Kiwetin News Basketball Tournament

Kiwetin Saints Boys & Girls Basketball Teams

Our Saints girls and boys basketball teams put forth

their best efforts at the recent English Catholic Cen-

tral School Tournament.

Both teams enjoyed very spirited and entertaining games. Some of

our students had siblings and relatives, who attend TDSS, stop by on

their spares and lunch to watch and cheer our teams! It was fantastic

to know that former Kiwetin students show great support to our cur-

rent students. In addition to TDSS students, some community mem-

bers were able to catch some of our games as well.

Our Saints played very energetic games and exhibited great sportsmanship. We even enjoyed some light-

hearted moments when we scooped up the ball and scored unimpeded by the opponents (their defence did

not block our shot since we were shooting at our own net!!).

As the basketball season winds down, our athletes are looking forward to the upcoming track & field season

in 2011.

Thank you to all our student-athletes for their commitment to themselves, their teammates and our school

and thank you for the excellent manner in which you represented our school and community during not only

the ECCS tournament but throughout the year.

Thank you from the Kiwetin Saints Basketball Coaches,

Carrie McAnaul, Kevin Jamieson & Craig Perry

The students are proud of their work

and we encourage you to see this love-

Financial Update The finance department is presently working on the year end March 31, 2011. For last fiscal year

2010/2011 TFN will be implementing changes in the presentation of the audit. We will be including TCA (Tangible Capital Assets) requested by INAC. Our balance with District School Board One at March 18, 2011 was $944,993.21. We have made two substantial payments for DSB in the

amount $500,000 and $300,000 at March 31, 2011, so the remaining balance is $133,993.21 and one bill to follow in May. We managed successfully to make these payments by collecting money

from our Accounts Receivable which included (DIAND, CMHC and the insurance - Construction of Police Station).

Meagan Wabie is away this week on ACCPAC training for Accounts Receivable. Angie Polson is in her last week of class at Northern College. She is also taking ACCPAC training in May and will be

returning to Northern Collge in the fall. I'm very happy to say that Finance has made many changes including updating the TFN Financial

Policy. We are gearing up for another prosperous year. Kelly Bahm

Update from the Housing Department I officially started working as Housing Administrator on November 6, 2010. The housing needs and demands in the community are very high with the constant request for repairs. The following

is a list of what I’ve been doing since I started; Planning and organizing the clerical aspects of the department, this includes filing

Meetings with the Housing Committee to make amendments to the housing by-law (will be pre-senting the changes to Council then to the Community) Familiarizing myself with the different programs and projects

Committee meetings regarding the issues surrounding homelessness in the community Sending registered letters for overdue accounts (rent arrears)

Making payment agreements for overdue accounts (rent arrears) Attended regular Directors/Managers - staff meetings Finalizing retrofit “B” project

Training with representatives from CMHC Attended a workshop in Montreal in November sponsored by AFNQL. The workshop was to in-

troduce the participants to the Regional Tripartite Committee and an action plan was presented for 2010-2011 fiscal year. Different presentations were given to the assembly from INAC, CMHC throughout the 2 days such as; ministerial loan guarantees program, homeownership,

the benefits of developing a community housing plan and support for on-reserve homeowner-ship

Working with the maintenance/repairs department on a daily basis As you can see it’s been very busy and challenging. I get a lot of support from my supervisor and

the rest of the staff including the maintenance guys.

Home Maintenance Tips for Spring

Spring is the time to asses winter damage, start repairs and prepare for warmer months. In-

specting your home on a regular basis and following good maintenance practices are the best ways

to protect your investment in your home. A regular schedule of seasonal maintenance can put a stop to the most common – and most costly problems, before they occur. By following these

maintenance tips, you will ensure how to keep your home a safe and healthy place to live. Clean windows, screens and hardware, and replace storm windows with screens. Check screens first and repair or replace as needed.

Shut down and clean furnace humidifier, and close the furnace humidifier damper on units with central air conditioning.

Check air conditioning system and have serviced every two or three years. Clean or replace air conditioning filter, if applicable. Examine the foundation wall for cracks, leaks or signs of moisture, and repair as required. Re-

pair and paint fences as necessary. Re-level any exterior steps or decks which moved due to frost and settling.

Check eaves troughs and downspouts for loose joints and secure attachment to your home, clear any obstructions, and ensure water flows away from your foundation. Open valve to outside hose connection after all danger of frost has passed.

Undertake spring landscape maintenance and, if necessary, fertilize young trees.

Aboriginal Inland Habitat Program (A.I.H.P) Kwe Kwe

We, the Aboriginal Inland Habitat Program (A.I.H.P) team, have been developing capacity and par-ticipating in matters related to the conservation and protection of fish habitat. Workshops and

trainings that we have attended have enabled us to teach the youth through the Youth Engagement Strategy (Y.E.S) about fish habitat management. The Y.E.S program allows us to take the youth

on educational field trips and do presentations in the classroom. To date we have been to Hill’s Lake Fish Hatchery and the Recreau-des-Quinze hiking trails for a nature walk. For our next learning adventure we have planned a tour of Hydro Quebec! More de-

tails will follow in Kiwetin School Notes.

Hand-Held Cell Phones While Driving

Hand-Held Cell Phone

Since April 1, 2008, use of any type of hand-held device with a telephone function has been prohi-

bited while driving.

The law bans use of any type of device with a telephone function that can connect to a telephone

network, whether or not it has been activated. These include:

conventional cell phones;

wireless information devices (BlackBerry);

cell phones with a transmitter-receiver function (walkie-talkie), such as the TELUS Mike or cell

phones that are linked to the 10-4 service provided by Bell. This type of device is prohibited,

even if the cell phone function has been deactivated;

devices that display emails or that enable a user to browse the Internet.

This ban does not apply to drivers of emergency vehicles in the performance of their duties. (For

example: police, firefighter, ambulance vehicles or any vehicle identified by the SAAQ as an emer-

gency vehicle.)

Simply holding this type of device in your hand while driving, regardless of use, is an offence.

A “hand-held device” means one where the entire device is held in the hand to make a call.

Penalties

Use of any type of hand-held device with a telephone function has been prohibited while driving.

Committing an offence under this law will result in the following:

a $ 80 to $100 fine;

3 demerit points.

Other fees may be added to the fine provided under the Highway Safety Code (contribution to the

IVAC crime victims compensation program, registry fees, etc.).
