Newsletter 10 Wednesday 12 August 2020 Blue Light Bangers Thanks to the local police officers for coming at lunchtime last Wednesday with sausages for our tamariki. They visit schools to interact and build positive relationships with our young people. Kia ora whānau Well this isn't the way we thought our week was going to go! I feel for all those in Auckland, many of who woke up this morning not realising that their schools were closed. We are so fortunate that we are only in Level 2, and that we had everything already in place to be able to deal with the situation swiftly, efficiently, and with minimum disruption to our children's day. Thank you all for your ongoing support as we once again do everything we can to keep our whanau safe. A special bulletin was emailed home earlier this afternoon to explain the strategies we have in place to ensure everyone's ongoing safety. Last week we farewelled one of our Board of Trustee members, Victoria Denyer. At the end of last year, Victoria’s youngest child left Pahoia so, although she stood down as chairperson at that point, Victoria has very kindly stayed on as a trustee until we had a new member. I am delighted to welcome Ray Gatfield as our newest Trustee. Ray brings with him a wealth of knowledge and business acumen. We will be acknowledging Victoria’s contribution to our school at the End of Year Assembly. To encourage our reluctant readers, we are introducing Reading Logs school wide this term. The children will all have a reading journal, or page in their homework book, to record each day they read for more than 10 minutes at home (this includes any reading done during the weekend). For every five days that they read they will be given a house token. We know how much they like getting tokens, so we are hoping that this will make the pressure off parents trying to “make” their children read. We have recently received our Ministry Attendance report. This is based on the weekly attendance data we are required to send to them every Friday. Ministry guidelines state that 95% attendance is acceptable, 90% is of concern, 85% is of critical concern, and 80% is very serious. The majority of our students have excellent attendance, however we do have a group of children that fall into the 65% - 85% attendance bracket. This has a major impact on their schooling. If a student misses five school days each term, or one day a fortnight, they will miss the equivalent of one year of school over 10 years! The Apata Hall Society are recruiting new committee members. The Society works closely with the school to ensure the smooth running, maintenance and use of the community hall and Apata room. You do not have to be a member of our school community to join, so if you know someone in this area that may be interested, please let them know. Contact offi[email protected]. A glimpse into the learning space of our fabulous Kaimai learners

Last week was the start of Matariki, the Maori New Year. We read a legend called “The Star Fishes” which is just one of the many legends about the nine stars of Matariki. We retold the story, we acted the story out and created some awesome artwork using pastel and dye.

To also celebrate the Maori New Year we shared in a meal together, that we all worked together to prepare: Vegetable soup and Rewena Bread.

Book week saw all our learners being ‘INVOLVED’, taking part in the Book Character Dress up. We were so proud of our costumes and loved writing about them.

Garden to Table was a learning opportunity that we all enjoyed, both working in the garden and preparing masterpieces in the kitchen. We also loved wearing our aprons and badges. A huge thanks to Suzy and her wonderful band of volunteers, for making this happen.

We are looking for a helpful parent who could sew washable masks for our students to use in the potting shed and greenhouse.

Given the huge price increase of our disposable masks, we would like to sew a set that we can wash and re-use, to keep our children safe while working with potting and seed mix. If you have a sewing machine and you can help please let us know. Material and elastic will be provided.
