The Image Award 2019 is an award given to the best brands in the “Commercial Vehicles & Vehicle Fleet” and “Warehouse & Transhipment” sectors.

The Image Award is based on a survey of the brand images of more than 100 leading companies conducted by the Kleffmann market research institute on behalf of the VerkehrsRundschau. A total of 663 interviews were conducted with logistics decision-makers from companies in the industry.

Faymonville has managed a remarkable climb in this ranking since the last competition. As a result, Faymonville deservedly carried off the title “Highest Climber in the Image Ranking” 2019.

“We are very proud of this award, because we see it as confirmation that the chosen path is perceived positively“, explained Alain Faymonville, who considers the title as the merit of all Faymonville employees. “The award serves as an incentive to continue working in a customer-focused and future-oriented manner.”

Faymonville was awarded the title “Highest Climber in the Image Ranking” at the VerkehrsRundschau Gala in Munich. It is a great honour and at the same time recognition for our consistent dedication towards customer focus.

STRONGER THAN ALL THE OTHERS!In the development of rotor blades for wind turbines the trend goes towards increasingly large blades. The allocation of location for such turbines is becoming stricter, therefore existing zones need to be better utilised. This has led to new challenges, for which the Faymonville Group offers suitable solutions.

STRONGER THAN ALL THE OTHERS!

A flexible operating principleRotor blades can be picked up, raised up to an angle of almost 90°, swivelled and rotated by 360° around their own axis using this adapter, which is mounted on a self-propelled vehicle or between modular axle lines. A third vertical rotary axis can even be integrated as an option, additionally enabling a lateral swivel angle of 20°. This option is frequently selected for use in built-up areas.

A unique feature of the BladeMAX is its patented tilt kinematics. Thanks to this sophisticated levering device, the position of the centre of gravity remains considerably more stable than with conventional devices when the blade is moved from the vertical to the horizontal position. In addition, the overall height of construction remains very low due to this method.

Stable structure, safe handling Greater handling stability is guaranteed by the similarly patented stability control system. The data from diverse sensors are collected and sent to the central control unit, which processes them. All safety-relevant information is constantly monitored. The operator receives a signal as soon as critical values are approached. The tolerance is, however, larger than with previously known systems.

The interaction of electronics, hydraulics and visualisation increases the safety during the shift of the centre of gravity when moving the blades. Thus the BladeMAX avoids counterweights which would add on several tonnes of weight.

The Faymonville Group has pushed forward into a new dimension in wind blade transport with the development of this blade lifter.

The newly developed blade lifter with the product name BladeMAX is the strongest of its kind on the market. With a load capacity of 650 mT, it can move the latest mega wind turbine blades in such a way that they can be transported safely and efficiently in wooded or built-up areas, in narrow streets or in mountainous regions.

SUCCESS SPEAKS FOR ITSELF

The German Kurz Group from Friolzheim in Baden-Württemberg consistently expand its services in heavy duty transport since the company was established in 1962. With this development the variety of semi-trailers also grew, for which the company relies on only one supplier: Faymonville.

12

Page 13: News magaine by the Faymonille Group - N 29 - 02019 KNOW-HOW · News magaine by the Faymonille Group - N 29 - 02019 10 KNOW-HOW FOR THE CONSTRUCTION SECTOR BladeMAX: Stronger than

„100% reliable“

The family council is quite clear in its view of the vehicle manufacturer: „Durable, reliable, extremely well made and non-depreciating. For us as Kurz there is currently no alternative in the heavy transport sector!“ The company brochure additionally refers to the successful cooperation with Faymonville: „We can rely 100% on these products.“

Praise that is based on positive experiences in day-to-day work, because the Kurz Group has the right equipment for the transport of crushing and screening equipment as well as diverse construction machines.

Light and extremely stableThe company has two friction-steered 1+2-axle semi low loaders from the MultiMAX Plus product series with wheel recesses and excavator trough. „With a tare weight of just 9,900 kg the vehicle is very light and yet extremely stable. With this vehicle we can move large asphalt rollers with spreader, feeders or large chain excavators“, says Michel Kurz, who also says that the 9,400 mm-long loading platform is a further advantage, as it can be extended by a further 2,400 mm.

He describes the fleet of three 1+3-axle MultiMAX low loaders as genuine „all-rounders“, with which the Kurz employees transport different excavators and pavers up to a payload of 43.5 t. At the end of last year a new 3+5 VarioMAX low bed was added. The decision was an easy one to take for Michel Kurz. „The two predecessor models had already proven themselves through their long service life. Now we needed a rear telescopically extending low bed for large crushing equipment and wheel loaders. With our 5-axle tractor unit we can get even more payload with the new gooseneck.“

More manoeuvrable in urban transportAt the beginning of the year new low loader technology was added in the shape of a 5-axle MultiMAX. The vehicle is equipped with the low PA-X pendle axle. This opens up new possibilities for managing director Michel Kurz. „With the steering angle of up to 60° we are much more manoeuvrable in cities than with classic low beds. And if the transport height of the machine fits, we can even load large excavators and drilling machines up to 62 t.“

Michel Kurz feels well taken care of with Faymonville. „I value the professional advice and speed of reactionspeed of reaction, whether it might be in a conversation or in the supply of spare parts.

How long have you been in customer service and how did you get there?I started off at Faymonville in 1992 as an electrician in the final assembly. Already in that time, while still being in the workshop, I often took care of the telephone service when customers needed help. Every now and again I also went on field service assignments. I moved permanently to customer service in 2004. Here we not only help the customers in action, but we are also the point of contact for technical questions and repairs. How often does your telephone ring in a normal 8-hour day? That varies a lot, there’s no rule of thumb. There are currently three of us here. If each of us takes ten calls then it has been a quiet day.

The standby service also applies at night of course. Can you get up to operating temperature quickly? Most of the time you find a solution quickly and you can go back to bed after a few minutes. It also happens that a customer stays on the phone for 1-2 hours. In this case the night is more or less over.

From low-loaders to self-propelled vehicles, do customers call for all kinds of vehicles. Do you really need to know everything?Actually, yes. You need to have very good technical knowledge. The tasks vary widely and include electrical systems, hydraulics and pneumatics.

Have you always been able to find a solution up until now?Yes, so far. And in case of emergency, we send out an employee employee who finds a solution directly on site.

Customers usually call when they’re under pressure. How do you keep calm in such a situation?First of all you have to let the customer talk so that he can also calm down. It’s also important to speak directly to the driver.

Faymonville’s customer service has a good reputation. Where do you see its strengths? We really are available at all times, day and night. Apart from that our staff is very proficient. We also cooperate with many workshops worldwide, on which we can always fall back on. And we have our own crew of mechanics that we can dispatch all over the world.

What do you enjoy about your work? The variety! Every day is different and you never know what’s going to happen.

The technology is becoming increasingly complex. How do you keep up to date?We continuously educate ourselves! Faymonville offers the ideal conditions thanks to our in-house academy. As a result, we are always up to date when there are technical innovations.

Has there been a call during all these years that you have never forgotten?Yes, indeed there has. A customer called me at 1.30 in the morning and needed help. According to his explanation, I reckoned the problem could only be due to the steering. The conversation didn’t last long. Thirty minutes later he called again and happily informed me that I was right and everything was working now. He hadn’t even considered that I had gone back to bed.

For me, Faymonville is ...... like a family. I’ve never regretted working here for a single moment.

A permanently available customer service 24 hours a day, seven days a week: that’s a promise that comes with an obligation! It’s often Paul Dhur who answers the phone when a customer calls the service phone number. Thanks to his calm manner and the necessary technical ammunition, the 50-year-old cannot be fazed by even the most critical situations. How does he manage that? Reason enough to ask him as part three of our series: “People to the MAX”!

On average a classic A320 is expected to have a service life of 30 to 40 years. The manufacturers usually plan for 50,000 flights. This machine was formerly in service within the fleet of the Russian airline Aeroflot. It even transported the Olympic flame to the city of Sochi in 2014. The last journey of the decommissioned plane has now taken place on a CombiMAX.

Fuselage was 36.5 m long The Czech experts from Pavel Svestka s.r.o. were commissioned to handle this task. „The fuselage was separated from the wings for the road transport“, explains company manager Pavel Svestka, for whom such projects always represent something special. The fuselage, which weighed almost 19 t with a length of 36.5 m, a width of 6 m and a height of 4.7 m, proved to be a big challenge. „With a gross combination weight of about 80 tonnes we set off from the Czech airport Ostrava Mošnov to a privately run airfield near Liptovsky Mikulas in Slovakia“, says Pavel Svetska, outlining the key data of the approximately 200 km route.

Height gain for low tunnelsThe company made use of CombiMAX elements for the composition of the vehicle. Svetska has two goosenecks, 2, 3, 4 and 5-axle units (one of each), an excavator deck and two flatbeds with extension supports. For the Airbus project the transport professionals chose a 4+5 combination with telescopically extendable excavator deck as a connection between the two bogies.

„Thanks to the CombiMAX system we were able to put the semi-trailer together in such a way that the aircraft fuselage could be optimally loaded. The low height of the bogies and the 600 mm stroke of the pendle axles also came in handy for us, because they allowed us to gain the crucial millimetres when driving through tunnels“, says Pavel Svestka, listing a few of the concrete advantages of the Faymonville vehicle. The left and right wings of the aircraft, the tail and the rudder subsequently followed in further shipments. The individual parts were then reassembled in the amusement park, where visitors are now able to eat in a real Airbus A320.

Instead of ending up in individual parts in an aircraft graveyard, an Airbus A320 was given a new task in Slovakia. The decommissioned plane now houses a mini-restaurant in an amusement park.

MSPE MAKES IT POSSIBLE Compact and very heavy: those are the special properties of transformers for energy generation. One such specimen that Groupe Cayon transported to the transformer substation in Gennevilliers for the French electricity generator Groupe EDF (Électricité de France) was 6.4 m in length and weighed 85 t.

18

Page 19: News magaine by the Faymonille Group - N 29 - 02019 KNOW-HOW · News magaine by the Faymonille Group - N 29 - 02019 10 KNOW-HOW FOR THE CONSTRUCTION SECTOR BladeMAX: Stronger than

The load made the first part of the journey by water on the Seine. The last part from the docks in Gennevilliers took place on land. The short route featured several hurdles and the final stage took three days. The freight thereby alternated between low bed semi-trailer and self-propelled vehicle.

The self-propelled vehicle was easy to position„As a 6-axle version with power pack, the Cometto MSPE picked up the transformer on arrival at the quay. Thanks to the overall length of just 11.45 m, we had no problem getting to the ship‘s mooring position“, explains Matthieu Lapczynski, project leader for special transport at Groupe Cayon. „The self-propelled vehicle also left behind various obstacles it on the first section of the route.“

Due the passage of two low bridges, the freight then had to be reloaded onto a 4+6 low bed semi-trailer. Afterwards, the transformer was loaded back onto the Cometto MSPE to cover the final metres. „There wasn‘t much room at the destination. But with the self-propelled vehicle we were able to position ourselves well to subsequently install the transformer“, says Matthieu Lapczynski, describing the final transport phase.

MSPE with a total payload of 850 tGroup Cayon put a total of two 48-tonne 6-axle Cometto MSPE 6/4 modules and two 48-tonne 4-axle MSPE 4/2 modules into operation last year. Two power packs with an output of 129 kW each and side-by-side coupling accessories were also added in order to be able to carry out projects with very heavy and oversized loads. The entire MSPE equipment from Cometto gives Groupe Cayon a payload of 850 t!

NEW FOR AGRICULTURE

20

Page 21: News magaine by the Faymonille Group - N 29 - 02019 KNOW-HOW · News magaine by the Faymonille Group - N 29 - 02019 10 KNOW-HOW FOR THE CONSTRUCTION SECTOR BladeMAX: Stronger than

A newly developed 2-axle low bed semi-trailer has now been added to the range for transport tasks in agriculture.

„The loading platform of the MegaMAX is hydraulically adaptable. When retracted it is just 1,600 mm wide and it can be infinitely adjusted in width up to 3,650 mm. We thus offer a high degree of flexibility when it comes to the load width“, says product manager Rainer Noe of the advantages for the agricultural sector. „Agricultural machines of all kinds with a dead weight of up to 33 t can thus be loaded.“

Without removing the crawler driveIn one of the first missions of this 2-axle variant the French customer Translyre transported a combine harvester with crawler drive. This traction method reduces the ground pressure on soft and boggy surfaces, enabling harvesting even under difficult conditions.

The machine with a basic width of 3,500 mm was transported on the flexible and telescopically extendable low bed without removing the crawler drive. A great deal of conversion work was thus saved and the machine was quickly ready for its next assignment.

New developments are moving into in all industries. Reacting to them and offering technical solutions is one of the strengths of the Faymonville Group.

Great driving behaviour on field pathsThe new 2-axle low bed also has receptacles for widening planks between the outer beams. This creates a support surface for the support foot of self-loading trailers or liquid manure tanks.

The pendle axle technology brings along further advantages. Thanks to a stroke of 600 mm, uneven surfaces in alleys or access roads are easy to overcome. The steering angle of 60° helps when manoeuvring in tight areas, such as in farmyards or on labyrinthine field paths.

The low bed width is flexibly adjustable between 1,600 mm and 3,650 mm.

A DOUBLE CHALLENGE IN GHANA

Even specialists occasionally break into a sweat with some transport tasks. However, the perfect solution is never far away when many clever heads cooperate.

22

Page 23: News magaine by the Faymonille Group - N 29 - 02019 KNOW-HOW · News magaine by the Faymonille Group - N 29 - 02019 10 KNOW-HOW FOR THE CONSTRUCTION SECTOR BladeMAX: Stronger than

A DOUBLE CHALLENGE IN GHANA

„When I received an enquiry for the movement of a gigantic pipe segment in a vertical position I was sceptical, to put it mildly“, says Peter Everett of his first thoughts on a project that was out of the ordinary even for him. Everett is managing director of the Ghanaian company Monpe Ventures, which is well known beyond the country‘s borders for its spectacular transport undertakings.

Help with finding a solutionWith this atypical task in hand, he got in touch with Faymonville‘s team of engineers in order to develop a technical solution together with them. The project featured two big challenges: the weight and the dimensions of the impressive load.

„The 16 ModulMAX axle lines were assembled alongside one another in a 4-file configuration. The load, with a diameter of 8 metres, a height of 16 metres and a weight of 125 tonnes could thus be moved safely“, explains sales adviser Julian Thelen, who has been in close contact with Monpe for years. „In addition, the customer added 44 tonnes of counterweight in order to shift the centre of gravity downwards.“

„I feel like I‘m partof the family.“

Safety on a difficult roadUsing this combination the pipe segment was then moved over three kilometres to the quay. Peter Everett says: „The road was uneven with some ruts. However, the convoy remained absolutely stable and our end customer was delighted.“ Having arrived at the destination, workers loaded the freight onto a ship. From there it was transported onwards to the oil and gas fields off the coast of Ghana.

Monpe‘s owner Peter Everett looks back on a long-standing bond with Faymonville. He has a high opinion of the vehicle manufacturer‘s qualities, which was further strengthened through this project. „What we value about Faymonville is the trusting cooperation combined with the high product quality. It is much more than just the acquisition of a vehicle. Because you get genuine support from all departments. I feel like I‘m part of the family.“

The team from Monpe Ventures (far right: owner Peter Everett) was given detailed training by Faymonville instructor Jef (far left) prior to the project.

With the MegaMAX through Italy

When it comes to special transport, the height of the load often represents a real challenge. The MegaMAX range shows its strengths when the transport process depends on the decisive millimetres. The Italian customer Pacello Shipping Srl uses a 2-axle low bed with low loading height when it comes to passing under the lowest bridges and underpasses. In this illustrated project, the task was to transport a tank weighing 16 t. The freight had a length of 20.5 m and a diameter of 4.2 m. All technical advantages of the MegaMAX were of important influence while completing this task. The pendle axles provided for a proper turning angle of maximum 60° in tight passages. And it was the extension of the flat vessel deck by 4.8 m that made it possible to charge the load.

The development of transport solutions for the glass industry has a long tradition at Faymonville. The first vehicle for the transport of glass panes was manufactured as far back as 1973. Today, the FloatMAX inloader is in operation all over the world and is the recognised specialist for glass transport. From now on as well in Japan, where the first two inloaders brokered by our sales partner Fujishiro Motors Co. were delivered to the end customer Yayoi Kyogoku in Yokohama. The company was delighted by the modern technology and safe handling. The FloatMAX inloaders are used for transport projects with the national glass manufacturer AGC (Asahi Glass Company). The vehicle width of 2.49 m and the two lifting axles at the first and third position are specially adapted to Japanese legislation.

Five steelworks transporters from Cometto for Kilic

Achieving less effort through greater flexibility. That was the goal when the Turkish customer Kilic Nakliyat Hafriyat Lojistik chose a total of five steelworks transporters of the type Cometto ETH 7/3. The vehicles with a payload of 250 t each both load scrap and semi-finished steel products. This versatility allows Kilic to cover many more work steps with the five lifting transporters. The 16 metre-long ETH vehicles with hydrostatic drive feature a container with a capacity of 219 m³ for moving steel residues. Four powerful cylinders ensure a tilt angle of up to 48°. Up to 3,400 t of scrap are disposed of in one shift. The second task at Kilic is the transport of coils, where the new Cometto vehicles move up to 1,320 t of material per hour. Almost twice as much as the previous transport solution enabled.

Hercules Transport from Cebu in the Philippines aimed to move towards special transport in the 200 t payload range. A project perfectly made for the modular CombiMAX elements from Faymonville. In order to achieve maximum flexibility the company chose a 1+2+3+4-axle combination. With the help of an additional add-on beam, Hercules drives heavy and long loads as extendable low loader variants. And with the drive-over vessel deck, high transformers or machines can be carried that would otherwise have to be loaded by crane. The transport thus remains height-optimised and is easy to manoeuvre under the many low-hanging electricity cables. Since high axle loads are permitted in the Philippines, the choice fell on the 8-tyre version with a basic width of 3200 mm. Hercules will order further CombiMAX elements this year.

A development that matches the experience of the Dutch MAX Trailer customer Martens Transport BV. „They originally procured the MAX100 low loader with wheel troughs to transport their wheel loaders all over Europe“, explains Bart Rutgers, in charge of MAX Trailer at the Dutch distribution partner Hertoghs Carrosserieën B.V.

„However, the vehicle has since developed into a genuine all-rounder. Martens now also use it to transport caterpillar excavators weighing up to 35 tonnes.“

AT HOME ON THE BUILDING SITEFor large and small equipmentThe administrative procedure around the transport assignments was simplified thanks to the MAX100. „The customer previously used a low bed and almost always needed a single special permit. Now, they have the lighter MAX100 low loader and operate with a permanent permit.“

THE MAX TRAILER PRODUCT RANGE has been subject to continuous further development in recent years. This opened up many new possibilities, especially for the construction sector. There‘s no longer any way around the „MAX“ on a construction site.

The vehicles from MAX Trailer are characterised by quality and flexibility - an unbeatable combination, especially in the construction industry. „It‘s a mature offering“, explains Bart Rutgers, reporting on the customer‘s feedback: „Amongst other things, they value the low dead weight of the vehicles and the extraordinary price-performance ratio.“

A wide portfolio has developed over the years. „Today, MAX Trailer can offer towed trailers, as well as semi-trailers and low-bed vehicles“, says product manager Mario Faymonville about the variety of products that has been created.

This variety has helped MAX Trailer to leap into the leading group of vehicle manufacturers in just a few years.
