they worry and fret each and every year in preparing the students. October 25th was World Teachers Day. I am amazed on a daily basis by the professionalism and dedication of the teachers here at Mitchell High School. Teaching your children is a joy, however it also carries a great responsibility; this reminds me of the words of a great man. Nelson Mandela who suffered so much yet had the capacity to forgive and was able to unite a divided country, has a wonderful wise way of expressing many things. Below is an example of what I mean and presents a challenge to all teachers and parents alike.

A PARENT’S REQUEST TO A TEACHER – By Nelson Mandela My child will have to learn I know, that all people are not just, all people are not true but teach my child also that for every scoundrel there is a hero, that for every selfish politician, there is a dedicated leader.

Teach my child that for every enemy there is a friend.

Teach my child to learn to lose and also to enjoy winning.

Steer my child away from envy, if you can. Teach my child the secret of quieter laughter. Teach my child the wonder of books; but also give my child quiet time to ponder the eternal mystery of birds in the sky, bees in the sun and flowers on a green hillside. In school teach my child it is far more honourable to fail than to cheat. Teach my child to have faith in her ideas even if everyone tells them they are wrong. Teach my child to be gentle with gentle people and tough with the tough. Try to give my child the strength not to follow the crowd when everyone is getting on the band-wagon. Teach my child to listen to all people but teach her so to filter all she hears on a screen of truth and take only the good that comes through. Teach my child to laugh when she is sad. Teach her there is no shame in tears. Teach my child to laugh when she is sad. Teach her there is no shame in tears. Teach my child to cover her ears to a howling mob; and stand and fight if she thinks she’s right.

Teach my child gently but do not coddle her as only the test of fire makes fine steel. Teach my child to have courage to be impatient, let her have the patience to be brave. Teach my child always to have sublime faith in her Creator and faith in herself too, because then she will always have faith in humankind. This is a big order, but please see what you can do. My child is such a fine little person.

- Nelson Mandela

At this time we are looking to finalise our School Plan for 2019 and beginning the consultation for the 2020 Plan. We have been very fortunate to receive $805,869 in flexible funding for Equity loading. This will allow us to continue with many of the initiatives to support student learning and engagement whilst supporting literacy, Numeracy and wellbeing targets. We welcome student and parent feedback and ideas how to better support our students at Mitchell High.

Deputy Principal's Report

Bike Safety

Once again a reminder to continue to discuss bike and scooter/skateboard safety with your children. We continuously discuss on assemblies each week however, Mr Campbell and myself continue to receive phone calls from members of the public, particularly parents at Shelley picking up their children about the unsafe and dangerous riding behaviours of our students. Helmets are a must and a law and students need to obey all road rules whilst riding safely on the road.

Year 9 and 10 Electives 2020

Students have been made aware of their electives for next year. There were a couple of subjects that are not running at all and a couple that cannot be studied for a 200hr course due to restrictions on the syllabus. Students in these cases were given an opportunity to make a choice for change. No other student should need to make any changes as all were told they must be willing to study any of the 6 subjects they elected on the form.

School Uniform

The school uniform shop will be raising the prices as of 1st

January 2020. They have not had a price rise since they won the tender almost 5 years ago. It might be timely to get in now for senior uniforms for Years 10 into 11 (2020). This is also a good time to let you know that we are phasing in the school blazer as a compulsory item for Year 11 from next year and this will flow into Year 12, 2021. As has been the case for the past 2 years any student in Years 7 – 12 are allowed to and are encouraged to purchase a school blazer.

There are a number of second hand white senior girls blouses in the front office for sale for anyone looking to have some extras at home.

Any year 10 or 12 student who is signing out and would like to donate any school uniforms back to the school can do so at the front office and would be most welcomed.

Year 10 leavers

Any student currently in Year 10 and planning to leave at the end of the school year must ensure they are following the mandatory school guidelines.

Students must be:- enrolled at school until age 17- working 25 + hours a week and have a signed letter from employer stating such- be in approved study at TAFE or other institute as part of an apprenticeship / traineeship and supplemented with part time work to equal 25 hours or more

If your child is intending to leave please make sure you make us aware of this as it can affect other students access to subject places in popular subjects as well as staffing of these areas. Further details and support to help in transiting can be obtained by making an appointment with the careers officer – Mrs. Rumi-badger.

Extended holidays

Anyone requiring extended holidays at this time of the year or in fact throughout the year are reminded that you need to book an appointment with the appropriate Deputy Principal for any leave of 5 or more school days and must provide travel documentation.

South Korean Dance Tour

During the last holidays Ms Sands, Ms Marinis and myself had the privilege of travelling to South Korea as part of the Blacktown Council Delegation to Suseong-gu. The group of 12 students and 3 teachers were very excited to be embarking on this trip for 10 days of what was a trip of a lifetime.

There are many posts on the official Facebook page for

the tour but some of the highlights included:

- students performing at the middle school and being treated like rockstars- performing in front of the City of Suseong-gu at heir annual festival as the opening dance item- visiting temples and palaces that were incredibly beautiful and humbling to be around- a special blessing by the monks in the temple and then sitting down to lunch with the Mayor and delegates from both City Councils and the monks- awakening each day to the “surprise breakfast of the day”, never knowing what would be inside our packages- learning to dry oneself with a hand towel as that was all that was provided for all of us- discovering just how many photos teenagers can take of themselves and each other at every single venue!!!!!!- the traditional tea ceremony and getting to dress in traditional costume- watching the adult males suffer through some embroidery lessons and complete a project each- completing the ”shooting dance” in the many locations that were famous and or stood out as spectacular

So the journey of 10 days was certainly enlightening for many and the friendships strengthened and new friends developed, including many many followers for Tegan’s Instagram page. We had a onderful time getting to know our students better and were absolutely so impressed by their talents, resilience and the great ambassadors that they proved to be for Mitchell High School and Blacktown City and Australia. We hope that it was a life changing experience for them all and that they will al have fond memories of our journey together.

their thoughts on the various issues which the youth of our sister cities are facing, such as domestic violence, mental health issues, climate change and social change. Following the forum, more entertainment was provided by many talented individuals, including Playschool Host Jay Laga’aia. Then we had a beautifully smoked feast for the celebration of the ‘Hangi in the Country 2019’ at the Royal Theatre Quirindi.

Just before heading back home, the Mitchell Team sat down for breaky and said their final goodbyes to those who created and shared this experience. The SLB Team would like to say a BIG thank you those who organised this wonderful trip and welcomed us to Liverpool Plains Shire! We wish you all the best during this rough time.

by William Archer

Senior Leaders Trip to Quirindi

On Friday the 25th of October, Senior Leaders Paris, Naiora, Skylan, Jesse, Charles and William; along with SLB Co-ordinators Mrs Larrea and Mr Chung, departed for a 5-hour bus trip to our drought-affected sister city, Liverpool Plains Shire.

The Mitchell Team first visited the Qurindi Rural Heritage Village and Windy Station; where we learnt and explored what these locations had to offer, as well as some insight on the terrible drought that is currently affecting the sister city. The next stop was the local Jockey Club; where dinner was provided, as well as greetings and information about the drought status from the Liverpool Plains Shire Mayor Cnr. Andrew Hope and Blacktown Deputy Mayor Julie Griffiths, and entertainment from a star-in-the-making and a hilarious Elvis Presley impersonator.

On Thursday, our leaders suited up in formal attire and travelled to Qurindi’s Emergency Precinct where everyone indulged in a hearty breakfast, listened to a few words from volunteers of the Rural Fire Service and attend the World Cafe Youth Forum. Together, with other high schools from the Blacktown and Qurindi region, overseas visitors, council officials and RAP 4 CHANGE workshops, they were given the opportunity to express

Enviro Club

National Recycling Week is being held during November (11-17). Enviro Club will be promoting recycling at MHS through daily reminders in the rolls and an announcement on assembly the following week.

By ensuring our recyclable bottles and cans go into the big green Return and Earn bins around the school we can play our part to help MHS be more sustainable. When recyclable material goes in the general waste bin it ends up going to landfill, where it stays forever. By putting our bottles and cans into the Return and Earn bins we are giving those resources a second chance at life. And as an added bonus we are raising funds for the school to put towards student projects.

Small actions by many = big changes for the planet. We can all play a part at MHS to be more sustainable.

VIVO Update

It has been a busy year with VIVOs, we are so proud of our students who consistently display R.E.A.L values. Thank you to all staff and students who have generously donated items and services to the VIVO Shop. If you have any items or services you would like to donate as prizes, please pass these on to Ms John in the English Staffroom. A special thank you to McDonald’s at St Martin’s Village and Arndell Park for kindly donating vouchers to this PBL initiative, we love rewarding our students in such exciting ways. There are only a few weeks of the school year left, so earn as many VIVOs as you can! Congratulations to Mirabooka on winning the House BBQ, remember all your VIVOs contribute to House points over the course of the year. Which house will win in 2020?

Maths STARS

The final Maths STARS ceremony will be held in week 8 this term. To be selected, students should continue to work hard and display REAL behaviours in all maths lessons.

Return of Textbooks

Students are reminded to check at home for maths textbooks issued this year and return them to their maths teachers after their examination. Any student who has lost his or her textbook needs to contact their maths teacher for replacement costs.

All senior students need to return their textbooks to the Library after completion of the course.

Preparation for 2020

To be prepared for maths lessons in 2020, students should start by doing the following.

They need to purchase the following equipment: 1. A scientific Calculator – School is selling Casio calculators for $25. Students need to pay at the office and take the receipt to the maths staffroom to get the calculator. Next year prices are going up.

2. Exercise books - Students need to purchase 3 to 4 ruled A4 size books with margins. The books are sold at bargain prices at Officeworks from January onwards.

The special Number ᴫ ( pie) – In class activity (7H)Students are working in groups to determine the approximate value of ᴫ. A string was used to measure the circumference of the circular object, then used a ruler to measure the length of the string. A ruler was used to measure the diameter. The ratio of the circumference and the diameter of all circular objects were calculated and compared. It was found that the ratio was always little bit more than 3. This ratio is called the ᴫ.

Dear Parent/Carer(s),

STUDENT REPORTS ARE ACCESSIBLE ONLINE THROUGH MILLENNIUM PARENT/STUDENT PORTAL

This year the decision has been made to no longer print student reports in hard copy, starting with the Semester Two reports for Years 7-10. This decision has been made in an effort to reduce the environmental impact of Mitchell High School as we move into a greener, more sustainable future.

Year 12 students are the exception to this rule where they will always be provided with a printed copy of their yearly report as part of their Graduation Portfolio.

Student reports will be available in a digital format through the school’s Millennium Parent/Student Portal. Parent/Carer/Student(s) will still be able to print hard copies of report through their portal. Digital copies of the student school reports have been available throughout the year through the portal, using either the student or parent login details.

All Millennium Parent Portal passwords with instructions were posted mid-February 2019. If you have misplaced your login details, please contact the Mitchell High School Administration Office on 9622 9944.

Below are instruction on how to access and view student’s reports. Use Google Chrome Millennium Parent Portal link: https://www.millenniumschools.net.au/portal/

We appreciate your support in our endeavours to become a more environmentally sustainable school for both our students and our greater community and if you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact the school.

INFORMATION ON MHS FEES Resource/Printing Fee: All monies received are directed through to whole school resources such as library books, reference material, periodicals and photocopying. This is a conscious effort to improve the quantity and quality of learning support materials for students.

Sport Levy Fee: The Sport Levy Fee goes towards the entry and transport to the MHS Athletics and Swimming Carnivals. The Sport Levy Fee for Year 7 is higher as it includes Year 7 Water Activities.

Internet and Software Licences Fee: Internet and Software Licences Fee received are directed towards whole school resources such as computers, internet, software licenses and other technologies. Monies received are used to supplement the school’s base financial allocation. The level of payment has been negotiated with the Mitchell High School community and all attempts are made to keep these at a minimum.

Subject Fees: Subject Fees are mandatory and go towards paying for materials consumed during the production of student work and projects e.g. food, wood, textiles, paints, canvas and so on. All subject fees are kept to a minimal rate and any fee changes are negotiated with the Principal and the MHS Parent & Citizens Association (P&C).

All monies requested for specific subject fees are used solely for the purchase of consumable materials in those subjects. It is most important that students experience the use of a range of materials from fabrics to timbers to sheet music to provide a broad and solid foundation of learning in early secondary years. The payment of subject fees provides the school with the funds to purchase materials necessary for use by students in these subjects.

Junior Fees: Students who are not able to pay the subject fee in one instalment must negotiate a payment plan with the school by

Term 1 Week 4, or they may be asked to select a non-fee paying subject in consultation with the Principal. Students in Year 9 will not be able to select a fee paying subject for the following year (Year 10) if their fees remain unpaid.

In consideration of this it is important to note that there are many non-fee paying electives that students can choose. Students will be unable to attend non-curricular excursions and international visits etc. unless their subject fees are paid.

Preliminary and HSC Fees: Some subjects attract additional fees as a result of their use of additional consumable materials. All costs are kept to a minimum but are necessary in order to provide the materials to meet the practical components of the subject. Students who elect to take these subjects are required to pay for the materials and uniforms that are required to meet the

subject requirements. Students who have not paid their fees or negotiated a payment plan, will be required to bring in all of the necessary

equipment and supplies for practical lessons. Students are unable to purchase the Year 12 jersey/jacket or attend non-curricular excursions such as international visits,

Year 12 Big Day Out, Year 12 Formal etc. unless they have paid their subject fees.

If your child’s fees are paid in full during Term 1 of each year, your fee will be reduced by $10.00 to act as an incentive. We understand that the costs of living today are high, but your support in early payment would be greatly appreciated, and provides an immediate means for improving the quality of education provision for your child. If you have any difficulties with your payments, please contact the school to negotiate a payment plan.

Invoices with detailed information regarding payment of fees will be posted early in Term 1, then reminders throughout the year.

MHS UNIFORM INFORMATION AND REQUIREMENTS INFORMATION

Dear Parent/Carer(s) and MHS students, All students are expected to be aware of uniform requirements and to wear the correct uniform every day to follow the Mitchell High School Code of Dress as ratified by the Mitchell High School (MHS) P&C and MHS Uniform Committee. The School Locker is our official uniform supplier and students are only allowed to wear items purchased from this supplier at school. The only items exempt from this are socks, tights and shoes. The school pants and shorts for boys and girls have an embroidered MHS on the side pocket for identification. Please remember that these styles have been decided upon by the MHS P&C, student representatives and staff. In relation to the wearing of the uniform please note the following:

School shoes MUST be black hard leather lace-up (including a leather tongue) for Work Health & Safety reasons. No soft leather or canvas shoes are acceptable. School shoes can be purchased from the School Locker at very reasonable prices.

Socks may be black, grey or white for boys and girls but MUST NOT have any logos on them. Our uniform shop, The School Locker, sells socks and tights.

Ties may be worn with the white business shirt by senior boys or the appropriate shirt by senior girls.

No sleeves or shorts are to be rolled up or taken up. As a general guide the shorts for both boys and girls should be no more than 5cm above the knee.

Girls’ winter skirts are also to be no more than 5cm above the knee.

Only plain white undershirts (short or long sleeved) may be worn for additional warmth. These must be worn under the polo shirt and tucked in. These will be available through the School Locker.

If you have any problems with purchasing school uniform items because of sizing, please discuss this with the ladies in the uniform shop as they are able to provide special sized items.

The school has a clothing pool of items available for purchases from the school administration office.

If you are experiencing financial difficulty the school does have a Student Assistance Scheme. Please ring and discuss this with the Deputy Principal of your child’s year. Not all items are available through this scheme.

There is an option for a warmer zip up jacket with fleecy lining available from the School Locker now. These are slightly more expensive than the other one, but definitely warmer for those students who feel the cold.
