FROM Mr Paul Jeffreys, Principal... 2016 Enrolments To ensure a smooth transition from the Kinder to Prep year takes place in 2016 we have had meetings between the school and local Kindergarten. The Student Information Booklets for 2016 and enrolment forms will be forwarded to the Dunkeld Kindergarten for distribution to families in the near future. At this time of the year we begin planning for 2016 and our work is made much easier and the outcomes are much better if we have a very good idea of our student numbers. If your children will not be attending Dunkeld Consolidated School in 2016 please advise the school as soon as possible.
iPads 2016 As we approach the end of Term 3 it may be worth reminding families of current Year 2 students (Year 3, 2016) that they will require iPads next year. The school offers a lease/buy arrangement but also encourages BYOD (bring your own device) as an alternative. This means that the family purchases the iPad and children take their device to and from school each day. If families wish to head down the BYOD track, they might like to put plans in place. Those who decide to BYOD have the flexibility to choose any iPad device they wish. Families who enter into a lease/buy arrangement with the school are restricted to the device designated by the school. You are welcome to inquire further at the school office.
School Disco Last Friday the annual disco was held in the school hall. It was pleasing to see so many children attend from Kindergarten age to Year 6 students. Thank you to the parents who decorated the hall and to Mrs Anne Gilbert for the organisation of the event. My personal thanks go to Maddie Calvert and Stella Gordon for dancing with me. The highlight of the evening was the Limbo, with Jessica Field and Myles Haley showing outstanding flexibility. A total of $143.00 was raised for the Victorian Cancer Council. (More details will be included in the next school newsletter).
Space for Making We have just begun to use the shed at the end of the basketball court for ‘making.’ Children will be able during recess and lunch, to go to the shed to construct whatever they like out of cardboard and ‘Makedo’ construction materials. As we observe how this all works, we will establish rules, challenges and depending on popularity, designated days or weeks for groups or classes. We hope to develop in the children the thinking processes for designing, making, testing and modifying.
Bake the World a better Place Thank you to Mrs Clare Kennedy and the many good people who came to school last Thursday and combined with our students in making sausage rolls for ‘Bake the World a Better Place.’ Around 90 dozen sausage rolls passed through the ovens in the kitchen and the school corridors were filled with the aroma of… onions. Tears rolled down the cheeks of little eyes after periods spent in the ‘onion cutting’ detail. Well done to those who hung in there. The Sausage Roll Drive raised funds for the Australian Red Cross.
Book Week Well done to families and children on the efforts to dress up as a favourite book character last Friday. Some of the costumes were beautiful, some were scary, some were clever and some were funny. What fun we
had at the book parade and thank you for coming. Well done
to teachers again on conducting a successful series of activities surrounding Book Week. Thank you. (Photos will appear in the next school newsletter).

Mrs Karen Arnold from the Dunkeld Post Office visited our school on Friday 21 August to demonstrate weaving and the children participated in the weaving process. A sincere thank you to Karen for donating her time and resources to educate the children about weaving; they really enjoyed the process and outcome. Craft Club activities have ranged from card and jewellery making, pom poms and thereafter a pom pom tree, pet rocks and pet pine cone owls. We are also looking forward to knitting, making some pencil friends and garlands. Thank you for the generous donations from the community of wool, knitting needles etc to assist with providing valuable activities and resources for the school’s Craft Club. DRIVING INTEREST
IN THE COUNTRY DRIVE-IN MOVIE Planning for the upcoming Country Drive-in Movie on Friday 2 October is motoring ahead! The organising committee has been overwhelmed by the support offered by local advertisers and sponsors, silent auction donors, volunteers and partners such as the Parents and Friends Committee and the Grampians Cricket Club. Tickets are now available for purchase (through www.dunkeld.vic.edu.au) and the committee would like to encourage Dunkeld Consolidated School families to help drive interest. Here’s three easy ways you can help: 1. If you’re on Facebook, please ‘like’ and ‘share’ the Dunkeld Country Drive-In Spectacular Facebook page. 2. Purchase your tickets early online (or using the form in the newsletter), and encourage family and friends to consider coming along too. 3. Get in touch with the committee (on 0447 857 337) if you’d like to do more in the lead up to the event, or on the night, to help make this event a great success. This is a set to be a fantastic event to showcase our wonderful school and vibrant community this school holidays. Spread the word.
BIG BLOKES BREAKFAST on 1 September The P & F Association is looking forward to hosting all the students with their ‘Big Blokes’ on Tuesday 1 September commencing at 7.30am at the school. Fathers, grandfathers or other significant males are equally valued and invited to invest some time with children at our school on this morning. Your presence is supported by the teachers and it is loved by the children.
FATHERS’ DAY STALL ON FRIDAY 4 SEPTEMBER
On Friday 4 September the Social Services Fathers’ Day Stall will take place at 10.00am.
Here are some suggestions for the stall: small tools, nails, chocolates, lollies, plants, wallets, books, toiletries, socks, handkerchiefs, mugs, golf balls and tees. Things that your child might like to give to their father. Could you please wrap your gifts in clear or coloured cellophane, this makes it easier to see what the children are purchasing.
Children can bring the donations in and leave them in the canteen from now onwards.
Please remember that we count the total gifts donated and divide by the number of children. This is to see how many gifts each child may purchase on the day. The more gifts that are donated, the more gifts that can be purchased by each child. All money raised is donated to charities chosen by the senior students.
We will sell the gifts in price range from 50 cents to $3.00. A raffle is also held, at the cost of 50 cents per ticket, with the larger donated gifts making up the prize list. If you are
4
unsure of how much money to send with your child, $5.00 will generally buy two gifts and raffle tickets.
Could all students please bring a bag to place their purchases in on the day of the stall.
For this to run smoothly we need some help from parents! We’ll need about 4 – 6 parents to help on Friday morning at 9.00am to collect the donations as children arrive, price them, lay out and serve at the stall to make it all run smoothly. Please consider helping, it is really a rewarding experience, and good fun! We really appreciate the time, donations and effort that you provide. Please contact Naomie Phillips on 0429 998 504 or email: [email protected]

Dr Michael Shiell is currently based in Melbourne. He is an Australian artist and arts researcher specialising in the field of ephemeral environmental art. SUPERANNUATION THAT IS 5 STAR FOR QUALITY AND VALUE! When you think Superannuation you don’t usually think of your Bank. If it crosses your mind super is where you cup your hands and
say you have “one of those”, aka an industry super fund. To be honest though, most people don’t even think of it at all which is
worrying. Super is ‘something’ you have that your employer contributes your 9% into and you hope you have enough to retire to the
Gold Coast when you are actually able to touch it.
The reality is if you don’t think about it and plan for it this will never happen.
Having a conversation with us could be the first step in the right direction. Not only are we here to help you build your future wealth so
that the dreams of sunshine become a reality, we have the award winning products to back it up.

MySuper category by the Heron Partnership. Heron assess industry super funds, master trusts and multi-employer funds.
The Bendigo SmartStart Super® default investment option has also been awarded Morningstar’s top accolade of 5 stars for its
three year performance. The 3-year performance for the default investment for under 55’s is 17.81% p.a and the 1 year performance

DUNKELD MUSEUM UPDATE
Guest Speaker Meeting on Monday 7 September: Our next guest speaker
meeting will be held on Monday 7 September commencing at 8.00pm. The guest speaker will be well-known rural photographer, Mrs Tracey Kruger, from
Croxton East. Tracey’s real love is the farm, especially shearing. She grew up on a sheep farm at Nullawarre and then married a farmer and continued her involvement with the wool industry. Tracey drove over 25,000 kilometres during a 2½ year period visiting approximately 160 wool sheds to document shearing in the Western District. With her strong interest in Australian history, the end result was the publication of Tracey’s book, Shearing in Victoria’s Western District.
Entry is by gold coin donation and a light supper will follow
the guest speaker meeting. Everyone is most welcome to
attend.
125th
Anniversary Celebrations – Penshurst to Dunkeld, Hamilton and Koroit Railways: A large group of ‘railway
buffs’ from the Geelong and South Western Rail Heritage Society, led by Mr Michael Menzies, visited the Dunkeld Museum on Saturday 22 August to view our display of railway photos and maps as part of the 125
th Railways
Anniversary celebrations. Thank you to our members who assisted in many ways with this successful display.
Have you heard the exciting news? Dunkeld Consolidated School will again stage its Country Drive-in Movie, on Friday 2 October 2015. Building on the success from last year’s event, the new date will offer a great school holiday activity for local families and visitors and the opportunity to showcase the wonderful facilities available at our school. Gates will open at 5.30pm for two hours of fun, food and children’s activities, as well as happy hour and silent auction in partnership with the Dunkeld Cricket Club. DUNKELD RSL SUB-BRANCH RSL Membership: We invite ex-service men
and women to be members and renew their membership to ensure the future of the RSL locally. If you are a relative of ex-service men or women you can also join the RSL. By becoming a member of the RSL you will be helping the welfare of disabled war veterans and supporting your local RSL Sub-Branch. Application forms are available from the Secretary/Treasurer, Terrie Nicholson on 5573 3353.
VetRide: VetRide was established in
2011 under the auspices of the Victorian Branch of the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia and its objective is to provide support for all members and ex-members of the Australian
Defence Force (ADF), through cycling. Mr Peter Liefman, Group Chairman, Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia mentions: As many of our generations of veterans have now passed the age of sixty and are not working, the tendency has developed to be less active; and combined with weight gain due to any number of ill health and other more usual reasons, the need for exercise (and of course a better diet) has become an imperative. We have also identified a number of aims, beyond the obvious health and wellbeing benefits, not least being the opportunity provided for interaction between the veteran and non-veteran community and as part of the recognition of service, both past and present. Through our annual ride event we have been able to bring together current serving and ex-service men and women, a connection that has reciprocal benefits for all who participate and next year we hope to bring that concept onto the national stage. The event is planned for the one to two weeks ending with an official ceremony at the Australian War Memorial, on Sunday 20 March 2016. GARDEN NOTES
– SEPTEMBER
Spring is here, there is much work to do in the garden. Don’t be tempted to cut back frost damaged plants too soon as leaving damaged shoots on your plant will protect new growth. Don’t remove affected parts until frost danger is over, say early November.
Main vegetable plantings are early tomato, capsicum, zucchini, pumpkin and cucumber ( these will all require protection from the frost) also late peas, potato, carrot, parsnip, lettuce, beetroot, silver beet, spinach, early beans, radish, etc.
Late spring and summer flowering annuals for September planting include petunia, marigold, pansy, impatiens, aster and many others. Christmas flowering gladioli should be planted mid September.
People have asked when to lift bulbs such as daffodils, tulips etc. The golden rule is to wait at least 4 weeks after flowers fade in order to build up the bulb for next seasons flowering.
September is a good time to lightly trim any spring flowering trees after blooming, this can help to maintain a good size and shape without loss of flowers as would occur with winter pruning. With the rise in soil and air temperatures, there is a noticeable increase in growth this means that you should think about feeding your plants. There are two main groups
of fertilizers. Firstly, natural or organic fertilizers such as animal manure, compost, fish or meat meal, blood and bone etc. The second group consists of chemical or manufactured products, although this group can also contain natural or rock minerals. Both groups contain a very wide range of material, preparations and mixtures in different forms: powders; granules; liquids; pellets etc. There are advantages and disadvantages in using both groups of materials.
I recommend that people use organic or natural materials as much as possible as these feed your soil as well as your plants although their nutrient content can vary. Sometimes, however, chemical fertilizers are required for a quick response or to treat a specific deficiency. Always follow directions on packages carefully as failure to do so can result in burning of foliage or roots.

DRAFT RATE CAPPING FRAMEWORK RELEASED
A draft State Government report on the rate capping and variation framework set to be introduced in 2016/17 was noted by Council at last Wednesday’s August meeting. The report ‘A blueprint for Change’ was developed by the Essential Services Commission (ESC) on the back of the last years’ election commitment to introduce rate capping for local governments. The framework is designed to meet the Government’s commitment to cap annual council rate increases as well as to develop a workable process to assess any proposals by Councils to increase rates above the cap. The report discusses how the cap should be calculated, what rates it should be applied to, what circumstances variations may be considered and who will approve them, among many other issues. The full report is available at www.esc.vic.gov.au The Commission will now conduct an extensive round of consultations which will include councillors, council staff, ratepayers, public information sessions in several regional centres and through convening deliberative discussions with groups of randomly selected ratepayers and community members. Details for these sessions are available on the ESC website. Southern Grampians Shire Mayor Cr Peter Dark says it’s important that people make themselves aware of the information in this report and how the proposed framework will impact service delivery in the Shire. “Rate capping will mean significant change to the way we develop our budgets and determine our service levels. We will be making another submission on this report on behalf of Council but I also encourage ratepayers to make their own submissions on this very important issue” Mayor Dark said. Submissions can be made to the ESC directly via email [email protected] by the closing date of 28 August. Alternatively submissions could be made to the Council (addressed to the CEO, Locked Bag 685, Hamilton Vic 3300) by 24 August so that they may be considered by Council in its submission. The final decision regarding the State Government’s adopted approach to rate capping will be communicated widely through the State Government’s channels. Local information will be made available to inform the community of the implications from Southern Grampians Shire Council’s perspective.

FROM THE LIONS DEN Locally things have been quiet work wise, but we have still been supporting various Lions projects nationally and internationally. Some of the projects are very big but some are quite small. One in particular that has been a great success is the Lions supported fundraising project for a $6.5 million (Aust) training and medical ship for Papua New Guinea. Last year the project received a huge boost when $2.8 million was raised at a fundraising event in Port Moresby. The ship will operate out of Townsville and be operated by Youth with a Mission (YWAM). Australian Lions contribute via fundraising by Queensland members.
Such is life
Recently Liz and I became grandparents again when our daughter Gina gave birth to a baby girl (Allie Grace). When I was holding the little one I couldn’t help but think of the importance of life and some of the things that have been said throughout history.
Plato (c.427-347 BC) Greek philosopher was holding his first born son and said, “You are the only person I want to exceed me in everything.”
St Alphonsus Liguori (1696-1787) Doctor of the Church who had such a love for the Virgin Mary and the baby Jesus that he would never pass by a Mother with a baby without stopping to bless them and ask for their prayers.
Peter Hinchey (1900-1975) General carrier and wood merchant of Ararat. When I took my first born, Peter, to show him to my father (there were then three generations of Peter Hinchey) Dad held his grandson and said, “When you come into this world you are wet and hungry and the first person that sees you gives you a hit on the back, and for some children life does not get any better.”
Melbourne Doctor and abortionist who specialises in late term abortions (up til the moment of birth) present day-is quoted as saying, “It is not a baby until the mother tells me it is.”
Peter Hinchey (1948- ) I was holding Allie Grace and said to her parents Gina and Aaron, “Give her a good start in life by having her taught the Chinese language it will be very useful - but by that time the way we are selling off our country it will probably be mandatory to learn it.”
The nicest thing about the future is that it always starts tomorrow. Peter Hinchey

For each serving Australian who risks everything - a family does the same. Australians will have the chance to show their support for these very special families by buying a badge during Legacy Week, 30 August to 5 September 2015. As one of Australia’s most iconic charities, Legacy grew out of the ashes of the Great War and still supports around 90,000 families of Defence personnel who have given their lives or their health for their country. Australia has lost just over 100,000 service men and women in all conflicts with many, many more badly injured, both mentally and physically. In WWI alone around 60,000 service men and women were killed with another 60,000 losing their lives in the following 10 years as a result of their service. For further information visit www.legacy.com.au or call 1800 534 229.
