If you need help dial it: 24/7 Sask. health advice The Government of Sas- katchewan has announced it is making access to 24/7 health advice easier by changing the province’s HealthLine number to 811. “People can now access HealthLine for professional health advice any time, by sim- ply dialing 811 from anywhere in the province,” says Health Minister Dustin Duncan. “HealthLine is a key part of our primary health care strategy to improve access to health servic- es and I encourage Saskatch- ewan residents to take advan- tage of this valuable resource.” Saskatchewan joins several other jurisdictions across the country in using 811 for its con- dential health information and support telephone line. Access to fresh water helps to prevent disease, and also enables girls and women to get an education or have paying jobs, rather than spend much of their days fetching water for their families. Highways and Infra-structure Minister Don McMorris is hailing the important role that en-gineers and geoscien-tists play in Saskatch-ewan’s growth and prosperity by proclaim-ing March 3-9 as Engi-neering and Geoscience Week. “Engineers and geo-scientists play a key role in our province’s growth plan, with 1.2 million people expected to be living here by the year 2020, coupled with $2.5 billion in infra-structure investment in the next three years,” McMorris says. “The men and women of this profession are proudly serving this province and contrib-uting to its success by designing new bridges and roads to keep our export-based economy moving, and oversee-ing new offi ce towers, schools and health care facilities to handle the infl ux of people. We owe them a debt of thanks.” Association of Profes-sional Engineers and Geoscientists (APEGs) members make signifi -cant contributions daily in a variety of sectors including agriculture, construction, environ-ment, forestry, manu-facturing, mining, utili-ties, transportation and resources. “As engineers and geoscientists, ‘We See More’,” APEGS Presi-dent Leon Botham adds. “We see the details of the safe development of

our province’s natural resources; we identify the requirements for the provision of safe and effi cient infrastruc-ture; and we see the opportunities to con-tribute to the economic and social growth of our communities. Through their innovation, our more than 10,000 mem-bers are proud to help shape the future of this province.”

APEGS is the govern-ing body responsible for regulating the practice of engineering and geo-science professionals in the province. Numer-ous activities have been planned for Engineering and Geoscience Week to help commemorate the profession, along with a media campaign fea-turing billboards, TV commercials and news-paper inserts.

As more animals are calling Saskatchewan’s prairie fi elds home, one U of S researcher is paying special attention to two in particular: wild boars and moose. “My research program is at the interface between wildlife and agriculture,” says Ryan Brook, assis-tant professor in the Col-lege of Agriculture and Bioresources. “So when I came to the U of S three years ago, I looked at what major issues are fac-ing producers and what issues have the potential to be major.” At fi rst, Brook looked at elk that came into cattle areas and the costs associ-ated with them feeding as well as the transmission of diseases like chronic wasting disease. When he started thinking about long-term issues, Brook settled on wild boars and moose as two mammals posing potentially signifi -cant problems. In the U.S., wild boars are responsible for bil-lions of dollars in dam-age to agricultural crops, Brook explains. “They will eat anything. They are also rooters and will dig with their noses and this causes damage to na-tive ecosystems. Not to mention they are aggres-sive and will harass live-stock.” Wild boars are a poten-tial source of diseases, too, he says. “The outbreak of E. coli in spinach in Cali-fornia a few years ago was tied to wild boars coming into the area and spread-ing E. coli. In Spain, they are a major reservoir of bovine tuberculosis.” Wild boars are still a

relatively small problem in Saskatchewan but their population numbers could explode very quick-ly, Brook adds. “They could be a really signifi cant problem in Saskatchewan. They are the most prolifi c repro-ducer of any large mam-mal in the world. Females on average have 12 off-spring each year and can reproduce at six months of age...” Brook has set up a series of trail cameras around Saskatchewan to gather information on where they are in the province, repro-ductive rates, habitat use and how the boars affect other animal populations. He is also surveying rural municipalities to get an idea of what they are see-ing on the wild boar front. All of this, he continued, will contribute to a better provincial picture. What Brook does know is that to curb the wild boar population, you have to be aggressive. “In Cali-fornia, they kill 60 per cent of the entire popu-lation every year just to keep it at the same level year to year.” Although most think of moose as a species specifi c

to boreal forests, over the past 15 years the animals have been moving more and more into farmland, Brook says. “They cause consider-able crop and property damage. Farmers have reported seeing moose eating fl ax, canola and fi eld peas. They love peas. But most importantly are the vehicle collisions.” Since 2006, 10 people have been killed in Sas-katchewan in highway collisions with moose. Saskatchewan Govern-ment Insurance estimates collisions with moose costs about $3.5 million in damage annually. By capturing moose in the province, outfi tting them with satellite-based collars and then tracking them over a two-year pe-riod, Brook is hoping to determine why the moose crossed the road. “The big questions are why have they moved into these new habitats and why and where do they cross roads. Are there highways that have a higher risk and is that re-lated to too little shoulder cover, or the type of crops close by, or even road salts?”

It’s a challenge: boars and mooseTHE NEWS REVIEW EXTRA - Saturday, March 9, 2013 - Page 3A

Ed, my neighbor next door, wanted to borrow my Saturday’s Leader-Post. He heard there was an obituary in the paper that he needed to see. Why would he buy a newspaper of his own since he could borrow mine? I mentioned to Ed that he could go online and get his information very easily. He said that he refuses to become a computer geek and that computers are ruining the kids of today. Ed groaned that they even have computers at school for the kids to use. I knew Ed was going to say that when he went to school he learned the hard way, as I have heard it before. According to Ed, he learned at school with his mind, and used books, pencils, pens, and paper to do all his work. Today, the computer does the work. It is easy learning by the typing of a word or two on a key-board. “You don’t even have to have readable handwriting, as the com-puter prints up your work neatly every time,” says Ed. Ed knows I disagree with him. I don’t believe learning always comes easily even with the use of a computer. I still believe students have tests and exams and need to cram today. Maybe this is the senti-ment of a misguided old guy. I like the speed of find-ing information on the computer. It makes research faster and more

extensive. That is, until I run into problems and get lost or stuck in cyber-space. Computers can be excellent learning aids and terrible time wast-ers. It is tempting to surf around the internet on every interest and hobby and even get stuck in what would be better left alone. If I was using a computer to do my homework as a student, I would be tempted to use it for fun things rather than my school-work. Computers need to be respected, because they have their bad side as well as their good one. A car can be a safe vehicle or a deadly weapon in the hands of a danger-ous driver. Likewise, computers can be used wisely or unwisely, for they appeal to our sinful nature. On the comput-er, there is almost unlim-ited freedom. Perhaps the hardest thing to handle wisely is our per-sonal freedom. Rules make life easier to han-

dle. Freedom means choices and decisions and the results they bring. Using a computer, we are tempted to choose as we please. Some will always choose what oth-ers are doing. How many will choose to do right every time they are on the net? Paul in the Bible spoke of freedom when he cau-tioned us to use our free-dom wisely and not as an opportunity to indulge our sinful nature. Some choose to use the com-puter for sexual immo-rality and impurity. Some use it as a way to lie to and cheat the unsuspecting. Some use it in pursuit of their self-ish ambitions. Some use it to hurt or bully others. We are always free to love others as ourselves on the internet. Paul calls us to test and approve what is God’s will for us and this applies also when using our computers. He cau-tions do not be overcome with evil.

OBITUARIES

MELNECHENKO - Melvin Leo (Mel) Melnechenko passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at 73 years of age. Mel was born September 18, 1939 near Sheho, SK. He was the son of George and Kay (nee Pekush) Melnechenko. He grew up on the family farm in the Sheho district and attended Pohorlowitz school. At an early age he moved with his family to the Rokeby district. He attended Yorkton Collegiate Insti-tute. Mel worked at Case IH, then he travelled, selling for Sherwin Williams Paints. He married Shir-ley Gehring August 4, 1962. They had 3 children, Curtis, Cindy and Kevin. In the 1970s he owned a la-dies wear store. He also opened a vehicle dealership called Yorkton Truck & Auto Sales, later renamed Dunleath Motors. He spent many many years travelling to Alberta to the dealer auctions to buy vehi-cles. June 24, 2000 he married Carol Miller and they bought a house in Calder and moved it into Yorkton. Mel wanted to spend more time at home, so he started buying cars and trucks on the in-ternet and doing less travelling. He enjoyed tinkering with and selling vehicles, hunting, fishing, golfing, dancing, playing pool, going to auction sales and playing cards. He was a gentle and caring man. He loved his family and would do anything for them. Mel was prede-ceased by his parents, George and Kay, his sister-in-law Sandy Melnechenko, his stepson Bryan Woloschuk and his step son-in-law Darren Schmidt. He leaves to mourn his passing and celebrate his life, his loving wife, Carol; his son Curtis (Margo) and their chil-dren Colby and Breanna; his daughter Cindy Fisher (Aaron) and their children Amanda, Kendra (Murray) and Bryce; and his son Kevin (Joanne) and stepdaughter Josee; his great grandson, Tavon Fisher; his stepdaughters, Brenda Woloschuk and her daughter Amanda and Barb Woloschuk and her children Raeghan and Dylan; his brothers Wilmer and Bernie, a niece, nephew, cousins, uncles and aunts and extended family. The funeral service was held on Friday, March 1, 2013 from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Rev. Molly Kitchen of-ficiating. Tributes to Mel were giv-en by Tamala Melnechenko and Dawnis Lesko. Granddaughter Kendra Fisher sang 'Alleluia'. The interment followed in the Garden of St. Luke with sons Curtis & Ke-vin serving as the urnbearers. Condolences may be left at bai-leysfuneralhome.com. Memorials were to one's charity of choice. Ar-rangements were entrusted to Bai-ley's Funeral Home.

Windows installed April 14, 2011Comments one year later: “The best thing about our new windows is they are easy to open, don’t have to plastic them every fall and fight to get the tape off in the spring. Can open them all year round. Quality is the best. Installation was a breeze. Didn’t have to repaint inside. No painting outside required. We are very satisfied with our windows. What has given us the most satisfaction is that our energy consumption is down and they are virtually maintenance free.”
