“Coffee” Refreshments

The Coffee Committee welcomes you back to Newcomers for the 2015-16 season! Our chairman this year is Nancy Michaud. Our responsibility is to be sure that coffee & tea are ready, pitchers of water are out, and the goodies (provided by our members) are out on the table for your enjoyment prior to the meeting. A sign-up sheet will be passed around at each Coffee asking for volunteers to bring snacks for the next Coffee. Please remember our diabetic members. Being on the Coffee Committee has some great perks...(1) great opportunity to meet other ladies as they drop off their goodies and/or come to get their coffee and (2) since we put the goodies out, we get to see everything first (and maybe have a taste)! So, if you think you would like to join us as a member of the Coffee Committee, please stop by to speak with Nancy in the kitchen or call her at 609-577-5670 / [email protected].

The luncheons are usually held on the fourth Wednesday of the month, September through May. The locations of the luncheons are planned by the Second Vice Presidents in coordination with the Club Board and are held at various facilities on the Grand Strand. An interesting program is always presented at these luncheons. Please make every attempt to make your reservation for the luncheon at the monthly Coffee. Sharon Faas and Myra Spitzhoff will be seated at a table at the back of the room where you can pay for your lunch. Cash or checks are accepted. Make checks payable to "Newcomers". Exact change would be greatly appreciated if you are paying in cash. No money can be refunded to a member after the final reservations have been made. If you cannot make your reservation at the Coffee, you may call Roberta Schnur at 843-215-6985 (between 9 am and 6 pm as a courtesy). Each August our Newcomers Board and our President select the charitable and service organizations we’ll be working to help support during the year. President’s Pick: For this year, President Mary Costello has selected the Independence Fund Hyperbaric and Wellness Center in North Myrtle Beach. This registered charity is committed to improving the lives of veterans by providing life changing therapies including hyperbaric oxygen therapy, neuro-feedback, wave-therapy, counseling and other services. Treatments are done in a drug-free environment, at no cost to veterans. Services are also available to children and adults who suffer from stroke, autism and other neurological and pain related disorders, with payment required. Treatments generally last from 4-6 weeks. The Center provides housing for veterans and their families. The Center is also in need of volunteers. The Board has chosen two charities: Savannah's Playground is being constructed in the Market Common neighborhood. The mission of this project is to provide a safe area for social interaction and exercise for children of all abilities through enabling playgrounds and programs designed to address special needs. Teen Angel is aimed at addressing critical needs of homeless and near-homeless students at North Myrtle Beach High School. Books, school supplies, prescriptions, transportation to doctor's appointments, clothing...pretty much anything a teenager needs in order to stay in school until graduation is supplied. If anyone has any questions about our charities, or if you would like information on volunteering to help any of these choices, please contact Wendy Margulies at 843-399-3106.

Purple Bucket: As our new year begins, we have decided to renew the Purple Bucket Collection. Each month, at our Coffee and again at our Luncheon, we will pass a purple bucket around for your voluntary contributions to the registered charitable organization selected by the Board. For the month of September, we have selected Help4Kids. Help4Kids is a non-profit organization that helps provide food, clothing and school supplies to underprivileged children in Horry County. It is run strictly with volunteers and100% of all donations goes directly to the kids. They also provide food bags for the children to take home on the weekends.
