Abode of Peace The Lion CityThe treasures of the exhibition are 33 items of the Brunei Royal Regalia which are on display for the first time in Asia. These items were used during the 1968 Coronation Ceremony and 1992 Silver Jubilee Ceremony of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, who celebrates 50 years of reign this year. Accompanying these Bruneian artefacts are close to 600 stamps and philatelic materials from the Singapore Philatelic Museum Permanent Collection and Postal Services Department, Brunei Darussalam. Currency and coins used by both countries from the Straits Settlements years until current day are on display. There are also artefacts dating from 960 AD to 1970s including early forms of currency, blue porcelain ware from a shipwreck in Brunei, textiles, and 19th century brass containers.

A second exhibition focusing on Singapore’s multicultural society and efforts at urban greening will be on show in Brunei from November 2017 to April 2018.

Abode of Peace & The Lion City: A Brunei – Singapore Exhibition was officially launched by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, at Singapore Philatelic Museum (SPM) on 5 July 2017. Also in attendance were Her Majesty Raja Isteri, His Royal Highness Prince Abdul Malik and Her Royal Highness Pengiran Raabi’atul Adawiyyah, and Her Royal Highness Princess Masna and His Royal Highness Pengiran Abdul Aziz.

The exhibition celebrates the deep-rooted friendship, and the 50th anniversary of the unique Currency Interchangeability Agreement between the two countries. The exhibition is curated by SPM and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Brunei Darussalam.

Spanning three galleries, the exhibition uses stamps, artefacts, 360o virtual reality displays and interactive stations to highlight colourful and informative facets of the Brunei Sultanate, Brunei’s history, its ethnic communities, and world-renowned flora and fauna.

Over the weekend, visitors who came to SPM for the Brunei Cultural Showcase! tasted the wonderful cuisine of Brunei. Chefs were on hand to prepare ambuyat (the national dish of Brunei), dipping sauces, fish and meat dishes, as well as desserts!

A special craft booth was set up for visitors to fold the dastar. Families could dress up in traditional clothesand get their picture taken at the dress-up booth.

Musicians and performers from Senandung Budaya, MCYS Brunei Darussalam, put up dance and music performances. They presented dances from the different ethnic groups and taught visitors simple joget (dance) steps!

As part of the opening celebrations of Abode of Peace & The Lion City Exhibition, Singapore Philatelic Museum (SPM) and Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS), Brunei Darussalam organised fun cultural activities for school children and visitors from 6 - 9 July 2017.

During the Colourful World of Stamps education programme, school children were treated to a delightful Bruneian experience of dance and crafts. They learnt how the dastar (traditional male headdress) is folded. The girls got a chance to try on the kain jongsarat (handwoven golden thread cloth) which like the dastar, is worn during special events and festivals. At the close of the programme, they learnt about traditional musical instruments, watched a performance and danced along with the performers!

A huge ‘Thank You’ to MCYS Brunei Darussalam and SPM for a successful event!

Stamps are miniature pieces of art and living history which record a country’s rich and diverse culture, achievements and way of life! Singapore Philatelic Museum organised the National Stamp Collecting Competition (NSCC) and Draw My Stamp Story Art Competition to get students to discover that stamps are a window to the world to explore different topics, to appreciate the beauty of the designs and to have a better understanding of them.

Close to 350 students took part in NSCC and over 1,000 students participated in Draw My Stamp Story Art Competition. Top entries were displayed at The Plaza, National Library from 16 - 18 August 2017. Singapore Philatelic Museum (SPM) is very proud and pleased to jointly present with the Association of Singapore Philatelists, the 150th Anniversary of First Postage Stamp Issued in Singapore Exhibition. The exhibition commemorates a milestone in philately – the issuance of Straits Settlements stamps in September 1867. The launch of the commemorative stamps on 1 September 2017 will mark the start of the exhibition. Visitors to the exhibition will have a deeper understanding and insight into Singapore’s rich postal history.

The postage stamp was introduced in Singapore, then part of the Straits Settlements, in 1854. They were Indian stamps issued by the British East India Company, and were charged in Indian currency of annas and pies.

On 1 April 1867, the Straits Settlements was officially transferred to the Colonial Office in London and became a crown colony. On 1 September 1867, Singapore took charge of its own postal matters and issued a set of stamps to mark the change in governance. This was significant as Singapore became the postal and communications hub for Southeast Asia and the rest of the world.

The exhibition showcases valuable and rare collections of the Straits Settlements period from private collectors and SPM. The exhibits will change four times over four months. Collectors include Mr Koh Seow Chuan, Mr Tan Ah Ee, Mr Vincent Ong, Dr Chua Eu Tiong, Mr Wong Han Min, Mr Henry Ong, Mr Richard Tan, Dr Prakob Chirakiti and Mr Charnchai Karnasuta.
