The best coaches in world sport know that it’s not always about winning.

Some actually crave moments of failure so they can correct the course and plan better for when a

difficult situation arises again.Ivan Cleary is such a coach. After his side’s 20-12 loss to the Sydney

Roosters at Allianz Stadium on Monday night, Cleary remained relatively upbeat.

“It’ll put us in good stead for some tougher games down the track,” he said.

“All in all it’s another step on the road... we’ll actually benefit from this.”

Many coaches in the NRL wouldn’t have remained so calm and collected.

Many would have screamed, shouted and played the victim.

That isn’t Ivan Cleary’s style.Even when you could discuss referees

post-match, Cleary very rarely did – he remained focused on what his team did

right or wrong on any given day. Cleary’s demeanour post-match changes

so little from wins to losses that you wouldn’t know if he was at a wedding or a funeral.

You see, he knows it’s not all about winning.

He knows that with each loss, a window opens to fix something that could hinder his side down the track. Wins like the 40-0 thumping of the Gold Coast the week prior do not open such windows, and yet Cleary knows his side was far from perfect that afternoon. Hence, winning can some-times be more frustrating than losing – for a professional coach, anyway.

When you lose a battle, there’s every chance you’ll figure out how to win the war.

As the famous American football coach Vince Lombardi once said, “The greatest accomplishment is not in never falling, but in rising again after you fall”.

Penrith will look to rise again when they travel up the M1 to play the unbeaten Newcastle Knights on Saturday afternoon.

The Knights have had an impressive

start to the season and should be praised for their never-give-up attitude, which has resulted in come-from-behind victories in their most recent two matches against the Titans and Cowboys. To win both of those games on the road is certainly a solid achievement and the Knights return home with plenty of confidence.

The battle out wide is of most interest in this clash. James McManus and Akuila Uate offer both stability and speed for the Knights, while Josh Mansour and Dallin

Watene-Zelezniak offer much of the same – probably with a touch more grunt.

In the middle, James Segeyaro’s ability to dart out of dummy half and send defences back on their heels will come to the fore here – he needs to keep the Knights on their toes at every moment and try to ensure a fast-paced game.

One thing that must improve on Satur-day is Penrith’s kicking game. Too often on Monday night the Panthers allowed the Roosters easy field position by produc-ing fourth tackle kicks that had no real substance.

Despite their unbeaten start to the season, this is a real test for the Knights. So far they’ve played the inconsistent Warri-ors and two sides who are yet to register a win in 2015. They come up against their toughest opposition to date on Saturday afternoon.

I can’t see this being anything but a tight game – and Penrith will have to overcome a hostile crowd at Hunter Stadium if they’re to walk away with the chocolates.

FACT CHECK Penrith has an all-time

winning record against Newcastle of 37.5 per cent, winning 15 of their 40 matches.

Since the NRL was formed in 1998, Penrith’s winning percentage over Newcastle has dropped to just 30.8 per cent, win-ning eight of 26 games.

PANTHER RUMBLINGS with the Masked Panther

SEND YOUR PANTHERS GOSSIP [email protected]

» Congratulations to all of the Panthers sponsors who have agreed to give up their place on the team’s jersey for the ANZAC weekend clash against Cronulla at Pepper Stadium. A number of clubs have launched ANZAC Day jerseys but none of them are as good as the one Penrith has produced and none of the others have dropped the sponsorship logos. “Panthers Group has enjoyed some tremendous milestones in what’s been a wonderful history, but none more so than this extraordinary gesture in complete harmony with our five sponsors, OAK, Hertz, ASICS, HostPlus and Lion Nathan. On behalf of our board and everyone here at Panthers, we couldn’t be more proud,” said Panthers Group CEO Warren Wilson.

» Just on the ANZAC jersey, I’m stunned that nobody from the NRL was at the launch of the initiative last Thursday. Todd Greenberg or Dave Smith didn’t even have to travel out west for the launch because the Panthers moved the

event into the city. Surely the NRL should have had a presence.

» Fellow rugby league gossipmongers are very keen to talk about Manly officials be-ing interested in raiding Penrith’s player stocks. Rumours in recent weeks have suggested that both Jamal Idris and Sika Manu are on Manly’s list of targets as they try to re-build what is becoming a shat-tered club. From the research I’ve done, I can’t find any solid evidence that would suggest either rumour has legs.

» Radio 2UE breakfast presenters John Stanley and Garry Linnell along with a busload of listeners will be watching a Panthers training session this morning (Friday, March 27) as part of a special listener initiative ahead of tomorrow’s State Election. Panthers boss Phil Gould will also provide the group with a tour of the Panthers complex. Stanley and Linnell will be taking listeners to various locations throughout western Sydney

on the special bus tour, which coincides with a live broadcast at Wentworthville Leagues Club.

» The NRL warned this week that it will impose heavy penalties and strengthen the concussion policy if necessary to protect player welfare. Head of Football, Todd Greenberg said he was concerned about several serious head injury inci-dents which had occurred in the first three weeks of the Telstra Premiership. He said those incidents are currently be-ing investigated and action will be taken against any club which has breached the rules. Mr Greenberg said that if further measures are needed to ensure clubs abide by the concussion rules they will be introduced.

» Monday night’s game between the Pan-thers and the Roosters at Allianz Stadium was the highest rating pay television show of the night with 264,000 viewers on Fox Sports.

After 11 seasons in the NRL, Panthers prop and fan favourite Nigel Plum will finally hang up the boots at the end of the season.

A premiership would be the ulti-mate fairytale send off for the soon-to-be 32-year-old but right now Plum is focused on getting back on the paddock after a double ankle reconstruction.

During the recent off-season Plum underwent a reconstruction on both ankles. He was due to return to the field in time for Penrith’s final trial against Parramatta in February but suffered an unexpected setback.

“I started running at the start of January and things weren’t getting better when we thought they would. There was an extreme amount of pain. I was hoping I could push through it but it was getting worse,” Plum told Extra Time.

“I ended up taking three weeks off from running, I changed my diet and the pain is now gone, which is great.

“It’s indefinite when I’ll be back at this stage but I’m pretty close, I’m hoping in a few weeks. We just have to keep ticking

the boxes and going through the processes but I’m not far off.”

With Plum’s contract with the Panthers expiring at season’s end, he made the tough decision during the off-season to announce that 2015 would be his last season in the NRL.

Plum, who grew up in the country town of Wagga Wagga, began his NRL career at the Sydney Roosters in 2005. After 136

first grade games and counting, laying on monstrous hits and carting the ball forward, Plum knew in his heart that the end was near.

“At this stage retirement is the plan,” Plum said.

“When I signed a two-year deal in 2013 I was comfortable with this being the end if it turned out that way. I’m at the point where I have a young family and I would love to spend weekends with them.

“It’s a bit daunting knowing from November 1 I’m unemployed but it’s also exciting knowing the opportunities that are out there.”

Plum isn’t sure yet what he’ll do after football but he always envisioned himself to be a property developer.

“That’s the hardest thing, I still don’t really know what I want to do – it’s like I’m in Year 12 again,” Plum said.

“All I ever wanted to do since I was seven was play footy and I have been fortunate enough to do that.”

Plum revealed he’s been in touch with a few club sponsors about doing work experience and he’s even considering becoming a captain-coach of a country rugby league club.

“The future is daunting but I’m excited to start a new chapter in my life,” he said.

KEV’S KORNER

No part of the game has progressed more than the NRL welfare and education programs. Every element of the programs is designed by the NRL to help our

young players grow and develop their potential in every aspect of their lives.

Here at Panthers we are currently running various programs such as the Careerwise program, which is targeted to players from u16’s to the NRL.

This program is designed to get prepared for life after football with either work/study.

We want them to be either in training for the vocation they dream of, or actually working in their desired career.

Graduates of League is a program that assists players with tutoring and mentor-ing while they are combining rugby league with full time studying at university or TAFE. Currently we have six first grade players in this program. Reagan Camp-bell–Gillard is getting great results from the program after taking on a university degree as well as making his debut for the Panthers this year.

‘Trade up with the NRL’ is a program targeted to our apprenticeships, we are lucky to have Nathan Smith as our Apprentice Mentor. His job is to oversee all our junior and senior apprentices dealing with employers, mentoring with the TAFE requirements while juggling football.

Social Responsibilty programs are very important in developing our future stars.

This program attacks alcohol manage-ment, respectful relationships and illicit

drug education. With this training it will result in our Penrith Panthers players being ethical decision makers and being role models in the community.

We want them to be good teammates, in their footy team certainly, but also in any team they find themselves in – at work, or at home or in the society.

We want them to be proud of the game

they love and play. Balanced in their approach to life, knowing that well-rounded men develop the muscle between their ears as much as any other.

The goal of the welfare and education programs are to turn talented boys into men of character and integrity. Men who are all better for having been part of rugby league.

Josh Mansour has been through a lot in the past six months.

He enjoyed a great run with the Panthers during last year’s NRL Finals.

He represented his country, playing for the Kangaroos in the Four Nations.

He underwent two major off-season surgeries on his ankle and shoulder, which kept him out for the entire pre-season and opening rounds.

And he also watched one of Penrith’s brightest young talents in George Jennings flourish in his place.

But now the man everyone calls ‘Sauce’ is back and, boy, is he happy to be healthy and firing again.

“It’s so relieving,” Mansour told Extra Time.

“It was so hard to watch the boys out there playing even though they were doing so well.

“To be on the sideline and not being able to contribute really took its toll.”

Following his strong performances in the Four Nations, the 24-year-old under-

went two major operations: arthroscopic surgery on his ankle and a shoulder recon-struction.

Mansour was expected to be out for at least the first month of the season but managed to make an early comeback against the Sydney Roosters on Monday night.

“We’ve got a great medical team and I am grateful they got me back at this time. I just have to get some match fitness into me and I’ll be ready to go,” Mansour said.

Mansour made a solid return against the Roosters on Monday despite the Panthers going down 20-12 at Allianz Stadium.

He ran for 219 metres and was one of Penrith’s best on the field.

During his time on the sidelines, a local junior with a famous surname filled in for Mansour brilliantly, leaving a very good impression on the injured star.

“He killed it,” Mansour said of George Jennings.

“We always had high hopes for George; he’s always been a star in our eyes. George comes from a great gene pool and he played really well.

“I’m sure he’ll get another shot at first grade and take it with both hands.”

Mansour admitted that he wasn’t too worried about losing his spot to Jennings

once he returned from injury but hoped the youngster would continue to push his case for first grade selection.

“What’s good about this club is we have a lot of depth, that’s our strength,” Mansour said.

“Whoever is out injured another bloke will put their hand up and do a really good job for us.

“When I was in and out of first grade when I first started, all I had to do was remain focused and keep playing well. I had to knuckle down and that got me back in.”

Mansour is right – Penrith’s wing stocks are filled with talent including himself, Jennings, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak, Waqa Blake and veteran David Simmons.

Now 51 games into his NRL career, the former Rabbitohs junior hasn’t looked back, even adding four Test appearances for Australia to his résumé.

The honour of playing for Australia is not lost on Mansour.

“To play alongside those star players gave me a lot of confidence, the experi-ence was invaluable,” he said of the Four Nations.

“You have to take every small oppor-tunity, that’s the biggest thing I learnt. Hopefully I get to do it all again.”

HART TO HART

LET’S RETURN TO THE GOOD OLD DAYS

Do we have to talk about refs again?

Enough already. Surely it’s time for ONE CENTRAL

REFEREE to make all of the deci-sions.

Multiple officials sharing the decision making weakens the whole process.

It does not work. Let’s wind back the clock back to the

good old days of one arrogant referee but bring it up to date with a modern differ-ence.

I mean let’s give our one ref all the help and technology he needs to get the deci-sions right.

Remember when refs like Bill Harrigan

or Greg Hartlely ruled the roost on the field?

They might not have got every decision right 100 per cent of the time but at least everyone knew where they stood and they had the respect of the players and fans.

Let’s look at Dallin Watene-Zelezniak’s NO TRY howler from Monday night against the Roosters as an example.

As the system is now, the on field ref said “no try” which was basically a guess and then he sent it up to the video refs to check.

The men in the box took the easy option out by saying there was not enough evidence to overturn the on field guess.

Both weak decisions which resulted in a weak and what most of us thought was a wrong decision. Under my ONE ref model the on-field ref would not have to make a guess if he wasn’t sure, he could simply enlist whatever help he needed, like taking a look at the video replay himself and then he would make the final decision and get on with it.

Look at tennis, who makes the final decision on all points? The central umpire right?

Put simply ultimate power with one person with use of assistance and technol-ogy will give stronger and more consistent decision making.

WITH STEVE HART

Jamie Soward’s field goal in last year’s final against the Roosters What’s your prized piece of Pan-thers memorabilia that you’d never sell? 1991 and 2003 Grand Final DVDsIf the Panthers won the 2015 Grand Final, how would you react? Prob-ably the same way I reacted after the Soward field goal last year – by sobbing uncontrollably into my Panthers scarf

Newtown have put an end to Penrith’s 10 game winning streak in the NSW Cup with a 16 point victory at the expense of the defending premiers in a bruising encounter at the foot of the Mountains.

The major talking point after the game was the decision by referee Liam Nicholls to send off Adam Docker for a shoulder charge to the head of Jets fullback, Na-than Gardner in the 26th minute.

Docker has since taken the early guilty plea on a grade two shoulder charge and will miss the next three games. With Pen-rith already missing Ben Murdoch-Masila, Adrian Davis, Isaac John, George Jennings and Sam Anderson from the side that ac-counted for the Bears, the send-off deci-sion proved pivotal as the Panthers were unable to claw back the Jets’ 8-0 lead at the time of the incident.

Despite the setback, the Panthers trailed by just four points heading into the final 10 minutes after Robert Jennings and Paul Simona both scored second half tries, before Nicholls’ decision to send Will Smith to the sin-bin for a profes-sional foul sealed Penrith’s fate with New-town scoring two late tries against 11 men to run out comfortable 24-8 victors.

Round 4 will see the Panthers travel to Newcastle to take on the Knights in

a replay of the 2014 Grand Final. Both teams have made key changes as they attempt to get their season back on track after the Knights also lost last round to Wyong 18-6.

For Penrith, Sam Anderson returns alongside another ex-Knight Will Smith, replacing the injured James Fisher-Harris while Andy Saunders will replace the suspended Adam Docker at lock, which allows Liam Ayoub to come on the inter-change bench.

Team as follows: W Blake, P Simona, R Jennings, N Akerpia, E Aiono, W Smith, S Scarlett, S Anderson, A Koroisau, L Latu, T Sopoaga, I Yeo, A Saunders.

Bench: R Coates, B Attwood, C Smith, L Ayoub.

Newcastle come into this game with plenty of talent on show, keen to avenge their big loss to the Panthers in last year’s decider including the likes of Nathan Ross, Jake Mamo, Chanel and Pat Mata’utia, Carlos Tuimavave, Sam Mataora and Joseph Tapine, while Clint Newton lines up against his previous em-ployers. Having remained in the contest for so long against the Jets last weekend the Panthers will need to step up a gear this week to get the better of the Knights on their home turf.

HOLDEN CUP NSW CUP

PENRITH REGROUP FOR GRAND FINAL REPLAY AFTER JETS’ UPSET WIN

The Penrith Panthers have got their Holden Cup season back on track after a thrilling 26-18 win over the Sydney Roosters on Monday night.

The Panthers were looking for their second win of the season after a disap-pointing performance against the Gold Coast Titans in Bathurst a week prior.

Playing in front of a small crowd at Allianz Stadium, Penrith opened the scoring 10 minutes in after centre Jack Nelson barged his way over to score in the corner.

15 minutes later the Panthers crossed for their second of the game after Joshua Jay caught a great flick pass from Chris-tian Crichton to score down the sideline.

With both conversions unsuccessful in the first half, the Panthers went into the break just 8-0 up.

The Roosters headed into the match against the Panthers desperately search-ing for their first win of the year and that was evident in the second half as they came storming back into the game.

By the midway point of the second half, the Roosters managed to cross three times to hit the lead 18-8 with 21 minutes remaining.

With Cameron Ciraldo’s men staring down the barrel of their second straight

defeat, the Panthers managed to regain their focus and score the next four tries to seal the win.

Tyrone May crossed in the 65th minute followed by Braidon Burns in the 69th and 72nd and Christian Chrichton in the 75th minute.

This Saturday morning the ninth-placed Panthers will travel north to take on the Newcastle Knights in Round 4 of the Holden Cup.

Last week the Knights won a thriller over the Titans 19-18 and currently sit in seventh position on the premiership ladder.
