CANTEEN OPENING, OPEN CLASSROOMS and SECONDARY IN-TERM REPORTS A reminder that we will hold an official opening of the enclosed canteen area combined with our whole school assembly and open classrooms on Monday, April 7 from 1:45pm. Parents, carers and family members are invited to visit your child’s classroom on Monday, April 7 after our whole school assembly and canteen enclosure opening. Families with secondary students will be able to collect your child’s in-term report from form teachers and visit classroom teachers if required. NAPLAN Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 students across Australia will sit the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy from May 13 to May 15 with May 16 being a catch up day. AUTUMN MARKETS Our Yr 6-10 students will hold a Kitchen Garden stall at the Wagin CRC Autumn Markets this Saturday. Students will be selling some of the fresh and preserved produce from our own school garden, herb and vegetable seedlings and baked goods made by the students. Along with these items, parents of students from year 6 - 10 have also been invited to supply goods. If you are able to donate produce to supplement our stall, that would be fantastic! Please clearly label all ingredients. Items can be taken to the markets on Saturday between 7 and 9 am and preserves can be dropped to school any time before Saturday. Money made will go toward Year 6 Camp, Year 7 Camp, Year 10 Camp and Country Week. WAGIN INSPIRING OTHER SCHOOLS We can be very proud that our 2013 Resilience Day has inspired Shelley Primary School, their Deputy made the following statement in the SDERA News publication; “The school [Shelley Primary] admired what has

been achieved at Wagin District High School and decided to follow a similar theme.” Thanks to the hard work of Wagin District High School staff and student’s we are able to showcase our fantastic school and inspire others to keep aiming high. Mrs ABBOTT To keep everyone ‘on the same page’ Mrs Abbott has been on leave recently due to her battle with Ross River Virus. Clearly mozzies are a menace! We all wish you well in your recovery Mrs Abbott and look forward to your return.

The High School has been full of activity over the last weeks. Secondary students wore purple to fundraise for Epilepsy awareness, made produce for the Wagin Autumn Markets and organised a Social to fundraise for camps and country week.

As well as all this activity students have been working hard completing required expectations in all learning areas. Students should be finishing any class work that is incomplete as homework. Every student has additional homework that is expected to be completed each night and hand it in on the due date. This homework is given in class by the teacher to assist with learning opportunities and to expand knowledge of topics. The course outlines for each year group and learning area can be accessed on the Wagin DHS website: www.wagindhs.wa.edu.au The course outlines have been given to all students and will assist parents in knowing when homework is due.

This being the last newsletter of the term, secondary staff would like to wish you all a safe holiday and enjoyable Easter.

Attendance: Regular attendance (90% - 100%) has improved this term from 53% in Semester 2, 2013 to 70%. 25% of our students have had 100% so far this term. 48% of the absences recorded has been authorised. Please ensure that when your children are absent from school, there is a reason provided for their absences. Research confirms that to maximize your child’s learning successes, they need to attend school 90% of the time. Regular attendance enables children to build upon their knowledge and skills every day. Children who miss out on the basic skills may experience difficulties later on due to gaps in their learning. Regular attendance helps students to develop confidence in areas such as social skills, organisation and teamwork. The law requires students to attend school from Pre-Primary to the year in which they turn 17. Once a Kindy student is enrolled it is expected that they attend school regularly.

Super Readers Congratulations to the following students who have been reading regularly at home; Narridy, Emmerson,

Patrick, Michael, Sarah, Tiana, Olivia, Toby, Holly, Ella, Tamsin, Paige, Kody, Leila, Millie, Ethan, Adia, Tabitha, Zac, Angus, Hayley, Bryce, Kynan, Keira, Katrina, Quinten, Kandra, Sasha, Caleb, Edwina, Claire, Danielle, Bailey, Rico, Zoe, Jax, Halle, Oliver and Talegan.

Don’t forget Crunch & Sip in the school bag every day… CRUNCH: Easy-to-eat seasonal fruit such as a small apple, a container with hulled strawberries, a mandarin or banana OR Vegetables such as carrot or celery sticks, cherry tomatoes or snow peas AND SIP: A clean, clear water bottle filled with plain water

Following the Assembly all students will return to their classes to conduct our Open Classrooms. Secondary students’ parents/carers will be able to visit teachers in their class or form rooms and collect their child’s interim report. Parents will also have the opportunity to discuss their child’s report with teach-ers and make an appointment to meet staff not working that day if required. Primary students have organised a very special “Two Stars & a Wish” to share with parents/carers and will also be able to show them what they have been doing in class this term. We look forward to seeing you there!
