throughout the Chicago metropolitan area. The Singers have been praised for their imaginative programs and performing excellence.

New Classic Singers has performed three times for conventions of the American Choral Directors Association and frequently commissions

and performs new works. NCS has performed with the Kronos Quartet and Nexus Percussion Ensemble and has recorded new issues for

Boosey & Hawkes Music Publishers.

Founder and Music Director Lee R. Kesselman has been Director of Choral Activities at College of DuPage since 1981. Conductor, pianist, teacher and award-winning composer, in New Classic Singers he has created an ensemble from his love for the vocal art and interest in a wide variety of literature. A member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers and recipient of 17 consecutive ASCAP awards. Mr. Kesselman’s compositions have been published by Boosey &

Hawkes, Roger Dean Music Co., Colla Voce and Kesselman Press. He co-founded the Choral Music Experience Institute for Choral Teacher Education with Doreen Rao and has served on its faculty since 1986. He is in frequent demand as a guest conductor, lecturer and clinician and as a composer-in-residence throughout the United States and abroad. Kesselman is well-known as a composer of vocal works, including opera, music for chorus, and solo songs. Large works include the operas THE BREMEN TOWN MUSICIANS and THE EMPEROR’S NEW CLOTHES, LOVE PHASES for baritone voice and piano, NIGHTS IN ARMOR for mixed chorus, SHONA MASS for voices and African percussion, and INFINITY IN THE PALM OF YOUR HAND, a symphony for treble chorus and orchestra. His works for children’s choirs have brought him national attention and he has been commissioned to write for children’s choirs, middle school, junior school, high school, college, community, church, and professional ensembles.

Enjoying a national reputation as an accompanist, chamber musician, adjudicator and clinician, William Buhr’s work as a collaborative pianist has taken him to performing engagements in over thirty countries on six continents. Buhr has served on the accompanying staff of the Chicago Symphony Chorus at the invitation of founder/director Margaret Hillis, and has accompanied James Levine, Michael Tilson Thomas, Yo-Yo Ma, June Anderson, Berndt Weikl and others at the Ravinia Festival.

He has also worked with Stephen Sondheim, Patti LuPone, Audra McDonald and Michael Cerveris in the Ravinia Festival productions of Sunday In The Park With George and Anyone Can Whistle. Holding degrees from the University of Illinois and DePaul University, Mr. Buhr has appeared in many international festivals as well as numerous national and regional conventions of major musical and educational organizations. Mr. Buhr has served on the faculty of the Choral Music Experience Institute for Choral Teacher Education with Doreen Rao since its inception in 1986, and has played for the national touring companies of numerous Broadway musicals including Showboat, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, and The Phantom of the Opera. He has served as the Associate Director and accompanist of the New Classic Singers since 1986, and has enjoyed an association with Anima - Young Singers of Greater Chicago (formerly the Glen Ellyn Children’s Chorus) since 1984.

Welcome to our 29th season! Since New Classic Singers was founded in 1982, we have presented a holiday concert called “A Family Christmas Album.” The concert has taken on many faces, with holiday music old and new, traditional and contemporary, brand-new and familiar. We’ve explored many cultures, languages and styles, with varied guest artists and have always tried to celebrate the holiday season with songs and arrangements to treasure. This year we take a slightly different approach. With the help of guests Mark Colby and Sherry Kujala, we’ll segue more directly from piece to piece. We’ll explore some of the jazzy implications of familiar holiday music. We’ll bring the audience into our vocal experience with sing-alongs. And we’ll include music which is not so much Christmas music, but music of winter, Christmas, Hanukkah, New Year’s and some themes that are universal to this season -- Light, Love, Hope and Peace. We hope this concert makes you richer, hearing the beauty of the music, feeling the resonance of these themes, going out with a renewed sense of magic, meaning and delight. Saxophonist Mark Colby has performed with Gerry Mulligan, Jaco Pastorius, Frank Sinatra, Maynard Ferguson, Bob James, Charlie Haden and Mose Allison. He is a first call studio

musician, and has played on over 2,000 commercials in the competitive Chicago market. Born in Brooklyn, Mark’s family moved to Miami where he began playing professionally at the age of 14. He had the opportunity to play shows and popular acts, including Tony Bennett, Sonny and Cher, Bill Cosby, Ann-Margret and Sammy Davis, Jr., with seasoned musicians. He was for many years the youngest guy on the bandstand, all the while pursing his desire to play all styles of jazz. As a high school student, he studied with James Casale (co-author of Patterns for Jazz with Jerry Coker.) After high school, Mark attended the University of Miami, enrolling in Jerry Coker’s Jazz Studies program. Studying with Jerry and pianist Vince Maggio had a profound effect on him, as did sitting in with Ira Sullivan since the age of 15. While in college, he recorded with the likes of Dr. John, Wilson Pickett, Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones, and the Bee Gees. During this time, he assembled a jazz group with keyboardist Ron Miller, and excellent player and composer. Early members of that group included Mark Egan (bass) and Danny Gottlieb (drums.) After graduating with a Master’s Degree in Jazz Studies, he received a call from Maynard Ferguson inviting him to join his band in New York. After three albums and three years touring as featured soloist and musical director with Maynard, Bob James beckoned, and he became of member of the “James gang.” Bob signed Mark to Columbia Records, beginning his solo recording career. “Serpentine Fire” and “One Good Turn” both sold very well, while he toured for the next six years as a featured member of Bob James’ band. Mark’s tours with Maynard and Bob found him playing jazz festivals and concert halls around the world. In 1980, Mark moved to Chicago, immediately participating in a recording market that was exploding. In 1983, he was approached by DePaul University to assume a teaching position as jazz saxophone instructor. Twenty-five years later, he’s still there, and in 1998 joined the faculty at Elmhurst College. In the ensuing years, he has played and toured with such varied luminaries as Frank Sinatra, Jaco Pastorius, Mose Allison, Joe Williams and Charlie Haden. Currently he is performing as a guest soloist and clinician/adjudicator at

high schools and colleges throughout the United States and Europe, representing Selmer Saxophones and Vandoren reeds. In 2001, he performed Duke Ellington’s version of “The Nutcracker Suite” with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and in 2008 performed Leonard Bernstein’s “Prelude, Fugue and Riffs.” In 1999, Hallway Records released “Reunion” (with Vince Maggio) followed by “Tenor Reference” in 2002, to glowing reviews and appreciative audiences. His last release on Hallway Records was a tribute to Stan Getz entitled Speaking of Stan, which was released in 2006 and went to #3 on the jazz radio charts. In 2007-8, he appeared at the Chicago, Evanston, Naperville and Glen Ellyn Jazz Festivals. Mark appears in a cameo with Diana Krall in the Johnny Depp movie “Public Enemies,” released in July 2009. His CD on Origin Records, “Reflections” was released in November 2008. Mark has regularly performed with New Classic Singers and the Arts Center Jazz Ensemble with Tom Tallman. Sherry Kujala, flute, maintains a career that balances her interests in flute performance, publishing, and arts administration. Sherry completed her master of music in flute performance at

Northwestern University (Evanston, Illinois) in 1985, and upon graduation from Northwestern, she won a spot in the Civic Orchestra of Chicago (the training orchestra of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra), and at the same time, took a position on the staff of the Chicago Symphony in the Develop-ment Department. After three years in that position, Sherry returned to school, but instead of following her previous plans to pursue a doctorate in music, she entered the Kellogg Graduate School of Manage-ment at Northwestern. In addition to performing in the flute sections of a number of orchestras throughout the Midwest, she has appeared as a soloist in performances of concertos and solos by Carl Nielsen, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Concerto in G Major, Concerto in D Major, and the Concerto for Flute and Harp), Antonio Vivaldi (concertos for both flute and piccolo), Carl Reinecke, and Poem by Charles T. Griffes. Sherry also co-manages Progress Press, a publishing house which specializes in works for and about the flute. Sherry has regularly performed at the Arts Center and with New Classic Singers.


WHEATON WARRENVILLE SOUTH H IGH SCHOOL CHA MBER CHOIR

This is the most select ensemble of 10th, 11th and 12th graders chosen by audition each spring. It is a highly selective group that builds upon past choral experience with an emphasis placed on advanced choral technique, musicianship, sight-reading, and significant, meaningful repertoire. The choir rehearses daily and members are given full academic credit in meeting the 1-year fine arts graduation requirement. Nearly all members study voice privately, either during the school day, or in after-school settings. The choir performs regularly in 4 annual concerts and in the west suburban area as a part of its community outreach. The choir has sung for the American Choral Director’s Association state and regional conventions, as well as Music Educators state, regional and national conventions. As part of their community awareness the choir raised over $1500 towards music lessons for the children of Angels and Starfish daycare center in Hout Bay, South Africa, and each year collects toy and food donations for the Humanitarian Service Project.

Gordon S. Krauspe is Director of Choir at Wheaton Warrenville South High School in Wheaton, Illinois where he directs the Chamber Singers, Concert Chorale, Varsity Women’s Chorale, and the Men’s Chorale, as well as teaching Rock and Roll History. He holds a Bachelor of Music Ed. and Master of Music degree from Northern Illinois University. His teaching experience is at all levels kindergarten through university. In his tenure at Wheaton Warrenville South the choral program has grown from 2 choirs of 100 singers to 6 ensembles involving nearly 250 students, and a

staff of two choral directors and 6 private voice instructors. Mr. Krauspe also directs a Fathers and Sons Chorus each spring. Choirs under Mr. Krauspe’s direction have toured the United States, Canada and Europe and have performed at a variety of festivals, conventions and contests, including twice for the MENC National Convention, the ACDA Central Division Convention, and for the National School Board Association National Convention. The American Music Conference has twice named District 200 as one of the “100 Best School Music Programs in America”. Mr. Krauspe served 9 years as director of the adult choir at St. John’s Church in Winfield, IL. He conducts for the Rising Stars Show Choir camp each summer, and is the senior chorale director for the Midwest Young Artists. He frequently works as a festival clinician, conductor and adjudicator, is listed repeatedly as “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers” and “Who’s Who In America,” and the University of Chicago has also recognized him as an “Outstanding High School Educator”. In 2003, Mr. Krauspe directed the Illinois Honor Choir in the “Music Education Day at the Capitol” program.

Gordon Krauspe has served as a district chairperson for the Illinois Music Educators Association and as president for Illinois and the Central Division of the American Choral Directors Association. Mr. Krauspe has sung professionally as a member of the Chicago Symphony Chorus, Grant Park Chorus, St. James Cathedral - Chicago, the Fine Arts Chorale and in various choral activities in the Chicago and suburban region.

New Classic Singers is now in its 29th season as the premiere choral ensemble of the western suburbs. Since 1982 we have performed over 100 programs, commissioned or premiered 13 new works, hosted 17 composer residencies and collaborated with groups as diverse as Kronos Quartet and Anima. This season we are collaborating with high school choirs from the Glenbard and Wheaton school districts and are enjoying the chance to interact with these wonderful young singers and our larger community.

In March we will be performing a new Pulitzer Prize-winning work, David Lang’s little match girl passion. We are now in our third season as an independent arts organization with no direct financial support from College of DuPage. Like all of our peers, we rely on contributions and grants to supplement our ticket income. We continue to grow as an organization and our list of contributors, happily, keeps growing too. Thank you! New Classic Singers is proud to perform the Chicago-area premiere of David Lang’s Pulitzer Prize winner the little match girl passion for our next program. This powerful and haunting work sets Hans Christian Andersen’s story The

Little Match Girl in the format of Bach’s Saint Matthew Passion, interspersing Andersen’s narrative with the composer’s versions of the crowd and character responses from Bach’s Passion. We’ll complete the program with sacred music from Eastern Europe, including Pärt, Gretchaninov, and Rachmaninoff. Tickets
