Volunteer News Growing Vitality in a Volunteering Community
17 -25 May 2014
Tena Koutou
Although we promote volunteering through-
out the year, it is May when we concentrate on youth and
their generous contribution to volunteering in our dis-
trict. Our Youth Awards for Volunteering 2014 will recog-
nise a new group of 17 young people who carry out a di-
verse range of tasks for the benefit of others. We would
like to thank them for their contribution and congratulate
them on their initiative to be involved and to share their
time and skills with others.
We would also like to acknowledge the contribution of
those who haven’t been nominated, their contribution is
valued and appreciated also.
These young people are positive roles models for others
and we, as adults, should be supporting their enthusiasm
and acknowledging their involvement , no matter how big
or small it is.
National Volunteer Week is 15-21 June and the theme is:
Naku te rourou nau to rourou ka ora ai to tangata, With
your contribution and my contribution the people will
live. Statistically, here in Poverty Bay we are a generous
community with volunteer contribution and here at the
Volunteer Centre we are humbled by the generosity of
people from all walks of life, all ages and ethnicities, who
continue to contribute to our community.
Nāku nā,
Jenny
Youth play an important role with our nation’s
volunteers
By Vanisa Dhiru, VNZ CEO, May 15th, 2014
“Youth form the foundation for communities of the future. They have the power to affect the way their nation or world will look by engaging with causes that have significance for them.” Youth activities and voices hold equal strength within our diverse communities.

Jane Says,
The best recruitment tools are soundly
planned programmes and worthwhile
volunteer jobs that equally meet agency
and volunteer needs.
After enjoyably hosting our recent workshop on volunteer recruitment I thought it would be of use to
look at the relevant steps needed to be taken when organisations and volunteer managers are seeking
volunteers. Opposite are some best practise guidelines which you could consider when you or your or-
ganisation think it may need volunteers.
First glance it may appear to look like an unnecessary amount of considerations just to recruit a volun-
teer to take on what you perceive to be a simple volunteer task and quite honestly, not all the points
will be relevant to all positions. The purpose of these guidelines is to aid and I think also helps to recog-
nise the importance of both the volunteer managers role and that of any volunteer. It supports to dis-
pel the notion and reinforce the point that volunteers are not an all singing and dancing act that can do
all that we require for nothing in return. As with a paid position, clear expectations, respect, support
and excellent communication ensure that all are well prepared to undertake the tasks required of them
and that volunteer managers are supported in their recruitment role to oversee that this happens.
Remember the Gisborne Volunteer Centre is here to assist you, we can help
with:
Advice and support to volunteers and organisations.
Help organisations to establish and develop great volunteer opportunities. Provide information and training about volunteering and volunteer management. And recruit and refer interested people to your organisation.

National Volunteer week
15th –21st June 2014
We would like to receive photographs from our regis-
tered organisations of their volunteers caught in the
act of volunteering.
These photographs will be used as part of our display
on show at HB Williams Memorial Library during Na-
tional volunteer week.
Lets show case the diversity of volunteers and volun-
teering in our community and publically thank them.
So get your cameras out and catch those volunteers in
action.
Please drop off, post or email all photos to
