DISPATChES FROM

Dear Owners,

The Memorandum of Incorporation approved by 94% of votes present at our Special

General Meeting in November last year was registered with the Companies and Intellectual

Properties Commission on Tuesday February 5 this year. This important date marks the

definitive shift from our developmental stage as an estate to a mature one.

Negotiations to bed down the new Short-Term Leasing Rules, agreed at the Special General

Meeting, are underway and the Directors hope to be able to announce soon the entity

which will be administering the short-term leasing process. It is our intention to hold a

workshop with all potential lessors before we implement the system. The important point

here is that we must get the right administrative system in place to avoid frustration by

lessors and tenants. 4

Page 5: NEWSLETTER - MARCH 2019 March 2019.pdf · 1990s, mainly with new property development around South Africa. Currently, she represents Pam Golding Properties. She is involved with Sycor

Other news: the powers-that-be are looking at appointing a traffic pointsman at

peak times outside our estate. This has not yet been approved by the Municipality

and they are still in discussions as to the actual locations of the pointsman.

Ryan Streit has been in the forefront of representing Dunkirk’s interests in these

negotiations.

Also taking place soon, is the beginning of the removal of our bushbuck

population. The issue is an emotional one and we appreciate all the input we

have received from residents about it. It remains our view that it is essential

to reduce the population to zero to allow for the revegetation of our coastal

wetlands. Once that has happened, we can consider reintroducing the buck

in strictly limited numbers. At the same time, we are in consultation with

professionals to implement further drainage / attenuation solutions.

Thus, there is a lot on the go at the moment and we will endeavour to keep

everybody informed through our usual communication routes and this

newsletter.

Regards

Mark Roylance, Chair, and Directors of the HOA

Hanno, Donna and Dylan Schübel

In 2014, Hanno and I moved onto the estate along with our son Dylan and two Labradors, Lucky and Molly. Our beautiful old boy Lucky has sadly since passed away and Molly is about to turn fourteen, which makes her ninety-eight in dog years!

After living in Sheffield Beach for over twenty years, we decided to give estate living a try, first living in Simbithi and eventually settling in Dunkirk. We love Dunkirk Estate and the very relaxed, carefree lifestyle it offers our family. We also liked that it was one of the smaller estates. One of the biggest draw cards for us when choosing Dunkirk was definitely the Beach Clubhouse! The fact that it was on one of our favourite beaches sealed the deal!

Hanno is self-employed and owns a business in Ballito called “Blinds Shutters & Awnings”, which he has owned and run since 1989. As the name suggests, the business specialises in blinds, shutters and awnings. I am a stay-at-home mom, which is a full-time challenge that I love.

In his spare time, Hanno loves surfing and riding

his Harley. Whenever Hanno spoke about getting a

motorbike, I always thought it was just that –TALK.

Until one day I came home and much to my surprise,

found a motorbike had taken over my parking spot! I

thought, “Okay this is just a phase which will pass, and

I gave it a year tops...”

Fast-forward three years on and the bike still rules

my parking spot and it doesn’t look like it’s going

anywhere anytime soon!

Dylan is turning eleven and attends Ashton College.

When he is not at school, you will find him on the

beach, in the pool, on his bicycle, playing with Molly,

drawing, making crafts and creating all sorts of

gadgets! There is always something lying around that

Dylan is creating or experimenting with!

Our family of four have been in Dunkirk Estate since 2007. Originally from this area, we lived in

Mpumalanga on a family farm Tomahawk, and Somerset West before that.

Darren is the head of Sycor Construction and has built and renovated nearly twenty homes

in Dunkirk Estate, as well as in surrounding estates and suburbs over the last fifteen years.

He started his building career in the late eighties in Umhlanga as his family were property

developers, who starting Rolling Hills Country Club and Umhlanga Crest. He is Chairman of the

Ilembe Surf Riders which has given many local kids a chance to become part of the surf scene,

along with a great crew of children from Shakaskraal (and other areas) getting involved, and

growing rapidly with input from the Lifesavers, parents, young volunteers and local businesses.

Ex-Motox and Jetski champ, Darren still has that sparkle in his eye for fun and excitement!

Dyl, Kerryn, Zach and Jamie Wuth live at

142 Sameja Drive. They bought the property

seven months ago, and for three years prior

to that, lived at number 1 Sandwood Hills.

“We had been on the hunt for our ‘family

home’ for quite a few years. We had

intentions to build as we were battling to

find a home that suited our needs. When 142

came on the market it was a no-brainer for

us as it ticked all the boxes. It was probably

one of the quickest sales on the estate - we

viewed it on a Saturday and the deal was

signed on the Tuesday! We love that our

house is at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac and

that all of the families in our road also have

young children.”

Dyl and Kerryns’ families’ have a long

-standing tie with the estate. While Kerryn

was still studying, she, her mom Louise

Gibson, and younger brother Grant were

the second family to move onto the estate.

They rented 22 Sandwood Hills in 2005 while

Louise built her house in Hillside Lane.

12

Page 13: NEWSLETTER - MARCH 2019 March 2019.pdf · 1990s, mainly with new property development around South Africa. Currently, she represents Pam Golding Properties. She is involved with Sycor

Grant and his wife Cath have been living on the estate since 2011, as do Cath’s parents, Paul

and Anne de Robillard. Dyl’s brother Blake and wife Kirst also moved into the estate in 2015.

“It really is awesome having family so close by. The kids love it as they get to see their cousins

almost daily and it is incredibly reassuring knowing that support is only two minutes away if

you need it.”

Dyl and Kerryn studied together in Pietermaritzburg. Dyl qualified as a chartered accountant

in 2006 and Kerryn qualified as a dietitian in 2004. After spending five years in the UK together,

they moved back home to get married and to enjoy the amazing lifestyle that KZN has to offer

– a stark contrast to cold, grey, rainy London. Currently Dyl is director of Tradestar, a cash and

carry company that has stores in Zululand. Kerryn has her own private practice. She consults

in both Ballito and Umhlanga, and is specialised in child and sport nutrition.

Outside of work, most people who know Dyl will know that he is OBSESSED with fishing. He

will be up before the break of dawn at every opportunity to launch his fishing ski. “It is a great

past time and is a good form of exercise - having fresh fish for supper a few times a week is an

added bonus.”

Kerryn is passionate about food and loves cooking for her family

and friends. Meal times are an integral part of their family’s day

– always fresh, always homemade and meals are usually eaten

‘al fresco style’, especially during summer. Kerryn practices what

she preaches when it comes to food. “Good eating habits are

important to instil from an early an age as is possible for children,

and as adults setting the right example is even more critical as

kids copy their parents.”

As a family they enjoy spending days on the beach or otherwise

in the pool. The whole family are “water babies” and often make

full use of the beach clubhouse facilities.

Now that they are in their family home, they are excited to settle

in for a few years and to continue to enjoy the lifestyle that the

North Coast - and more specifically Dunkirk - has to offer.

Friday the fourteenth of December saw the much-anticipated Dunkirk Beach Club

Father Christmas party for the kids! It has always been a really popular afternoon,

especially with the younger children, and once again they were not disappointed.

Bernie, the Beach Club Manager, heads off to look after the reindeer whilst Father

Christmas arrives with the bags of presents. All the children were on their best

behaviour and eagerly awaiting their names to be called to fetch their little spoils,

and have a picture with Father Christmas in the happy spirit of the festive season.

Gifts, cool drinks, cakes and sweet treats handed out to the little ones added to

the energy and excitement of this annual family festive afternoon.

A huge thank you to all the residents that supported Bernie and his festive cheer!

A LASTING LEGACYNikki “Lettie” Haynes was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer in January 2012. Despite fighting like a Trojan, she lost her battle on 12 July 2014. She left behind a husband, three children and a legacy of strength and grace that has spilled over into this organisation, which bears her nickname.

Lettie’s husband Zoog was determined to use the remainder of the funds that had been raised to cover the expenses of Lettie’s battle in a way that would honour her and fight this terrible disease.

In November 2014, Zoog was approached by the Thangavay family. Their father was fighting throat cancer, and as the only driver in the family, getting to his radiotherapy appointments was a problem.

Zoog signed him up with Uber for the duration of his treatment and realised that this was the way that he could honour Nikki – by making sure that everybody could get to their treatment safely and comfortably.

The organisation was given the very apt name of “The Lettie Love Fund”.Since its inception on 12 August 2015, the fund has transported over 100 patients, covering more than 165 000km along the way. The relief that this has brought to patients and their families, and even to hospital staff, has been overwhelming.

20

A CANCER COUNTER-CULTURENobody should have to fight more than their cancer. Our mission is to make sure that every patient has a reliable, safe and FREE way to get to their treatment. We want to see them dedicating their time, energy and resources to waging their personal war against cancer – not getting to the battleground!

WHY IS TRANSPORT SUCH A GIFT? If getting cancer wasn’t awful enough, it can cost up to R62 for some patients to get to hospital and back home. That means that if somebody is travelling to radiation every day for six weeks, it can cost them over R2000. For a lot of families, that kind of money just doesn’t exist. Then, there’s safety to think about. You need to be at the hospital early, and that means waiting for a taxi in the dark.

You’re feeling weak, probably already nauseous at the mere idea of the treatmentthat lies ahead, and the last thing you need is to be looking around for potential muggers. Then you get squashed into an overcrowded taxi with a driver who is skipping lights, screeching on brakes to pick up passengers and generally showing as much respect for the rules of the road as cancer is showing your body. You’re feeling weak, probably already nauseous at the mere idea of the treatmentthat lies ahead, and the last thing you need is to be looking around for potential muggers.

Keeping fit is challenging as it is. Having to sign up to various gyms promising

the earth and costing a fortune is the other side to the coin, one which often

kills the enthusiasm straight from the words ‘debit order’. And then there is

the hack of having to travel to said fitness facility, deal with traffic and factor in

another 30 minutes to your training schedule?

That is why residents of various estates are now choosing to train within their

respective estates in world-class facilities - and, why wouldn’t they? 25

Dunkirk is one of those classy, intimate

estates that we don’t mention enough!

When last have you been to the Dunkirk

clubhouse? Seen the kids laughing, moms

in the sauna and dads working up a sweat

in the gym? Or even the Beach Club-

house, where the youngsters can take

their boards down to Salt Rock beach and

head out for a surf while coming back to

the safety of a clubhouse on the beach?

Coming back to the main estate, Dunkirk’s

award-winning clubhouse has featured

in several architectural magazines and

epitomises the Dunkirk way of life.

Equipped with a 25 metre outdoor

swimming pool which leads to a sauna

and steam room , inside you will find a

fully equipped gym overlooking the tree

tops.

Feel like a more competitive sport? The

floodlit tennis courts are situated below

the clubhouse for day and night use.

Leave the kids to run around the court

while you head off for a run around the

estate, experiencing the tranquillity of

the estate and the safety that comes with

training within a secure estate.

Keeping fit isn’t easy, but Dunkirk has

definitely tried to make it as convenient

as possible! Grab a pair of running shoes,

run the trails, walk up to the gym or go for

a swim. Residents here really don’t

have much of an excuse anymore!

His intention is to create awareness amongst the Dunkirk residents on
