Seminarian Pancratio Yoon We welcome your call and are here to serve you! Contact

the Parish Office to speak with us or make an appointment. We look forward to hearing from you!

We are the Catholic Center and Campus Ministry at the

University of Hawaiʻi, and under the Catholic Diocese of

Honolulu, serving parishioners, staff, faculty, and students

alike that stimulates critical thinking and dialogue about

issues that challenge Christian living and commits to a living

faith that practices and promotes justice.

We are a spirit-filled and welcoming community that

proclaims and celebrates the Good News through liturgy,

the sacraments, faith sharing, outreach, and social

action. As the Roman Catholic Community of the

University of Hawai‘i, we offer opportunities for life-long

faith development to all who choose to join us. We invite

the contribution of gifts in stewardship and evangelism, and

challenge one another in the same manner that Jesus

challenges us: to love the Lord, your God, with all your

heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind and to love

your neighbor as yourself.

Come journey with us!

From the Desk of the Pastor

“Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal

life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are

the Holy One of God.” This weekend’s gospel is the

last section of chapter 6 which comes

after the Bread of Life discourse of Jesus where he revealed

to his disciples that he is the Bread of

Life, the new Manna come down

from heaven. Jesus said in the discourse that he will give them his

Body and Blood to eat and drink as

food for eternal life. We hear that many of his disciples found

this too hard to accept that they returned to their former way of

life and left Jesus. They just could not put their faith in him and his teachings. Disappointed and sadden, Jesus turned to the

Twelve and asked them to also decide to accept his words or to

walk away like the others. Peter spoke and renewed his

commitment to remain and follow Jesus. While he spoke for himself, he also spoke for the body of the remaining disciples.

The importance of commitment and the continued need to

reconfirm that commitment is the common theme in our

readings this weekend. Joshua in the first reading reminds the twelve tribes of Israel of all the good God had done for them

and asked them to renew their covenant commitment to

Yahweh.

The often-misunderstood reading from Ephesians also is an exhortation of St. Paul to serve the Lord. The love

between two people should be sacrificial love in service for one

another.

All readings this weekend invite us to renew our

commitment and covenant love with God and to show forth that love in our care and concern for others.

Have a blessed week,

Fr. Alfred Omar (@fralfred808)

DECISIONS There is an axiom that states, “Not to decide is to decide.” This saying was popular in the turbulent times of the Vietnam War. It urged us not to allow others to answer the moral questions raised by our nation’s involvement in that terrible conflict, but to decide for ourselves. Making such choices is never easy. Avoiding them is common. Jesus, for his part, was not only a gallant risk-taker, but a clear decision-maker. As he pursued the mission to which the Father called him, he continually decided for us and for the Father. He worked hard to lay out a scenario that would enable others to make similar choices. Never did he make decisions for others or force others into decisions, even decisions that had eternal ramifications. Jesus is inviting us to make such decisions today. We won’t be absolutely sure. What is sure, however, is the command that issues from God’s word: Take the risk. Decide! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Contemplative Prayer (via Zoom)

FEAST OF FAITH Come, Spirit! The presider at the Eucharist can choose from among a number of different Eucharistic Prayers, all of which follow a similar pattern. Almost always, they begin with an epiclesis, a Greek word that means “invocation upon” or “calling over here.” At this moment in the prayer, the priest calls down the Holy Spirit upon the gifts of bread and wine that we have brought to the altar: “Father, we bring you these gifts. We ask you to make them holy by the power of your Spirit, that they may become the body and blood of your Son” (Eucharistic Prayer III). The words of the prayer are accompanied by the ritual gesture of the laying on of hands, the ancient sign of the gift of the Spirit, which is also used in most sacramental celebrations, from the rite of confirmation to the ordination of deacons, priests, and bishops. Liturgists sometimes call this first epiclesis the epiclesis of consecration. Later in the Eucharistic Prayer, there will be another epiclesis, the epiclesis of communion, as the priest asks that the Holy Spirit be sent upon us to transform us. “Grant that we, who are nourished by his body and blood, may be filled with his Holy Spirit, and become one body, one spirit in Christ” (Eucharistic Prayer III). —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. STEWARDSHIP PRAYER

Your presence at the Eucharistic Table is truly the source and

summit of our faith. And in the breaking of the bread your

presence is meant to impel us to reach beyond our immediate gathering and unify us with the larger gathering of our sisters

and brothers around the globe.

If we can recognize you in the Sacrament of the Eucharist, we

must also be able to recognize you among those who hunger and suffer in the world. But if our faith in your presence under

the appearance of bread and wine does not translate into action,

we are still unbelievers.

Deepen our faith, make us good stewards of your Eucharistic presence and help us to bear fruit in the lives of those we

encounter, especially those most in need of your love and

compassion. Amen

STEWARDSHIP MOMENT

In today’s Gospel, we hear that a number of Jesus’ followers left him because his message was too difficult for them to accept. In essence, they did not believe in him. He then asked the Twelve if they wished to leave as well. Peter responds by making a profound profession of faith in Jesus as Lord and Savior. The Twelve made a choice and stood by their choice, remaining loyal to their commitment to Jesus. A good question for our reflection might be this: Are we satisfied with the stewardship we exercise over our baptismal commitment? Are we just “along for the ride?” Are we keeping Christ in front of us as we make decisions about our daily activities, our relationships, our parish, issues in the workplace, issues such as peace and justice? What is the quality of our stewardship?
