Staffing changes for 2019 The end of the year will see a number of staffing changes including the following:

Amy Bos has been granted a year’s leave by the Board of Trustees to undertake

some overseas volunteer teaching work.

Kayle Riley’s fixed term position comes to an end and he will be taking up another

fixed term position at Newlands Primary School.

Toby Gallagher and his partner will be returning to the UK.

Zoe Thornton is again going to teach overseas. This time in China. Her time there will

add to a growing and impressive work history which includes Australia, New

Zealand and the United Arab Emirates.

Elaine Cooper has been appointed permanently at her local school in Kilbirnie

which will see her save considerable travel time and regain much valued family

time.

All have made wonderful contributions to this year’s school programmes and we wish

them all the very best for the year ahead.

New staff appointed to 2019 include:

Donna Curran-Green in a fixed term position. Donna is well known to many having

worked with our year 6 students for the past two terms. Donna will be sharing a class

with Emily Osborn.

Barry Clarke in a fixed term position allowing us to keep Erica Leggett out of a full

classroom teaching position. Barry has many years’ experience working with senior

students and most recently held a permanent senior position at Raroa Intermediate

School.

Grace Esquilant appointed as permanent. Grace is an outstanding beginning

teacher with a wonderful career ahead. Her drive, commitment, attention to

details and gentle nature will be a wonderful addition to our staff.

Michael Joseph appointed as permanent. Michael has 15 years teaching

experience and has held a range of capacities including classroom teacher and

Assistant Principal.

Laura Bell appointed as permanent. Laura comes from teaching in an open

learning environment and subsequently has valuable experiences and expertise to

contribute to our school teaching practices.

Any further staffing changes or appointments will be communicated in future newsletters.

WHAT’S COMING UP IN SPORTS FOR TERM 4?

In weeks 2-7 all classes will be taking part in swimming lessons at Keith Spry Pool in

Johnsonville.

On the 31st October next term is the West Park School Year 4-6 Athletics Day. Those

who qualify, will then be invited to compete at the Northern Zone Athletics Day on

Monday 5th November at Newtown Park.

Please remember if you ever have any queries in regards to sports, you can get in touch

with Amy or Zoe. [email protected] or [email protected]

OUR PLAYGROUND NEEDS A WELDER

A couple of spots on our junior playground look like they will soon be needing a small

amount of re-welding, if you are able to help with this please contact Jo in the office on

[email protected].

St Brigid's Kapa Haka Festival / ArtSplash and DanceSplash 2018: It was wonderful to see so many of our students towards the end of last term performing

at Onslow College as part of the St Brigid's Kapa Haka Festival, and at the Michael Folwer

Centre as part of this year’s ArtSplash and DanceSplash event. The students and staff

who have given up many hours to support or for rehearsals all did our school proud.

ONE OF OUR SCHOOL VALUES

GLOBAL AWARENESS Why is environmental awareness important?

In an increasingly interconnected world, it is more and more necessary to

communicate openness to different cultures. Being aware globally means, in fact, to be

very flexible creating a set of values that lead to the understanding of different cultures.

According to research, teaching children about diversity in many areas allows them not

only to understand better those who are different, but they will be more likely to work with

the heterogeneity making the world a better place.

6 Tips for raising a global child

1. Provide a solid grounding in your home culture.

2. Make learning a second language a priority.

3. Take advantage of the vast resources at your local library to bring the world into

your home.

4. Have fun with global food, music, books, art, museum exhibits and friends.

5. Host an exchange student in your home.

6. Travel with your children as a fun yet educational way to broaden their minds.

Great Writing Charlotte! Seven years old Charlotte in room 7 popped in to share a lovely piece of writing she

had worked on earlier in the week. Her story showed imagination and a lovely

use of language.

TERM 4 SUNHATS A reminder that sunhats are compulsory during term 4. Children are expected

to have a wide brimmed hat or a hat that provides cover to the ears and

neck. Please note that visors and caps are not acceptable forms of sun

protection. We would also like to encourage parents to consider providing

their child with SPF30+ sunscreen and long sleeve items as additional

protection for their skin.

PLEASE HELP During the past few weeks we have had several incidents before and after school involving parents

and caregivers parking across nearby driveways, on broken yellow lines, or trying to force themselves

through the cones at school entrance during the drop off and pick up times. Just as disappointing

has been the appalling language and behavior that volunteer parents and teachers have had to

put up with when they have approached drivers to remind them of the rules or in asking them to

move on. We ask that everyone please follow the road rules to help us keep everyone safe. Abusive

or intimidating behaviour will in future be reported to the local police.
