Confirmations 2014 The Confirmation group on 5th April. Report page 2 At the General Easter Vestry Meeting Some of the attendees at the General Easter Vestry Meeting. Report on page 6 From the Rector In this edition of the Mirror, I would like to draw your attention to the Church of Ireland Bishops' Appeal Fund. This is the Church of Ireland's instrument for assisting with immediate relief in time of disaster and also in making a contribution to World Development. All money subscribed to Bishops' Appeal goes to where it is needed and is given to trusted partners such as Christian Aid and Tear Fund who pledge to use every cent for the proper purpose. (We have been made aware in recent years of certain other charities whose money is spent on high wages and lavish headquarters.) Even the poorest of us in Malahide is rich by the standards of the truly poor in a world where there is a growing gap between the 'haves' and the 'have nots'. Each copy of this month's 'Mirror' should contain two inserts: a copy of last year's report from the Bishop's Appeal Fund, and an envelope. I ask you to read the leaflet prayerfully and generously, and then to fill in the envelope in the same spirit and leave it on the collection plate at Church or in the letter box on the side of the Parish Centre or in St Andrew's School. The sole employee of Bishops' Appeal is Ms Lydia Monds, who will be preaching on Sunday 25th May both at 10.00 in St Doulagh's and at 11.30 St. Andrew's. Selfishness is the cause of many of the world's problems. The 'west' hoards its resources and exploits the poor, substituting cash crops such as coffee, cotton and bananas for subsistence crops, coming to one-sided deals for such resources as oil, gas and fish. As Christians we must do something about exploitation and grinding poverty. Talking isn't enough: Bishop's Appeal enables us to do something concrete and practical to help. SympathyWe offer our sympathy to Richard Lynch, Sonesta, on the recent death of his father, to Tom Healy, Torcaill on the death ofhis mother, to Eric Crampton, Biscayne, whose brother has diedin Canada, to Claire Garrad, Seabury on the death of her mother in Helen's Bay, to Dermot Hegarty on the death of his sister-in-law, to Garry O'Flaherty, Gartan, Swords, on the death of his father, and to our Archbishop, on the recent death of his mother.

FarewellKaeshiker & Mercy Jayasingh and their son Kevin have been regular worshippers in St Andrew's over the last two years. They have moved to Galway for work purposes and we wish them well in their new and very different abode.

ConfirmationDespite being held on a Saturday morning, there was a large congregation present to see fourteen of our own parishioners and one candidate from Holmpatrick confirmed. The morning was unusual in that the actual confirmation was preceded by the baptism of no less than four of the candidates and also that no less than four of the candidates were adults.

There are many people to be thanked: our Youth Worker Jamie Heffelfinger who led the teenage training along with the Rector and he also organised a very moving and challenging retreat forthe candidates in the Church of Ireland Theological Institute on the weekend before the confirmation, to Ruth Stribblehill who officiated at the organ, to St Andrew's School for producing the service leaflets, to the churchwardens and sidespersons, to Susan Gamble who organised refreshments in the Rectory between the baptism and confirmation services and to Mgr Peter Briscoe, for the loan of a ciborium which enabled us to distribute communion at the rear of the Church as well as at thealtar rails. Thanks are also due to the candidates' families for the support they gave them, and to the Select Vestry who presented each candidate with a suitable book and to the Archbishop for his very relevant and challenging address.

General Vestry RegisterThis was revised at the February Select Vestry meeting. Thirteen names of parishioners who had moved or died were deleted, and the following names were added:

Jamie Heffelfinger, Glenda Howlett, Helen Humphries, Paul Humphries, Neil Johnston, Rachel Lowther, Cameron Marr, Kym McGivern, Joanne Montgomery, Trevor Montgomery, Princess Nwusu, Audrey O'Neill, Ian Purser, Miriam Purser,Neal Ruttledge, Emer Spedding, Carla Taplin, Angela Toner, and Chinyere Uchendu. The General Vestry Register is a list of those entitled to vote at the Easter General Vestry Meeting, and to stand for office in and for the parish.

Youth Worker Reader TrainingOur Youth Worker, Jamie Heffelfinger, was a recognised Methodist Local Preacher although he has subsequently transferred his allegiance to the Church of Ireland. Local Preachers are equivalent to Anglican Diocesan Readers and his admission as a reader will take place once our Diocesan authorities are happy he has been training in the liturgical functions of a Reader in the Church of Ireland.

As he is working in the parish, we have been asked to provide this training which includes competence in reading and leading

Easter General VestryThe rector delivered his annual report as part of the combined service in St Andrew’s Church on Sunday 27th April. He began by saying “ I have great pleasure in presenting this report on thelife of our parish during 2013. I begin with expressing thanks to all our parish officers for their hard work during the past year. Brian Cody, the Kilkenny hurling manager, and a primary schoolprincipal was asked to address the INTO conference in Kilkenny last week, and the theme of his address was about theessential nature of what he termed 'voluntarism', that society needed people to actively involve themselves as volunteers in activities such as schools, sports clubs and churches and that ifwe ever lost that that we would have lost one of the bonds that binds social activity together.

Brian Cody was obviously thinking of the GAA, and of the support given to small country schools. The Church of Ireland would not exist were it not for volunteers such as yourselves, and I thank all of you for the often sacrificial time you give to theparish and its life in ways both large and small”.

Following light refreshments in the general assembly room in the school, elections took place for the various wardens and parish representative posts and the Select Vestry, details of which are on page 5.

Friends of St. Doulagh'sThis year, 2014, the Friends of St. Doulagh's are celebrating the150th anniversary of the completion of the 'new' nave in St. Doulagh's, that is the part of the church where services are heldthese days. Of course the old church, now used as a vestry, is about five times as old than that, but as we don't know the precise date of its building, it's difficult to celebrate a centenary.

The new church was completed late in 1844 and consecrated by Archbishop Trench on 15th January 1845.

The Friends of St. Doulagh's have already in 2012 commissioned a fine silver cross, based on the design of the old granite cross that can be seen at the entrance to the church. These are available for sale in the church, or from members of the Friends. This year, the Friends have commissioned a small crystal medallion that can be used as a Christmas Tree decoration, with an etching of the church encased inside it. These will available in the church in the coming season.

The anniversary will be marked on St. Doulagh's Day, 17th November, by a special service. The Preacher on the day will be Revd. Andrew Studdart Kennedy. Mr. Studdart Kennedy is the great-grandson of Revd. William Studdart Kennedy, who was Perpetual Curate of St. Doulagh's at the time of the rebuilding. He is the grandson of Revd. Geoffrey Anketell Studdert Kennedy, better known as 'Woodbine Willie', who was a much-loved chaplain to the British forces in World Was I. He got his nickname from his practice of giving bodily as well as spiritual comfort to the wounded and dying.

Other activities planned include a “St. Doulagh's Birthday Party”, which will also be a fund-raiser for the building fund.

St. Doulagh's church is open to the public on Sunday afternoons during the summer months, and during Heritage Week. The Friends of St. Doulagh's provide guides to show people round the church, and to be a presence on the site whileit is open. Guides typically take a turn one Sunday in the year, or sometimes two. Currently, numbers of guides are low and more are needed. If you are interested, please contact Victor Black at [email protected], or any other member of the Friends.
