CAMPS, SPORTS AND EXCURSIONS FUND (CSEF)
CSEF is now open. If you claimed CSEF at Emerson School last year you do not need to reapply this year. If
you are new to the school or you have not applied for CSEF at Emerson School before and you (the parent/
carer) hold a Centrelink pension/healthcare card in your name which was in date on the 29/1/2019, please
collect a CSEF application form at either office and return by June 28th.
Last Wednesday, 3rd April, a large number of family members and friends attended our Student Leadership Investiture presentation in our Middle School gymnasium. Our guest of honour was Cr Roz Blades, the Mayor of Greater Dandenong. Roz gave an inspiring address encouraging all students, staff and family members to be leaders within our wonderful school. She spoke of her admiration in the role that Emerson School plays in the City of Greater Dandenong and beyond. Cr Blades presented leadership badges to our School Captains, House Captains and Bus Captains. Congratulations to all students who were elected to leadership positions. I am sure that you will wear your leadership badge with pride and that you will set a fine example to all your fellow students. Congratulations to Dianne Wright and the multitude of staff who prepared the hall, morning tea and put so much effort into the organisation of this successful event. JOHN MOONEY Principal

Value of the Week
We will be studying the value, Courage, when we return to Emerson on Tuesday 23 April.
We demonstrate Courage every time we complete tasks that we felt were going to challenge us. Courageous people
do not let fear prevent them from achieving their goals.
Last Wednesday several of our Student Leaders spoke in front of more than 500 people.
It takes a lot of courage to talk in front of such a huge crowd. Some of them felt a little nervous but they were not
going to let fear get in their way. Congratulations to all our student Leaders. They have been chosen as they are all
great role models for their fellow students.
And a BIG thankyou to the many staff and students who worked tirelessly to make sure last Wednesday’s Investiture
Ceremony was such a huge success. Our Mayor, Cr Roz Blades AM, was very impressed with everyone. She talked
glowingly about our wonderful school. It was an honour to have her present the badges to our Student Leaders in
her Mayoral Robes.

HEALTH TIP:
Bed is for sleep, not screens
Computers, phones and TV can disrupt your sleep. Your mind needs to
associate being in bed with sleeping rather than watching TV or using
your computer. Don’t stay in bed if you’re wide awake.
JUNIOR SCHOOL BIRTHDAYS
Zack L (JSJ), Ashley H (JSH), Joshua N (JSC), Aaren W (JSF), Dylan P (JSF), Eric S (JSG)
INTERNET SAFETY TIPS
Be nice online and treat people the way you’d want to be treated. People who are nasty and aggressive
online are at greater risk of being bullied or harassed themselves. If someone’s mean to you, try not to
react, definitely don’t retaliate. Use privacy tools to block anyone who is being mean.

The Great Escape
Last month, as bushfires swept through the Bunyip State Park, the Emerson community was praying for the best. The Garfield
North Outdoor Education Centre was in the path of destruction. As we waited for updates from the Vic Emergency website, our
thoughts were with the locals living in the affected area. As residents were slowly allowed back into Garfield North, it was a
neighbour who gave the first indication that the camp may have been saved. As more news filtered through, it became apparent
that the Mt Martha CFA defended our camp buildings from the fire.
The camp means so much to all the member schools and their students. We are all very grateful to the dedicated CFA teams. The
story epitomizes the power of the community. Nature is already showing signs of regrowth and Melbourne Water are busy
coordinating the work required to get the camp fit for purpose. We look forward to welcoming schools back in the not too distant
future.

End of Term Sports Report
It has been a busy first term in P.E with students enjoying participating in a range of sports and demonstrating
great sportsmanship and energy. Well done to all students who represented Emerson during Interschool
Sports and on other sporting excursions. House rivalries have continued to flourish with weekly matchups
being played in competitive, hard fought matches. We have had coaches visit the school from Tennis and
Softball Victoria and players from the St Kilda Football Club. All of them have been impressed with student’s
determination and positivity when learning or enhancing new sporting skills.
Emerson is taking part in Active April which promotes healthy and active lifestyles. It encourages participants
to do 30mins of physical activity a day during April. By logging in online students can access instructional
videos for suggested activities and also find a number of activities/experiences in their local area. These
activities/experiences are discounted or even free for April. You can also enter draws to win sporting goods or
tickets to Melbourne events. Each student will have received a sheet with their own login. Good luck getting
out and getting active!!!

SCHOOL PHOTOS Dear Parents
We have our School Photo Day on the 6th of May. Your child will receive an envelope at the start of next term that has information on it to help you order your photographs. If you would like to order online at the photography company website www.msp.com.au you can do so by using your special Shootkey code which is on your envelope, this will open up all the products available. Once you have selected your photo pack and would like to order, you place it in the cart and pay with your credit card details. You will receive a reference number which is like your receipt. Please keep this until you have received your photos. If you wish to pay with cash please select the photo pack you would like and tick the box on the order form on the envelope and place the money in the pocket. The pocket can be sealed by removing the tape on the inner surface. Please return the envelope to your school office as soon as you can. If you would like to pay with credit card via a phone call to the MSP office you can do so by calling 52226747 and the operators will assist you with any questions you have. It is important you use your own child’s envelope as each Shootkey is unique to each child. If you misplace your envelope the school office has spare blank envelopes for you to use, but you must request your Shootkey code from them to help with your ordering and payments. This will become clearer once you receive your envelope. If you do have any questions please call the MSP office on the number previously mentioned.
