Dear Parents and Caregivers Lovely to have some sunny weather finally so let’s hope it continues through to Friday and the weekend beyond. Ag Day is a significant day in Pongakawa School life and is one many students ( and their families ) look forward to with anticipation. This type of occasion seems to be diminishing and is in danger of being lost altogether in many schools which I think is sad. Some would say it is the encroachment of urban spread into our rural areas and others would say it is just convenient to let it go. School is far more than simply coming to school to learn a series of core subjects, it is about life learning, friendships, communicating, understanding tradition, history and culture and most importantly of all having fun. I think schools should try to hang onto days like these and if necessary find ways to modify them keeping to the theme but ensuring everyone can take part in some way. It will always be a core part of who we are at Pongakawa, of that I am sure. Huge congratulations to all those who have made the ‘Made Award’ Finals. This is an annual competition celebrating film and media and has grown from a local event to one schools from across the country now enter. We have three quality entries which are very impressive and deserving of their place and these are: Room 15 – One Call Away Pongakawa Film and Media Club – Saving Kiwis The Bee Team – The Bees Demise We wish you all the best for the Finals and congratulate you on your results to date. I had some lovely feedback last week from a new parent whose young daughter travelling for the first time on the bus had missed her stop. The little girl was walked back to her waiting Dad by a group of our students before they went on home themselves. Thanks heaps Lilly, Tane and Sharon Thorpe it was an awesome thing to do and very much appreciated. I was sent a report about our school student attendance in term two which is something the Ministry now do and would like to give you a little feedback. Our average attendance for all students across the term was 92% (91.9 to be exact). This might seem at first glance like a pretty good result and certainly if it were a test I think most of us would be pretty happy. However if we look at the number of days that would mean any one child has away from school, it would be around 18. Put another way it is 3 and a half weeks of school or a good third of a term. To make the best possible progress our children need to be at school as much as possible and this length of time off is not okay. If we understand that this is an average of all students it means some children had a lot more time off school than this and it is only those continually attending who bring the total up. I would urge all parents to make as a priority ensuring you child is here every day before school begins ready to start and enjoy their learning. Have a fantastic week. See you at Ag.
