Hey Sixie Parents! Are you and your student looking for an opportunity to celebrate the end of Sixie Year? Parents are working with the school to plan an event on Wednesday, June 27. If you are interested in helping to organize the event, volunteer on the day of the event, or perhaps both, contact Cathy Bosch. This is a great way to meet other Sixie parents and to meet the friends your kids talk about from school. Events like this don’t happen without a lot of hands on deck. Please come out and help. There will be a planning meeting on Thursday, June 7 at 6:30 pm in Room 119.
With the imminent departure of graduating parent Marta Carney, who has been the central point of contact for many volunteer activities, we need one or two new parents to step up. Please contact Parent Council Co-Clerk Margaret Wood if you would be willing to take on this effort. There are many parent-led activities ranging from field trips to Sixie Field Day that cannot be sustained without a central point for parent coordination. This is a great job for someone who hates meetings, loves to delegate, and wants to help get the word out!

Sixie Field Day

page 2
Entering the final month of the school year, we can look back at memorable moments of parental giving and sharing: the BLSA’s Celebration of Latin School awards dinner, the fall and spring phonathons, and the “Go to Bat for BLS” event. Within these pages, we also remember the many featured parents who reminded us of the importance of BLSA contributions to school programs.
For our final feature of the year, we met up with Marta Carney P’18, mother of graduating senior, Alex Smith. Many of you may know Marta as a BLSA Parents’ Committee member, the school-wide volunteer coordinator, an active member of a variety of BLS committees, or as organizer of the Open House for prospective students and their parents. Reflecting on her years at BLS, Marta expressed particular pride in the work she did to revive German instruction at the school.
“I’ve always been proud of my heritage,” she said. “Back when we started at BLS, Martin Beinborn P’18, ’21 and I thought to start up the Friends of German program. With faculty members Jennifer Kuchta and Dan Gavin, the program is thriving.” She explained to us how she and Martin designed the German program to be a cultural and academic enrichment experience for students. Students frequently get chances to meet with representatives
from the Consulate of Germany in Boston and German businesses, and they hear about career options with German language skills. In addition, every year, German language students can qualify for a scholarship to spend the summer in Germany.
She added, “But it’s the funding from the BLSA that makes this all happen. All of us want the best for our children, and if BLS is going to continue to offer the variety of clubs, sports, and trips that enrich the Latin experience, funds are needed. Parental support, either financial or through volunteering, is so important. BLS is a public school but offers the quality of a private school. Involvement is crucial for excellence.”
Many thanks, Marta, for your wise words and service to the school over the years. With your son’s graduation this year, you’re leaving big shoes to fill in the future. You will be missed.
Along these lines, congratulations graduating seniors! As parents, we are so proud of you. Parents, you made it all happen; many thanks.
There’s still time – before the BLSA’s fiscal year ends on June 30 – to make a gift to support all BLS students. Donate online today!
Upcoming MeetingsThe final Site and Parent Council meetings of the year will occur on Tuesday, June 12. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend. The final Parent Council meeting will be a social event devoted to thanking “graduating” parents for their contributions to BLS. Please plan to attend and celebrate the end of the year with us.
For reports on past meetings, check the SSC and SPC archives.
ProgrammingThe Parent Council is looking for ideas for programs parents would like to see brought to the SPC meetings in 2018. If you have an idea for a program, please contact SPC Co-Clerk Margaret Wood.

Rhododendron in front of the Dining Hall

page 3
Our Spring clean up and plantings are behind us. Now we can all enjoy the blooming colors until the first frost!
Parents have been maintaining the area in front of the Dining Hall windows for years. A shrub here, a new perennial there, plants have been added throughout the years. Now we have a variety of hostas, daylilies, rhododendrons, azaleas, lilacs, and more. With the addition of Ms. Fernandes’ Reflection Garden to the right of the Dining Hall entrance, the urns are filled with seasonal flowers which are watered and replaced throughout the year: pansies in the spring, hostas in the summer, mums in the fall and greens, snowflakes and ornaments during the holiday Season.
Our efforts have also taken us to several spots around the school building: the corner near Simmons College, the areas around the teachers’ parking lot and the teachers’ side entrance as well. Unfortunately, the back of the grounds is victim to the city’s weedwacker!
Students have been watering after school and hopefully other students can earn some community service hours if they are around BLS this summer. Weeding and feeding once a month by the Garden Club will keep the grounds looking great until after the first frost! Feel free to share your bottled water with a droopy hosta or impatiens flower as you walk by!
If you or your student would like to participate in the gardening, contact Jane McCarrick.

Senior Prom Photos
Speaking of gardens: this past Friday evening, parents and seniors lined the bridge overlooking the swan boats at the Public Garden before the senior prom at Fairmount Copley Plaza. A beautiful evening for the yearly tradition of picture-taking and socializing as the young ladies in their gowns and the young men in their tuxes posed for
pictures with their friends who they had spent years with at Boston Latin School. It was a balmy evening by the water as the seniors attended their last event before their class graduation next week. Congratulations to all! And yes indeed, parents were invited to join at the Public Garden for the photos!

Summer Kickoff PartyIt’s time for the FCC annual summer picnic, one of the most popular BLS FCC events! It’s a great opportunity to see old friends, meet new friends, chat with veteran parents, celebrate the end of school year and the start of summer, and wish the best to our Class of 2018.
Activities include trail walking, hiking, mountain biking, canoeing and kayaking, fishing, swimming, or simply sitting around and enjoying nature.
As always, FCC will provide BBQ chicken drumsticks, sausages, and also watermelon. Please bring your best dish in large quantity to share.Food, chatting, sunshine, and nature just makes everyone of us happy.
Park gates will open at 8 am. Parking ticket is $8 per car. Any questions, please contact Julia Xu at 617-935-2866.

There are too many to name here, but they infused every FEqD activity with enthusiasm and thoughtfulness. THANK YOU for the energy and love you bring to this group!
And even as we head into the last month of school, FEqD is abuzz with action. There are many wonderful things planned for the coming year, so please stay in touch by visiting the FEqD website, reading our updates in News from the Avenue, or by reaching out to one of our co-chairs. Our 2018-2019 co-chairs are Orson Moon and Katy Roberts. Our 2017-2018 outgoing chair is Hilary Marcus.

If you missed this amazing event in its first two years, we hope you can join us for the third annual dinner! It is a wonderful evening of sharing and bonding within the BLS community.
• Uncovering Hidden Bias workshop. Tuesday, November 13.
We are delighted that Susan Naimark can join us in the fall to lead this workshop. Chamber Music Night - Friday, June 15 BLS Chamber Music Night will be Friday, June 15, at 6:30 pm. Students, either solo or as part of ensemble groups, perform with a variety of great skill and great music. Student sign-up sheets will be posted in the Music Wing. Admission is free, but we will be asking for donations to support the Roseanna Fernandes Memorial Fund. The fund was established in 2010 to honor the legacy of Roseanna Fernandes, a music teacher and choral director who served the BLS community for over 25 years. Her teaching and love of music inspired many generations of students. Contributions to the fund support vocal coaching and after school music opportunities for students.
Late May MeetingDuring our meeting last week, we put the finishing touches on the Guide for Addressing Classroom Concerns. This document will be uploaded to the Parent 2 Parent folder when absolutely complete, as will the related meeting notes.
Currently, accessing Parent 2 Parent resources is not trivial. To increase ease of access, we are considering hosting a P2P website, linked from the BLS Parent Organization page. We would link back to BLS.org as much as possible, as the goal is to make information more easily accessible rather than duplicate it. Is there information you are always struggling to find? Let us know and we will do our best to help. You request may be more suitable for the Communications Committee, and we will make sure that it gets to the right place.
June meetingIn keeping with past years, we will enjoy a social evening off campus on Wednesday, June 20. We will meet at BLS at 6:30 that night, and walk across the fens and over to Thaitation (map). If you would like to join the party, please email the chair to be included in the reservation.
Join the conversationIf you would like to join the P2P Google Group for crafting the agenda, receiving meeting notices, and participating in the occasional discussion, please begin by filling out the form. We expect a quiet summer on the Google Group, or at least until mid-August. Feel free to email committee chair Suzanne Elsasser with your comments or questions.

106 BLS students ranked nationally in the 83rd annual event, according to Lisa Narug, National Director of Le Grand Concours. Le Grand Concours is a national competition sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French. Students were evaluated for their written, oral and listening comprehension skills in French. More than 75,000 students in all 50 states competed in the 2018 event. 212 students in total participated across levels 1-5 with the support of BLS French teachers Ms. Lapointe-Prospere and Ms. Blackler.
AATF President Catherine Danièlou indicated: French students who rank nationally in Le Grand Concours demonstrate a superior level of global responsibility,
integrative cultural competence, language skills, and commitment to excellence and dedication. They significantly increase their community’s international profile. Their French teachers, whom they honor, work hard to produce responsible world citizens with multilingual capabilities. Le Grand Concours participants and winners all embrace an appreciation for other cultures, strive to continually learn and improve, and value the study of French. We are very proud of them and admire their commitment to both contributing to a better world and serving as exceptional ambassadors for their schools.
For more information about the National French Contest, please visit the website.
While BLS students in levels 2, 3 and 4 took the National German Exam in January, the level 1 students just completed their exams in April. 5,445 students participated in the 2018 Level 1 Exam nationwide.
The National German Exam, now in its 58th year, rewards students through an extensive prize program and provide a means of comparing students in all regions of the US. Founded in 1926, the AATG represents German teachers at all levels of instruction. The AATG is dedicated to the advancement and improvement of the teaching of language, literature, and culture of the German‐speaking countries. Check this link for more information.
41 BLS students in all took the level 1 exam with impressive results! Congratulations to everyone and to level 1 teacher Frau Jennifer Kuchta!
