The TUHH has won the 2015 Premium-D-A-CH 2015 alumni award for its TU & YOU initiative. Worth €10,000, the award is made by alum-ni-clubs.net e.V. (acn), the umbrella association of alumni organizations in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Over 280 universities are alumni- clubs.net members.

TU & YOU brings together alumni, employees, sponsors, and endowers in a lively university com-munity. The initiative is based on a concept that the competition jury rated the year’s best alumni project for its excellence and clarity. DEUTSCHE BAHN CEO DR. RÜDIGER GRUBE KEYNOTE SPEAKER AT GRADUATION CEREMONY

On June 19, around 380 jubilant gown-clad TUHH graduates were presented with their degree certi-ficates at a solemn ceremony. In a fully occupied Friedrich-Ebert-Halle they were suitably celebrated and honored by family and friends for the success-ful work that had earned them their degrees. The evening event’s keynote speaker was Dr. Rüdiger Grube, CEO, Deutsche Bahn AG.

He emphasized in his speech that resistance and obstacles were especially important for personal development. Dr. Grube grew up on a farm in Hamburg-Moorburg and is one of the few top ma-nagers in Germany to have made it from an early school leaver to Management Board chairman. After an apprenticeship in metal aircraft construc-tion he studied automotive construction and aviation technology in Hamburg, took his PhD and went on to hold a number of senior positions in business, including at Airbus and Daimler. Courage, commitment and passion had been fundamental success factors in his career, the Deutsche Bahn CEO told the graduates. “Go forward boldly, dare to do something new, try to get to the bottom of things and be a mode for others,” he also advised the graduates and future executives. His central understanding of leadership was “down to earth.”

To reach the top what one needed above all was to have one’s feet firmly on the ground. “That,” he said, “is why appointments with our colleagues on the shopfloor matter a great deal to me.” Dr. Gru-be also dealt with digitization, which at Deutsche Bahn was being taken forward energetically across the board in six Industrie 4.0 initiatives and around 150 projects. In this connection he stressed that the economy needed young, well trained engineers and IT specialists in order to shape technologi-cal change in the future. The TUHH, he noted, was held in high regard in the German university landscape and played an important role in training them.

ALUMNI WEDDING ON THE TUHH CAMPUS

On May 16, TUHH alumni Dustin Buhr and Jasmin Rahimi held their marriage ceremony in the Dietze lecture theater. They both studied mechanical engineering and met in the electrical engineering exercise. “This is where we first met and where it all began, and that is why we felt it was a great idea to take the next step here together,” they said, explaining why they wanted to hold their wedding ceremony at the TUHH. Jasmin Rahimi now works as a project engineer at Beiersdorf Manufacturing Hamburg and Dustin Buhr as a technical consultant at Salt and Pepper GmbH.

HAMBURG OPEN ONLINE UNIVERSITY: HOW WILL WE LEARN IN THE FUTURE?

From left to right: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Andreas Timm-Giel, TUHH President Garabed Antranikian, Senator Katharina Fegebank, Prof. Dr. Sönke Knutzen, photo: Geringer / TUHH

The TUHH is part of the Hamburg Open Online University, a cross-university digitization strategy, and is the lead member of the Portal Concept and Technology group within the project. The head of the group is the TUHH’s Professor Sönke Knutzen, Vice-President for Teaching. Backed by all state universities in Hamburg, the Open Online Univer-sity concept aims to combine classical classroom teaching at Hamburg universities and the oppor-tunities that digital technologies offer. “When teachers and learners network to share ideas and ask questions jointly in an interdisciplinary and cross-university context, they are already working on the future of learning,” says Professor Knut-zen. The aim of the Open Online University is to facilitate learning and working in cross-university

teams in order to arrive at new solution approaches or research findings. For further information click here.

HAMBURG INNOVATION SUMMIT

One day, three prize winners, 30 exhibitors. On 4 June, 400 founders, visionaries and shapers of the future from business, science and politics met for the first time in the Speicher am Kaufhauskanal to jointly experience live and discuss innovations made in Hamburg. All visitors to the Hamburg Innovation Summit (HHIS) were able to switch flexibly between the different program items. They could experience and try out tomorrow’s tech today at the 3t Expo, then join in the debate at a barcamp session and in between times get to know and network with the other attendees over a snack at the food trucks.

Tomorrow’s Tech Today, the 3t Expo, was very much focused on the three topics virtual reality,

smart tech and 3D printing. Thirty Expo exhibi-tors, ranging from startups to SMBs, showcased tomorrow’s tech today on the first floor. Visitors were able to immerse themselves into the virtual world by wearing Oculus Rift glasses, watch a 3D printer at work, test drive the Egret battery-powe-red scooter, or watch robots playing football. On the second floor technical experts gave lectures on the core topics.

The Hamburg Innovation Awards were then present. A 17-member jury had chosen in an application procedure the three prizewinners in the categories Idea, Start, and Growth. “A prize of this kind gives you encouragement, strength and a tailwind,” said Stefanie Jack of X-Spectrum GmbH whose X-ray camera won one of the awards. A se-cond team received for its “Idea” of an augmented reality system for use in sports training, in this case golf, the €3,000 award and the startup case that came with it. The award in the “Growth” category went to Acqua free Membrane Technology GmbH, a leading manufacturer of hollow-fiber membrane filters for safe and sterile water. After what was a sunny day the HHIS Party went on for hours as visitors partied and networked extensively.

The new-look East Wing was inaugurated on April 29 with Hamburg’s Senator for Science, Research and Equal Opportunities Katharina Fegebank and over 100 guests in attendance. Over an area of more than 800 square meters students now have

learning and communication rooms, a multifuncti-onal bicycle repair workshop, a kitchen and a stu-dent-run café at their disposal. This refurbishment marks the completion of renovation work at the main TUHH building, Am Schwarzenberg-Campus 1, begun in 2012. “The interior redesign of our main building’s East Wing and the creation of new rooms is an essential and forward-looking measure for our growing university,” said TUHH President Professor Garabed Antranikian. “The new rooms enable us to implement new ideas of our own,” said a delighted Labiba Ahmed, Chair of the Stu-dents’ Union (AStA) at the TUHH. The new East Wing also incorporates offices, a multifunctional meeting room, the Career Center and the Alumni Management.

An alumnus is giving something back. The ‘Stiftung zur Förderung der TUHH’ has received from Cylad Consulting GmbH funding for two scholarship holders at the renowned University of California, Berkeley. The two UC Berkeley PhD students Alyssia Novelia and Michael Sankur will undertake research into the development of autonomous submarine vehicles during their stay at the Institute of Mecha-nics and Ocean Engineering. The initiator of the two scholarships was Dr. Steffen Petersen, a partner in Cylad Consulting and a TUHH graduate. “During

my studies I derived great benefit from the TUHH’s exchange programs,” he says. “It is satisfying to be able to given something back and thereby help to ensure that the program continues to be offered.” Petersen studied civil engineering at the TUHH and went on to study for his PhD at the Institute of Modeling and Computation. Before embarking on a career in management consulting he worked as a postdoc in mechanical engineering at Stanford University.

LAUNCH OF THE NEW TUHH FLAGSHIP

On May 10 it finally took place. After months of research, intensive negotiations and a final on-site appraisal in its Swedish home port Stockholm, the TUHH’s Akademischer Segelclub welcomed its

new flagship to Hamburg-Finkenwerder. In bright sunshine the X-43 was named Abacus. For the first time in the sailing club’s history the Abacus will from this season be sailing with a spinnaker sail sporting the TUHH logo. TUHH alumnus and donor Dr. Alexander Nürnberg, Managing Direc-tor of MacGregor Hatlapa GmbH & Co. KG and an enthusiastic sailor, made the idea of “TUHH ambassadors under sail” come true. The club is especially grateful to Dr. Nürnberg and his wife for their generous financial support.

Surname, first name: Ivanovic, Marko Nationality: Serbian City, country: London, UK

Study program/Degree: MSc. Global Innovation Management Year of graduation: 2010

Employer and position: SC Johnson, Senior Business Process Analyst

Why did you choose the TUHH at the time and was it, in retrospect, a good decision?

Studying at TUHH was definitely a good decision. I had the opportunity to choose whether to attend my master studies at the university in Denmark or in Germany. I have decided to attend TUHH study program as I believed it will give me the opportuni-ty to truly meet and learn about German culture and to have the opportunity to learn the langua-ge. Moreover, knowing that TUHH is a “young” university, I expected that it will excel all the other universities from the region.

Do you recall the first impression that the TUHH made on you?

The university campus is a very modern place with a lot of open spaces and well organized. I liked the in-frastructure, but also the way classes were organized and topics we covered.

Where in Harburg did you spend your spare time?

We had a lot of fun in our student dormitory where we organized many unforgettable parties.

How, in a nutshell, would you describe your time at the TUHH?

Although quite far away from the Hamburg city centre, Harburg was a nice and quiet place to live, learn about German culture and enjoy the stu-denthood at the university.

Where do you live now, what do you like there and what is the biggest difference to Hamburg?

I live now in London, UK. What amazes me here is the possibility to meet so many people with diffe-rent cultural backgrounds and experiences. What I miss from Hamburg is the structured and neat German lifestyle.

PORTRAIT OF AN ALUMNUS: MARKO IVANOVIC

What are you doing now and did your studies at TUHH help?

I joint TUHH having a strong IT background, with a mission to gain some theoretical and practical experience in management and business topics. TUHH helped me to learn a lot about the business and management which I apply now on daily bases at my work. My current responsibilities are facilita-tion of process improvement initiatives within my company and managing IT projects.

What are your personal tips for a good career entry in your industry?

Be open-minded, be bold and courageous – it is all in the attitude and personality. Companies will hire you despite your lack of experience and will decide to give up on you if they don’t like you. In addition, prior to your graduation make sure you take part in as many practical projects as possible, acquire as many skills as possible, and experience as many things as possible. Finally, don’t be afraid to seek advice, not from friends of your own age, but from fellow-students who are a bit older.

How does a typical day of work looks like and which expertise do you need for this?

There is no such thing as a typical day in the modern business world. I talk to so many people around the globe, travel a lot and organize a lot of workshops. Afterwards, I follow up on those, manage projects and implementations… It is an endless fun, if you enjoy this kind of ride.

If you were the TUHH President …

First of all, I would be so proud of my achievements. Second of all I would make sure I touch base with the current students, engage in the open conversati-on and listen to what they think can be improved in order to keep the TUHH competitive among other universities.
