Poste Print Festival is a one-day annual festival in Perry, iowa dedicated to the celebration of original prints, the artists who create them, and the people who collect them. the festival consists of printmaking demos, vendor tables for artists with a focus on printmaking, and a concurrent month-long exhibition. members will meet for brunch at Hotel Patee beforehand.

alejandro Ledezma was a rebellious teenager who left home and lived with a friend in the oakridge neighborhood. after leaving, he learned about the art center’s outreach efforts in that community; our instructors present a literary program for young people living there using visual art. alejandro wanted to give back to the community that took him in; he wanted to help. He contacted tracy duran, the art center’s studio education and outreach manager, who in turn invited him for an interview. she was impressed by his genuine demeanor and took a chance and asked him to help the art center present a summer program at oakridge. that gamble paid off: the teachers were amazed at his ability to dialogue and create relationships with the participants. they have asked if he could continue his volunteer work in our next session. rachael Jackson was 9 when she started taking ceramic classes at the art center on scholarships provided by our donors. nancy Briggs, former ceramics instructor in our studio program, took rachel under her wing and became a mentor for her young student. rachael went on to study at the University of northern iowa and earned a degree in art history. each summer during her college years she would return to the art center and work as a monitor in the classrooms. rachael, now 23, is currently a teacher in many of our outreach classes working with at-risk children.

on a sad note, senior curator gilbert Vicario will be leaving his position at the art center in october to become chief curator at the Phoenix art museum. this is a wonderful move for gilbert, and the staff wishes him the best as he moves forward with his career. gilbert added a wealth of knowledge to the programs at the art center and organized groundbreaking exhibitions of the work of artists such as Phyllida Barlow, Leslie Hewitt, and dario robleto. Furthermore, he served as an effective ambassador for the institution around the world. i am sure he will do the same for the Phoenix community. also, the board and staff of the art center join the entire des moines community in mourning the passing of our long-time friend melva Bucksbaum. melva was a board member of the art center from 1979 until 1997 and served as its president in 1988 and 1989. she left des moines in 1997, but she always maintained a strong interest in what i hope was her “favorite home.” she expressed her passion for the arts, for this institution, and this community in multiple ways, and the evidence of her passion is all around us. the art center’s extraordinary collections, our richard meier building, the sculpture on our grounds, and the success of des moines’ Western gateway are but a few of the many efforts of which she was a part. des moines is a better city because of her interest, and the art center is a better museum because of her expectations and informed eye. i believe i am a better director because of her friendship. she will be missed. Single-channel is a program dedicated to the exhibition and interpretation of important single-channel video by contemporary artists. each series is dedicated to a specific theme explored in unexpected and surprising ways by artists from around the world. the exhibition format presents one video for approximately 12 weeks. in Icon, rashaad newsome constructs a spinning, glittering world into which various dancers seduce the viewer. drawing from pop culture and art history, the artist plays with ideas of status, power, and desirability. combining moving bodies, jewels, stylish clothing, and baroque architecture, Icon is a bling collage that moves to an aggressive, danceable beat. Single-channel 5: Dance is organized by associate curator Laura Burkhalter.

Selfie: Self Portraits From the Permanent Collection considers both well-known and rarely seen self-portraits from the des moines art center’s permanent collections through the filter of popular culture’s obsession with the “selfie.” Works by chuck close, otto dix, mauricio Lasansky, marvin Lowe, danny Lyon, Wanda miller matthews, cindy sherman, anthony van dyke, rembrandt van rijn, and andy Warhol, among others, span the 17th century to the present. the early renaissance gave rise to the popularity of the self-portrait by painters, sculptors, and printmakers. in many cases mirrors were used to assist artists in creating their likeness, while in modern times the camera, both still and moving, has enabled artists to create the final work. one of the most recent works in the exhibition is a video self-portrait by the conceptual artist ragnar Kjartansson titled Me and My Mother 1, 2001, in which the artist asks his mother to repeatedly spit in his face for ten minutes. Selfie considers this history in relation to the rise of the self-portrait in social media. statistical sources online confirm that instagram has more than 53 million photos tagged with the hashtag #selfie, while the word “selfie” was mentioned in Facebook status updates over 368,000 times during a one-week period in october 2013, offering compelling statistical evidence of a fundamental human desire for self-representation. Selfie: Self Portraits From the Permanent Collection will include a viewer participation component that will be linked to the art center website. Jessica teckemeyer’s multi-media sculpture depicts animals in surreal, often threatening situations, and touches on dualities in human nature. “the human condition is domesticated; we are animals,” she states. “as social creatures, we combat reason versus instinct. through translating a human experience into the form of an animal, we look at ourselves from another viewpoint.” she plays on the vulnerability we see in “safe” animals such as deer or dogs, and the danger we associate with predators, emphasizing the theme of duality by presenting both creatures in the same work. teckemeyer’s engaging, unsettling art explores themes from primal emotion and ancient mythology to specific current issues such as gun violence. teckemeyer serves as assistant Professor of art at clarke University in dubuque, and has exhibited in multiple venues across the U.s. Iowa Artists 2015: Jessica Teckemeyer is organized by Laura Burkhalter, associate curator.

in conjunction with the Celebrating the He(art) of our Community gala in september, the art center’s first publically curated exhibition, It’s Your Choice, opened to the public september 17. With the participation of The Des Moines Register, the art center invited the community to vote on their favorite works of art from a group of 150 lesser-known artworks in the permanent collections. With more than 7000 votes cast, the top 37 selected works are on display, including the number one selection, Pierre-auguste renoir’s Paysage (Landscape), 1902, (below). this project aims to heighten awareness, foster participation, and grow public ownership of our world-class collections.

Laurel Nakadate: Strangers and Relations, focuses on an unfolding body of work by the acclaimed photographer, filmmaker, and video artist. Using the internet dna testing site 23andme, nakadate was able to identify distant living relatives, who she then invited to meet in a rural location, wearing and bringing with them whatever items they wished. she then photographed them at night using simple techniques such as long exposures, available starlight, moonlight, and a single handheld flashlight. the results are haunting images of distinct individuals, spotlighted against a dark, almost dreamlike landscape. nakadate’s series redefines portraiture, and raises questions about how we define both ourselves and others. this exhibition is organized by Laura Burkhalter, associate curator.

in celebration of the acquisition of Helen Frankenthaler’s breakthrough color woodblock print, East and Beyond, 1973, the art center presents an exhibition contextualizing Frankenthaler’s print. the exhibition includes four works on paper by Frankenthaler, as well as 23 works on paper and ceramics by american and Japanese artists who were active during the 1950s to 1980s. amy n. Worthen, curator of prints and drawings, is the organizer of the exhibition.

in 1972 Helen Frankenthaler was asked by tatyana grosman, the founder of Universal Limited art editions—one of the small group of pioneering publishers who created the so-called american Print renaissance—if she would like to try her hand at making a woodcut, a medium in which neither she nor ULae had worked to date. intrigued, she began to research the methods and tools previous artists had used for woodcuts, eventually choosing a jigsaw as her principal tool. the result was East and Beyond, which, as it became widely known, not only received high praise, but well beyond that, was acclaimed as revolutionary. this lecture will examine the methods and, insofar as is possible, the thought processes of Frankenthaler and the other Western artists who created works with an eastern flavor, also focusing on the prints of the dozen Japanese artists included in the exhibition.

new art acquisitiOn FunD createD the art center’s collection of nearly 5,000 works of art, along with exciting exhibitions of contemporary art from around the world, continue to garner international acclaim, serving as the foundation of our educational programs and opportunities for community engagement. acquiring works for our collections is at the heart of making world-class art and art education accessible. the ability to acquire desired artworks is only possible with significant help. thankfully, donations restricted for art acquisition provide us the opportunity to purchase works that add to the cultural record and successfully grow the collections. Kyle and sharon Krause have established the Kyle J. and sharon Krause Family art acquisition Fund with this goal in mind. this gift will greatly enhance the art center’s ability to increase our holdings well into the future, and we are grateful for their contribution. to publically acknowledge this gift, the art center will name the atrium in the meier building the Kyle J. and sharon Krause atrium. Pamela Bass-Bookey and Harry Bookey, and sharon simmons are among other recent donors who have also created funds to enable the art center to add to the richness of our collections. recent accessiOns tO tHe cOllectiOns
stacy Polydoran has given the art center three major artworks. they are Josiah Mcelheny’s Museum Storage: Please Do Not Remove the Labels, 1994, a wooden cabinet with blown glass and paper labels; Jim Hodges’s Arena I (white white), 2006, a large screen print with 24k gold; and robert therrien’s Untitled (snowman), 1985, an acrylic painting on acid-free cardboard. mcelheny’s work combines blown glass and text in assemblages that often mimic museum displays. these create fictional histories or evoke false narratives. the artist received the macarthur “genius” grant in 2006 and museums across the country, such as the museum of modern art and the Whitney museum of american art, include his work in their collections. Hodges’s screen print, combined with another work in the art center’s collections, completes a pair and exemplifies his poetic transformations, often of everyday materials or images. a recent retrospective exhibition of Hodges’s work traveled to the dallas museum of art; the Walker art center; the institute of contemporary art, Boston; and UcLa’s Hammer museum. therrien’s painting is a quintessential early work illustrating the artist’s use of familiar images that he frequently enlarges and simplifies and places in a new context. each of these works will become a part of the Paul and anastasia Polydoran collection of the des moines art center. raymond Learsy and the late melva Bucksbaum have given the art center Mika rottenberg’s Cheese, 2007, a room-size video installation first seen in the 2008 Whitney Biennial. exemplifying the artist’s unique approach to art making, Cheese
combines the typical view of the farm girl, complete with a rough wooden animal pen, with the fairy tale Rapunzel. Here, six long-hair maidens in white gowns “milk” their hair and goats to make cheese. representing mother nature, the women and these activities illustrate for rottenberg the ability of the female to “grow things out of the body.” the israel museum in Jerusalem presented a one-person exhibition of rottenberg’s work in 2013, and a major new installation by the artist is featured in the current Venice Biennale. this is the first artwork by rottenberg to enter the art center’s collections.

Join the art center for the 15th annual día de los muertos / day of the dead
celebration. day of the dead is a traditional Latino celebration that honors
the lives of members of the community who have recently passed away,
as well as a festive day of music, dancing, food and drink, art activities,
and remembrances for the whole family. this year’s event honors the life
of aurora Bejarano Lumadue, a dedicated community volunteer who was
active in the catholic Women’s League, charter member of the des moines
League of United Latin american citizens council and LULac Woman of
the Year, founding member of “twelve stars,” and originating member of
the art center’s día de los muertos committee. as part of the afternoon’s
festivities, aurora’s life will be honored with a film in Levitt auditorium.

With the last season of PBs’ outrageously popular Masterpiece series downton abbey just around the corner, the art center welcomes back michael Lasser to talk about the songs that reverberated and were popular with two of the main characters of the series, sisters Lady mary and Lady edith. Jazz vocalist max Wellman, and Katy merriman, the newest member of the local theatre troupe, rti (repertory theatre of iowa), will sing the songs, accompanied by tanner taylor on the piano. six years ago, downton abbey’s first crisis began when Lord grantham’s heir died on the titanic. in February 2016, the series will wind up just short of the onset of the great depression. attitudes toward almost everything have changed. many of the changes—especially those having to do with love, sex, romance, and marriage—appear in the songs of the time. Join michael Lasser, Katy merriman, and max Wellman for an hour of songs, stories (some serious, some funny), and a bit of history to bring the world of downton abbey alive through the music of the day. From ragtime to jazz, right up to the charleston, enjoy the songs that Lady mary and even Lady edith were singing.

viDeO iMMersiOn students from the Video art immersion summer class participated in a two-week intensive study where they explored a wide variety of digital media, ranging from the creation of professional logos to film trailers. though the students expressed a variety of reasons for taking the class, including perfecting their Youtube skills and wanting to get better at video to impress their friends, the experience provided them the opportunity to grow immensely and develop their video production skills. in addition, the class taught the teens how to work together to achieve a common goal, enhancing their collaboration and delegation skills. throughout the weeks they created professional logos for a video production company, original product labels, and shot and edited five videos. the videos included segments devoted to their favorite exhibits at the art center as well as a commercial, movie trailer, and music video.

Visiting artist amy caterina and instructor ramona muse Lambert spent a weekend with 15 teens from the community. after visiting the art center’s recent exhibition Fiber: Sculpture 1960—present, the students studied the history of fiber art and learned how to crochet and work with yarn. though caterina went into the project with a vision, she quickly realized the high energy, personalities, and talent of the students was not only going to challenge the project, but her own processes as well. Leaving predetermined curriculum behind, the group worked together to transform what was supposed to be simple bird sculptures in a tree, and began wrapping, weaving, and adorning the trees with bright color swatches, chains, and free formed creatures into a colorful yarn intervention in greenwood Park. caterina said of the experience:

go of some of my preconceived
objectives, work less as an
instructor, and more as an
equal collaborator. the project
evolved and was executed within
an amazingly dynamic group.”

suMMer OF art & literacy
art center instructors spent the summer enriching the lives of youth at children and Families Urban mission, oakridge, and Pace Juvenile center. through the combination of art and literature, the youth had the opportunity to have fun, be creative, and develop a love for reading and visual interpretation. each week the youth were introduced to award-winning books and then created projects based on the characters and subjects of the stories. the projects included found object, paper mâché and animal sculptures, dioramas, and mosaics. the books chosen inspired the youth to explore the world around them, emphasizing perseverance and problem solving, while providing reassurance that it is okay to make mistakes.
MentOr iOwa
mentors and mentees from mentor iowa spent a July afternoon at the Pappajohn sculpture Park where they gathered for a picnic and art activity. after learning about artist Ugo rondinone, participants worked together to make their own versions of MOONRISE.east. january. a second project encouraged them to take inspiration from Jaume Plensa’s sculpture Nomade and create portraits of one another by using only alphabet letters to describe facial features, a project that turned out to be a fun and meaningful experience for everyone. the mission of mentor iowa is to provide trained volunteers to abused, neglected, and delinquent children who are under the jurisdiction of the Juvenile court.

instructOr sPOtligHt raMOna Muse laMbert
as a life-long artist and performer, ramona muse Lambert is no stranger to creativity. she has spent the last three years teaching at the art center. Her classes inspire children and teens through unique learning experiences often incorporating performance and dance, as well as puppet and fashion shows. muse Lambert loves to teach; it allows her to foster creativity and teach students that art doesn’t have to be perfect, encouraging them to break free from their preconceived notion of what art is. For muse Lambert teaching is not only inspiring and exciting, but allows her to have a positive impact on the lives of her students as she aids in the development of their artistic confidence. as an iowa-native and a descendant of artists, she says her job is a perfect fit, that her happiness lies in creating and teaching others how to let go and harness their creativity. since each class presents a unique set of creative challenges and becomes a new adventure, it is difficult for muse Lambert to pick a favorite class. However, Fashion Lab, drawing & Painting, and Build a comic Book have created some of her most memorable classroom experiences. this past spring during her Build a comic Book class, her students spent the entire semester developing elaborate comics, and then worked together to create the covers and an authors’ page, culminating in a digitally published book. the day she brought the finished books in for the youth to take home was unforgettable: their excitement and pride was palpable. it was not only an experience they will cherish, but one that will help them realize how easy it is to share their art with the world.

aMP caMP instructor mia Farrell spent the afternoon with the youth from achieving maximum Potential during their annual camp in late July. amP is a youth-driven, statewide organization that seeks to unleash the full potential for personal growth among foster and adoptive children in iowa. the students created non-traditional self-portraits to document their experience at camp. students were so eager to unleash their thoughtful self-expressions that some of them grabbed a canvas to work on before the activity began. the canvas was a special object to the youth, a real art object, and they each had their own. the work the students produced was joyous, as were the youth; many of them wanted to create “memory paintings” with photos from the week or ideas of what camp meant to them. they were proud of the strong bonds, friendships, and self-awareness they had gained in their time together. the students enjoyed exploring how to make paint drip and splatter and incorporate words into the composition. though challenging at times, it was a fun and powerful experience. after completing their work, they all signed the backs of each other’s canvases so they left not only with a piece of their personal experience but their peers’ as well.
