Eddie Sandberg, Court-land, was selected as the 2012 Hereford Herdsman of the Year at the Na-tional Western Stock Show (NWSS) in Denver. Sand-berg was selected for the award by his peers — other Hereford herdsmen and breeders — and was hon-ored prior to the selection of the supreme champion Hereford on January 14.

Sandberg grew up in Indiana showing crossbred and Simmental heifers and steers. He was active in 4-H and FFA in his hometown of Monon. He attended Kansas

State University, where he competed on the livestock judging team. While in school he met Kevin Jen-sen, Courtland, and started working for the Jensen fam-ily part-time. After graduat-ing from K-State in 2005, he moved to Courtland and started working for Jensen Bros. as their herdsman.

Sandberg has helped the Jensen family earn numerous purple banners through the years, but his responsibilities are far more than getting the show cattle ready. He helps oversee Jensen’s 300-head cow herd

as well as helps manage Jensen Genetics, a custom semen collection service.

“He is truly a herdsman at our place,” Jensen says. “He AIs (artificially insemi-nates) our cows, assists with bull collection, calves cows and helps with the day-to-day management.”

Sandberg said he was

honored to be named the 2012 Hereford Herdsman of the Year.

“Looking back at his-tory and the guys who have come before me, they are some of the breed’s legend-ary breeders and fitters. They are people others call to get advice. It’s an honor to be part of that club,” he said.

Eddie Sandberg, Court-land, was selected as the 2012 Hereford Herdsman of the Year at the Na-tional Western Stock Show (NWSS) in Denver. Sand-berg was selected for the award by his peers — other Hereford herdsmen and breeders — and was hon-ored prior to the selection of the supreme champion Hereford on January 14.

Sandberg grew up in Indiana showing crossbred and Simmental heifers and steers. He was active in 4-H and FFA in his hometown of Monon. He attended Kansas

State University, where he competed on the livestock judging team. While in school he met Kevin Jen-sen, Courtland, and started working for the Jensen fam-ily part-time. After graduat-ing from K-State in 2005, he moved to Courtland and started working for Jensen Bros. as their herdsman.

Sandberg has helped the Jensen family earn numerous purple banners through the years, but his responsibilities are far more than getting the show cattle ready. He helps oversee Jensen’s 300-head cow herd

as well as helps manage Jensen Genetics, a custom semen collection service.

“He is truly a herdsman at our place,” Jensen says. “He AIs (artificially insemi-nates) our cows, assists with bull collection, calves cows and helps with the day-to-day management.”

Sandberg said he was

honored to be named the 2012 Hereford Herdsman of the Year.

“Looking back at his-tory and the guys who have come before me, they are some of the breed’s legend-ary breeders and fitters. They are people others call to get advice. It’s an honor to be part of that club,” he said.

February 1 Marcia Klau-mann became the new Belleville Area Free University Coordi-nator upon the resignation of developer and five-semester coordinator Kathy Dunback, according to Board of Direc-tors president Bob Arbuthnot. The Free University began in 1979 and eventually grew to 117 teachers sharing skills with other members of the community of Belleville, and later throughout the county.

Pike Valley boys climaxed a four game week by beating the Waconda East Vikings 44-41 in the finals of the Pike Trail tour-ney at Mankato Friday Night. The Pike Valley girls advanced to the finals by beating Jewell and Esbon. They lost to the strong North Central team in the finals by a 63-56 score, having previ-ously upset the Cougars.

School Creek Journal—If my memory is correct, Pastor Pearson was 95 on January 2, a month ago. When Ralph and I visited them in 1975, we were so impressed with the scope of their activities. They have helped with many services and pastoral duties since they “retired” in October, 1956. They have added another quarter century of ser-vice to church and community.

Dr. Roger McCartney, Bel-leville veterinarian, filed to run against Truman Johnson, the in-cumbent for mayor of Belleville. Johnson has held the office for two years.

Three men all in their late teens or early 20s are being held in the Ottawa County jail at Minneapolis as the result of lunch hour robbery attempts Monday at the United Bank of Minneapolis.

Cynthia L. Ward, Belleville High School Senior is attend-ing a week long study of the American Democratic process in Washington, D.C. President Carter in his job just over one week is slated to be among an impressive list of federal officials who during the coming week, are scheduled to address the del-egation. Cynthia is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. James A. Ward.

An injunction hearing was set to stop Belleville school District 14 from annexing District 43. An estimated 29 students are residents of District 43, which has a valuation of slightly less than $500,000. The board of education of District 14 voted to allow District 43 to annex to District 14 without having to pay on bonds already issued by District 14, which means that Dis-trict 43 would not have to pay on the new high school, nor on the new grade school building in Belleville.

The Belleville Post Office Department requested this week that Belleville residents please use their full addresses on letters. Ray Henderson, speaking for the post office, said that Belleville's growth and increase in number of mail dispatchers made it es-sential that the post office know the full names and addresses in order to see that the mail prop-erly reached its destination.

Construction of 15 homes in a new development near the Belleville high school building was announced this week by Eldon Saylor, Sanborn Lumber Company in Belleville. The homes will be Hillcrest manu-factured by Douglas Hill of Salina, and will be erected by the Sanborn Lumber company with part of the work sublet to the Charles Williams Construction company of Salina, Saylor said.

Belleville high school band, under the direction of Nelson King, is one of four bands from the state of Kansas invited to participate in the first annual Kansas State university Music Workshop, February 3.

Members of the Republic county hospital committee met with Dr. P.L. Beiderwell and an architectural concern at two different meetings during the past week studying the county's hospital problem.

The Republic County Soil Conservation District will hold its annual meeting at the Belleville high school Monday afternoon, Fred Gleue, work unit conservationist announced this week.

A delegation including the

city manager, city attorney and several of the councilmen will go to Topeka in the near future to discuss with the state Board of Heath and the Attorney General the possibility of the city obtain-ing federal aid funds for con-structing the new disposal plant.

The escaped prisoners from Nebraska City, NE, county jail and the object of a two-state hunt by police last weekend, stopped in Belleville and Republic county during the hectic week-end that saw them kidnap the Jewell County Sheriff and take him 110 miles to Hoxie, where they left him handcuffed to his car.

The county-wide dental ex-aminations which are now being conducted included 259 students from Belleville senior and junior high schools Friday. Another 245 Belleville youngsters were examined in the kindergarten, grade and junior high school on Tuesday of the last week. At Talmo and Agenda Monday, 190 students were examined, while a dental clinic at Wayne and Cuba Tuesday reported 156 examinations.

Increased naval activity in the Southwest Pacific area by the U.S. Fleet has resulted in heavy Axis losses, according to reports since Sunday. The first of the United States expeditionary force of the second World War landed in Ireland Monday.

First prize for general excellence was awarded last week to The Telescope for the second consecutive year by the Kansas press Association in its second annual Better newspaper Con-tests among Kansas newspa-pers. Awards were made at the annual meeting of the Kansas Press association in Wichita last Saturday.

Alfred Kiser, who broke from the Republic county jail on the night of January 11, was arrested Monday by officers at Burley, ID, according to a telegram received by Sheriff H. S. Graham. His apprehension was effected as a result of notifica-tion sent out by Sheriff Graham to officers in Utah, Idaho, New Mexico and Washington.

Rev. Louis Kvetensky of the Omaha United Brethren Church, will conduct a Bohe-mian service over station KFNF Shenandoah, IA, Sunday, Febru-ary 7 beginning at 4 p.m. The couple and their family spent their summer vacation in Cuba last year. During their stay, Rev. Kvetensky delivered a number of good sermons at the Presbyte-rian Church.

Friday night of this week the Republic High School basket ball teams come here for a double-header game. Cuba has not played Republic this year, as yet, because of the storm when the game there was to be played. Last year Cuba won two double headers from Republic, and now every indication points to a repi-tition of that feat this week.

The blackhanders who threatened violence to the George Nimocks family unless $1,000 was paid, remain at large and local officers apparently are no nearer a solution of the case than they were a week ago.

Ole Johnson wealthy farmer of near Sherdahl. It is reported has taken over the entire town, located between Scandia and Republic. The prop-erty included the elevator store, stock of merchandise, dwell-ing property and one acre of ground. The deal was brought about by the fact that the farmer who owned the business has become indebted to Mr. Johnson in the sum of $18,000 and to secure himself he was obliged to take over the whole town.

Russian thistles a few days ago during a high wind accu-mulated to such an extent on a cut on County Road 23 near Jamestown that they completely blocked highway traffic. The county commissioners were noti-fied and burned the thistles and traffic resumed.

George Fitzinger and George Munger, both of this city, have had a large number of men employed the past two weeks storing up ice. They report that they have cut more than 1,000 pounds of ice.

The first equal suffrage tea was given in Courtland on Friday at the home of Mrs. R.H. Galloway. About 50 ladies came to enjoy the afternoon and learn more about the equal suffrage movement.

Robert A. Walters has purchased the Frank Denk 80 acres farm northwest of town for $1,800. Real estate in Cuba's vicinity is looming up wonderful in the word—demand.

I.T. Melton and Bart Sim-mons left over the Rock Island last Wednesday evening with two cars of porkers for K.C. This was Bart's first trip to the river town, so he had to have an able bodied guard. Well, he got one.

C.W. Sense, having dis-posed of his blacksmith shop and tools to J. Opocensky and Co. (whose advertisement appears in this issue) says he is now pre-pared to do all kinds of building from a corn crib to an immense

A beautiful snow fell on Monday and the school children had a merry time snow balling.

Almost every available building in town has been filled with ice, and the cry is still for more.

Mr. John Gregg, of Farmington township, has lost 22 head of cattle this winter. It is supposed that they were poisoned.

Mr. A.B. Bachelor has sold his stock of general merchandise to Mr. A.N. Stinson, who will run a store at Mr. Stinson's farm one and one-half miles from Mr. Bachelor's old place of business.

The question for debate Friday evening is “Resolved that woman is man's equal, morally

, physically and intellectually.” Everybody should attend as the meetings of the society are very interesting and the question for Friday evening is one that is interesting to every person.

What has become of the company organized to collect monthly payments to keep the public pumps in order? The pumps on the northwest corner have not been working for sometime.

Since the Central Branch railroad has been completed to Washington almost double the number of travelers having the occasion to visit our country pass through by that route.

The home of Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Whitney of White Rock was burned last Friday to the ground. The Whitney's were absent from the home at the time the blaze started.

The Telescope’s editor and County Clerk Perry visited at the state house last week. They found the representatives from this county compare very favor-ably with other representatives of the state.

The Republic County Commis-sioners will receive bids for the res-toration of historic aluminum and steel windows on the north side of the Republic County Courthouse, located in the city square of Belleville, Kan-sas. This project is funded in part by a Heritage Trust Fund grant adminis-tered by the Kansas State Historical Society (KSHS). The project is locat-ed on property listed on the National Register of Historic Places. All work must comply with the Secretary of In-terior’s Standards for Rehabilitation.

Bids will be received until 10:00 AM on the 27th day of February 2012, in the Republic County Commission-ers Chambers located on the lower level of the Republic County Court-house, Belleville, KS. Bids received after this date and hour will not be considered and will be returned un-opened. Oral, telegraphic, facsimile nor telephonic proposals or modifica-tions will NOT be received nor con-sidered.

The project consists of restora-tion and repair of historic aluminum and steel windows including insect screens.

K-State Research and Extension, River Valley District is conducting a Planning for the Future Conference focusing on “Passing on the Family Farm or Agri-Business from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday March 31, 2012 on the campus of Cloud County Community College in Concordia.

The program will kick off at 9:30 a.m. with Keynote speakers Ron Hanson from the University of Nebraska and Roger McEowen from Iowa State University.

Hanson, sponsored by Central National Bank and Central National Wealth and Trust Management Services, draws on years of experience working with farm families and shares many funny, and some not-so-funny, tales of fam-ily farm estate planning. In contrast, McEowen, who is sponsored by the RVED, offers a wealth of experience working with farmers, farm families, and farm entities on the legal and tax aspects of the farm estate plan-ning process. are willing to invest in the necessary infrastructure. “It’s a big deal for rural communities to have high speed internet access if they want young people to move here,” Angevine says. “The young people will create their own jobs if we have the infrastructure.” While pursuing his doctorate Angevine took courses in creativity--which eventually led to his gifted education teaching career. Angevine started his education career at a time when computer technology in every day life wasn’t even imagined. He taught himself technology to do things like help students in his gifted program in Kansas City create music on the computer. One of those students went on to turn that interest into a business, Angevine says. Creativity is not just for people interested in careers in the arts, he adds. Another son, a manager for FedEx, applies principles of creativity to making business operate more efficiently, he says. Angevine exercised a new creativity muscle to learn carpentry and remodeling

skills to start renovation on his in-law’s house, where he and Trudy now live in Cuba. Angevine’s own curiosity about a wide variety of subjects helped him tailor programs for his students, he says, and continues to fuel his personal life today. That trait also plays a part in the ability to make himself at home wherever he chooses to live, he says. “ I am comfortable in the

wilderness, and I love a concert hall listening to the symphony,” he says. “Creative people can work anyplace they wish these days. A little infrastructure goes far. Scientists, engineers, designers, artists, musicians, business owners can flourish if the means exists for completing and disseminating their work.”

Writer/rural areas need technology

Charlie Smies says he’s never won anything in his life.

So no one was more surprised than Smies when Pike Valley elementary student Clayton Carlgren, Courtland, son of Ryan and Lori Carlgren, drew his name as the winner of a ceremonial bison skull commissioned as a fundraiser by the Friends of the Pawnee Indian Village.

Smies, a member of the Friends of the Pawnee Indian Village, and Judy Bryant, owners of White Rock Buffalo Ranch in rural Courtland, commissioned the skull and donated to be given away to help raise funds the group will use to assist the museum with maintenance and upkeep not funded by the Kansas State Historical Society.

“The Friends of Pawnee Indian Museum play an active role in the site’s events and fundraising efforts,” says museum director Richard Gould. The Friends have supported the museum for least 25 years, he says.

financial support of projects, exhibits, and special events, he says. The group also provides volunteers for special events and helps with larger school tours.

“With cuts its budget by the State of Kansas, The Friends of the Pawnee Indian Village want to do all we can to ensure the museum remains viable now and into the future,” Bryant says.

Eighteen people were in attendance for the drawing January 27.

“I’ve never won anything ever,” Smies says. After consulting with Gould, he will leave the skull on display at the museum for two months before bringing it home to White Rock Buffalo Ranch.

It joins another temporary exhibit, Gould says. Currently, visitors can view a display of Kiowa and Cheyenne ledger art, available until the end of April.

“Kiowa and Cheyenne warriors would create ledger art depicting their exploits while in prison back east,” Gould says. “Some of the art features drawings of the Pawnee, who were

enemies of the Kiowa and Cheyenne.”
