargo-Moorhead Community Theatre?” I knew, even back then, that I wanted to be part of this wonderful organization. It would take another five years before FMCT would enter my life.

Being a part of FMCT, and now other theatre companies in the area, has really helped define who I am as a person and as a Director. I’m still young and am constantly learning new things on every play or musical I work on. I was so thrilled when I was offered the job to direct The New Year’s Musical Revue this season! I couldn’t have asked for a better cast, crew, creative team or administrative staff who all help make this production what it is. New friendships have been made and new music has been discovered, which is a great way to start a new year! I invite you to sit back, relax, and enjoy The Gems of Broadway!
