delicious and very Aussie lunch of meat pies and salad was followed by our Service, and then of course, bowls which were unfortunately cut short by wet weather. Our thanks once again to Jim Kemp for his always moving rendition of The Ode, and to Jenny Hole and her team for orchestrating a very successful event. Two of our most prestigious bowling events will commence in May, with the Men's Singles Championship and the Presidents' Trophy both attracting strong entries. Singles Championship entries do not close until Saturday 13th May, so there is still time to sign up to challenge the current Club Champion Scott Denham - really, all Men's Pennants players should enter, and be competitive. Presidents' Trophy entries closed, pleasingly with around 40 bowlers taking part - round 1 should be played by 30th May, with each round being able to be played over a 4 week period. Please make sure you understand the Conditions of Play which are displayed on the noticeboard, and in particular the footnote relating to the timely completion of games - given the liberal timetable there can be no exceptions for delayed games!

he Men's Pennant season has just 2 games to go, and all our teams are prominent. The Sixes sit proudly on top of their Ladder, while both the 4s and 7s are in touch (just!) with the leading teams in their grade. I'm sure all pennant bowlers will be striving to be in the finals action later this month. Mosman has enjoyed a succession of 5 Waterman Trophy wins before being narrowly beaten by the current trophy holders, Dee Why, and then North Sydney who both go straight to the semi-final. The other semi-finalists will be determined after the final round on 10th May, with the semi-finals played the following Wednesday, 17th May and then the final on Wednesday 24th May. After a procession of weather d e l a y s , t h e M u f t i P a i r s Competition was decided in April with Sue Addison & Brian Spear victorious over Mukundrai Patel & Ron Hassall. Thanks to all the pairs teams for their patience over the prolonged period and to Jeff Hole for managing the competition. Entries for the 2017 Mixed Pairs Competition will open this month, with the 1st round to be played on or before Wednesday 31st May. This is always a well-subscribed competition, and I hope it will again attract a healthy number of entries. We welcome the Great Public Schools Old Boys Bowling Association (GPS) to Mosman this month. The GPS Competition has been played at Warringah BC for many years, and we hope to have them with us for even longer! The GPS will be played on the 3rd Sunday afternoon of each month from May until November, with 8 schools (Grammar, High, Kings, Newington, Riverview, Scots,

St. Josephs and Shore) competing. S e v e r a l M o s m a n m e m b e r s participate, with John Rock and Peter McAdam a part of the current Champion team, Kings. The schedule for the Bowling Tour to Perth in November is now c o n f i r m e d , w i t h " f r i e n d l y tournaments" at Dalkeith, Mosman Park and Manning Bowling Clubs confirmed for Monday 20th, Wednesday 22nd and Friday 24th respectively. Some 40 members have already expressed their interest in touring! I'll now be working on the detail of the tour which I hope to finalise and advise this month, and will be looking for p a r t i c i p a t i o n confirmation in June.

drive to convey our message to the masses. We have many

activities this year, and hope to broaden our membership and

activities base.

was a difficult time with games cancelled, lots of playing in the wet and finally, having to finish off games which had already been started. All three grades should be very proud of their achievements and final results. Grade 1 probably came second in their grade but as there was a clear winner not all games were finished leaving us feeling frustrated at not having a final result. Grade 3 had to finish a game against Belrose at Belrose and unfortunately were not able to win. This left them second in their section and they just missed out on the sectional playoffs. Grade 4 were in a similar position against St Ives and came second in their grade. A great result to have three teams playing, well done to all! The Championship Pairs is now underway. Good luck to all players and well done for entering. Pairs is great experience for all of us and is particularly good for learning more about the tactics of the game. The District Triples starts next Monday (8th) and Mosman has four teams entered. Play well girls, it would be lovely to see at least one team go through to the finals and on to State playoffs. I’m sure all of you agree that Mosman Bowling Club is one club,

appy Birthday Mosman Women's Club! The 2nd May is the 43rd birthday of the Women’s Club and it was celebrated in grand style at the Mosman Hotel (The Duck) by 34 of our members. The hotel gave us the top floor and even put up balloons in club colours of blue and yellow. It was fantastic to see Gerry Lockyer, with her arm no longer in a splint, and Cynthia Brew along with a great cross section of our players. One male member had a lucky escape. I was walking to the Mosman Hotel when I ran into Brin Kerwood. He too, ‘was heading to the pub’ but fortunately for him he was going to The Oaks and so did not get mixed up in the birthday celebrations. On more serious matters 72 people attended the Anzac Day Ceremony and bowls on 25th April, 62 of those played bowls. Thanks go to Jim Kemp for reciting The Ode, Ann Barron for The Lord’s Prayer, Richard Balnaves for flag duty, John Dale for organising the bowls and the Social Committee and Fran and Jennifer for the wonderful lunch. At this stage we have a Women's President and Committee which looks after the women's bowls side of things as well as a Board that looks after the running of the club as a whole. We are currently considering whether we really need a Women’s Committee or whether everything can be run by the Board. Obviously, we will still need Match and Selection Committees and a District representative but most other issues such as social activities, membership, welfare and publicity are now really the responsibility of the Board. This

would not preclude us from

women's only competitions or carnivals, just as the men do or even from celebrating our Club birthday.

There will be more information about this as we look at the constitutions and also the requirements of Bowls NSW. In the meantime, if you have an opinion or questions about this issue I would be very happy to hear from you. You can email, phone or grab me in person.

The Great Public Schools Old Boys Bowling Association (GPS) has moved

its annual Competition from its home for many years, the Warringah

Bowling Club, to Belmont Rd.

Played on the third Sunday of each month from May through November,

the competing schools are Grammar, High, Kings, Newington, Riverview,

Scots, St. Josephs and Shore who each field 2

triples teams.

The GPS Competition has been contested every

year since 1954 making it one of the oldest of

all Sydney bowls comps. The current champion

is The Kings School which includes our own

John Rock and Peter McAdam. Other MBC

members involved include Richard Balnaves, Ian Fielden and Steve

Parker.

The First Round will be played on Sunday 21st May.

At the April Board MeetingAt the April Board Meeting

Mosman BC has now joined the Mosman Chamber of Commerce, providing a valuable link to the local business community. Quotations were reviewed for the painting of the kitchen area, and the successful tenderer was approved. Work should take place in May. The purchase of a new gas fan-forced, 8 burner oven was approved. Installation will be in July. The old Triumph oven will be returned to Mosman Council. Installation of the new gas water-heater to feed the unisex toilet and ladies powder room will be in late-

April. Quotes are being sought for re-roping the main flagpole. This is a major job requiring the erection of scaffolding. Work should be completed in May. Quotes are also being sought for a concrete path across the lawn from the Gouldsbury St entrance. It is likely work will take place in June. There was discussion on our participation in the 2017 Mosman Festival which will feature our Business Challenge which was rained out in March. An Open Day is also being considered by our Membership Committee.

Accommodation arrangements are

currently being made, and should be

finalised this month. It has been

strongly recommended that we base

ourselves in historic Fremantle which

offers a good variety of restaurants,

bars and museums, and has plentiful

transport to Perth city. It is intended to

charter a coach to take us to and from the Bowling Clubs.

flights as soon as possible.

2017 BOWLING TOUR—PERTH 2017 BOWLING TOUR—PERTH

As the 2017 Pennants season comes to its end it is worth reflecting on the importance of teamwork in our game. Playing team bowls is a relatively unique form of team sport. Most other team sports involve a direct interaction between players. Cricket is batsman versus bowler. The footballs require passing, tackling and formation. Bowls is a combination of team interaction and individual play. When you are on the mat getting ready to deliver your bowl you are on your own with only advice from the other end of the rink and your understanding of the situation in the head to guide you. So at that stage you need to understand exactly what you need to do, go through your routine, visualise your shot and concentrate to the extent that you block out any outside interference. As a bowls team it is most important to support each other. Bowls is ultimately a confidence game. If you think you can play a shot, for the most part it will happen. If you are surrounded by negatives this reduces your confidence and the inevitable lack of success happens. When you play Pennants you see

negativity happening all the time. In a recent game I played against an opposition third who constantly complained that his skip was playing the wrong shot and was calling him the wrong way. This meant I became more confident as the game progressed because I knew that the opposition’s teamwork was lacking. And as he became grumpier his game deteriorated. In another game we had a situation where a player was loudly complaining that his team was letting him down. That made his mates feel bad, lose their concentration and confidence, and the whole team’s performance suffered. You see skips when a teammate delivers a bad bowl expressing their frustration through body language or comment. That makes a player who is having a bad game get even worse. These situations require encouragement. Nobody plays a bad bowl on purpose. It is the next bowl that is important, not the last one. Another example of behaviour affecting teamwork is a player who is constantly chatting behind the mat rather than concentrating on the game. In a competitive match you need to watch not only your own bowls but also those of your

teammates and the opposition. If you are chatting constantly to others you are not only affecting your own ability to focus but you are distracting the rest of your team. How often have we seen seconds or thirds who have not been paying attention go to the mat with no idea of the state of the head they are about to bowl to. So the message is:

Enthusiastically commend good bowls from your own side. High fives work well!

Concentrate on the game. There is time to chat over a drink or lunch afterwards.
