Kindergarten to Year 12 Issue No: 19 18TH JUNE, 2014
PRIMARY CLASS RESTRUCTURES Over the past two terms, we have enrolled many new students at the school in unprecedented numbers. The Primary Department now have nearly 250 students enrolled. The Primary section is now the largest it has ever been. As a result, we now have huge classes especially in Stage 3, which is not conducive to optimum and quality learning. The decision has been made to restructure the classes in the Primary for Semester 2 so that class sizes can be reduced across the school and students can get more individual attention. The decision has been a hard one to make but with more parents continually enquiring about our school, we expect even more enrolments over the next Semester. As a result, some children will begin with a new teacher next term, with some remaining with their current teacher. As always, student class placements are done with great care. We hope that the school community will understand the need for the change. Letters concerning this change have been sent out to parents and there was an Information Evening held on Monday to discuss these changes.
L3 – LANGUAGE, LEARNING AND LITERACY L3- Language, Learning and Literacy has officially come to Molong Central School. Last year after visiting other schools, our Kindergarten teachers decided they liked what they saw in the L3 classrooms. This year our students are accessing L3 as part of their daily literacy activities. L3 requires students to work with their teacher in groups of 3 or less on Guided Reading and Guided Writing. This ensures students are getting individualised and targeted instruction. Couple this with explicit Modelled Reading, Interactive Writing and Independent Writing, our students results are already taking off! Carefully selected independent activities ensure the teacher is able to provide the individual attention children need. With Ready Set Go, our transition to school program beginning in Term 3, Kindergarten at Molong Central is certainly the place to be! Pop into our Primary office to put your child’s name down for Ready Set Go and
spread the word to those that might not get our newsletter!

On my first few days at McCarron Cullinane in Orange, I went to the Carcoar Saleyards to get cattle ready for a sale. Towards the end of the week, I travelled around Orange with the team and spoke to farmers about their sheep and cattle to determine which ones would be for sale. It was a very enjoyable week. I spent my second week at Bridgestone Tyres in Orange. During this week I was able to assist in fitting tyres, completing registration checks, repairs and brakes service. Bridgestone was a good place to complete work experience. I would recommend it to anyone interested in this line of work. Tim Milne

YEAR 10 2014 - WORK EXPERIENCE Students at Molong Central School are provided with the opportunity to complete a work experience program which aims to encourage personal growth, independence and develop a better understanding of their career pathway. We have positive working relationships with many employers. Through this experience our students further develop their pathway to independence through workplace learning, and develop physical skills, communication skills, and confidence. Each week the students have the opportunity to reflect on the day of work and discuss skills developed, identify achievements, strengths, areas for improvement and preferences within the workplace. Our students are lucky enough to have this experience which gives them an opportunity to gain an insight into real life working conditions. Many of our students have proven themselves to be professional and responsible enough to obtain regular paid work after their placements. Here are a few our students giving their views about their experiences For my first week of work experience I went to the Molong Health Service. I found my week to be very interesting and enjoyable. All the employees were patient and encouraging. I was lucky enough to be taught many skills such as taking patients observations, how to operate lifting machines and take tests. From this week, I can definitely say that a career in the Health Industry is definitely for me. My 2nd week gave me the opportunity to experience life at Prunis Lodge. This week was very enjoyable and different from a public health care facility. My duties included; making beds, cleaning sheets, organising and participating in activities with the residents. All staff were polite and encouraging, especially when teaching and showing me different aspects of the job. I enjoyed my week and was sad when I had to leave and say goodbye to all the wonderful residents and employees. Courtney Davies
For my two weeks of work experience, I went to St Joseph’s School, Manildra. During the first week, I went around to different classrooms helping and getting to know the staff and students. I had the opportunity to assist with reading, writing and art activities. It was really a great experience and I would like to thank St Josephs for allowing me to be a part of their community for the two weeks. Hayden Watts

MCS DEBATING VERSE MANILDRA PUBLIC SCHOOL Recently, our Junior and Senior debating teams travelled to
Manildra Public School for the first round of the Western
Challenge Debating Competition. Both teams had the same
topic which was “That Australia needs a new flag”. Both
teams were arguing against the topic. The juniors were first
to debate and the Manildra team, which were older than our
Year3 and 4 members, put forward a strong case. However,
with some great rebuttals, the Adjudicator found our case
stronger and awarded us the win. It was the very first
debate for our team, Amelia Punch, Lucy Vis Lowe, Ella
Kirby and Meg Murray, and they were very happy about
their win. The Senior team, consisting of Rebecca Geddes,
Sarah Rapley, Henrietta Pottie and Hannah Leisk were
next to go. They had some really good reasons why Australia
doesn’t need a new flag. They also presented some clever
rebuttals to the Manildra team’s arguments. Unfortunately,
the Adjudicator felt the Manildra team were just a fraction
stronger in their case so gave the win to Manildra. Whilst
the Senior team were disappointed, they felt positive about
their performance and look forward to their next debate to
make improvements on the Adjudicators suggestions. We
would like to thank Mrs Margaret Brown who adjudicated
the debates and for Manildra for having us as guests at
their school. Our next debates will be in the final week of
this term against Millthorpe for the juniors and Manildra
again for the seniors. The topic is “That primary school
children should have a Facebook page”. Both teams are
agreeing!
WESTERN CROSS COUNTRY TRIALS Last Wednesday Jesyca and Emily Pearson travelled to
Wellington to compete in the Western Region Cross Country
Trials. This was on the back of their excellent results at
the District Carnival a fortnight ago where they both won
their respective age divisions. At Western level the
competition certainly heats up. Both Jesyca and Emily ran
fantastic races on a quite uneven and sandy track. Emily
finished 8th in her age division which is an excellent
achievement as there are approximately 70 runners in each
race. Jesyca finished 3rd in her race which now means she
has qualified to run at the State event in Sydney early next
term. This is Jesyca’s third time that she has qualified for
State which is an outstanding achievement. We wish Jesyca
the best of luck at State and look forward to hearing her
report.

There is a link to video trailers for books that are in the series of ‘The Last Thirteen’, ‘Hunger Games’ and ‘Tom Gates’. If you then click on the box for Book Club your child will find a link to Book Club TV which talks about new releases and old favourites. It runs for approx. 5 minutes. There is also information about the Minecraft Competition as well as a Tom Gates drawing competition. Conditions of entry and rules can be downloaded for each competition. There are quite a few talented Primary students who may like to start doodling and enter the Tom Gates event. The closing date is 31st August, 2014. This week we congratulate Maddison Burgess (Year 7) and Harrison Hill (Year 3) on completing the Premier’s Reading Challenge for this year. They are to be commended for their continued dedication to this challenge and it has been pleasing to see their enthusiasm when they visit the Library to select books. A fine achievement Maddison and Harrison! It was sad to hear last week that the author of the ‘Spot’ books, Eric Hill passed away. He brought a lot of fun into our home with his delightful stories about Spot and his friends. The lift-the-flap books were very popular – an innovation that Mr Hill introduced to other children’s authors throughout the years. So, if you have a chance over the coming week, share one of his books or watch one of the animated programs with your younger children. By the time you receive this newsletter your child should have been issued with their Book Club order so once again, if they do not bring everything home please let the Library staff know as soon as possible. Enjoy a week of reading! Mrs Hall
