Dear Parents, Welcome back to the Second Term. We trust that you had a restful break and that our students are ready to negotiate the demands of another busy term, which includes examinations! I have noticed that many students are not dressed in the correct Reddam House College uniform. I have checked with The Uniform Shop and I have been assured that the Reddam House size 4 7 College socks will be in stock by Wednesday and all other winter uniform is in stock. Please ensure that your child is dressed correctly and that their hair style and colour conforms to the Reddam House Code of Conduct to avoid being contacted to fetch your child from school. Parents will note from our app that we have a term full of events ahead. Our sporting programme is filled with league fixtures and tournaments and we encourage our parents to support our enthusiastic players at their games. Commitment to a team is vital as we are endeavouring from our side to source as many matches against other schools as possible. This will allow for every student to be given an opportunity to represent our school on the sports field. As a result of this, students who sign up for a team sport need to understand that they are signing up for the whole season and cannot come and go at a whim. It is always an inspiration to watch our young students play their sport with such energy and determination John Burroughs, who wrote in the late 1800s, expressed very aptly what we as adults could learn from the youth: Oh, the eagerness and freshness of youth! How the boy enjoys his food, his sleep, his sports, his companions, his truant days! His life is an adventure; he is widening his outlook; he is extending his dominion; he is conquering his kingdom. How cheap are his pleasure; how ready his enthusiasms! In boyhood I have had more delight on a haymow with two companions and a big dog delight that came nearer intoxication than I have ever had in the subsequent holidays of my life. When youth goes, much goes with it. When manhood comes, much comes with it. We exchange a world of delight sensations and impressions for a world of duties and studies and meditations. The youth enjoys what the man tries to understand. Lucky is he who can get his grapes to market and keep the bloom upon them; who can carry some of the freshness and eagerness and simplicity of youth into his later years; who can have a boy’s heart below a man’s head. From time to time, I receive complaints from parents that other parents do not act considerately when dropping off and fetching students, and as a result of this they block the parking area and inconvenience others. Please be considerate of fellow parents and pull into a parking bay when dropping off a student if you come to a standstill in the thoroughfare this has a domino effect on all the traffic behind you. After viewing a picture of ducks in our swimming pool on social media I felt it prudent to give our parents an update on the construction of our pool: the contractor is finishing up the refuse and heat pump room and retaining wall, which he is expecting to have completed within two weeks. BD Pool Specialists will be on site next week to start cleaning out the pool and preparing it for plastering and pool completion. Based on the project schedules the pool should be completed by 2nd week of May, ready for handover. I am sure you are all holding your breath in excitement with me… Our Grade 11s are furiously starting off the second term with their Matric Dance fundraising, please support them in their efforts by purchasing tickets for The Barnyard event on the 26 April. A bag of Reddam House branded clothing was found on the street over the past weekend. On investigation it was found that the uniform had been given by a family to their worker. I would like to appeal to parents not to give the Reddam uniform to their workers without first removing the Reddam House badge or alternately if the uniform is still in good condition please give it to our Second Hand Uniform Shop to sell on your behalf.

My congratulations go to the following students who participated in the Computer Olympiad and received

these fine results. My gratitude to the staff, Mr Thinus Bothma and Mr Rob McClelland for all their efforts in

ensuring that our students at our school are able to achieve these stirling results.

The South African Championships of Performing Arts, will take place in Rustenburg from 1 -10 April 2016. This is a wonderful opportunity and great honour for Deanne Morris, Lauren Bowes, Khanyo Dyakala and Katelyn Gouvias to participate at this level of competition. The Provincial Semi Final Auditions have been completed through 9 Provinces and approximately 16 000 Semi-finalists competed and only 3000 Contestants make it through to the National South African Championships Of Performing Arts 2016 final round.

Aimee Grefen recently participated in the Karate South Africa All Styles Championships held in Durban 18-19 March. She achieved bronze for individual kata in the 12-13yrs age group. In so doing Aimee remains Karate South Africa’s number 1 ranked athlete for individual kata, girls

12-13yrs.

Georgina Wertz and Gabi Otto on Sunday performed a duet in the U12 age

group of the South African Performing Arts National Dancing Championships

currently being held in Rustenburg. The results will apparently be available on

Friday 8 April and, should they be successful, they could be selected to represent

South Africa at the World Championships in the USA in December.

Bonakele Mahlangu U14 and Santhea Sinivasan U16 have been selected for JOMO Regional Trials for U14, U15 and U16 will take place on 18 April at

Hoerskool Randburg starting promptly at 14h00.

Tayla Beckley has been selected represent Dunkeld Equestrian Estate and Spa at the Mpumalanga Nationals next week Thursday, Friday and Saturday. As it stands she will be riding under her SANESA passport number, which in turn means that she will be accumulating points for the Reddam House Waterfall Estate

Mrs Charmaine Naude recently umpired at the St Andrews Netball Festival, representing Reddam House Bedfordview as an umpire, where she was selected to umpire the Gold Trophy Final, and won the prestigious award of ‘Umpire of the Tournament’. She has also been selected to represent Gauteng as the U/17 team’s umpire at the Netball South Africa Tournament to be held in the Cape. This will take place during the July Holidays.

WELL DONE! WE ARE PROUD OF YOU MRS NAUDE!!

This was the site that greeted me as I arrived at my Grade 10 AP lesson a few weeks ago. A group of students debating and

discussing the correct method of solving a fairly complicated question. In fact, they were so involved in their debate that they did not even see me enter the room or take the photo! And this is what Advanced Programme Maths is all about: stretching students to think differently, to question one another’s methods, and often, to figure out why their choice of method is not giving them the desired answer. The grade 10 AP Maths students have spent their Thursday afternoons solving complicated algebraic fractions, factorising cubic expressions and mastering the feared topic - partial fractions. They have discovered new techniques and have survived their first, very nerve-wracking term test. One thing is sure, all the students have now realised that taking Advanced Programme Maths is not for the faint-hearted. Your hunger for solving questions (that you have never seen before) should be bigger than your fear of not getting it right! Those who are succeeding are fast getting addicted to that wonderful feeling of success, and knowing that they have discovered a talent within themselves. I look forward to spending many more challenging Thursday afternoons with my fearless AP students! Vanessa Rudmann

The EMS classrooms of 2016, have been busy with a critique of the National Budget. Students were asked to research the 2016 National Budget and provide two viable changes that they thought would better serve the country. Students had to then present their findings in the form of a speech. Various interesting points were made by students

and the debates that followed were very insightful and bodes well for the future leaders of our country Viven Naidoo

On the last day of Term 1, the Grade 12 Social Portfolio organised a picnic for the Grade 7 students. Assisted by the other Grade 12 leaders, the Social Portfolio put together a lovely event. Each Grade 7 student was allocated a Grade 12 buddy, who would support them throughout the school year. The Grade 7s participated in some exciting activities in their buddy groups, and then had a delicious picnic. Thank you to Ms Williams, Ms Roberts, Mrs Marais and Ms Slabber for also attending and supervising the event
