Well done to Arwen Kleinsmith for an outstanding set of performances at the Swim Timaru Winter Meet achieving a number of national qualifying times! James Corry continues to go from strength to strength in winning two gold medals in the South Island Cycling Championships. Congratulations also go out to Josh Lovely, who finished second in the under 19 section of the Ashburton half Marathon. As some of you may know at the start of the last school holidays I raced at the South Island Secondary Schools road cycling championships, where I won both the U17 boys time trial and U17 boys road race. Since then I have been training and racing in preparation for the cycling New Zealand Schools

Southern Tour in Blenheim in a few weeks where I will race alongside fellow MVHS student Maxwell Sail. The southern tour also doubles as the cycling New Zealand schools national time trial and Hill climb championships. Maxwell and I are very excited to race at this event and do Mountie proud.James Corry

In January, Arwen sprained her right rotator cuff, and she has been working hard at overcoming this injury. A couple of weekends ago Arwen competed at the Swim Timaru Winter meet, and did extremely well. Arwen competed and won three gold medals, two bronze medals and her team won the freestyle 4 x 50m freestyle relay. Arwen achieved personal bests in 3 of her races, and got another national time, bringing her to 5 national qualifying times.Along with your parents, we here at Mountainview High School are very proud of your hard work and perseverance.

Josh Lovely recently participated in the Ashburton half marathon, where he claimed second in his class. Josh shaved nearly 10 minutes off his time. He came 65th out of about 2,500 runners and 2nd in his class (under 19’s). Chris Phillips

Mountainview Environmental groupThe Mountainview Environmental group has been established week 1 this term. We are a small group of concerned students focused on the environment and issues happening in the world. We meet weekly and have started tackling the issue of waste at school. In week 3 we conducted a waste audit with Briony from the Timaru District Council and found that 72% of our waste should have been composted and recycled. Currently it all goes to waste. We are now coming up ideas to better sort and manage our waste, and educate students. We have also planned a rubbish pick-up day for Conservation week. More details to come.

Prizewinning poet

Jan Hill commended the quality of writing of the poets who entered the South Canterbury Young Writers Poetry Competition. Nine prizes were awarded, and a further two entries were highly commended, at a presentation at The Running Duck on Sunday evening. Rosie Jo Barnes (15) of Mountainview High School was the overall winner as well as winning her section. She says she is quite shy about reading out her work and entered to please her family; however, “I am quite pleased to win.” According to her mother, Rosie has been “scribbling away on paper napkins and other scraps of paper, since she was little. Now she has a book to write in.” Overall winner and first in senior section (13-18 years), Rosie Jo Barnes for her poem “Escaping the Sun”. Hugh McCafferty - Geraldine News

“ESCAPING THE SUN”

We tiptoed through the night so as not to disturb the sun,

For whatever would it think of our two heartbeats on the run.

Only the sweet embrace of darkness can know our need to get away,

For it disappears in the daylight with the break of everyday.

And there is something in the stars that has us hold on to our trust,

As though for just those midnight hours, the whole world belongs to us. We kept our voice in whispers lest we

rouse it from its sleep, And we shared the kind of secrets that the daylight made us keep.

But too soon the moon is setting as the East gives birth to light,

Casting shadows on the friendship we’ve created with the night.

And then there are only fraying memories we can recall, to keep us

warm, And we’re forced to face the fact that

you can’t outrun the dawn.

UK Travel - with the CairdsWe recently went to England and were very excited to be seeing our English family again. We flew over and were met at the airport by our Grandparents, Aunt and Uncle. On our holiday we met up with lots of family, Mum’s friends and their children. We also went sightseeing in London and saw Buckingham Palace, The Tower of London, Covent Garden, The London Dungeons and the National Gallery with art works by Monet, Constable, Rembrandt and many others. Another fun thing that we did was travel to the Warner Bros Harry Potter studio tour, it was really good with lots of special effects. On our sister’s Birthday we went to Rye, an ancient 14th Century town, that had quaint shops and cobbled lanes. Our Grandparents had their 50th Wedding Anniversary party while we were there, a joyful experience with lots of older people and 7 cakes!! We visited Chislehurst Caves which is near my grandparents house, they are a man made

labyrinth of tunnels. The guides told the history of the Romans, Druids and Saxons digging them, also the smuggling and murder that took place... We also saw how they were used during the war as an air raid shelter and hospital. 15,000 people stayed in the caves each night so that they could be safe. On our last few days, we went to Wales which was 7 hours travel away. We climbed Mount Snowdon, it took 3 hours to climb up and is 1,085 meters above sea level, the highest point in the British Isles, aside of the Scottish Highlands. We spread our cousin’s ashes at the top of the mountain, she was surrounded by all her family, and her partner, Jordan’s family. We spread her ashes there because she worked at Snowdon, and truly loved Wales. At the end of our holiday we were sad, we said goodbye bringing lots of good memories back home. Kia ora Ana, Ben & Nicki, I just want to say a big thank you to you both and the students at Mountainview HS for your support at the Timaru mobile blood drive on Wed 19th June.Thank you to the 9 students who took the time to come and donate!!!All nine students were able to give blood on the day.So, we managed to collect 9 units from the Mountainview HS donors (1 donation = 1 unit). That’s up to 27 lives saved by the Mountainview High School …ONE donation can save the lives of up to 3 people.Thank you, Nicki, for organising this event. And thank you, Ana & Ben, for getting the students signed-up and prepared, and helping everything to run smoothly on the day. You may be interested to know, we ended up collecting 73 units altogether at the Timaru mobile blood drive. This is fantastic, as we were aiming to collect 65 units.Once again, thank you for your ongoing support of our vital service.Ngā mihi mahana,Atawhai

On the 19th of June, 8 Mountainview students travelled down to Sopheze On The Bay to donate our blood for the New Zealand Blood Service. After a quick consultation with a nurse and a few chocolate biscuits, we were called up one by one to face our fears and give our blood. All together Mountainview managed to collect over 4 litres of blood, which will be used to save up to 27 lives all over New Zealand. After about an hour, we were all done and free to go, but not before having a few more biscuits. We would like to thank the New Zealand Blood Service for allowing us to take part in saving so many lives all over our country. Ben Carpenter

DramaThe Caucasian Chalk Circle: Year 11, 12 and 13 Drama students have been studying Brecht and Political Theatre as part of their “Big Project,” for Semester 2 Drama. As part of this they are performing “The Caucasian Chalk Circle,” by Bertolt Brecht.

The story is a play within a play, set as entertainment during a land dispute and is narrated by three story tellers (Josh Dalloway, Rosie Barnes and Abby Eddington McGartland, Y11). The play within a play follows servant girl Grusha (Georgia Chapman, Y11) as she is swept up in the chaos as the city of Nuka is taken over and the Governor of the city killed. In the madness the Governor’s wife, Natella (Piper Garmonsway, Year 13) accidentally leaves her child - heir to their fortune - behind, in favour of her expensive dresses. Grusha and baby Michael encounter many dangers on their journey. The play asks us - “to whom does the child belong?” the woman who raised Michael? Or the woman who birthed him?

Last thing - while we have a great bunch of homestays, WE STILL NEED MORE FOR THESE SHORT TERM VISITS (3 - 6 WEEKS). If you can help, please send me an email to [email protected]. There is a bit of a process to go through but we are very interested in talking to people about it. Oh yes, you do get paid.

Until next time, regards to you all.

John Wilson International Director

In Term 3, we had 3 new groups of international students joining our Mountie family. We have a group of 3 Japanese students, a group of 22 Korean students led by Valentina and another group of 5 Korean students. We have visited a lot of places and created a lot of memorable memories that we will all cherish for a long time.

At the end of July, we went on a ski trip to Roundhill Ski Field where some of the students had their first skiing or snowboarding experience. The weather that day was perfect for skiing, with the sun shining brightly and a very blue sky. On the way to the ski field, I could feel a lot of excitement when they got off the bus, and by the time we got back on the bus, everyone was asleep on the way back home. This shows that they all had a great day at the ski field filled with laughter and a lot of selfies.

On the same week, the school also took us to Tekapo where our international students went ice skating, tubing and swimming in the hot pools. They had a lot of fun ice skating as it was the first time for many of them. A lot of them were amazed by the view of overlooking Lake Tekapo when they were in the hot pools. We also went to the church down by the lake and the students took a lot of pictures with the amazing scenery.

With so many memorable experiences, the Korean group led by Valentina is leaving after their 3 weeks in New Zealand. We hope that they had an amazing experience in Mountainview and we wish them a safe flight back to Korea.

History Level 1 and Level 2 class trip On Tuesday 13th August, the Level 1 and 2 History class attended an American Black Civil Rights seminar held at Christchurch Boys High School. We were very lucky to be able to hear the story of Elizabeth Eckford, in person. Elizabeth was a member of the Little Rock Nine, a group of nine black American students who enroled at an all-white high school, Central High School, in 1957. The violent reaction to their enrolment would lead to a national crisis. It is not often that our students can experience an eye witness to history in person. Her words of encouragement to be a voice for positive change was inspirational. Wendy Johnston - History

History - Trip to Christchurch

International StudentsHi! My name is Pearl Downie, and I’m an exchange student from Canada studying at Mountainview High School. Everyone has been nothing but kind and welcoming ever since I got here. The teachers are all helpful and the small class sizes make it easy for them to focus on each of us individually. All of the students are all so friendly and supportive. I’m so lucky that I got the best host family I could’ve asked for. I’ve already had so many opportunities to explore the South Island through school and my host family, all of which were great experiences. I love the freedom that schools in New Zealand give you to choose which classes you take. This gave me the chance to take several classes I had never tried before, such as Commerce, Geography and Food Technology. Wearing a uniform was new to me, but I actually am really enjoying it. It creates a sense of community within the school. I feel so lucky for having the opportunity to experience Mountainview High School and New Zealand as a whole. Pearl Downie - International Student

Clearly the weather hasn’t been a deterrent to this new Mum on the school farm. A nice, healthy lamb born in the midst of the storm last week. It’s an appropriate time to remind people to stay away from the paddock so there is no risk of mis-mothering or otherwise upsetting the ewes. Newborn lambs are pretty tough if they have a belly full of milk.

There is enough shelter in the paddock for them to get out of the wind (which is the real killer of new born lambs).

The mealworm farm is coming along nicely.

Study time in lead up to examsIt’s Never Too Late To Start ….

Study Skills Checklist

As I write this article there are only 10 school days until Tournament Week in Week 7 of this term. After Tournament Week there are only 22 school days left until Senior Prize Giving! If students are involved in tournament week activities, there are even fewer lessons than already mentioned.Students should have a regular homework pattern and a revision timetable to ensure that work studied earlier in the year is learned and remembered. It may be time to look at the number of hours that are being spent in paid employment. If possible, a reduction in hours until after the November exams, may allow time for that much needed study which will ensure the highest achievement possible.Good balance in study, sport, work and leisure is the key to a healthy and successful future. Parents may need to help their child(ren) to achieve this balance. If sound patterns have not already been established, it is never too late to start!

We all learn differently, and we each have our own style of studying. No two people are exactly the same when it comes to study preferences. To get the most out of your studying, it’s important to better understand what works for you, and what doesn’t. To get started we recommend the study skills checklist below. Once you’ve done this, read each statement and determine if it applies to you. If it does, then mark Y. If it doesn’t, mark N. The purpose of this checklist is to provide you a basic self assessment of your study habits and attitudes, so you can identify study skills areas where you might want focus on improving.

1. Y__ N__ I spend more time than necessary studying for what I am learning.2. Y__ N__ It’s common for me to spend hours cramming the night before an exam.3. Y__ N__ If I dedicate as much time as I want to my social life, I don’t have enough time left to focus on my

studies, or when I study as much as I need to, I don’t have time for my social life.4. Y__ N__ I often study with the TV, music or my phone turned on.5. Y__ N__ I struggle to study for long periods of time without becoming distracted or tired.6. Y__ N__ I usually doodle, daydream, or fall asleep when I go to class.7. Y__ N__ Often the notes I take during class notes are difficult for me to understand later when I try and

review them.8. Y__ N__ I often end up getting the wrong material into my class notes.9. Y__ N__ I don’t usually review my class notes from time to time throughout the semester in preparation for

exams.10. Y__ N__ When I get to the end of a chapter in a textbook, I struggle to remember what I’ve just finished

reading.11. Y__ N__ I struggle to identify what is important in the text.12. Y__ N__ I frequently can’t keep up with my reading assignments, and consequently have to cram the night

before a test.13. Y__ N__ For some reason I miss a lot of points on essay tests even when I feel well prepared and know the

material well.14. Y__ N__ I study a lot for each test, but when I get to the test my mind draws a blank.15. Y__ N__ I often study in a sort of disorganized, haphazard way only motivated by the threat of the next test.16. Y__ N__ I don’t usually change my reading speed in response to the difficulty level of what I’m reading, or my

familiarity with the content.17. Y__ N__ I often wish that I was able read faster.18. Y__ N__ When my teachers assign me papers and projects I often feel so overwhelmed that I really struggle

to get started.
