Cenit´s Bionic toolset for CatiaTo support the designer to create the final design, a function for feature recognition based on a catalogue of parameterized biomimetic features is under development. The toolset will assist the designer in the design interpretation and final design phase a n d d u r i n g m a n u f a c t u r i n g preparation. Several biomimetic features are defined and modelled in CATIA. These biomimetic and parametric features are available for the designer in a “Bionic Catalogue”. The catalogue is prepared for manual use in CATIA V5 and the new 3D Experience (3DX) platform. The most ambitious part of the development is the feature recognition. This tool will automatically recognize features, stored in the “Bionic Catalogue”, in the ou tpu t o f the topo logy optimization. After identification of the feature, it will be instantiated automatically from the catalogue. The positioning and the adaption of the parameters to the actual environment will be done also automatically.

In the further design process, the features can be altered manually. Furthermore, the generation of support structures and the slicing of the part are assisted. This includes also the generation of machine specific data for the ALM machine.

Influence of Laser Beam Profile on Laser Beam Melting ProcessFrom the seventh to the tenth of october this year the ICALEO conference will take place in Orlando. The IAPT will present the results of the investigations concerning the influence of the laser beam profile on the LBM process.Additive Manufacturing Volume 28in the 28th issue of the journal additive manufacturing the IAPT together with the RMIT of the university of Australia has published an article about the packing density and the actual layer thickness in the LBM process. Bionic Aircraft image filmAt the end of August the Bionic Aircraft image film was released. It offers a great overview of the project and first highlights of the results. You can find it on the project homepage as well as on our Twitter account.

Final meeting and Dissemination eventSince the project ends in August 2019 there will be a Review meeting on 25 September in Hamburg. The meeting will be followed by a final dissemination event on 26 September at IAPT, to present the Bionic Aircraft results to the interested public.
