July 2021

July is often a quieter month in the life of a

congregation. Not so this year for Congregation Kneseth Israel. This year July is a time for everything, in keeping with this coming year’s study theme.

It is a time for study, life long learning. Consider joining Torah Study or a Hebrew class. Join us for Java and Jews, on Zoom or in person.

It is time for meaningful observance. It is a time to celebrate. In addition to our usual Friday night services at

5:30PM and our Shabbat morning services at 9:30 AM, in person or on Zoom, you have the opportunity to celebrate two B’nei Mitzvah. Elijah’s on the 17th and Sam’s on the 24th.

While we are celebrating, it is a time to build community. A time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing. For over a year there has been no hugging or kissing at CKI. Now some people may be ready for a return to hugging. Just ask first—people's

I would like to let all of you know how honored I am that you have placed your

trust in me to lead CKI. I hope that I will be able to meet your expectations. I want to thank Risa for her leadership for the past two years, and I am relieved that she will be here as Past President, with her knowledge and experience. As I take the reins, I will always strive to do what is best for the common good to maintain and grow the CKI community. From my first introduction to CKI five years ago, I was amazed with its extraordinary diversity and inclusion, from the very young to the mature and

experienced. It is important to me to ensure that CKI continues to be a safe and comfortable place for all and a leader in the Elgin community. Going forward, I look to all of you, Rabbi Margaret, the amazing Board and officers, and cadre of Past Presidents to keep me on track and to support the CKI pillars of Lifelong Learning, Meaningful Observance, Embracing Diversity and Building Community. comfort level varies greatly. It is part of our embracing diversity. “Can I give you hug” is certainly permissible language.

It is a time to mourn and a time to dance. We will be marking Tisha B’av on the morning of July 18th. This observance marks the destruction of both Holy Temples. After Tisha B’Av comes Tu B’av, the day of Jewish love—a time to actually dance. More details on that will follow. It is also the beginning of the High Holy Day preparation period as we come out of mourning.

It is a time to plant and a time to pluck. Come help with the community garden! It is sprouting lots of good veggies. Or volunteer to water it.

It is a time to break down and a time to build up. This is a time of rebuilding as we come out of the pandemic. What are your visions of

the future of CKI? What is it you want to keep? What is it you want to try now? How will the world change for the better? And Judaism and CKI?

A time to gather stones together. One project of mine, always on the back burner, has been to build a labyrinth. So, while you are traveling, if you are travelling, when you see a wonderful rock, bring it home. You can paint it or not. When we have gathered enough stones, then use those rocks to build a labyrinth.

However, you spend your summer months, it is a time to embrace your Judaism. I swear it’s not too late. (Cue echoes of the Byrds’ song, “Turn, Turn, Turn” here!) Have fun. Remain vigilant and be safe.

COVID-19 ICU Director Shares Lessons Learned at Hadassah

In honor of this year’s World Health Day on April 7, Prof. Sigal Sviri, director of the Hadassah Medical

Organiza-tion’s COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU), shared seven lessons she and her colleagues have learned

during the pandemic:

1. Be flexible. At Hadassah, the ICU management team has had to increase and decrease beds in the unit overnight, borrowing staff from other hospital departments as needed.

2. Treat, test, treat differently. Treatments have to be adjusted rapidly as knowledge grows about their

lack of efficacy or potential for harm. “Most of the drugs we started giving in the beginning, we stopped giving by the end.”

3. Invest in the ICU. “Without the ICU, we cannot save lives; we just cannot.”

4. Elective care is not optional. “If you do not retain elective activity, you get collateral damage.” People die or become very sick when they don’t receive treatment in time.

5. Train the next generation. “We need to train doctors and especially nurses to treat critically ill patients.” 6. Families matter, too. In the begin-ning of the pandemic, hospitals were so focused on treating COVID-19 patients that family members were forgotten. Hadassah developed ways to communicate more often with family members and to allow them to visit their loved ones.

7. Success is achieved by working together. “We worked in unison

supporting each other. This was one of our greatest achievements.” Help make Hadassah’s life-saving research and treatment possible. Send a check to the Hadassah Midwest Region Office, 60 Revere Drive, Suite 800, Northbrook IL 60062, or make an online donation at www.Hadassah.org

Yahrzeits

We recall with loving memory those whose yahrzeits are commemorated during the coming weeks, and those whose names are read in the Synagogue at Friday evening and Saturday morning Shabbat services during the month of July. It is appropriate for members of their families to be present when these names are read.

There are two dates listed above on our yahrzeit list. The

first is the actual date of the yahrzeit, and memorial

candles should be lit on the preceding evening. The

second are the days of the services at which the name is

read. An asterisk after a name indicates that a plaque is

affixed to the Memorial Tablet.

Ritually Speaking

I did not expect to be the ritual chair of our synagogue and I am just one of the multitude that miss Dan Knopoff, his smile, his kind words and his humility. Thank you, Dan, for being you and to his family for sharing him with us! We made it --- July 2021. The state is opening up, the restrictions in our lives are decreasing, as we create together a new normal—yet it just reinforces the statement that change is constant. I don’t take for granted the freedoms that our country was founded on. “In the future days which we seek to make secure, we look forward to a world founded upon four essential human freedoms: freedom of speech and expression; freedom of every person to worship God in their own way; freedom from want which will secure to every nation a healthy peacetime life for its inhabitants; freedom from fear everywhere in the world…”Our 32nd President, Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

I believe we live in the greatest country on earth—freedom is one of the core ideologies that America was founded on. Yet, every generation has had to endure challenges which test our humanity. Covid -19 was one of these tests which took away our everyday freedoms. It has taken sacrifice, along with tough decisions, to get back on the road where we can once again pursue our hopes and dreams.

Lastly I want to share my observation/opinion that the leaders of CKI have been extremely diligent in asking the hard questions, listening to so many with a multitude of different opinions and then formulating an action plan that they felt best to achieve health/well-being for our CKI family. These decisions have allowed services to continue, life cycles to be experienced, along with continuing education. Those tough decisions that they made did not always agree with you, but I hope that you can take the time to thank those individuals whom you have entrusted to lead CKI. We are truly blessed! THANK YOU!

Elijah James Morgan will be called to the Torah as Bar Mitzvah on July 17, 2021. Elijah is currently a 7th grade student at Dundee Middle School. He enjoys a competitive lifestyle both as a striker for the travel soccer team: Liverpool F.C. International Academy and as a member of the DMS Robotics Team. Elijah also occupies himself by playing violin, exploring nature, coming up with creative solutions to the world’s problems and tinkering with anything he’s allowed to take apart. Elijah’s parents, James and Kara Morgan and younger brother, Ezra, are very excited to share this special moment with him. Aside from his household, Elijah is supported by many family members and friends from near and far that have been eagerly awaiting this day. Having attended classes at the Temple since preschool, Elijah has a strong attach-ment to the CKI community and is proud to have reached this milestone here as he has come to consider the building a second home. While many things have changed over the years, the inclusive and loving culture of the congregation has not. The Morgan family would like to thank everyone in the congregation for their continued support that has contributed to the success of Elijah’s big achievement. It truly took a village. Please mark your calendar and join us as Elijah becomes Bar Mitzvah on July 17th!

Samuel Simon Friedman will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, July 24. Samuel is soon to

be an 8th grader at Tefft Middle School, where his favorite subjects are Speech and Debate, Interactive Media and Science. He is a passionate video gamer with a fascination for how this form of entertainment is produced, and he enjoys creating unique online memes as well as content for YouTube. His creativity blends electronic media with the ethos of modern culture and is periodically expressed through the form of slightly overfed pugs. Sharing this special occasion with Samuel are his proud parents Brock and Theresa and his sister Abigail. Also sharing this wonderful day are his Grandmother Deborah Arendt, Grandmother Joyce Friedman and Grandfather Richard Friedman. From his Jewish education and his study for his Bar Mitzvah, Samuel has developed a deeper interest in Torah. Recently he discovered the Talmud and is intrigued to learn more.

For my Bar Mitzvah Project, I am participating in the FUNraise for Heart event in support of the American Heart & Stroke Association in memory of my grand-father Philip Arendt, alay ha-shalom. My goal is to walk 100,000 steps by July 24, 2021. As of June 18, I have walked 66,500 steps! I hope to raise $250 or more. Please help me reach my goal by supporting my fundraising efforts with a donation today. Your tax-deductible gift will make a difference in the lives of many! It is faster and easier than ever to support the fight against heart disease and stroke - America's No. 1 and No. 4 causes of death. You can make your donation online by clicking the donation link: www2.heart.org/goto/Sam4GrandpaPhil

Any amount helps. I am grateful for your support!
