MOU SIGNED – The Parkland College has announced it has forged an official partnership with Keeseekoose First Nation near Kamsack through the signing of a memorandum of understanding. The agreement builds on the college’s commitment to partnering with First Nations in East Central Saskatchewan. Parkland College strives to improve skills training and labour market participation of First Nations members in the region. This affiliation with Keeseekoose First Nation will involve tai-lored Essential Skills programs, Adult Basic Education, and specific skills training designed to link members of the First Nation with industry and jobs. “The purpose of this agreement is to formalize and strengthen the programs and courses we offer to our partners,” says Michael Cameron, director of Training and Business Development at Parkland College. “This agreement will help us improve the way of life of more people across the region.” The MOU will be in effect for five years. The agreement lays out terms and directives by which both parties will work to secure training allowances for students learning on reserve. Officials from Keeseekoose First Nation and Parkland College will meet at least twice a year to assess the progress made during the collaboration. Pictured (l-r): Parkland College Business & Training Representative Ed Hourd (left) looks on as Keeseekoose First Nation Chief Leonard Keshane and Parkland College Director of Training & Business Development Michael Cameron sign the MOU.

Con’t from Page 1.

“The advisory com-mittee we appointed to examine industry-led delivery options for brand inspection has recommended this ap-proach following thor-ough analysis and consultation,” Stewart says. “This is an im-portant service and, as producers and industry are the primary users of brand inspection, it makes sense to transfer it to livestock organiza-tions.” Livestock brand in-spection services, which ensure animals offered for sale are rightfully owned and verifi ed through a brand reg-istry, have tradition-ally been provided in Saskatchewan through Ministry of Agriculture livestock inspectors.

This government role was unique; no other agricultural commod-ity purchased or sold in Saskatchewan has a government service verifying ownership. Both Alberta and Brit-ish Columbia have in-dustry delivered live-stock brand inspection. Manitoba has no brand inspection. “The livestock industry in Saskatchewan is a vital contributor to the economy and brand in-spection is an important safeguard to all produc-ers,” Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association Chair Mark Elford adds. “Livestock Services of Saskatchewan Corp. will be carrying on this important function on a go-forward basis and our members are fully supportive of the new venture.”

The Provincial Gov-ernment will continue to be responsible for leg-islation governing live-stock inspection. The authority to carry out the duties of the legisla-tion will be transferred to LSS Corp. on January 1, 2014. Ministry staff responsible for livestock inspection services will also move to the new organization. The Pro-vincial Government will continue working with LSS Corp. to ensure a smooth transition. “I would like to thank livestock industry repre-sentatives for their hard work on the advisory committee,” Stewart said. “We are commit-ted to working with LSS Corp. on this transfer and I am confi dent they will deliver effective, ef-fi cient brand inspection in Saskatchewan.”

Page 4: News review extra december 14, 2013

Ed, my neighbor next door, gets more irritated with the Christmas sea-son each year. Ed feels that there is always more and more pressure on him to spend his money. Nothing gets Ed muttering more than when he finds out the price he paid wasn’t the lowest possible price. Ed wants me to go back to work at Walmart. Now he has to check out pric-es there himself. When I worked there, he often wanted me to find out what price something was at Walmart. He then could compare it with the price he was looking at, elsewhere. Best part then, for Ed, was when I would buy an article for him when I was working there. Ed gave me the purchase money, but he got free pickup and delivery through me. Ed feels victimized by all the sales which start on Black Friday and don’t even end at December 25. Ed claims that the problem with sales is that to save money you have to spend money. Ed says that, at Christmas, he gives gifts that others don’t really need but want. He won’t buy the gifts they want unless they are on sale, and checking out all the sales is frustrating. I suggested to Ed that he might like to buy, the kind of gifts that folks

really need in the devel-oping world. I told him for $10 he could give a mosquito net. Every 60 seconds a child in Africa dies from malaria. Since Ed likes to fish, I said that for $15, he could give a fishnet capable of providing both food and livelihood to a family. Likewise, for $45 he could give a flock of chickens, another gift resulting in food and income for a family. Since Ed seemed doubt-ful at $45, I suggested a fuel-efficient stove for $20. These stoves use less fuel and cut cooking time in half. Ed said that I should give those gifts myself since I was so eager for him to spend his hard earned money. I told Ed, “We have given the mosquito net, fishnet, and fuel-effi-cient stove in the past, but this year we are giv-ing a pair of goats. In fact, we could give them in honor of you as a gift in your name. A pair of goats means milk for drinking, manure for gardens, and meat for

meals, for the reason-able price of $75.” “Don’t go giving any gift in my name, if I wanted to give a gift I would do it myself,” Ed snapped as he left. The great thing about God’s gift to us at the first Christmas was that it was the gift we truly needed. God gave Jesus, the Lamb of God, to take away the sins of the world. The baby born at Bethlehem means God has provided in Jesus his total love and accep-tance for all. Our total acceptability before God is a gift. Like any gift, it can be accepted or reject-ed. God sees us as totally acceptable and righteous before Him right now. It is not because of what we do or have done but because of what God has done for us in Christ.
